Summary

Neil Gaiman's seminal series, THE SANDMAN, celebrates its 30th anniversary with an all-new edition of THE SANDMAN VOL。 1: PRELUDES & NOCTURNES!

New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series THE SANDMAN is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling。 Gaiman created an unforgettable tale of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales with his own distinct narrative vision。

In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead。 After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power。 On his arduous journey Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman。

This book also includes the story "The Sound of Her Wings," which introduces us to the pragmatic and perky goth girl Death。

Collects THE SANDMAN #1-8。

I had read some of Neil Gaiman´s novels and thought I´d take a look at this series - and spending quite a nice sum on the 30th anniversary box set was no mistake! My very first Neil Gaiman read。 It was fascinating。

A bit hard for me to get into because of the number of characters, but I enjoyed Dream's character in the later stories。 The use of black characters against colored backgrounds was very striking。 A bit hard for me to get into because of the number of characters, but I enjoyed Dream's character in the later stories。 The use of black characters against colored backgrounds was very striking。 。。。more

The author takes some liberties in logic and there are a couple of “he did not just go there” moments, but his writing style overcomes any of that kind of criticism。 Great job!。 I want you to know, there is a competition happening right now until the end of May on the NovelStar app。 I hope you can consider joining。 You can also publish your stories there。 just email our editors hardy@novelstar。top, joye@novelstar。top, or lena@novelstar。top。

Crazy vibes - keen to see where the world building goes in later series。 Sometimes kinda predictable - which I guess isn't too bad of a thing。 Not a fan of the 90s comic book art style。 Crazy vibes - keen to see where the world building goes in later series。 Sometimes kinda predictable - which I guess isn't too bad of a thing。 Not a fan of the 90s comic book art style。 。。。more

An excellent start to the series。 Most people will tell you that this is one of the weaker volumes, but for me personally it's one of the better ones。 Each issue in this volume is very good, but issues 5-8 are outstanding。 Back when I read P&N, I was hooked from the first few pages。 The Sandman is my favorite comic series, and I have this book to thank for investing me in the story。 An excellent start to the series。 Most people will tell you that this is one of the weaker volumes, but for me personally it's one of the better ones。 Each issue in this volume is very good, but issues 5-8 are outstanding。 Back when I read P&N, I was hooked from the first few pages。 The Sandman is my favorite comic series, and I have this book to thank for investing me in the story。 。。。more

Creo que si fuera esta historia por separado no sería nada reseñable, espero que sea un comprensible preludio a una obra -supuestamente- imprescindible。

Dark with lots of horror throughout, Preludes and Nocturnes, reads like a comic that’s trying desperately to find its footing。 There’s a lot of recognizable characters if you’re familiar with DC。 The last installment titled The Sound of Her Wings was my favorite; in it the character Death is introduced。 My rating increased from three to four stars because Death was represented in a creative and unconventional manner。

Wish I had the real book not the Kindle versionIt didn’t occur to me that reading a graphic novel would be so awkward on electronic media。Nonetheless, I liked the story and will look for the sequels in hard copy。

I’m torn on what to say here。 First, to give some context on why I read this graphic novel, ever since a friend of mine wanted badly to buy The Sandman series, I was interested on reading it。 It took me several years to start because I wanted to buy all the series at once, without knowing much about what was about。 So, instead, I decided this year to buy the Kindle version of the first volume to make sure I liked it before continuing with the rest。 On one hand, I think that this is an excellent I’m torn on what to say here。 First, to give some context on why I read this graphic novel, ever since a friend of mine wanted badly to buy The Sandman series, I was interested on reading it。 It took me several years to start because I wanted to buy all the series at once, without knowing much about what was about。 So, instead, I decided this year to buy the Kindle version of the first volume to make sure I liked it before continuing with the rest。 On one hand, I think that this is an excellent executed graphic novel。 Great illustrations, dynamic between characters and stories。 On the other hand, there’s a lot of explicit adult and horror content, and maybe I’m not into that kind of content yet。 So, that’s why I rated it with a 4, I can’t deny the great work in it, but not really my thing。 With that being said, I’m not excluding the possibility of reading the rest of the volumes in the future。 。。。more

Reread this for one of my book clubs。 I think it was the third or fourth time。 24 Hours is still one of the best single issues of a comic that I've read。The storytelling here is a bit wonky at times and maybe Gaiman goes for shock value a bit too much at times, but all in all, I love this。 It's something I grew up with, so I can't be very neutral about it。 Reread this for one of my book clubs。 I think it was the third or fourth time。 24 Hours is still one of the best single issues of a comic that I've read。The storytelling here is a bit wonky at times and maybe Gaiman goes for shock value a bit too much at times, but all in all, I love this。 It's something I grew up with, so I can't be very neutral about it。 。。。more

