Summary

The author of Roller Girl is back with a graphic novel about starting middle school, surviving your embarrassing family, and the Renaissance Faire。

Eleven-year-old Imogene (Impy) has grown up with two parents working at the Renaissance Faire, and she's eager to begin her own training as a squire。 First, though, she'll need to prove her bravery。 Luckily Impy has just the quest in mind--she'll go to public school after a life of being homeschooled! But it's not easy to act like a noble knight-in-training in middle school。 Impy falls in with a group of girls who seem really nice (until they don't) and starts to be embarrassed of her thrift shop apparel, her family's unusual lifestyle, and their small, messy apartment。 Impy has always thought of herself as a heroic knight, but when she does something really mean in order to fit in, she begins to wonder whether she might be more of a dragon after all。

This book was fine。 It was pretty fun, and entertaining, but there were some parts I didn't like about it and over all it is nothing particularly special。 I am not a huge fan of just quick, fun, and shallow graphic novels like the one, it is just not really my thing。 This book was fine。 It was pretty fun, and entertaining, but there were some parts I didn't like about it and over all it is nothing particularly special。 I am not a huge fan of just quick, fun, and shallow graphic novels like the one, it is just not really my thing。 。。。more

I just loved this graphic novel so much! It really captured middle school in all it’s snobby, awkward glory as well as the quest to find yourself when you feel lost。 Highly recommend!

It took me a while to get through this book but in the end I liked it。 It’s a unique story about a homeschool girl starting middle school in public school while being part of a Renaissance faire。 I like that Imogene learns to deal with bullying (both being the bully and being bullied) and not lying。 I also like that she deals with her family having less money than other kids’ families which is an important lesson that readers should learn about。 Overall I’d recommend this and Victoria Jamieson’s It took me a while to get through this book but in the end I liked it。 It’s a unique story about a homeschool girl starting middle school in public school while being part of a Renaissance faire。 I like that Imogene learns to deal with bullying (both being the bully and being bullied) and not lying。 I also like that she deals with her family having less money than other kids’ families which is an important lesson that readers should learn about。 Overall I’d recommend this and Victoria Jamieson’s other graphic novels as well。 。。。more

I think 2021 is the year of graphic novels for me, I just cannot get enough of them! I LOVED Victoria Jamieson's Roller Girl and co-written When Stars are Scattered and All's Faire in Middle School did not disappoint。 Like Roller Girl, Jamieson focuses on that most awkward period of a child's life - middle school。 And more specifically, the roller coaster of navigating friendships。 Imogene was happily homeschooled, learning on the grounds of her local Renaissance Faire where her parents worked。 I think 2021 is the year of graphic novels for me, I just cannot get enough of them! I LOVED Victoria Jamieson's Roller Girl and co-written When Stars are Scattered and All's Faire in Middle School did not disappoint。 Like Roller Girl, Jamieson focuses on that most awkward period of a child's life - middle school。 And more specifically, the roller coaster of navigating friendships。 Imogene was happily homeschooled, learning on the grounds of her local Renaissance Faire where her parents worked。 Then she decided she wants to go to real school。。。 just in time to start middle school。 The year is looking up as she is now old enough to Squire and become a performing member of the faire troupe but things are less exciting at school。 She is overwhelmed with her science class and the girls she thought were her friends start picking on her。 She starts acting out in different ways and must learn a few lessons and take a few hits before regaining lost relationships。What I love most about Jamieson's work so far is that each of her graphic novels orbit around a niche hobby - roller derby and Renaissance Faires。 The camaraderie and joy these groups have with each other and doing what they love is really inspiring。 Both books have made me want to try these new hobbies (despite the fact that they don't even align with my interests) because she embodies them with such passion and love。 And although it stresses me out and makes my heart hurt, Jamieson also perfectly (PERFECTLY) captures the hurricane years of middle school。。。。 all those awkward moments of anger and bad decision making and the loss/gain of friends hits so hard。 She manages to make her protagonists so lovable (a wee bit hateable) and entirely human。Three five-starrers in a row, I'm 100% sold on anything Jamieson does from here on out! Perfect for all soon-to-be, current, and past (hm hm, adults) middle schoolers alike, Jamieson's graphic novels are timeless and worth every second。 。。。more

