Summary

I don’t write many reviews here, mostly out of laziness。 Move the book from “to-read” to “read”。 Done。 It has been quite some time since I’ve connected with a book like I have with this one。 I think it’s going to stick with me for a long while。

Wow。 This was strange and haunting and not at all what I expected。 I really enjoyed it。 It was beautifully written and a unique story。

3。5 ⭐A great book to read in a hospital, not as great to explain to a nurse。Loved Piranesi as a main character and though I usually dislike first person I quickly got used to it here。 Just wish the plot was less predictable or there were more things to unveil。 The statues were sexy。 Definitely half a star just for the statues。

I don't even know how to describe this book。 It starts out atmospheric and ethereal and then suddenly it turns into an adventure/escape/mystery and then it tries to become ethereal again but fails。 And honestly, that may all be deliberate。 There's a relaxed atmosphere to the beginning that really seduces you in and then suddenly everything is ruined and you can't get it back。I dunno。 Anyway I read it, I thought it was decent。 I don't even know how to describe this book。 It starts out atmospheric and ethereal and then suddenly it turns into an adventure/escape/mystery and then it tries to become ethereal again but fails。 And honestly, that may all be deliberate。 There's a relaxed atmosphere to the beginning that really seduces you in and then suddenly everything is ruined and you can't get it back。I dunno。 Anyway I read it, I thought it was decent。 。。。more

Atmospheric。 Suspenseful。 Character-driven。 Otherworldly。 Please don’t spoil yourself by reading detailed reviews。

I adored every word of this book。 Incredibly well written and an imaginative story。 Every Word。

I loved this book, but I can tell it's not for everyone。I finished it almost exactly 1 month ago and I'm still thinking about it。 This story really packed a punch for such a short book。I loved the first person-journal entry perspective。 It really worked for me。 It was thrilling to experience the themes and try to solve the mysteries of the "world" from Piranesi's perspective。 I felt discovery。 Respectfulness。 Curiosity。 Piranesi was a stark contrast to the "Other," who had none of these characte I loved this book, but I can tell it's not for everyone。I finished it almost exactly 1 month ago and I'm still thinking about it。 This story really packed a punch for such a short book。I loved the first person-journal entry perspective。 It really worked for me。 It was thrilling to experience the themes and try to solve the mysteries of the "world" from Piranesi's perspective。 I felt discovery。 Respectfulness。 Curiosity。 Piranesi was a stark contrast to the "Other," who had none of these characteristics。This is one of those books where plot isn't all that important。 The pacing is marvelous。 The reader gets to view the world little by little。 I love how so much of the book is open to interpretation。 I loved the atmosphere of the book。 The mystery of the world was interesting for the reader, but it was actually more interesting to see how our main character Piranesi attempts to put the pieces together。 The book was mysterious, but not really a mystery。This book was unlike any book I've read this year, in a good way!I had so many questions that are still unanswered a month after reading。 Is there significance to the 8 minotaurs in the first vestibule? What is the meaning of the moon room? Is the house more than how it's presented? **** potential spoilers *****There is something important that I couldn't unpack having to do with the influence of the mind on the world : that the "ancients" could bend nature to their will : and that the house is some sort of manifestation of this idea。 How do the statues as representations from the real world support this idea? Were the birds really communicating with Piranesi? What do the tides symbolize? What does it mean that Piranesi was a master of them? I couldn't quite make it all work in my head。 But, I dont think that this book is meant to be completely understood。 Nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience! 。。。more

This is a wonderful book。 It starts out dreamy and weird, it has an adventure in the middle, and pays off at the end in a touching way。

