Summary

DO GODS TRULY EXIST? CAN YOU KNOW THE FUTURE? AND WHAT LIES BEYOND THE VEIL OF DEATH?

Winter blankets the land, and more than hope has died。 Barred by the tower of Avempartha, the western army cannot invade the Fhrey homeland。 So it must seek a way across the Nidwalden River before the fane obtains the secret of dragons。 As time runs out for both humanity and the mystic Suri, the only chance for the living rests with the dead。 Having made their fateful choice, can a handful of misfits do the impossible, or are they forever lost to an inescapable grave? As in Virgil's Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy, and Milton's Paradise Lost, the most epic tales transcend the world of the living。 It's time to see what lies in Elan's Age of Death。

From Michael J。 Sullivan, New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post bestselling author comes the second-to-last installment in the epic fantasy series The Legends of the First Empire。 These novels chronicle a pivotal point in Elan's history, when humans rise against the Fhrey, whom they once saw as gods。 Set three thousand years before the Riyria tales, Legends is a standalone fantasy series independent of all other Elan stories。 But if you have read the other books, Legends will reveal lies and unmask truths about historical figures。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Love these books and have no complaints about this one。。。but bruh。 How is the last book going to end with several characters being sucked down into a death pit portal to the underworld and then end the NEXT book with the same heros falling into an underworld double death pit。 I mean I kind of love it。 Its really funny when you think about it。

So far my favourite of the series。。。Why? All the books in the series had the intrigue, characters, deaths, wars and action, twists and mysteries needed。。。 But what I was needing was a quest! This book gives the most unusually adventure in fantasy I've read so far, a true quest in the afterlife! 7 people with one goal, and what seems to be ready enough turns into an adventure。Finally more of Malcolm is revealed, and in the real world Sullivan is successfully building the big finale。 So far my favourite of the series。。。Why? Whatever was derivative about MJS and his Legends of The First Empire series has flown out the window with "Age of Death。" Almost the entire book takes place in the Underworld and what an Underworld it is。 Once again, I am gratified to see what were minor characters in the first three books of the series get major plotlines。 In case you were wondering, "Age of Death" also ends with a cliffhanger, so make sure you have "Age of Empyre" around。 I checked out the last 3 books of the series together Whatever was derivative about MJS and his Legends of The First Empire series has flown out the window with "Age of Death。" Almost the entire book takes place in the Underworld and what an Underworld it is。 Once again, I am gratified to see what were minor characters in the first three books of the series get major plotlines。 In case you were wondering, "Age of Death" also ends with a cliffhanger, so make sure you have "Age of Empyre" around。 I checked out the last 3 books of the series together because of how fast I have been reading them。 And that's really why I give a 5 star rating: because I absolutely loved it and I will probably read it again in the future 。。。more

This series remains an enjoyable one for me, and although I look forward to the last installment, I must admit this book is a weak link。 The first half of the book was enjoyable and faster paced than the second half。 The group of folks who travel along in an underworld setting seem to get nowhere, fast。 Not much is wrapped up。

Seems like Michal J Sullivan run out of ideas。 The purpose is great as always but there is no substance。 I don't mind reading for the sake of reading。 This book remind me of books by Stephen King。 Great characters, great world building and no actual story。 I enjoyed reading it but I'm disappointed that those is another filter。 Seems like Michal J Sullivan run out of ideas。 The purpose is great as always but there is no substance。 I don't mind reading for the sake of reading。 This book remind me of books by Stephen King。 Great characters, great world building and no actual story。 I enjoyed reading it but I'm disappointed that those is another filter。 。。。more

This series keeps getting dumber and dumberNot much improvement from the last title。 At least this one starts with a weak excuse from the author for why one book's worth of content was stretched over the last three books of the series。The bloody thing even ends much like the book before it, with nothing much having changed, and the entire conflict still depends on unfathomable stupidity on every side。 To add salt to injury the author even breaks into some truly children's literature cliches。 This series keeps getting dumber and dumberNot much improvement from the last title。 At least this one starts with a weak excuse from the author for why one book's worth of content was stretched over the last three books of the series。The bloody thing even ends much like the book before it, with nothing much having changed, and the entire conflict still depends on unfathomable stupidity on every side。 To add salt to injury the author even breaks into some truly children's literature cliches。 。。。more

