Summary

Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?

It’s the Spring Tournament quarterfinals, and the two smallest hitters—Hinata and Hoshiumi—are already making the sparks fly! Kamomedai’s consistent and systematic blocking strategies have Hinata stymied, while Tsukishima’s cold and logical decision-making has Hoshiumi stuffed! It isn’t long before the game turns into a vicious back-and-forth battle between offense and defense!

*3。8。 Not a bad volume。 I think because Haikyuu focuses on volleyball which is a very dynamic sport, most times when I'm reading the manga unless there are some really cool character moments or very high stakes it ends up being an average 3。5/3 star read。 Which is nothing against the manga it's just when all I'm seeing is the match but I'm not super invested it's hard for me to give it a four-star。 This volume did come close, however。 I really did enjoy the volume even though I was lost for a bi *3。8。 Not a bad volume。 I think because Haikyuu focuses on volleyball which is a very dynamic sport, most times when I'm reading the manga unless there are some really cool character moments or very high stakes it ends up being an average 3。5/3 star read。 Which is nothing against the manga it's just when all I'm seeing is the match but I'm not super invested it's hard for me to give it a four-star。 This volume did come close, however。 I really did enjoy the volume even though I was lost for a bit。 I honestly cant wait to see how this match goes so I can finally finish this series。 。。。more

The different approaches Hinata, Kamomedai's short player, and the former Little Giant all take to being "short" are fascinating and really speak to their attitudes towards the game and competition in general。 Though of course the real highlight of this volume is Tsukki vehemently denying that he's anything like Hinata。 The different approaches Hinata, Kamomedai's short player, and the former Little Giant all take to being "short" are fascinating and really speak to their attitudes towards the game and competition in general。 Though of course the real highlight of this volume is Tsukki vehemently denying that he's anything like Hinata。 。。。more

Knowing that the series is so close to the end, this match feels like a real finale。 At the beginning of the series, Karasuno's number one enemy was the iron wall of Date Tech。 Big, tall blockers, that eliminated them in the previous year's competition。 They boasted tall players with impressive defensive capabilities that disheartened their ace and libero so much they began fighting and quit the team。 For the returning members of Karasuno, particularly for the third years, they were a threat tha Knowing that the series is so close to the end, this match feels like a real finale。 At the beginning of the series, Karasuno's number one enemy was the iron wall of Date Tech。 Big, tall blockers, that eliminated them in the previous year's competition。 They boasted tall players with impressive defensive capabilities that disheartened their ace and libero so much they began fighting and quit the team。 For the returning members of Karasuno, particularly for the third years, they were a threat that literally and figuratively loomed over them。 They were their first major match, the first tenuous outcome, the first true test。 And now, at the tail end, is Kamomedai。 Another team with a massive wall of players, specializing in defense, constantly stuffing Karasuno's offensive attempts。 This game is much better than the Date Tech game, with Kamomedai's vast range of specialized defensive plays and Karasuno's various learned offensive tools, but it all comes back to the singular need to score while being suffocated by defensive pressure。Haikyu!! is, and has always been, about the love of volleyball。 The first chapter has Hinata wanting to get better not just to win, but to keep playing。 If you lose, you're out of the tournament and can't play anymore。 Yes everyone has a personal drive to compete and the amibition to win but the core identity is the desire to play more volleyball。 And what's so frustrating about Kamomedai is how restrictive their defense is。 When they stand up, when the block every attack, you feel like you're not even playing volleyball。 You can't move, you can't do anything, you're not having fun。 Karasuno starts to feel like that, with their opponents being depicted as a dense forest of growing trees that the players are lost in。 There's no light, no hope of getting out, they're lost and trapped。 It's oppressive and depressing, a big ultimate challenge of how they'll find themselves again。On top of that, Hoshiumi is just。。。 better Hinata。 Really。 Slightly taller, better at serving, better defense, a talented eye for offense, he's got it all。 Of course there's something about Hinata that makes him unique and gives him a fighting chance but to see a member of the opposing team have his same exact disadvantage, while also having more skill and more experience overall, puts him in a difficult position。 That, along with Hinata's offense getting shut down by Kamomedai, turns this game into a true struggle。 Why is Hinata playing this game in the first place? What can he do? This match was hailed, in its opening chapters, to be "The Game to Crown the New Little Giant"。 This is what Hinata has been building towards from the very beginning, earning that title and taking it for himself。It's one big finale that brings the series back to its roots, shows how far they've gone and how far they still have to go, and gives our main protagonist the chance to finally achieve his objective goal。 If Nekoma was the long-hyped rivalry that meant the most to the cast personally, Kamomedai is the inevitable wall that objectively represents everything Karasuno is fighting for。 Both as a team, and as individuals。 。。。more

i read somewhere that furudate doesn't have a game plan for most characters, and it shines through somewhat during various chapters。 i have much less emotional investment in this game, and the opposing team, but having hoshiumi directly parallel hinata is a great catalyst for the latter's (metaphorical) growth。 the regression of asahi and tsukishima's abilities are fairly telling of the outcome of the game, though i'm sure there will be one last level-up before the final point。 i read somewhere that furudate doesn't have a game plan for most characters, and it shines through somewhat during various chapters。 i have much less emotional investment in this game, and the opposing team, but having hoshiumi directly parallel hinata is a great catalyst for the latter's (metaphorical) growth。 the regression of asahi and tsukishima's abilities are fairly telling of the outcome of the game, though i'm sure there will be one last level-up before the final point。 。。。more

I'm getting Asahi and Kei regression arc whiffs from this volume。 Let's see how those will turn out!Korai's backstory was also incredibly precious and made me understand why volleyball is so important to him in a different way from Hinata。 He found a way to use his height to make himself stronger, even if he won't be seen that way by the rest of the world。 It's kind of sad。 I'm getting Asahi and Kei regression arc whiffs from this volume。 Let's see how those will turn out!Korai's backstory was also incredibly precious and made me understand why volleyball is so important to him in a different way from Hinata。 He found a way to use his height to make himself stronger, even if he won't be seen that way by the rest of the world。 It's kind of sad。 。。。more

This is such an entertaining match! I love battles/matches where there's a creeping horror that you're playing right into the opponents' hands and you struggle to get out of it。 Mostly because the satisfaction at the end definitely makes up for the struggle!Hoshiumi's backstory was funny, heartbreaking, and inspiring all at once。 He's such a great character, both in personality and on the court。 But Karasuno's no slouch and watching them adapt to their opponent is engaging and rewarding。Not sure This is such an entertaining match!