。。。more

I am not a huge fan of fantasy books so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book。 The writing is exceptional and it keeps you interested throughout the books。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Susanna Clarke is hardly what you would call a prolific author。 In fact, I think I've read both of her other books, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and The Ladies of Grace Adieu。 Jonathan Strange is one of my favourite books so I'm always keen to read something by Clarke。 Piranesi has been on my radar for a bit but recently it was on sale so I picked it up。Piranesi is quite a short book, clocking in at just under 250 pages (contrast with Jonathan Strange which runs over 1000), but it doesn't feel Susanna Clarke is hardly what you would call a prolific author。 In fact, I think I've read both of her other books, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and The Ladies of Grace Adieu。 Jonathan Strange is one of my favourite books so I'm always keen to read something by Clarke。 Piranesi has been on my radar for a bit but recently it was on sale so I picked it up。Piranesi is quite a short book, clocking in at just under 250 pages (contrast with Jonathan Strange which runs over 1000), but it doesn't feel like a short book。 Piranesi is set in a Labyrinthine mass of halls and corridors (reminds me a little of Gormenghast in that regard)。 These halls have a population of two: the eponymous Piranesi, whose journal entries form the narrative of the book, and the "other", a scholarly type who meets with Piranesi from time to time to study the halls。 I was initially not sure how I felt about it for the first 60 or so pages; the plot was rather unclear and there was a fair chunk of world building which didn't immediately seem relevant to the plot。 It takes a much more dramatic turn once it becomes clear that there is more going on behind the scenes。 Piranesi finds journal entries referring to places and events in our world, and also some evidence that Piranesi has been forgetting things。 For a book that has a cast of (initially) two, it has quite a solid amount of character for each of the characters。 Even those who appear only in journal entries feel well crafted。 The plot is also engaging, I enjoy a good mystery and the mystery presented in Piranesi gripped me once it was presented。 I won't spoil the twists。 I can see why Piranesi has received a fair bit of acclaim - it's well paced for a book that is as short as it is, and it has engaging characters and plot。 。。。more

I only just finished this a moment ago, and I need some time to really process all that!! But over all I really enjoyed this book。 Took a little while to get going but once it did I could not put it down。 I'm sure there are TONS of metaphors, or allegories that I'm not getting (I'm not the sharpest tack) but I still enjoyed the read。 I only just finished this a moment ago, and I need some time to really process all that!! Weird book。 Definitely one of the most interesting and unique books I’ve read。 It does take some time to get into it, as you start reading it and are mega confused, but it was worth reading, at least the first half。 It lost some of my interest in the second half, but the first part was amazing。

Unlike anything I've ever read before。 Reading this book was a whole journey。 The beginning confused the shit out of me and I suspect it was like that for a lot of people。 But it was like that on purpose。 The way the author manages to lead you through the story, slowly unravelling everything, is craftsmanship at its finest。 We figure things out with Piranesi and as things start unwinding, it gets incredibly interesting。 I feel like a lot of people might not like how slow the book is in the begin Unlike anything I've ever read before。 Reading this book was a whole journey。 The beginning confused the shit out of me and I suspect it was like that for a lot of people。 But it was like that on purpose。 The way the author manages to lead you through the story, slowly unravelling everything, is craftsmanship at its finest。 We figure things out with Piranesi and as things start unwinding, it gets incredibly interesting。 I feel like a lot of people might not like how slow the book is in the beginning and will be urged to put it down but a very big redeeming quality is how short it is。 It will not take too much of your time。 I finished it in two sittings。 It's a quick read and even the slower parts do not last long。 I actually found myself quite enjoying them。I will try not to spoil but I really liked the ending。 It felt bittersweet and yet warm。 It almost gave me the same feeling I got watching Midsommar the movie (in no way but strictly the feeling)。 Especially when things started coming out about the Other。 From the beginning I had my suspicions on that motherfucker。 But even just the way Piranesi talks about the house and the world, it's almost cult-y。 Everything about it is so unsettling but in the best way possible。 Highly entertaining, incredibly written。 。。。more

