There are quite a few twist and turns in this first compendium yet there are also a couple of issues that seem to be padding。 Kirkman really does change things up about the super hero genre and he also knows how to pay homage at the same time。 If you are coming at this because of the Amazon animated show like I was there are quite a few deviations in plotting from the book an the show。 Yet the integrity of the story and the major plot elements are still intact。

Invincilble is one of the best comic books ever written。 15 years of consistent storytelling。 Comic books at the highest form。

Invincible has been a very hot topic recently with the premiere of Amazon Prime's show based on this comic。 Before diving into the show, I decided to check this out and it did a great job introducing me to this brand new superhero universe。 Robert Kidman is a genius。 I've said that occasionally while reading the comics for the walking dead, but for this series to be excellent as well shows that his masterful storytelling is no fluke。 It balances humor, romance, and action even better than I woul Invincible has been a very hot topic recently with the premiere of Amazon Prime's show based on this comic。 Before diving into the show, I decided to check this out and it did a great job introducing me to this brand new superhero universe。 Robert Kidman is a genius。 I've said that occasionally while reading the comics for the walking dead, but for this series to be excellent as well shows that his masterful storytelling is no fluke。 It balances humor, romance, and action even better than I would have guessed going in。 It's very self-aware as well which makes it even more enjoyable than the fantastic series of events in the thousand or so pages in this compendium。 I'm very excited to continue this series soon。For those unfamiliar, this series revolves around a young man named Mark。 Mark is a regular, average, everyday son of a superhero until he discovers his own superpowers。 The series practically begins with Mark discovering his powers and his dad teaching him to use said powers against potential threats to Earth and Mankind。 Out of fear of spoiling anything, I will just end the synopsis there。Invincible holds little back when it comes to gore。 There's a lot of red on these colorful pages, but that's what makes it great。 It's not afraid to show the dangers of superheroes and villains。 It's gritty, it's raw, and it's exciting。 I had such a great time reading this that I couldn't justify giving this first batch of issues anything less than 5 stars! 。。。more

4。75 stars。 This was a long read, collecting nearly 50 issues of Robert Kirkman's comic series, along with a few assorted odds and ends。 Part of the reason I'm not giving this a full five stars is because one of those extra bits (Invincible's appearance in The Pact #4) really wasn't up to the standards of the rest of the material。 Other than that, the whole "compendium" is funny, exciting, and beautifully drawn。 Not a Watchmen-style postmodern breakdown of Superhero tropes, but rather a smart, c 4。75 stars。 This was a long read, collecting nearly 50 issues of Robert Kirkman's comic series, along with a few assorted odds and ends。 Part of the reason I'm not giving this a full five stars is because one of those extra bits (Invincible's appearance in The Pact #4) really wasn't up to the standards of the rest of the material。 Other than that, the whole "compendium" is funny, exciting, and beautifully drawn。 Not a Watchmen-style postmodern breakdown of Superhero tropes, but rather a smart, clever, and very bloody celebration of the genre。 Highly recommended for anyone who grew up reading Marvel and DC。 。。。more

4。5 stars for the first part of this series。 (Disclaimer: Technically, I just read the first 9 volumes of Invincible, not this actual Compendium but I don't like logging individual volumes)The first third of this series has been awesome! Overall, this first compendium of Invincible is pretty mediocre。For the sake of a plot that moves as fast as possible, the first arc lacks character depth which is especially disappointing in direct contrast to the TV show。 While this gets better and better over time, my overall experience never got over the threshold of being solidly entertaining。 Additionally, I have to bump my rating down one star due to constantly present sexism。

Excellent! Very silly, well thought out and extremely well written, sometimes the dialogue lags。 Overall extremely worth the read。