5 Rhune, a dwarf and an elf die and go to the afterlife。 Nope not a joke, that's what the book is about。 In addition Suri is a prisoner in the land of the elves who expect to learn from her how to summon a dragon。 And oh what an adventure they will have。 5 Rhune, a dwarf and an elf die and go to the afterlife。 Nope not a joke, that's what the book is about。 In addition Suri is a prisoner in the land of the elves who expect to learn from her how to summon a dragon。 And oh what an adventure they will have。 。。。more

Probably my least favourite of the series (as it goes on a tangent through the afterworld/death), but, it's still got good solid moments。 I like that we're learning a whole lot of backstory to the world in this, even though I also wanted to find out where the main plot was going and see what happens there。 There's a lot of characters we've enjoyed over the series involved in the afterworld plot, but I found it was a little bit padded for what I wanted, and some of it could have been better trimm Probably my least favourite of the series (as it goes on a tangent through the afterworld/death), but, it's still got good solid moments。 I like that we're learning a whole lot of backstory to the world in this, even though I also wanted to find out where the main plot was going and see what happens there。 There's a lot of characters we've enjoyed over the series involved in the afterworld plot, but I found it was a little bit padded for what I wanted, and some of it could have been better trimmed down IMO。 With that said, I think it's all interesting, it's just not as fast moving or exciting as I think the main plot of Elves Vs Fhrey is, (we'll presumably see the wrap up of this in the final book though and I'm looking forward to that) and I wonder if this would have worked well as a standalone rather than a part of the main series。。。 Another big cliffhanger ending here and I am planning to dive straight into the final book in the series to see what secrets will finally be revealed。 Who is Malcolm, what does he want, and who will be victorious。 Are dragons going to be a huge part of the next book (cover indicates maybe) and what sacrifices will be made for them? So many questions and I'm excited for answers。 3*s for this one。 。。。more

Interesting chapter, very much character based more than anything。 Theres a few action scenes but they never seemed that important really it was all about what the characters did。

Wanted to write something here just because I enjoyed this one less than the other five in the series。 Really, I think it comes down to the fact that the author wrote this and the sixth book together and had to split them because otherwise it would be too long。 I get it, but this one does feel like it treads water a little bit。 I do very much enjoy some aspects of the story, particularly the new setting that this one explores。。。 but at the same time the pacing dragged a bit for me compared to th Wanted to write something here just because I enjoyed this one less than the other five in the series。 Really, I think it comes down to the fact that the author wrote this and the sixth book together and had to split them because otherwise it would be too long。 I get it, but this one does feel like it treads water a little bit。 I do very much enjoy some aspects of the story, particularly the new setting that this one explores。。。 but at the same time the pacing dragged a bit for me compared to the others, and this one took me the longest to get through。 It's still a fun read, but comparatively weak to the others! 。。。more

I read this entire 400+ page book in one day, which I think speaks for itself。 There is SO much suspense in this book and yet another amazing cliffhanger at the end, I literally could not put it down。

I finished reading “Age of Death,” the fifth book in Michael J。 Sullivan's Legends of the First Empire series and, once again, Mr。 Sullivan has spun an enthralling tale。 The eight Rhunes (humans) who agreed to find and rescue the young mystic Suri are shocked to discover that to reach Suri, they will have to travel through Phyre, the underworld of their home world of Elan。 And to traverse Phyre, they have to be。。。 dead。 So they take a death plunge (literally) and become eight new shades。 They fi I finished reading “Age of Death,” the fifth book in Michael J。 Sullivan's Legends of the First Empire series and, once again, Mr。 Sullivan has spun an enthralling tale。 The eight Rhunes (humans) who agreed to find and rescue the young mystic Suri are shocked to discover that to reach Suri, they will have to travel through Phyre, the underworld of their home world of Elan。 And to traverse Phyre, they have to be。。。 dead。 So they take a death plunge (literally) and become eight new shades。 They first stop in the realm of Rel where they meet with deceased friends and family。 They then push on to the realm of Nifrel, an area of near-constant warfare and strife。 Here they encounter Ferrol, the goddess of the Fhrey (elves)。 Ferrol knows one of the party carries the key that allowed entry into Phyre and she wants it。 Badly。 Meanwhile, Suri is still a prisoner of the Fhrey and being pressured to reveal a terrible secret to Lothian, the Fhrey supreme leader。 A secret that may well prove to be a horrific game changer。。。 As usual, Mr。 Sullivan's sublime prose keeps you wondering and worrying about the characters' ultimate fates, fates that will be resolved in the final book of the series, “Age of Empyre。” 。。。more