A beautifully written book! The reason I didn’t give this book five stars is because it is quite slow。 It takes getting through at least half of the book for things to pick up, and it’s not a thick book。 So that’s a bit disappointing。 I don’t think the story requires that much foundation, either。 Once things do speed up, it does become a bit of a page-turner。 I didn’t personally like the journaling method of narration, but it mostly works。 I really started to enjoy the book in the last 80 pages o A beautifully written book! The reason I didn’t give this book five stars is because it is quite slow。 It takes getting through at least half of the book for things to pick up, and it’s not a thick book。 So that’s a bit disappointing。 I don’t think the story requires that much foundation, either。 Once things do speed up, it does become a bit of a page-turner。 I didn’t personally like the journaling method of narration, but it mostly works。 I really started to enjoy the book in the last 80 pages or so。 The last two “entries” are beautifully written。 The story is very creative and imaginative。 Something that was difficult for me was that I had a hard time envisioning what everyone looked like。 But if I think about it, the descriptions are pretty vague in the House and very clear in the Other World。 Maybe that’s metaphorical? Obviously the author is capable of incredibly detailed descriptions, but chooses not to be so detailed sometimes。 I do recommend this book, if not for any reason other than to read something completely different。 To me, it’s a mix of sci-fi and mystery with a spiritual theme。 I’m sure you could read into it if you want, but it’s also fun just to read it as-is。 。。。more

This book end up being a bit different from what I imagined in a good way。Piranesi is a story about a man named Piranesi exploring a infinitely large house filled with statues and the ocean。 He is in awe of the beauty of the House, and want to understand it。 The story starts off feeling like a fantastical tale, yet the reader quickly detects that there is something suspicious about the House。 Little clues here and there seem to suggest there is a hidden truth somewhere。 The first third of the bo This book end up being a bit different from what I imagined in a good way。Piranesi is a story about a man named Piranesi exploring a infinitely large house filled with statues and the ocean。 He is in awe of the beauty of the House, and want to understand it。 The story starts off feeling like a fantastical tale, yet the reader quickly detects that there is something suspicious about the House。 Little clues here and there seem to suggest there is a hidden truth somewhere。 The first third of the book is imbued with a sense of mysterious beauty as the reader explores the unreal quality of the House。 It is the perfect combination of whimsicalness and suspense。At the 1/3 mark, majority of the truth about the House is revealed。 I was really looking forward to solving the mystery, so I was a bit disappointed but how quickly the “answer” and how I was able to piece together the rest of the event。 Still, the prose is so soothing and beautiful, and I am more than happy to see how Piranesi will react one with he realizes the truth。 The last third of the book made me realize the point of story is not about solving the mystery。 In fact, the mystery of the House is just the way to present the author’s message。 The suspense is what starts the story, but it is not the main message。 To me, the story is really a discussion about our identity, our choices, and how we find the inner peace that pushes us through our life。 The “magic” doesn’t end with the reveal of the truth and the answer to the mystery doesn’t denounce the value of the House。The ending left me with a sense of peace and wonder, and that is what I love about a book with a “soft magic system”。 It is worthy to note that this story will not layout a detailed and chronological explanation of what happened。 There will still be questions at the end(view spoiler)[ (for example, who is the dead young girl? Which one of the dead is which person? How exactly did they die? What exactly happens with Laurence and his students? Where did the “magic” go?) (hide spoiler)], but I am satisfied with how the story ends。 Sometimes, not revealing everything helps to create something that is bigger than all of us。 。。。more

A brilliant work of imagination, wonder, and innocence lost, then regained。 Only in our minds are we truly free and only when our minds connect with the magic that exists in our wondrous House, the Earth, do we feel genuine belonging。 Madness or wondrous isolation from the follies of modern life? Is this an allegory or the chronicle of a breakdown? The reader will decide: do you believe in a door in back of the wardrobe or not? I vote for the doors of perception。

It wasn't at all what I expected based on the premise, but I still liked it。 I feel like it has something to say about mental trauma or mental disorders or maybe just personal identity in general。 It also definitely makes you think of Plato's cave allegory thingy, like the idea that what we perceive is just a shadow of reality。 And maybe that can be good or bad。 It wasn't at all what I expected based on the premise, but I still liked it。 I feel like it has something to say about mental trauma or mental disorders or maybe just personal identity in general。 It also definitely makes you think of Plato's cave allegory thingy, like the idea that what we perceive is just a shadow of reality。 And maybe that can be good or bad。 。。。more