Graphic novel about a homeschooled 11-year old that goes to a physical school for the first time when she starts 6th grade。 She faces many challenges in her attempts to try to fit in with the wrong crowd and getting in trouble with her science teacher。 Even though the main character is a girl, I want to remember this book for when my son and daughter are old enough to read it。

I loved this story! Coming from a Grade 6 girl, this is perfect for either genders, but I'd say Grade 5-7 is a good range in readers。 This book was very lovingly planned out, and I can tell the Author wanted for us to see that。 This graphic novel, or comic book, was very nice and perfect for those looking for an easy read, but action-packed and loaded with adventure。 I love all the twists and turns。 So, here is a list of genres I'd say it was。-Drama-Adventure-Fantasy (Sort-of, though all the fan I loved this story! Maybe 2。5? A lot of the school situations the main character, Imogen, goes through come across very real (name brand vs。 knockoff shoes, where to sit when you're new, nervousness about riding the bus)。 However, this book dragged, especially the Renaissance Faire stuff with all the old-timey talk and acting formalities。 I also found the interactions between poor Imogen and other characters (especially adults) just hard to read。 The male teacher makes a lot of comments about girlfriends/boyfriends Maybe 2。5? Moving from a homeschool setting into the fray of a public middle-school would have been the death of me, personally, but Imogene persists。 Puberty, peer-to-peer relationships, personal discovery, and a sense of family all are hot topics in this coming of age story。 The Renaissance backdrop, and the way it is weaved into titles in the book made for a book that I could not put down。 However, the mother in me did root for her punishment when things get out of hand。 Perseverance and kindness are de Moving from a homeschool setting into the fray of a public middle-school would have been the death of me, personally, but Imogene persists。 Puberty, peer-to-peer relationships, personal discovery, and a sense of family all are hot topics in this coming of age story。 The Renaissance backdrop, and the way it is weaved into titles in the book made for a book that I could not put down。 However, the mother in me did root for her punishment when things get out of hand。 Perseverance and kindness are definitely strong themes when All's Faire in Middle School。 。。。more

"Imogene。 You are not a bad person。 We all have a little dragon inside of us。 It's just a matter of keeping it tamed。"I really liked this graphic novel that told the story of Imogene, a Renaissance Faire guru who has been homeschooled up until middle school。 Imogene is so excited to start middle school, but she doesn't anticipate how challenging navigating middle school will be。 Imogene's family doesn't have a lot of money and Imogene immediately feels the pressure of keeping up with the popular "Imogene。 You are not a bad person。 We all have a little dragon inside of us。 It's just a matter of keeping it tamed。"I really liked this graphic novel that told the story of Imogene, a Renaissance Faire guru who has been homeschooled up until middle school。 Imogene is so excited to start middle school, but she doesn't anticipate how challenging navigating middle school will be。 Imogene's family doesn't have a lot of money and Imogene immediately feels the pressure of keeping up with the popular kids who have invited her to join their circle。 Imogene is embarrassed to share about her family or how her family makes their money working at the Renaissance Faire every weekend。 Imogene is training to be a knight at Faire, but she keeps making mistakes that land her in more and more trouble。 School isn't as easy as she thought, and navigating the social structures of middle school is downright confusing。 Socially awkward Anita is Imogene's friend at Faire on the weekends but wants nothing to do with her at school。 How will Imogene ever figure out how to navigate middle school? This story was so well done。 Imogene was completely relatable and Jamieson did a fantastic job of developing the setting around Faire that I think readers unfamiliar with Renaissance Faires will be able to figure out what Faire is all about。 The friendship and school challenges seem entirely too realistic and my heart broke for Imogene as she was forced to deal with these challenges all at once as she got used to public school。 I was excited to see Imogene had such a strong support system at home and with other members of the Faire。 There were so many adults in Imogene's corner cheering her on! This is a graphic novel I know I could hand to a reluctant reader and they would enjoy。 I'm definitely a lifelong fan of Jamieson's work now and I will read any story she writes。This would be appropriate for upper elementary and middle grade readers。TW: bullying 。。。more