Truly has the manic energy of a young writer throwing absolutely everything but the kitchen sink into the mix。 I am most surprised that it actually works。 Such incredible images and ludicrously ambitious ideas in here, looking forward to reading the rest。

I feel like this first volume has good bones, but is a bit of a mess。 But the last couple issues, and especially the introduction of Death, were interesting and fun and made me want to read more。 Excited to check out the rest of the stories。

I have no clue where to start or where to go with this review, besides the fact that Preludes & Nocturnes has put me into so many moments of awe that putting this at anything below a 10/10 feels like blasphemy to me。 The protagonist, Morpheus, is a god called Dream who was imprisoned for 72 years。 This graphic novel oversees the consequences of that。 Morpheus as a protagonist is compelling, the stakes of his journey are set very well, and reading from his perspective is incredibly interesting。 H I have no clue where to start or where to go with this review, besides the fact that Preludes & Nocturnes has put me into so many moments of awe that putting this at anything below a 10/10 feels like blasphemy to me。 The protagonist, Morpheus, is a god called Dream who was imprisoned for 72 years。 This graphic novel oversees the consequences of that。 Morpheus as a protagonist is compelling, the stakes of his journey are set very well, and reading from his perspective is incredibly interesting。 However, where Preludes & Nocturnes shines are all the other characters, especially John Dee a。k。a。 Doctor Destiny。 P&N showcases people ranging from selfishly morbid, twisted, all the way to downright unhinged, and I loved every single moment。 Watching the other characters develop and react to the events that happen in the book gripped me, to a level where I can remember every arc in this book, which can't be said for many graphic novels。This is a must-read for both people who enjoy graphic novels and comics already, and for those who doubt their validity as an art form。 This is some of the best fiction I have read, period。 。。。more

Watchmen。 The Dark Knight Returns。 The Sandman。 The trifecta of comics that brought the medium out of the Bronze Age and onto the path that has today lead to comics being a respected art form。 Of the three, The Sandman is second by just a bit to TDKR in fame。 I finally decided to give this comic a go, and while Preludes and Nocturnes might not wow to Watchmen or TDKR levels, it's still a fascinating start on what's hopefully is a fascinating journeyPreludes and Nocturnes collects issues #1-#8 of Watchmen。 The Dark Knight Returns。 The Sandman。 The trifecta of comics that brought the medium out of the Bronze Age and onto the path that has today lead to comics being a respected art form。 Of the three, The Sandman is second by just a bit to TDKR in fame。 I finally decided to give this comic a go, and while Preludes and Nocturnes might not wow to Watchmen or TDKR levels, it's still a fascinating start on what's hopefully is a fascinating journeyPreludes and Nocturnes collects issues #1-#8 of The Sandman, telling a pretty self-contained story。 A group of occultists try to summon and imprison Death, but they get Morpheus, King of Dreams instead。 70 years later, Dream secures his freedom and must now go on a quest to regain his tools, and with them, his powersAs an introduction to The Sandman and its universe, Preludes and Nocturnes is a really enjoyable read。 Neil Gaiman's imagination is one of the richest and most fertile in the business and it's out in full force even in this first volume。 However, it isn't until the last few issues of the trade that you really start to see the things that made The Sandman such a tour de force and game-changer in comics, and those issues will give you more than enough reason to rush out to your bookstore and order the next (nine?) volumes。 That's not to say that the road to those issues is boring or anything, this is just all around a great comic to read (that being said, if Neil Gaiman's style doesn't appeal to you, you may have a bit of a tough time with this one)A comic like this needs some of the best art in the game and it is present in spades here。 I have to say, sometimes in Gaiman's novels, I get the feeling that his imagination exceeds the capabilities of my mind's eye, and so I can see that Gaiman's scripts must have really taxed the artists on this book, but boy do they rise to the challenge。 This is one of the most gorgeous looking books ever drawn in the history of the industryI'm sure no one was waiting to hear from Fahad Ahmed if they should read The Sandman, but allow me to add my voice to the choir anyway。 DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS SERIES 。。。more

Interesting character to read about。 Solid first volume but I had very high expectations。 Morpheus spent the first half of the volume tracking down his objects of power and then the last few issues battling Doctor Destiny。 Curious where the series goes

Ygor Veríssimo

The first half of the book feels a bit exploratory, which is understandable since Gaiman was still practicing where he wanted to get with the character。 The last half is great, good story, great characters and horror。
