Summary

Caldecott Honor and Geisel Honor Book

What are you waiting for? An owl, a puppy, a bear, a rabbit, and a pig—all toys arranged on a child’s windowsill—wait for marvelous things to happen in this irresistible picture book by the New York Times–bestselling and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes。

Five friends sit happily on a windowsill, waiting for something amazing to happen。 The owl is waiting for the moon。 The pig is waiting for the rain。 The bear is waiting for the wind。 The puppy is waiting for the snow。 And the rabbit is just looking out the window because he likes to wait! What will happen? Will patience win in the end? Or someday will the friends stop waiting and do something unexpected?

Waiting is a big part of childhood—waiting in line, waiting to grow up, waiting for something special to happen—but in this book, a child sets the stage and pulls the strings。 Timeless, beautiful, and deeply heartfelt, this picture book about imaginative play, the seasons, friendship, and surprises marks a new pinnacle in Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes’s extraordinary career。

“The short sentences of the text flow with the precision one would expect from a master picture-book creator like Henkes。 Little ones, to whom each experience is new, will know what it’s like to dream and wait。”—ALA Booklist

A softly hued illustrated little story about a group who are waiting and the different things being waited for。 Simple and sweet。

This book shows how kids pass their days waiting for magic to happen。 It shows how they feel about the things they are close with and the fun they can create。

Such a cute book! It kept my attention just as much as my kids。 The illustrations are lovely and petite。

I just read this book for another class and thought it was cute。 It’s about these 5 friends that are sitting in the windowsill waiting。 Waiting for something special to happen, I guess。 I gave it 3 stars because the story was cute but it was kind of boring。 There wasn’t much to it。 It’s an interesting perspective of looking through a window but there could have been more to the story, in my opinion。 I would still recommend reading it to see what you think though。

It has been some time since I’ve read Henkes, and I don’t think I’ve ever read this one, but it made me really fall in love with his work all over again。 This is an adorably written and illustrated story of toy animals at the window。 It’s simple but very cute。

This soft and sweet book about waiting is just what you would expect from this award winning author and illustrator。 The illustrations are completed using gentle colors that do not overwhelm or overstimulate and the words are just the same。 The five friends sit on their window ledge, quietly waiting for specific things or, as in the case of the rabbit with stars, just waiting because looking out the window is enjoyable。This book could be used in the classroom during a whole group discussion abou This soft and sweet book about waiting is just what you would expect from this award winning author and illustrator。 The illustrations are completed using gentle colors that do not overwhelm or overstimulate and the words are just the same。 The five friends sit on their window ledge, quietly waiting for specific things or, as in the case of the rabbit with stars, just waiting because looking out the window is enjoyable。This book could be used in the classroom during a whole group discussion about patience and what it looks like to wait patiently。 The students could connect to prior knowledge by sharing examples of times that they had to wait and how that made them feel。 The students could take time to look out a window and think about what they might be waiting for, they could then take a moment each day to look out the window and see if what they were waiting for had arrived。 Their observations could be turned into a graph or a notebook of words or drawings noting what was seen。 Teachers could also use this book as a mentor text for a writing lesson about what toys do when their children are at school。 。。。more

This is a good picture book for children。 It is all about waiting, the five characters in the book were all waiting for something。 I think this book is a good read for children, it shows how everybody always must wait for something。 And that waiting is normal for everyone。 This is a good bed time or soothing story for children。

This book had wonderfull illustrations that keeps the child engaged and wondering。 There were parts of the text that were not completed for the child to understand its purpose。

Isabella Parkhurst

Absolutely love the illustrations in this story! I chose this book for this weeks discussion because I love Kevin Henkes and was impressed, but not surprised, with the awards it has won。 The illustrations absolutely give this story a whole new meaning。 Would love to read this with younger elementary students during a read aloud。 This book is simple, easy to read, and thoroughly enjoyable。 Kevin Henkes has done it again。

Kiyoko

beautiful illustrations and lots to discuss about them。 Quiet stories offer that opportunity。

Emma Linder

I like how the book focused on friendship and how to interact when making new friends。

Ruth

Very sweet with lovely, comforting artwork。

Melissa the Librarian