Really enjoyed the audio version-fill cast with music and all。 Sad to miss Victoria’s amazing artwork, but still tells a great story。 Middle School is the worst, especially for a home schooled girl who’s family isn’t well off and works at the Renaissance Faire。 Great depiction of adults including teachers who just don’t get kids。 Sadly a bit mature for my students。 Third and fourth graders will be interested due to the artwork but with a few mentions of sex I think it won’t be a good fit。

I was strongly reminded of Mean Girls in some ways。 I had a few instances of facepalming and wanting to talk sense into Imogene, then remembered how 11-year-olds would think。 For instance, take Sasha。 Mika mistreated Sasha just as she mistreated Anita and Imogene。 At first, I was getting annoyed that Imogene couldn't see what was to me obvious- that Sasha was unhappy in her friendship with Mika, and that Mika often turned on Sasha also。 While Sasha did not easily jump to Imogene's defense, it se I was strongly reminded of Mean Girls in some ways。 I had a few instances of facepalming and wanting to talk sense into Imogene, then remembered how 11-year-olds would think。 For instance, take Sasha。 Mika mistreated Sasha just as she mistreated Anita and Imogene。 At first, I was getting annoyed that Imogene couldn't see what was to me obvious- that Sasha was unhappy in her friendship with Mika, and that Mika often turned on Sasha also。 While Sasha did not easily jump to Imogene's defense, it seemed obvious she was very uncomfortable。After some thought, it occurred to me that while I can easily say this as a 34-year-old woman disconnected completely from this fictional situation, in actuality just like Imogene, I would have assumed Sasha was on the mean girl Mika's side。 To a child being bullied, the bystanders, the people being silent, are assumed to be complicit with the behavior of the bully。 While the reader could tell Sasha was very uncomfortable with Mika's behavior because of the drawn expressions of discomfiture, as a survivor of many years bullying myself I know that you sort of disconnect from your own body and your vision shrinks。 All the bystanders blur together into one cruel entity supporting the ringleaders。 Imogene observing how uncomfortable Sasha was immediately would've bene unrealistic。 Considering that Mika mistreats Sasha a lot too, for instance butting into the conversation when Sasha and Imogene are enthusiastically voicing a shared interest in a book series and Mika got all insecure and turned mean to end that conversation in which she got the briefest taste of being the outsider, hopefully the series ends with Sasha being friends with Imogene and Anita and ditching Mika completely。 Sadly, from my own memories of school things were far more complex and that outcome is unlikely, but one can hope。Years down the line when the characters are all adults, if Mika does not improve as a person with time, of course, the people she targeted can take satisfaction in the fact that likely most of Mika's "friends" will stop talking to her after high school, because as adults they will realize they don't need such a toxic friend in their life。 That is exactly how things turned out for a couple of girl bullies that graduated with me, both the stereotypical popular mean girls and the one Janis Ian-esque "unpopular mean girl" 。。。more

I trudged through this one。 I’ve never needed 2 weeks to finish a graphic novel。 I can’t really explain why I didn’t love it。 Imogen is a great character dealing with a lot of common middle school problems, and the way she deals with them is very realistic。 She makes bad decisions。 She regrets them。 She has to deal with the consequences。 She learns。 That part is truly great。 Honestly I think it was the part about the faire that I didn’t love。。。and that was quite an important part of the book。 I I trudged through this one。 I’ve never needed 2 weeks to finish a graphic novel。 I can’t really explain why I didn’t love it。 Imogen is a great character dealing with a lot of common middle school problems, and the way she deals with them is very realistic。 She makes bad decisions。 She regrets them。 She has to deal with the consequences。 She learns。 That part is truly great。 Honestly I think it was the part about the faire that I didn’t love。。。and that was quite an important part of the book。 I would be interested in reading the author’s other books。 I liked the characters but not the setting。 。。。more
