Summary

The wickedly funny first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that inspired the original hit CW show and the new series coming to HBO Max's Spring 2020 launch season (alongside hit series such as Pretty Little Liars and Friends)。

Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep--sometimes with each other。

S is back from boarding school, and if we aren't careful, she's going to win over our teachers, wear that dress we couldn't fit into, steal our boyfriends' hearts, and basically ruin our lives in a major way。 I'll be watching closely。。。

You know you love me。

The writing is。。。 not good。 I will appreciate this book for inspiring the characters that made the deliciously dramatic tv show, but nothing more。 I have no plans to continue the series。 If I want a dose of trashy teen drama, I'll still to PLL 😅 The writing is。。。 not good。 I will appreciate this book for inspiring the characters that made the deliciously dramatic tv show, but nothing more。 I have no plans to continue the series。 If I want a dose of trashy teen drama, I'll still to PLL 😅 。。。more

This book was good

Trashy, fun reading, nothing important。 I never imagined when I read it that this would become a very famous TV show。

Abbey

Good, silly, juvenile fun。

I thought this was a fun little read。 I'm now interested in the story more than I was when I started and some of the character developments have been good。 I have not seen the show, so it makes it even better。 I thought this was a fun little read。 I'm now interested in the story more than I was when I started and some of the character developments have been good。 I have not seen the show, so it makes it even better。 。。。more

3。5/5Re-read for nostalgia sake。

Helen James

Not like the show so it was a bit confusing

Maddy Mc

Very trashy, not much substance, but so much fun to read and kind of different from the tv show surprisingly

Love everything about this book (and their tv show adaptation)。

Having recently binged the Gossip Girl series on HBO Max, I just HAD to read the book for myself。 Well, at least the first book (I have a few more on deck)。 The book was very fast paced, and fun to read。The first thing I noticed was how different the book was from the series。 Characters were in the book that were never in the series (ie: Chuck's mom) and some characters had different roles (ie: Erik was Serena's older brother in the book, but younger brother in the series)。 The book was lacking Having recently binged the Gossip Girl series on HBO Max, I just HAD to read the book for myself。 Well, at least the first book (I have a few more on deck)。 The book was very fast paced, and fun to read。The first thing I noticed was how different the book was from the series。 Characters were in the book that were never in the series (ie: Chuck's mom) and some characters had different roles (ie: Erik was Serena's older brother in the book, but younger brother in the series)。 The book was lacking in character development, but because I had the series, I didn't have trouble picturing any of them。 It may have been a down side to watching the show before reading any of the books, but it was still a fun experience for me。 The books were definitely written for a younger audience, but if you're looking for a quick, fun read--I would recommend Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar。I do plan to read more of the series, but I have no immediate need to rush into the next book。 I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars。 。。。more

Found the first five books in the series for 50 cents each at a local used bookstore。 My mom wouldn’t let me read them when I was a teenager so I thought, what better way to kick off spring break than with a trashy teen novel。 I was not prepared for how problematic these books would be。 Lots of really questionable behavior from all of the “cool kid” protagonists。 One of the kids is basically a serial sexual assaulter and they all put up with it because he’s “part of their crowd。” Wild。

The TV show is better。

While the TV series is fun in a trashy fluffy way, this book was fun in a dark satirical way。 I prefer the tone of the book and appreciate that the subject matter was not watered down for its younger audience。

this book was not it for me :/ i loved the tv show but this book was so different。 the characters are nothing like they are in the show。 nate cries every other page? dan is this crazy obsessive smoker dude? it was just not for me i guess?

2。2*I enjoy watching the show so I decided to read the book。 This book is quite short and felt like there wasn’t any plot development。 The characters are under developed and you don’t really feel any connection to them。 “Gossip Girl” doesn’t play a role in the books and feels like a recap of what has happened。 But would I continue the series? Lmao yes。。。 I love trashy teen fiction。

The most vapid thing I’ve ever read and took me forever to get through because of the cringe but for some reason I want to continue。。。

While this varies greatly from its adaptation that is one of my favorite shows despite its problematic-ness they are essentially the same, in one thing the actions of the characters are not seen as right。 It's not raising their actions too great but the over the top lives they live。 The book is very 2000's, and I was one when this came out, there's lots of fatshamming, slutshaming and the use of gay as an insult。 It's not high art and that's not the goal there's a reason people like the show and While this varies greatly from its adaptation that is one of my favorite shows despite its problematic-ness they are essentially the same, in one thing the actions of the characters are not seen as right。 It's not raising their actions too great but the over the top lives they live。 The book is very 2000's, and I was one when this came out, there's lots of fatshamming, slutshaming and the use of gay as an insult。 It's not high art and that's not the goal there's a reason people like the show and it's the over-the-top and self-indulgent and with all it's problematic things low-key。 。。。more

This belongs into the category „sorry not sorry“ 🤷‍♀️

Definitely not the same as the tv show which threw me off a teeny bit, yet I still loved it。 I loved the writing style, and the different perspectives being written about, of course the gossip girl columns as well are amazing!

