Summary

Good stand alone thriller but ends abruptly

551 pages long and I could have easily indulged myself in another 500。 Jo Nesbø is one of my favorite authors - whether I am reading his series or a standalone such as 'The Kingdom' or 'The Knife' - his books always keep my me glued to the pages, dreading getting closer to the conclusion and having to wait it out for his next masterpiece。The ending was not what I was expecting at all - which made the whole experience of this novel that much more satisfying and exciting。 551 pages long and I could have easily indulged myself in another 500。 Jo Nesbø is one of my favorite authors - whether I am reading his series or a standalone such as 'The Kingdom' or 'The Knife' - his books always keep my me glued to the pages, dreading getting closer to the conclusion and having to wait it out for his next masterpiece。The ending was not what I was expecting at all - which made the whole experience of this novel that much more satisfying and exciting。 。。。more

A dark thriller that centres on two brothers with land where one of them wants to build a hotel。 There were deaths aplenty and an ending that leaves their fate open。

This was my first book by Nesbø at the recommendation of a friend。 I got to admit that it's size was scary and the hardcover edition looks even more intimidating。 I put it off for quite a while even after I got it to read on Kindle。 The story is a slow cooker, but what the author said in 549 pages could have been said in 300-350 at most。 Some chapters were fillers, just random thoughts of the main character。 I suppose it was to increase the suspense or to distract the reader with other details w This was my first book by Nesbø at the recommendation of a friend。 I got to admit that it's size was scary and the hardcover edition looks even more intimidating。 I put it off for quite a while even after I got it to read on Kindle。 The story is a slow cooker, but what the author said in 549 pages could have been said in 300-350 at most。 Some chapters were fillers, just random thoughts of the main character。 I suppose it was to increase the suspense or to distract the reader with other details while in the background big things are happening。 Like an avalanche you know it's possible to happen, but you do not expect it to come at all。 I'm giving it 3 stars just because of its length and some bits & bobs that were left uncovered, and the ending。 But story has a purpose just the clothes are too big, the characters development is more like uncovering rather than growing up & out。 If you like slow cooker books, this is your jam then。 。。。more

Not Nesbo’s best work, but captivating, macabre story。 Found Shannon and Carl to be not relatable and “real” characters。 Probably the last Jo Nesbo book I’ll read for a while。

Enjoyable read。 Well thought out。 Interesting plot turns。

You know when a book grabs you and doesn't let go, when the plot or characters steal your breath。 Both plot and characters did that for me with this book。 God, I loved it。When Roy and Carl's parents die suddenly, Roy takes on the role of protector of his younger brother。 When older, Carl leaves the sleepy village and Roy behind to make his fortune。 Years later, he returns with his new wife and plans to build a hotel on the brother's land。 He intends to make not only them, but the whole village r You know when a book grabs you and doesn't let go, when the plot or characters steal your breath。 Both plot and characters did that for me with this book。 God, I loved it。When Roy and Carl's parents die suddenly, Roy takes on the role of protector of his younger brother。 When older, Carl leaves the sleepy village and Roy behind to make his fortune。 Years later, he returns with his new wife and plans to build a hotel on the brother's land。 He intends to make not only them, but the whole village rich。 But Carl's return triggers events from the past that threaten to derail Roy and his quiet life。The story is told from first person POV, Roy。 He was such a brilliant character, very vivid and through him, all the other characters and setting come alive。 Slow to start maybe, but the story builds and builds to a thrilling end。 Jo Nesbo is a master at layering plot with subtle hints to draw you in the wrong direction。 A long book apparently, I enjoyed it so much I never noticed。Beautifully written, I didn't want it to end。 。。。more

Closer to 4 stars, because I’m still thinking about it。

This is what Jo Nesbo can write about brothers。 Deep, dark, sometimes ugly, but supporting, step-in-step and always together。 Amazing book

Myrto Pirli

Ωραίο βιβλίο, αλλά σκοτεινό。

Fancy

Like 2 books joined in the middle。 Preferred the first, more claustrophobic, more insular half。 By the time the final tragedy hit, it felt like everyone (including me) was emotionally numb。 Excellent writing to make Roy sympathetic。

A captivating psychological story that draws the reader into the story of two brothers who are traumatized by events in their childhood who end up scheming together to cover up crimes committed individually。 The amazing part of reading this book for me was that somehow I managed to still like the main character even though he plotted and committed atrocious acts to save himself and his brother。

Michael

Tough startBut so wonderfully written I’m glad I stuck with it。 But, I still want to read another Harry Hole, soon!

Quick, make this mountain of misery a two-star before I change my mind again and reduce it further (while writing this, I've already reduced it by one)。 An efficiently written but -- by two-thirds of the way through -- tediously plotted series of murders etc。 to prop up a fraught fictitious relationship between two brothers。 And they get away with it。。。。 Quick, make this mountain of misery a two-star before I change my mind again and reduce it further (while writing this, I've already reduced it by one)。 An efficiently written but -- by two-thirds of the way through -- tediously plotted series of murders etc。 to prop up a fraught fictitious relationship between two brothers。 And they get away with it。。。。 。。。more

I like his Harry Hole books better, but a good story with a surprising twist。

More like 3 1/2 stars, but。。。5 stars for the writing and 5 stars for the translation。 Prefer the Harry Hole series to Nesbo’s stand alones and this 0ne was just too long and repetitious。 Groundhog Day of a novel with no earth shaking surprises。 That said, waiting for next Nesbo novel。

Terrible。 Great if you're interested in how petrol stations are run and like reading about a boring man who sporadically kills people, then goes back to his boring life。 Sorry - just really disliked it。 Terrible。 Great if you're interested in how petrol stations are run and like reading about a boring man who sporadically kills people, then goes back to his boring life。 Sorry - just really disliked it。 。。。more

Spoiler alert 。 。 。 Nesbo is here doing something akin to what Nabokov does in Lolita。 Hang with me。 He seems to have set himself a challenge to make the reader empathize with the narrator (after all, we see only his point of view, and there is something about being inside the head of an "I" that makes humans tend to sympathize), and then he keeps pushing and pushing until we are up to or past our breaking point of empathy and realize we have been tricked into backing the wrong horse。 This would Spoiler alert 。 。 。 Nesbo is here doing something akin to what Nabokov does in Lolita。 Hang with me。 He seems to have set himself a challenge to make the reader empathize with the narrator (after all, we see only his point of view, and there is something about being inside the head of an "I" that makes humans tend to sympathize), and then he keeps pushing and pushing until we are up to or past our breaking point of empathy and realize we have been tricked into backing the wrong horse。 This would have been a TOTALLY different book if all the same actions had taken place but it was narrated by, say, the sheriff。 I did cotton on to how depraved the narrator's brother was early on, because I have a brother who also got himself into jams that his bigger brothers then had to fight someone over。 It took me longer to realize that the narrator was a self-justifying murderer, and at that point the book became pretty painful to read。 I know Lolita is also painful for many people to read。 (Though in this case you can't, as Humbert claims, "trust a murderer for a fancy prose style。") It's up to you whether you think this is worth the pain。 I clearly admire it, but I did not enjoy it as much as murder mysteries where I am rooting for the presumptive good guy。 。。。more
