Summary

Maia D’Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, “Atlantis”—a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva—having been told that their beloved father, who adopted them all as babies, has died。 Each of them is handed a tantalizing clue to her true heritage—a clue which takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil。 Once there, she begins to put together the pieces of her story and its beginnings。

Eighty years earlier in Rio’s Belle Epoque of the 1920s, Izabela Bonifacio’s father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into the aristocracy。 Meanwhile, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is devising plans for an enormous statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision。 Izabela—passionate and longing to see the world—convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married。 There, at Paul Landowski’s studio and in the heady, vibrant cafes of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again。

In this sweeping, epic tale of love and loss—the first in a unique, spellbinding series of seven novels—Lucinda Riley showcases her storytelling talent like never before。

Not my normal sort of book but an easy read and enjoyable。

The Seven Sisters is a historical romance。 Despite the title it is a series of books (This being the first book) about adopted sisters, each book is about a different sisters story。This book is about the oldest sister, Maia, all the sisters were adopted as babies and we see that when their rich father "Pa Salt" passes away。 The girls are all left a letters with secret clues from their past, who and whereo they come from。I found it a little predictable at times and I think this is why it didn't h The Seven Sisters is a historical romance。 Despite the title it is a series of books (This being the first book) about adopted sisters, each book is about a different sisters story。This book is about the oldest sister, Maia, all the sisters were adopted as babies and we see that when their rich father "Pa Salt" passes away。 The girls are all left a letters with secret clues from their past, who and whereo they come from。I found it a little predictable at times and I think this is why it didn't hold my attention。 The trouble I had with this book is that it flips between now and years gone by and it travels across many country's。。 Also I believe there are too many unanswered questions, for example I wanted to find out more about the sister father and why did he adopt so many girls?I would like to thank Netgallery and the publishers of the book for my copy of this book for a honest review。 。。。more

I loved this book from start to finish and I was educated along the way。 This is the first in a series and I can’t wait to read on。 Not only has my TBR list got bigger but also my bucket list of places to go。 I highly recommend this but with a warning - you will want to read on!Thanks to Lucinda and Pigeonhole for the chance to read this。

I fell behind on my Pigeonhole reading because of a hospital dash, and, inevitably this was one of the books I let go。There was a competition for entry to this readalong。 I have no recollection of entering it, and it’s really not my kind of book - neither crime nor literary fiction, which are the genres I read most often。 It’s not even fantasy - which I dip into sometimes - although there are strong elements of fairytale within it。 So, I don’t know when or how I signed up to read this book, but I fell behind on my Pigeonhole reading because of a hospital dash, and, inevitably this was one of the books I let go。There was a competition for entry to this readalong。 I have no recollection of entering it, and it’s really not my kind of book - neither crime nor literary fiction, which are the genres I read most often。 It’s not even fantasy - which I dip into sometimes - although there are strong elements of fairytale within it。 So, I don’t know when or how I signed up to read this book, but I must have done 🤷🏻‍♀️The opening was fine - an unbelievable set-up, with a wealthy single man having gone round the world adopting baby girls and calling them after the stars in a particular constellation (The Seven Sisters of the book’s title)。 However, later on we are told that each of the sisters is expected to trace her roots, and from that point onwards we are taken on a journey with one of them to an overly-romanticised Italy-of-the-heavily-stereotyped past。 I’ll be honest, I only persisted to the end of the book because I was aware of having a limited place to read it。 It was really not my kind of book at all。 I managed to stop counting the glaring historical inaccuracies, because I understand that this type of novel is not about the details but the mood - it’s a fairytale with a pseudo-historical setting rather than a work of historical fiction。 And I have to say, if that’s your preferred genre, you will undoubtedly love this book。 It’s a masterpiece of its kind。 I’m only sorry that because that type of book is like nails on a blackboard for me, the best I can do is appreciate why it’s such a good examplar。 I can’t love it。 So three stars from me for doing what it set out to do, and doing so with aplomb, and apologies for being the wrong sort of reviewer for this work。 。。。more

The idea of the book is fantastic, six sisters named after a constellation all adopted。 None of them know where they came from, and when their father dies he gives each of them a clue - the coordinates of somewhere from their past and a quote written in Greek that should mean something to each of them。This book follows the eldest sister Maia and her journey to find out who she is and where she came from。 Her journey takes her to Brazil where she finds out who her real family are。 A lot of the bo The idea of the book is fantastic, six sisters named after a constellation all adopted。 None of them know where they came from, and when their father dies he gives each of them a clue - the coordinates of somewhere from their past and a quote written in Greek that should mean something to each of them。This book follows the eldest sister Maia and her journey to find out who she is and where she came from。 Her journey takes her to Brazil where she finds out who her real family are。 A lot of the book focuses on her maternal great grandmother, her marriage and Christ the Redeemer being constructed。 I found it quite disappointing that most of the book seemed to focus on her story and not Maia’s story, and that the part about Maia’s birth mother was quite rushed。 The story about her great grandmother, Izabela, was interesting but could have been condensed quite a lot and didn’t need to be as long as it was。I also found the writing quite clunky and it didn’t flow correctly in some parts, a bit like it had been translated from a different language and incorrectly。 It was fascinating learning about the construction of Christ the Redeemer and about Rio as it has always been on my bucket list of places to travel, but I felt that the book didn’t need to be quite as long as it was。 I am torn about whether I want to read on the rest of the books in the series, as I want to know what happens to the sisters and there are still some unanswered questions, but I don’t know if I could continue if the writing style doesn’t flow correctly still。 。。。more