These books have aged like milk。 I am not enjoying them。 However, I have now finished two of them in one day。 I can’t stop。 That’s gotta count for something。

reread after about 15 years。。。 time really has flown past this series, wow。as a kid i would have given this 5 stars and entertainment wise still might butwhat。 the。 fuck。 why does this book use ’r*pe’ as a synonym for having sex? why does everyone think chuck is a bad boy when he’s a sexual predator??? i’m so glad this shit wouldn’t do today, things change after all。 i remember as a kid thinking chuck is annoying little shit but obviously i had no vocabulary for his predator tendencies。 he’s con reread after about 15 years。。。 time really has flown past this series, wow。as a kid i would have given this 5 stars and entertainment wise still might butwhat。 the。 fuck。 why does this book use ’r*pe’ as a synonym for having sex? why does everyone think chuck is a bad boy when he’s a sexual predator??? i’m so glad this shit wouldn’t do today, things change after all。 i remember as a kid thinking chuck is annoying little shit but obviously i had no vocabulary for his predator tendencies。 he’s considered ’a loser’ but only cos he can’t seem to get laid, not because he literally tries to r*pe two girls and it is only the first in the series of like 14 books。 and he’s not the only one, cyrus rose anyone? also the blatant comments on women’s weight and all is a no from me。i kinda can’t believe a new audiobook version has been made in 2020 and all this was kept in。 idk how they could have omitted these aspects but still was it necessary to remake a series like this? i’m torn cos this really was my favourite series younger and now i both feel like coming home to these characters and disgusted at a lot in this book and probably in the ones to come too。 。。。more

jdhsjdhsj so i read this on a clunky desktop computer when i was 10。 i wasn't allowed to watch the show so i surreptitiously named the pdf file "science textbook。" worked like a charm。 this book was my little secret, hid in a russian doll of empty folders。 it defined my prepubescence and scarred my conception of sex forever。 i shall always think of the phrase "parting my red sea" every time i go at it。 thank u cecily von ziegesar 。 jdhsjdhsj so i read this on a clunky desktop computer when i was 10。 i wasn't allowed to watch the show so i surreptitiously named the pdf file "science textbook。" worked like a charm。 this book was my little secret, hid in a russian doll of empty folders。 it defined my prepubescence and scarred my conception of sex forever。 i shall always think of the phrase "parting my red sea" every time i go at it。 thank u cecily von ziegesar 。 。。。more

And to be more popular than than the stunning Serena, oh, how can I forget how she said and a quote: "I'm going to burn so much calories having an hour sex" WTF? GIRL! It's your first time, you should know better than literally one hour is one hour doing it, the really action, you don't know if you want to because you've never experienced it, and what if your body just you know can't? And also you have to think about the other person how about he doesn't want to? Oh, she really did a CD to have sex 🤮Serena: Weird character sometimes she seems really relatable but then she starts to think like I'm the best, I'm gonna do whatever the fuck I want and I don't care who I might hurt, what? Oh, I don't know if you know but also she's sort of a Greek goddessPoor writing, this whole book is pointless, the only good thing was the final scene, I really hated how at the end of the chapter just for no reason they said "you know you love me" it's just SO annoying the most boring parts where the e-mails I really just couldn't I really have no idea what's the point, was like three hours but I really suffered 。。。more

Trashy and melodramatic, obviously, and it should have been fun。 But the framing device of the society tattletale just doesn’t work, and having nobody to root for made it tedious—they’re all losers under the veneer of glamor。 (And that veneer is paper-thin。 Seriously, there is a weirdly high number of mentions of bodily functions。)It’s all very early 2000s—lots of cigarettes, few cell phones, and a vastly different style of gossip-spreading than you’d get in something more recent。 Genuinely cann Trashy and melodramatic, obviously, and it should have been fun。 But the framing device of the society tattletale just doesn’t work, and having nobody to root for made it tedious—they’re all losers under the veneer of glamor。 (And that veneer is paper-thin。 Seriously, there is a weirdly high number of mentions of bodily functions。)It’s all very early 2000s—lots of cigarettes, few cell phones, and a vastly different style of gossip-spreading than you’d get in something more recent。 Genuinely cannot tell if elements of this are satirical or not。 It has an air of aspirational fantasy that’s outdated these days, but it’s hard to imagine that some of this wasn’t ridiculous or pretentious even then。 I expected a whirlwind of parties, fashion, drugs, and scandal, and there is a bit of that, but there’s a fair amount of emphasis put on the fact that it’s a small social set doing all of this。 It’s a pretty limited cast, because there are only so many students at these two schools that fit the criteria for the beautiful, careless elite。 I’m pretty sure it’s all told through Gossip Girl’s lens, though—it took me a while to spot it, since it’s so clumsily handled, but Gossip Girl seems to be the narrator。 I was very surprised at how poorly handled the actual Gossip Girl site was。 What’s the point of that type of framing device if the blog isn’t going to be a point of contention? Nobody even talked about it。 The writing was bad, too。 The insider reporting conceit didn’t match up at all with the tabloid rumors and dumb crowdsourced gossip。 The whole thing felt very out of place。 Where’s the “who is Gossip Girl” drama? There was also the unpleasant surprise of sexual assault and a bunch of creepy older guys。 Gross。 Quit talking about this fifteen-year-old girl’s boobs。 Jeez。Two stars for reasonably consistent characterization and very little else。 No plot, just slice of life, mediocre writing, and sheer tedium。 This book felt longer than it is。 It’s not one-star levels of bad, but it doesn’t deserve any more than two。 。。。more