This is excellent if a little rough around the edges early on。 If you like seeing the early genesis of two undeniable masters of the craft, pick this up。 If you'd rather hold out for a more mature look, well, you can start reading midway through (that's how I started on Invincible back in 2008)。 Still! What would it all be like if that very human person someday got similar powers for himself? Co-created by writer Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and artist Cory Walker (who draws the first seven issues), this beloved comic book series follows a young hero’s journey to discovering the very busy life of a superhero while going through all the cumbersome and mundane obstacles that young adults are bound to face in life。 This compendium collects issues #0-47 (the first nine trade paperbacks), an Invincible story from the Image Comics Summer Special, and The Pact #4。What is Invincible (Compendium One) about? The story follows Mark Grayson, a senior who goes to a normal American high school, who is pretty close to graduating and getting ready to head to college。 He has a part-time job that sucks the life out of him but he understands that he needs to make ends meet。 Although he seems quite normal, maybe even boring to some, there’s one thing that makes him stand out from the rest of the world: his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet and he’s known as Omni-Man。 As a kid, his father revealed to him that he was part of an alien race called Viltrumites and that someday he too would develop powers like him, from superhuman strength to high-speed flight。 Fortunately for him, he discovers these powers at the age of 17。 Unfortunately for him, he also discovers a terrifying secret regarding his father that will leave a permanent mark on this young hero’s life forever。This comic book series is a fantastic homage to superhero stories。 With the first couple of issues, writer Robert Kirkman draws upon the rich and diverse superhero worlds established through both DC Comics and Marvel to present his own universe。 At first conveying a parodic tone, reeling readers into this world by teasing them with innumerable references, it is only upon the grand reveal regarding young Mark Grayson’s father that the series flips the tropes upside down and redirects his narrative to focus on the myriad of characters he’s established, especially his young and growing protagonist。 His series isn’t just about casual superhero action through an episodic story-telling format, although there is plenty of that brilliantly interspersed throughout this compendium, but rather looks into these characters’ plights and their day-to-day quandaries。 From dealing with psychological trauma to unraveling love interests, the series brilliantly explores these characters on an intimate and individual level while building up the overarching story revolving around countless villains trying to wreak havoc on Earth despite all the heroes it houses。If its appropriately paced story-telling and incredibly ensnaring cliffhangers weren’t enough to keep readers going, its wonderful artwork will surely draw many readers’ attention。 Impactful, colourful, and expressive, the artistic design for this comic book series never drops in quality。 Mostly advocating larger panels, giving the characters much more room to breathe (or rather to talk), the artwork strategically flows by investing more time on character-to-character interactions, while occasionally rewarding readers with intense and epic action sequences that are highlighted periodically with gore, and crowned by beautiful splash pages。 Speaking of characters, the sheer imagination, although sometimes simply inspired by already beloved superheroes from the two known giant comic book publishers, is quite impressive, never failing to tickle readers with thanks to the creative team’s silly artistic concepts。 The universe in itself is also without frontiers and continuously explores various settings, often also sending readers to intergalactic universes that naturally expand the lore, fantasy ideas, and science-fiction elements。 While the series does take some time before truly taking off, it’s safe to say that once it does, it’s hard to ignore its potential。Invincible (Compendium One) is a grounded, vivid, and at times graphically violent young adult’s coming-of-age story that juggles the young hero’s everyday life with superhero duties requiring him to save the world。Yours truly,Lashaan | Blogger and Book ReviewerOfficial blog: https://bookidote。com/ 。。。more

It's okay!At first。。。 I was outright bored。 Six issues of nothing。 I mean, it was kindof cute, this Norman Rockwell version of mundane superhero life, but it wasn't particularly different from any superhero work I had read that dealt with that (and I'm already blasé and choosy when it comes to the genre)。 But then the end of issue seven happened。 And my attitude went from disinterest to starving for more! However, there were still plenty of 1-6-ish issues thereafter that felt like your standard superhero fare, like focusing on beating up the villains of the day who have no real seemingly significant impact on the story or school life, dating life。 And while that may have been the human parts I was supposed to connect with, it was a bit of a chore for me to get through in a couple weeks。For me, the highs of this story (maybe this particular arc) are the parts that deal with Mark and his father, and their relationship specifically。 Ultimately, the family at the core of this colorful frenzy are the people I care about。 And Allan。 Allan is cool。This book doesn't exactly make me want to leap into the next compendium, and maybe the show will make some tweaks that will have me hunger for more material, but it was worth the read。 It was okay。 Also, hats off to Corey Walker and Ryan Ottley。 。。。more

I appreciate how this story went from 0 to 100 in no time。 The world building was excellent, too。 I don’t know if starting out this series with a compendium was a good idea because dang this book is involved。 But overall I enjoyed this and I’m looking forward to watching the TV adaptation。

