4。5 stars。 This was unexpectedly amazing。 Unique worldbuilding, gorgeous art, and most of all, complex characterization。 I'm still emotional about Hashima and Hibiki, whose heartbreaking relationship is currently overshadowing the main pairing, even though I love them too。 4。5 stars。 This was unexpectedly amazing。 Unique worldbuilding, gorgeous art, and most of all, complex characterization。 I'm still emotional about Hashima and Hibiki, whose heartbreaking relationship is currently overshadowing the main pairing, even though I love them too。 。。。more

POSSIBLE TW: SEXUAL ASSAULT/VIOLENCEI figured I'd add that in case anyone is looking through reviews to see what triggers this book has。 It's pretty alright。 Not the best thing I've read, but decently enjoyable。 The characters are alright and it's an interesting set-up。 Still not really a fan of Hashima or Hibiki, but I get the feeling they're not meant to be likeable so that's fine。 POSSIBLE TW: SEXUAL ASSAULT/VIOLENCEI figured I'd add that in case anyone is looking through reviews to see what triggers this book has。 It's pretty alright。 Not the best thing I've read, but decently enjoyable。 The characters are alright and it's an interesting set-up。 Still not really a fan of Hashima or Hibiki, but I get the feeling they're not meant to be likeable so that's fine。 。。。more

Hirotaka Kisaragi is a must-buy mangaka for me。 And this book didn't disappoint。 A sci-fi story set in Tokyo in the near future about the so called hangers, convicted druggers with special abilities, who - together with their cop keepers - go after other criminal druggers whose strength and powers no one else can match。 Great story, amazing drawings。 Hirotaka Kisaragi is a must-buy mangaka for me。 And this book didn't disappoint。 A sci-fi story set in Tokyo in the near future about the so called hangers, convicted druggers with special abilities, who - together with their cop keepers - go after other criminal druggers whose strength and powers no one else can match。 Great story, amazing drawings。 。。。more

。。。more

I really enjoyed this。 I lied how all the characters are unique and each have their own little quirks。 I’m intrigued to see how it continues。

I saw the pretty art and bought this manga expecting to see bishounen with just enough hint of flirtation to spark my imagination (like "Free")。 What I didn't realize is that it actually is the BL genre (per the stamp on the back cover) and there was even a brief smut scene, which was surprising considering there's no "explicit" parental advisory and the manga wasn't plastic-sealed。On the whole I thought this manga was good。 The characters have unique personalities and individual abilities that I saw the pretty art and bought this manga expecting to see bishounen with just enough hint of flirtation to spark my imagination (like "Free")。 What I didn't realize is that it actually is the BL genre (per the stamp on the back cover) and there was even a brief smut scene, which was surprising considering there's no "explicit" parental advisory and the manga wasn't plastic-sealed。On the whole I thought this manga was good。 The characters have unique personalities and individual abilities that get more interesting as the story evolves and more of their facets are revealed。 I will say that I typically prefer yaoi with 25% plot and 75% romance, and this was more like 90% action and fight scenes and 10% romantic potential。The main character is a rookie cop, freshly assigned to work with a "Hanger," a drug-addicted criminal。 These partnerships are common on the police force。 Drugs in this world infuse humans with special powers (super strength, the ability to heal others, etc。), so not only are Hangers physically superior to most humans, but they also have knowledge of other criminals and their activities。 So they trade their help in catching other drug-addicted crooks for reduced sentences。 Most of them have hundreds of years to spend in custody, so they work hard to try and have some kind of life outside of prison some day。 The cops (or "Keepers") they partner with sort of "control" them with a bracelet called a "lock。" If the Hanger gets too far away from his or her Keeper, they will be incapacitated (or killed?) by the device。 So it is in the criminal Hangers' best interests to play nice and work companionably with their cop Keepers。For me, the main character tends to fade into the background。 He's a cookie-cut figure, a rookie cop who doesn't know anything about anything and therefore has to be mentored and is often teased by everyone around him。 He doesn't have a lot of his own personality as of yet。 His Hanger, on the other hand, is very mysterious。 He has no memories prior to his arrest, though the reason for that is not explained in volume 1 of the manga。 (And for some reason I am suspicious as to whether he even has amnesia or if he's lying about it, because he always gets quiet when someone mentions it。。。) It's kind of adorable that he fights off his addiction cravings with food, because he's always hungry and likes for the rookie to prepare his meals。 Which is about the only "romantic" thing going on between them at this point。Halfway through volume 1, a second Hanger/Keeper couple is introduced。 Sometimes I found them annoying, but they grew on me。 The Hanger is a major flirt。 His Keeper is the nerdy, rude genius type。 I kind of have a thing for those standoffish characters with glasses who condescend to everyone around them。 lol They are an actual couple and have had feelings for each other since they were in college together, before things went south and one of them turned to a life of crime。 They are the more interesting couple, all things considered, and they're the ones that have a love scene in this volume, because this Hanger has to control his drug cravings with sex。All in all, an interesting setup。 Like I said, I prefer a lot more romance than this volume delivered, but the world is complex and required a lot of building and explanation up to now。 I'm hoping the story heats up in the next couple of volumes。 I can forgive a slow start when the storytelling is as rewarding as this one, and the manga felt really long and took me three sittings to finish reading。 It doesn't feel like an info-dump, though, because everything is shown, not just told, to the reader。 You get your money's worth。 。。。more