3。5/5 I am still really enjoying this series however I wasn’t as entertained this time around。 I still love these characters and would read even more about them even if the quality slipped。 I just wasn’t as sold with the events of book 5 or 4 for that matter。 Usually Sullivan’s payouts are worthwhile though so I’m expecting big things for Age of Empyre the last book in the series。 The setting for book 5 is completely flipped on it head。 Most of the story takes place in the land of Pyre and invol 3。5/5 I am still really enjoying this series however I wasn’t as entertained this time around。 I still love these characters and would read even more about them even if the quality slipped。 I just wasn’t as sold with the events of book 5 or 4 for that matter。 Usually Sullivan’s payouts are worthwhile though so I’m expecting big things for Age of Empyre the last book in the series。 The setting for book 5 is completely flipped on it head。 Most of the story takes place in the land of Pyre and involves the oldest beings, heroes, and “gods” of the world of Elan。My favorite character Suri barely makes an appearance this time around and her struggles are pretty much left on the back burner。 She makes appearances but her side is really pretty minimal。 As is everyone else who is not off adventuring in Pyre。The writing is still top notch albeit missing a bit of the wit and banter that I’ve come to expect from the author。One of the things I’ve really enjoyed is the evolution of the character Tressa。 She has become another favorite and I’m still rooting for that bitch。So many threads are dangling at the end of “Death” but I’m eager to dive into the last book in the series and see how it all comes out。 。。。more

Age of Legend was great so the #2 book in the trilogy must hit some kind of sophmore curse, right? Wrong! This book really dragged on for me。 All sorts of digressions into the history of making the world that slowed the plot down a lot。 Not as captivating as some of the previous books in this series。

I think I would have enjoyed the references to the other series more if I had read them closer together。 I quite enjoyed this series but I can't say it hit the mark to become one of my favorites。 I wasn't totally invested in the characters and the end was a little abrupt。 Not sure I like it from a closer perspective。 I think I would have enjoyed the references to the other series more if I had read them closer together。 I quite enjoyed this series but I can't say it hit the mark to become one of my favorites。 I wasn't totally invested in the characters and the end was a little abrupt。 Not sure I like it from a closer perspective。 。。。more

For the first 4 books in the series I listened to the audiobooks (and narrator Tim Gerard Doyle is AMAZING)。 Due to COVID-19 my library system has had issues, only has the paper book, and I can't even request a book to be ordered。 So I read the paper version, which has the advantage of being able to go back and re-read key passages, as well as apparently Michael's wife Robin has written afterwords in all the paper books which I enjoyed a great deal。 As for the story itself, it's great, though no For the first 4 books in the series I listened to the audiobooks (and narrator Tim Gerard Doyle is AMAZING)。 Due to COVID-19 my library system has had issues, only has the paper book, and I can't even request a book to be ordered。 So I read the paper version, which has the advantage of being able to go back and re-read key passages, as well as apparently Michael's wife Robin has written afterwords in all the paper books which I enjoyed a great deal。 As for the story itself, it's great, though not my favorite in the series。 I found his interpretations of the afterlife particularly intriguing。 I'm looking forward to the finale to see how all the strands play out。 。。。more

I really like this author's work and have thoroughly enjoyed his output - until now。This really does feel like a filler book。 Slow and ponderous。But then again, the world-building, characterisation, and revelations all help mitigate against what many have found just too boring。For me, it's not his best volume, and I understand that the author is also aware that there was a lot of tension trying to make a three-volume tale as per his other story-arcs。Then again, I have read some really poor fanta I really like this author's work and have thoroughly enjoyed his output - until now。This really does feel like a filler book。 Slow and ponderous。But then again, the world-building, characterisation, and revelations all help mitigate against what many have found just too boring。For me, it's not his best volume, and I understand that the author is also aware that there was a lot of tension trying to make a three-volume tale as per his other story-arcs。Then again, I have read some really poor fantasy novels, so even though this is towards the bottom of his writing chops for me, it still gets 4 stars。I will still recommend the author to others but advise they start with the far superior Ryria novels。 。。。more
