Summary

The Red Book, published to wide acclaim in 2009, contains the nucleus of C。 G。 Jung’s later works。 It was here that he developed his principal theories of the archetypes, the collective unconscious, and the process of individuation that would transform psychotherapy from treatment of the sick into a means for the higher development of the personality。 As Sara Corbett wrote in the New York Times, The creation of one of modern history’s true visionaries, The Red Book is a singular work, outside of categorization。 As an inquiry into what it means to be human, it transcends the history of psychoanalysis and underscores Jung’s place among revolutionary thinkers like Marx, Orwell and, of course, Freud。 The Red Book: A Reader’s Edition features Sonu Shamdasani’s introductory essay and the full translation of Jung’s vital work in one volume。

I passed this book on without finishing it。 The concept of having the opportunity to peek into someone's unconscious through dreams, fantasies, visions and thought processes is an interesting one。 The introductory part of the book, not written by Jung, provided good context and a look into how Jung's academic life in Zurich looked like。 It surely was a mesmerising time。 However, after hyping the book in the introduction, the text itself by Jung was a miss for me。 As before with Jung, I find his I passed this book on without finishing it。 The concept of having the opportunity to peek into someone's unconscious through dreams, fantasies, visions and thought processes is an interesting one。 The introductory part of the book, not written by Jung, provided good context and a look into how Jung's academic life in Zurich looked like。 It surely was a mesmerising time。 However, after hyping the book in the introduction, the text itself by Jung was a miss for me。 As before with Jung, I find his writing difficult to follow。 This text felt like an assembly of random paragraphs where meaning was floating very loosely。 I didn't find the energy and focus needed to get something from this worth my time。 Perhaps I'll return as a more mature reader。 I hope to try a more accessible work by Jung on my next journey to his world。 。。。more

This was bizarre, but taken in the context of everything else I should've seen it coming。 Wild wild shtuff in here。 It's maybe worth reading just to get a, like, lifelong dream journal of a person。 I'd recommend to anyone with a '60s-esque interest in "spirituality" and psychologist/sociologist types, but pretty much it's only Jung fans who will be into this。 I listened to the audiobook, so I'm sure it's much better with the enormous illustrations in the print version (which I hear is amazing)。 This was bizarre, but taken in the context of everything else I should've seen it coming。 Wild wild shtuff in here。 It's maybe worth reading just to get a, like, lifelong dream journal of a person。 I'd recommend to anyone with a '60s-esque interest in "spirituality" and psychologist/sociologist types, but pretty much it's only Jung fans who will be into this。 I listened to the audiobook, so I'm sure it's much better with the enormous illustrations in the print version (which I hear is amazing)。 Sidenote, as a work of scholarship, it's quality。 。。。more

"On this way, no one walks behind me, and I cross no one's path。 I am alone, but I fill my solitariness with my life。 I am man enough, I am noise, conversation, comfort, and help enough unto myself。 And so I wander to the far East。 Not that I know anything about what my distant goal might be。 I see the blue horizons before me: they suffice as a goal。 I hurry toward the East and my rising - I will my rising。"Life changing。 The realest book I've ever read。 It's a collection of journal entries by C "On this way, no one walks behind me, and I cross no one's path。 I am alone, but I fill my solitariness with my life。 I am man enough, I am noise, conversation, comfort, and help enough unto myself。 And so I wander to the far East。 Not that I know anything about what my distant goal might be。 I see the blue horizons before me: they suffice as a goal。 I hurry toward the East and my rising - I will my rising。"Life changing。 The realest book I've ever read。 It's a collection of journal entries by Carl Jung over the course of 16 years and throughout the first World War。 It basically chronicles his journey towards self-realization and his trying to understand himself and his place in the world through inner dialogues and imaginative scenarios。 His vast knowledge of world mythology and his constant references to ancient legends and myths add a thick layer of meaning to the already enchanting dialogues。 What manages to capture me the most however, is the fact that this book was never fundamentally meant to be read by others。 Jung was apparently very apprehensive about letting people read his personal journals when he was still alive, and it wasn't until almost 50 years after his death that this book was finally released to the public。 It shows that he wrote it mainly for himself。 It's brutally honest, deeply personal, vastly more poetic and imaginative than his scholarly work and without a single shred of pretense in any of the words。 This book at its' core is nothing more than an extraordinarily knowledgeable man trying to come to terms with the fundamental questions of his own life and existence, but the way he manages to translate those matters into fantastic stories and poetry is truly inspiring and motivating。 In a world of philosophers trying to define the world around them, it is very refreshing to read about the findings of a man who tried to define himself instead。 。。。more

This is more directed at the book as it exists now, than as it existed at the time of writing。I hope Jung helped himself by writing this, but I doubt it。 This type of existentialist 'Depth Investigation' is still kicking around today, usually in the form of academics and nu-self-help people who need a little outside wackiness but don't allow themselves to listen to rap music (except perhaps as a quaint little 'foray' mentioned in their weekly bulleted mailing list)。 There's a reason it's (view s This is more directed at the book as it exists now, than as it existed at the time of writing。I hope Jung helped himself by writing this, but I doubt it。 This type of existentialist 'Depth Investigation' is still kicking around today, usually in the form of academics and nu-self-help people who need a little outside wackiness but don't allow themselves to listen to rap music (except perhaps as a quaint little 'foray' mentioned in their weekly bulleted mailing list)。 There's a reason it's (view spoiler)[therapy women (hide spoiler)] and newly-converted extremely online Christians who tend to enjoy this stuff, despite its vague blasphemy—it's all low-effort poetic physics。This genre of existentialist investigation seems to consider itself more important the further it gets from any resonant aesthetics or utility。 It considers itself more honest and 'deeper in the soul' the further it gets from anything resembling signal。 It strikes as desperate pattern-finding for burnt-out people who take a precise stack of vitamins every day and do keto in the flotation tank。 You have to be deeply burnt-out and depressive to enjoy, let alone become religiously-obsessed, with the 'hidden meanings' of such whimsical images。 Mere poetry is sufficient for these people, and they tend to defend this view with the word 'profound'。Is this stuff beautiful to the modern eye? One of the most difficult books I have read, in every sense of the phrase。Jung writes in a way that makes words crack, bend, and sometimes break under the strain of thought (to borrow some lines from Eliot)。 The book itself took 16 years to write。 It took me perhaps half as many months to read, even though there was scarcely a day when I did not read some of it。 This book is not of the sort to inspire a way of life: Far from it, I think it would be very unwise to build one's life around it。 Yet One of the most difficult books I have read, in every sense of the phrase。Jung writes in a way that makes words crack, bend, and sometimes break under the strain of thought (to borrow some lines from Eliot)。 The book itself took 16 years to write。 It took me perhaps half as many months to read, even though there was scarcely a day when I did not read some of it。 This book is not of the sort to inspire a way of life: Far from it, I think it would be very unwise to build one's life around it。 Yet it is a very *arresting* work of art。 It taps into the deep-rooted affinity human beings have for the spiritual--and sometimes teaches lessons through the horror and revulsion that only the spiritual dimension can inspire。 。。。more