(except sometimes Tsukumo is kind on the inside)3)The romance I suspect is blooming is awesome! It's a slow burner and it's built on tension, irritation and intrigue。 Zeroichi sees Tsukumo as weak。 I just love these interactions! And this is coming from someone who has never read a romance novel in her life。There are so many cool tidbits about the characters and universe we discover - and that's how you do world-building, ladies and gents。 Bit by bit, not too much but not too little。My ship sailed away with my heart。 When Tsukumo gets hurt, Zeroichi calls for 24/7 witness protection, which comes in the form of Zeroichi protecting Tsukumo 24/7 and so, needs to live with him, I'm fangirling too much。Side-not: Another another team of 'bounty hunters' are introduced - both Hanger and Keeper named Hibiki (a pain-in-the-ass know it all ex-drugger) and Hashima is a sweetheart and a bit of a tease。 There are not only rivalries and tension between hanga]er and keeper but between couples! I friggen love this! And when you find out about Hibiki and Hashima's backstories I guarantee you'll shed at least one tear for their loyalty and dedication to each other。[image error]And so the baddies get bigger, the romance gets stronger, the world-building more intricate, the humour funnier and the action more packed。 I really, really recommend this book to everyone who loves manga。 The only reason I dropped a star is that I felt that there is something bigger at play that could have been introduced earlier on。 I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

But I do think that just a little more detail would have been very useful。As for the main characters, I liked both of them。 The author describes the manga as a buddy cop story in the afterward, and this is definitely felt in the interactions of Investigator Hajime Tsukumo and his hanger Zeroichi。 They have very different personalities and experiences, and their interactions are fun。 I really enjoyed reading about these two, and I found myself sympathizing a great deal with Hajime’s situation in the beginning of the manga。There are certain places where the plot about capturing drug lords and thwarting terrorist acts in the city takes a back seat to Hajime and Zeroichi’s relationship。 That said, I do like their relationship and want to see it grow, but a better balance between these two story elements could have been achieved。 On a similar note, another hanger team is introduced and focused on quite heavily in the later chapters of this volume。 While I was intrigued by the new characters and the mystery of Zeroichi warnings, I couldn’t help but feel like the story was diverted a little too much。 Both new characters are very interesting, with a tragic backstory and very deserving of their own arc somewhere down the line。 Having this placed only a few chapters into the first volume detracts from getting to know our two main characters better and the setting up of plots and themes that will run throughout the series。The fight scenes are a lot of fun。 Zeroichi has inhuman strength, as do many of the drug dealers。 This leads to some over the top scenes with lots of bodies flying through walls。 What could have turned into standard over the top fighting fare that is often found in manga was grounded by the consequences of this type of fighting。 There is humor in it, at times, with the characters exactly aware of how over the top, how strong and inhuman it all is。 Being thrown through a wall isn’t something that is simply shaken off。 It has very real consequences。 Hajime, who isn’t enhanced by nanotechnology, also is a much more of a liability in fights, something that is addressed within the manga。A lot of promise lays in this series。 Certain elements remind me of other near future police based manga and anime。 Honestly, I’d read more just for that alone。 The two main characters are both very likable and interesting。 I want to know how their professional and personal relationships are going to evolve。 I want to know more about Zeroichi’s past and what made him amnesic。 I want to know how Hajime’s inability to use nanotechnology will affect him。 I want to learn more about both of their pasts。Now, I read this manga as an e-arc, and I have to say that certain fonts were almost completely unreadable。 Usually this isn’t something I’d draw attention to, but seeing as that I haven’t found other TokyoPop arcs to be of this sort of quality I would suggest flipping through the physical copy before purchasing it just to ensure that everything is readable。Hanger Vol 1 by Hirotaka Kisaragi was a fun manga I will probably continue with。 If you like yaoi manga or near future science fiction I would suggest picking up a copy。I received this manga from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。This review and more can be found at Looking Glass Reads。 。。。more

