Summary

Comprehensive guide on basic stoic history and principles, mainly driven by Epictetus’ discourses, the author boils down the main characteristics of the philosophy。 If you’ve read anything by the Contemporary Stoics (Seneca, Marcus A, Epictetus) the content won’t be much of a surprise but more of a friendly reminder of all of what Stoicisim encompasses

This book might be good for someone who wants a simplified introduction to the subject。I personally found it, for the most part, closer to a good snack rather than a fulfilling meal。 (and, to be fair, I'm not sure if that's due to the writing itself or my background knowledge) This book might be good for someone who wants a simplified introduction to the subject。I personally found it, for the most part, closer to a good snack rather than a fulfilling meal。 (and, to be fair, I'm not sure if that's due to the writing itself or my background knowledge) 。。。more

I liked it。I would reread it because I agree with the stoic philosophy and I find it mentally healthy to think and reflect about myself while I read stoic philosophy。Maybe I'll add more later。 It's worth reading as an introduction or refresher。 I recently studied CBT as a form of personal self help, so this was great reinforcement of those previous ideas。 I liked it。I would reread it because I agree with the stoic philosophy and I find it mentally healthy to think and reflect about myself while I read stoic philosophy。Maybe I'll add more later。 It's worth reading as an introduction or refresher。 I recently studied CBT as a form of personal self help, so this was great reinforcement of those previous ideas。 。。。more

A great start to learn stoicism with many applications in everyday lives。 Would give 5 stars if it had discussed more about stoicism four virtues (wisdom, temperance, justice, courage)

Fantastic book about Stoicism。 Read and learn to be a Stoic。 It covers every aspect of life。 Literally based on Discourses of Epictetus by Epictetus。 Beautifully quoted by discourses, anyone can read, understand, apply, and can be a stoic。

Massimo Pigliucci is a very knowledgable and careful writer。 This book definitely cleared up my understanding of the original stoic writings。 Massimo is careful to explain what the ancients meant by words whose concept had changed over the centuries (millennia even)。 He uses real examples of how the ideas of stoicism can be used in real life which brings the philosophy from theoretical to practical。My biggest complaint about this book is that the author didn't always address the criticisms of th Massimo Pigliucci is a very knowledgable and careful writer。 This book definitely cleared up my understanding of the original stoic writings。 Massimo is careful to explain what the ancients meant by words whose concept had changed over the centuries (millennia even)。 He uses real examples of how the ideas of stoicism can be used in real life which brings the philosophy from theoretical to practical。My biggest complaint about this book is that the author didn't always address the criticisms of the philosophy。 Also, a lot of the examples were of people who aren't exactly lower class。 It's been said that stoicism is the philosophy of the 1% and when most of your examples involve academics and flying all over the globe and dining in expensive restaurants, I can definitely see why people might think that。 I don't know if it never occurred to the author by how does someone in an abusive relationship ship use stoicism to better themselves? How does someone well below the poverty line who is struggling to feed their family? Basically, how can stoicism actually help someone to better their lives aside from just understanding what is and isn't within their control? 。。。more

A great overview of Stoicism for anyone who wants a book that can start them on their journey。His writing style can be hard to read and is a little long winded at times but apart from that, I had found it helpful to read about his own stoic related stories!

I really enjoyed the concept when I first started reading this book。 There are a lot of good topics to meditate on。 That was a book went further along I got a little bit less relatable。 I would’ve liked him more philosophical ending and less on every day problems。

Mr Pigliucci has an extended conversation with the Stoic philosopher Epictetus in this engaging volume that describes why Pigliucci adopted stoicism as his personal philosophy。 Not only does he review the thought of Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Cicero and other Ancients as well as Epictetus but he also includes modern figures like James Stockdale who used stoicism to endure the horrors of a Vietnamese prison camp。 Pigliucci discusses many current problems like loneliness and how modern science often Mr Pigliucci has an extended conversation with the Stoic philosopher Epictetus in this engaging volume that describes why Pigliucci adopted stoicism as his personal philosophy。 Not only does he review the thought of Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Cicero and other Ancients as well as Epictetus but he also includes modern figures like James Stockdale who used stoicism to endure the horrors of a Vietnamese prison camp。 Pigliucci discusses many current problems like loneliness and how modern science often backs up the insights of the Ancients。 This book is a very good introduction to an important school of philosophy still relevant to today's human condition。 。。。more

。Massimo PigliucciHow To Be A StoicTranslated By #Maher_Razouk 。。。more

audio book: Although there were some very useful points made in the book and it is an interesting introduction to Stoicism, the book is mired in way too much background info and not enough practical advice。 The last chapter is the most useful。 I felt I wanted more about how to use the philosophy for modern life and less info about the ancient part of the philosophy。

I thought this was a pretty good book on Stoicism。 I’ve read several now, and I think I would have enjoyed it much more were it the first I had read。 I read Bill Irving’s book first, which is frequently referred to in this book。 I think Irving’s book is better written than this one as well。 That said, I think this book’s section on stoic exercises was excellent, and that was something I’d wished Irving had done better。 If this is your first stoicism book, it’s a great one for you。 If you’ve read I thought this was a pretty good book on Stoicism。 I’ve read several now, and I think I would have enjoyed it much more were it the first I had read。 I read Bill Irving’s book first, which is frequently referred to in this book。 I think Irving’s book is better written than this one as well。 That said, I think this book’s section on stoic exercises was excellent, and that was something I’d wished Irving had done better。 If this is your first stoicism book, it’s a great one for you。 If you’ve read a few already, there’s still something here for you, but it’s mostly at the end。 。。。more