Dang, it has been a long time since I read a comic。 The last comic, to my knowledge, was Maus, and I read it about four years ago, my freshman year over summer。 That Book I would recommend to anyone because it is so deep and at times hard to read。 I heard that Amazon was making this into a tv show, and before it came out, I was in complete aw。 The show had Steven Yeun, J K Simmons, Mark Hamill, and Seth Rogen。 The show is stacked with talent and skill。 Leading it all off was Robert Kirkman, the Dang, it has been a long time since I read a comic。 The last comic, to my knowledge, was Maus, and I read it about four years ago, my freshman year over summer。 That Book I would recommend to anyone because it is so deep and at times hard to read。 I heard that Amazon was making this into a tv show, and before it came out, I was in complete aw。 The show had Steven Yeun, J K Simmons, Mark Hamill, and Seth Rogen。 The show is stacked with talent and skill。 Leading it all off was Robert Kirkman, the writer of the comic。 So the show had a stacked team behind it and the master mind of the Walking Dead。 I so was hyped watched it day one was was blown away。 I remember as a kid going to the comic book store, buying comics, and buying comic book cards。 I remember reading Marvel and DC comics。 This Book is not a DC or Marvel book, and it does not want to be one; it is an Image comic。 This means the comic is about breaking what it means to be a superhero and twisting it, making it so much more thought proving。 The book asks the right questions about what it means to be a hero and the cost both mentally and physically。 Tv shows vs。 the book。 I always hate this question because everyone says the book and me being a more monkey see monkey do kind of person(Visual learner) I say movie。 It was because of that comics were the 1st true stories I read。 I always liked comics and movies because it didn't waste time talking about a tree or some useless item or building。 It always about the story every word makes something move forward most of the time。 This might be the 1st book; I will undoubtedly say the book far better than its big-screen counterpart。 The book starts in a great place to introduce the characters, and the 1st ark of the teacher is a great start but is never seen or heard of in the tv show。 This book is better because it shows more to these well-defined characters。 The art style is simple and gets the point across in a perfect way。 This is a top-notch comic book/book/graphic novel。 Whatever you call it is excellent and well deserving of a read。 。。。more

I'm conflicted about Invincible。 The plotting in this first compendium is fun, full of twists of both the "save the world," superhero variety and the more personal, human kind。 The art is dynamic, the character design is interesting, and the series balances straightforward storytelling with more meta touches that both inform the story and add some humor。 Mark Grayson's growth as a superhero and person is portrayed compellingly, as he finds friendships and deals with conflicts。 That's the good st I'm conflicted about Invincible。 The plotting in this first compendium is fun, full of twists of both the "save the world," superhero variety and the more personal, human kind。 The art is dynamic, the character design is interesting, and the series balances straightforward storytelling with more meta touches that both inform the story and add some humor。 Mark Grayson's growth as a superhero and person is portrayed compellingly, as he finds friendships and deals with conflicts。 That's the good stuff。 The bad stuff is that this is a collection of comics from 2003-2007, and they don't always age well。 Non-white characters are often villains, or at least duplicitous (literally, in the case of Dupli-Kate) or suspect。 The "humor" can sometimes take the form of severely dated "jokes" about something seeming "gay" or a character sounding "retarded。" And while Atom Eve gets a nice speech about being more than just the cute pink girl superhero, the art and a lot of the plotting undercuts this by ogling her body at every opportunity and making her entire life revolve around the men in it。 By the end of this collection, I was starting to feel like the book was losing sight of what made the story compelling in the first place -- its "Spider-Man with a twist" approach where a teenager figures out his identity and relationships while having to balance that with huge conflicts, some of them deeply emotional。 But when flying to Mars and back is as easy as taking a long weekend, the stakes start to feel a bit hollow。 Looking ahead at the next compendiums, I don't think I'll be continuing with Invincible。 That said, and for all its (very real) problems, I enjoyed this first collection and will probably be returning to these first issues at some point in the future。 。。。more

I don't think I have ever read a book by Robert Kirkman, but seeing commercials for Prime's new Invincible series, I was prompted to pick this one up。 I love how Kirman uses tropes to take us somewhere else。 Partially, this graphic novel reminded me a bit of The Boys Omnibus Vol。 1, but does set itself apart from it in many ways。 They simply share some aspects。 That being said, I really liked the characters in this and the story was pretty cool too。 There is a lot of great action in this and the I don't think I have ever read a book by Robert Kirkman, but seeing commercials for Prime's new Invincible series, I was prompted to pick this one up。 I love how Kirman uses tropes to take us somewhere else。 Partially, this graphic novel reminded me a bit of The Boys Omnibus Vol。 1, but does set itself apart from it in many ways。 They simply share some aspects。 That being said, I really liked the characters in this and the story was pretty cool too。 There is a lot of great action in this and the story is great。 I think the adaption on Prime does a great job at laying out the story and keeping in the spirit of the graphic novel。 So, if you enjoy this then I recommend checking it out。 This compendium covers quite a bit and it is a good break-in before you watch。 I look forward to the next couple of volumes to see where this story goes。 。。。more
