I positively loved this book。 From the relationship between Tam and Nova， to the personality of Tat， to the love of the Nanas。 Demons， werewolves， witches， all composed into one wonderful graphic novel by two amazing artists。 I truly enjoyed this book and now adore the characters。 I NEED A SECOND BOOK！！！

I can’t decide between a 2 or a 3 so I’ll round up because I do support books with diverse characters and the diversity in this book is really the best part。。。and the art。 However， the story needed some refining。 There are a lot of interesting bits mentioned - in passing - but those details are never fleshed out leaving a surface story that could have been grounded with some supporting backstory。 The cute cover art belies the much darker story inside， which is fine， it was just a big disconnect I can’t decide between a 2 or a 3 so I’ll round up because I do support books with diverse characters and the diversity in this book is really the best part。。。and the art。 However， the story needed some refining。 There are a lot of interesting bits mentioned - in passing - but those details are never fleshed out leaving a surface story that could have been grounded with some supporting backstory。 The cute cover art belies the much darker story inside， which is fine， it was just a big disconnect for me。 。。。more

I had wanted this book for the longest time （I even went on a small waitlist for it at my local bookstore to be able to order it） and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed。 Mooncakes tells the tale of a world where magic is present and lives just underneath everyone’s noses， only just barely there for the curious or inquisitive。 Nova is a witch who is helping out her nanas at their bookshop café in a small suburban town。 She’s also been placed in charge of dealing with any magical disturbances in I had wanted this book for the longest time （I even went on a small waitlist for it at my local bookstore to be able to order it） and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed。 Mooncakes tells the tale of a world where magic is present and lives just underneath everyone’s noses， only just barely there for the curious or inquisitive。 Nova is a witch who is helping out her nanas at their bookshop café in a small suburban town。 She’s also been placed in charge of dealing with any magical disturbances in her area as a way of performing the one-year apprenticeship every witch has to complete。 However， Nova’s world and duties come to a halt at the visit of an old crush， Tam Lang， that has arrived to town with a very deadly mission on her back。 Will Nova be able to save both her town and her love， while also coming into her own as a mature witch？Graphic novels are a soft spot for me， especially ones involving magic。 I found the narrative told a beautiful rekindling childhood love story。 It was delicate in how it handled trauma and marginalization from your peers， intertwining discrimination that arises from qualities both magical and mundane。 The narrative was warm， letting in moments of comfort， but also allowed space for those everyday interpersonal conflicts， that every person has to go through， to arise and lay in the air for the reader to understand。 I would say， it felt too short at times， as if we had only just met these characters and although I bet making this a snapshot of their lives could have been intentional， it seemed as though I could’ve handled more context on their persons。 The story is plot driven， which is wonderful if you love being swept away into the action very quickly。 I just felt as if there was more left unsaid。 Still， I fell in love with the characters so much， every single one， and I would have definitely read a whole collection on them and this intricate world。 。。。more

Author: Suzanne WalkerIllustrator: Wendy XuAge Recommendation: TweenArt Style: Colourful and Bright。Topic/ Theme: Queer， Save Yourself。Setting: Fairytale-tale like This is one of those books I picked up on an impulse。 It has a super cute cover， clear supernatural themes and from the cover and blurb sapphic undertones。 Those sapphic tones are actually full themes。 It is a fairly simple and well paced story， two reunited old friends working together to save one from an evil。 But it is effectively d Author: Suzanne WalkerIllustrator: Wendy XuAge Recommendation: TweenArt Style: Colourful and Bright。Topic/ Theme: Queer， Save Yourself。Setting: Fairytale-tale like This is one of those books I picked up on an impulse。 It has a super cute cover， clear supernatural themes and from the cover and blurb sapphic undertones。 Those sapphic tones are actually full themes。 It is a fairly simple and well paced story， two reunited old friends working together to save one from an evil。 But it is effectively done with the art and story working well together。 The two main characters are Nova Huang and Tam Lang， a witch and a werewolf。 Tatiana is the best sort of friend。 She is a scientist who doesn't know what to make of magic only believes because Nova showed her， but she willing to walk into a fight as a mere human to defend a friend （and deal with the shock of finding out there is much more than witches later）。 The villains introduced and resolved well， in a way that is to be expected for something that is pseudo-fairytale。 There is a good balance of plot and romantic storyline， broken up well into 8 chapters and an epilogue。 Importantly， the two main characters are diverse。 Nova was raised by her queer Nanas， she has some Asian heritage and she's deaf （she uses hearing aids）。 Tam uses they/them pronouns， has a bad family history， parents got divorced and an abusive step-father。 As bad as familial violence is it is something that people experience and don't speak out about， I have total respect for authors who add those characters to their stories。 The characters are designed in a way that makes them easy to pick on sight。 Tam has a unique shock of aqua in their hair and wears gender-neutral clothing， I really appreciate that their wolf form has no similarities to their human form。 Nova's whole look is almost hyper-feminine with classic witchy touches and I think it's gorgeous。 All the members of the supporting cast are different and suiting their places。 Nova's Nanas are opposites in a way while both being very much in earth tones。 Qui is short and round， Nechama is tall and willowy and their powers when they are shown are in complementary colours （as are Tam and Nova's）。 。。。more

This was so cute and the perfect pick me up for a crummy day。 I loved the representation and all the little nods to pop culture。 The art， writing， and storyline were absolutely fantastic and kept my attention entirely。 Highly recommend。