I’ve recently started exploring manga, although I haven’t read much yet。 As a newbie, I thought the premise of Hanger was interesting enough, but the execution of the story wasn’t as strong as it could be。Set in a future version of Tokyo, the plot involves two young men, Hajime and Zeroichi。 Hajime is a traffic cop who is transferred into a special division that involves him partnering as a “Keeper” with a convicted criminal known as a “hanger。” Hangers are humans who have been enhanced by nanot I’ve recently started exploring manga, although I haven’t read much yet。 As a newbie, I thought the premise of Hanger was interesting enough, but the execution of the story wasn’t as strong as it could be。Set in a future version of Tokyo, the plot involves two young men, Hajime and Zeroichi。 Hajime is a traffic cop who is transferred into a special division that involves him partnering as a “Keeper” with a convicted criminal known as a “hanger。” Hangers are humans who have been enhanced by nanotechnology to the point that they can be dangerous to the people around them。 If such heavily enhanced individuals commit a crime, they work off their sentence by bringing in other criminals under the supervision of their Keeper。 Hajime is heavily in debt because of his deceased mother’s medical bills, so he agrees to participate in the program, even though nanotech doesn’t work on him at all, leaving him extremely vulnerable to the violence he encounters。 He’s also becomes somewhat fascinated by Zeroichi and wants to help this strange man with whom he works。So far, so good。 The problem is that there are a few too many repetitive scenes of Zeroichi or other hangers attacking criminals。 Scenes that aren’t even particularly well thought out, in my opinion; everybody sure crashes through walls a lot。 That takes the focus away from the relationship developing between the two men, which is the much more interesting part of the story。 Although even that aspect of the narrative feels a bit formulaic to me。The one thing that really intrigued me is the mystery of Zeroichi’s past。 He doesn’t remember anything prior to the previous year, and Hajime can’t find any information about any crime he committed。 I’m curious enough that I may just pick up the next volume to see how that plot point develops。A copy of this book was provided through NetGalley for review; all opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more

What appears to be another hit from Kisaragi, Hanger is set up to be a great new manga series that is a must read for fans。 Unfortunately I had a hard time reading it due to format issues, which hopefully will not translate out into the actual novel copies。Hanger jumps right into the action with a nice opening scene presenting us with both main characters front and center。 It gives us readers a sense of Zeroichi (01) and Hajimes' relationship and sets us up for great character development throug What appears to be another hit from Kisaragi, Hanger is set up to be a great new manga series that is a must read for fans。 Unfortunately I had a hard time reading it due to format issues, which hopefully will not translate out into the actual novel copies。Hanger jumps right into the action with a nice opening scene presenting us with both main characters front and center。 It gives us readers a sense of Zeroichi (01) and Hajimes' relationship and sets us up for great character development throughout the series。 The backdrop for this relationship is well thought out and (even if a tad cliched) seems to work well with Kisaragis' style。 。。。more