The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley is the first book in a series。 The rich 'Pa Salt' who has six adopted adult daughters, mystifyingly added to his single-parent family under circumstances that he never explained to each of them, has died。 Mysteriously, his body has been dropped into the sea in a lead-lined coffin, leaving his grief-stricken daughters who gather at their opulent Swiss lakeside home with no real closure。 They are left, however, with trust funds, the locations of their births, a l The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley is the first book in a series。 The rich 'Pa Salt' who has six adopted adult daughters, mystifyingly added to his single-parent family under circumstances that he never explained to each of them, has died。 Mysteriously, his body has been dropped into the sea in a lead-lined coffin, leaving his grief-stricken daughters who gather at their opulent Swiss lakeside home with no real closure。 They are left, however, with trust funds, the locations of their births, a letter to each from their father and a clue to their identity if they wish to follow it up。 Maia, D’Aplièse, the eldest sister begins her search by travelling to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil。This story for me has everything; it is engaging, atmospheric, romantic and intriguing, the setting is beautifully described, and the historical elements, the making of the Christo, is educational and highly entertaining。 The romance is depicted delightfully and realistically in a way that manages to be both heartwarming and heart-aching。 The characters are multidimensional and loveable。 The Seven Sisters is a satisfying and rewarding reading experience from beginning to end and I can't wait to make a start on the next in the series, The Storm Sister which follows another sister, Ally D'Aplièse。I read The Seven Sisters in staves with other Pigeonholers as part of a group。 A special thank you to Lucinda Riley and The Pigeonhole for a complimentary copy of this novel at my request。 This review is my unbiased opinion。 。。。more

The first in the Seven Sisters series, loosely based on the Greek myth of the Pleiades and their constellations。 Six adopted sisters are brought up in a castle called ‘Atlantis’ on the shores of Lake Geneva。 When their father, affectionately known as Pa Salt, dies, he leaves each sister clues to their true heritage which takes each one on a journey。 This first book is about Maia and her clue takes her across the world to delve into the life of her great grandmother, Izabela Bonifacio, in Rio de The first in the Seven Sisters series, loosely based on the Greek myth of the Pleiades and their constellations。 Six adopted sisters are brought up in a castle called ‘Atlantis’ on the shores of Lake Geneva。 When their father, affectionately known as Pa Salt, dies, he leaves each sister clues to their true heritage which takes each one on a journey。 This first book is about Maia and her clue takes her across the world to delve into the life of her great grandmother, Izabela Bonifacio, in Rio de Janiero。I thoroughly enjoyed this dual timeframe story and was completely immersed in the characters’ lives。 I found both timelines equally as engrossing but I did love the history behind the building of the famous monument, Christ the Redeemer。 Historical fact and fiction are blended beautifully。 The descriptions of Geneva and Rio are very vivid, it made me want to visit both places。 Neither Maia’s or Bel’s journeys are always happy ones。 There are trials and tribulations along the way。 However, I’m glad that Maia found herself in the end and am hoping she will pop up again in subsequent books! A wonderfully engaging and absorbing read and I’m looking forward to reading The Storm Sister, the second book in the series which is about Alcyone or ‘Ally’ the next oldest sister。 Double thumbs up from me! 。。。more

I think this novel suffers from being the first in a series。 A lot of mysteries remain unsolved at the end, leaving threads that can be picked up further in the series。 At the start it reminded me of the "Ballet Shoes" series of children's books。 There are a set of children adopted by a kindly man。 They have very different talents and personalities。 As adults they are drawn back to their luxurious island home after a mysterious death, and are each given clues to learn about their origins。 In thi I think this novel suffers from being the first in a series。 A lot of mysteries remain unsolved at the end, leaving threads that can be picked up further in the series。 At the start it reminded me of the "Ballet Shoes" series of children's books。 There are a set of children adopted by a kindly man。 They have very different talents and personalities。 As adults they are drawn back to their luxurious island home after a mysterious death, and are each given clues to learn about their origins。 In this first book we follow Maia, the eldest sister。 I found some of the writing rather clunky, as if it were a poor translation - ironic, since the heroine works as a translator! I am sure that as the series goes on these problems will disappear, but I am not interested in reading more。I expect readers who enjoy following a series of books (and have greater reading stamina to reach the end and learn all the answers) will enjoy it more than I did。 。。。more
