Summary

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off meets Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist in this romp through the city that never sleeps from the New York Times bestselling author of Since You’ve Been Gone, Morgan Matson

Two girls。 One night。 Zero phones。

Kat and Stevie—best friends, theater kids, polar opposites—have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City。 They have it all planned out。 They’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best。 Night。 Ever。 What could go wrong?

Well。 Kind of a lot?

They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians。 Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theater, and unhelpful cab drivers。 But there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash, dry cleaning to deliver (don’t ask), and the world’s best museum to explore。

Over the course of a wild night in the city that never sleeps, both Kat and Stevie will get a wake-up call about their friendship, their choices…and finally discover what they really want for their future。

That is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight。

This book was so much fun! I was involved in theater in high school and grew up in the suburbs (Chicago) and this book immediately transported me back to my high school days。 I loved Kat and Stevie, and their friendship was very relatable。 I couldn't help but think of my high school best friend while I was reading this book。 I could totally picture us taking the train and sneaking off to Chicago for a night, although I doubt it would have been nearly as exciting! Take Me Home Tonight was a fun book about two best friends, Kat and Stevie, and their adventures one night in New York City。 I enjoyed how the story took place in many different places with the two meeting many different people。 Some parts of the story felt a little wild and unrealistic, but it was still fun to read about what would happen next。 While most of the book was fairly enjoyable, there was a side plot with Kat and Stevie's friend, Teri, that didn't fit well and didn't add anything to t Take Me Home Tonight was a fun book about two best friends, Kat and Stevie, and their adventures one night in New York City。 I enjoyed how the story took place in many different places with the two meeting many different people。 Some parts of the story felt a little wild and unrealistic, but it was still fun to read about what would happen next。 While most of the book was fairly enjoyable, there was a side plot with Kat and Stevie's friend, Teri, that didn't fit well and didn't add anything to the story。 I also found that I enjoyed reading about the minor characters more than Kat and Stevie。 Kat was a bit pushy and she wasn't a very good friend to Stevie, while Stevie was too much of a people-pleaser。 Both were also a little immature and weirdly stubborn about some of their decisions。 I liked reading parts involving Cary and Stevie's step-siblings, Matty, Margeaux, and Mallory。 For fans who follow Morgan Matson's novels, Amy Curry from Matson's debut novel, Amy & Roger's Epic Detour, is also a minor character。 I usually enjoy when characters from previous books make cameos, but I felt like this one left me with a lot of questions about Amy's story and distracted me from the rest of the novel。I've been enjoying reading Matson's books for over a decade, but I think I've finally outgrown her stories。 Take Me Home Tonight was a nice way to end it off。 (Unless Matson decides to write another book about Amy。)A copy of this book was provided by Simon & Schuster Canada through NetGalley。 。。。more

4。5 StarsThis book was so great! I have read a lot of contemporaries, but every time I pick up a Morgan Matson book, I am never disappointed, and Take Me Home Tonight is no exception! It had everything: humor, romance, hijinks, drama, and crime。 Sucks you right in, and keeps it coming until the end!The book starts off normal enough, with two friends, Stevie and Kat, awaiting the casting announcement for their Fall play, King Lear。 But, alas, the norm is disrupted when their Theater teacher says 4。5 StarsThis book was so great! It had everything: humor, romance, hijinks, drama, and crime。 Sucks you right in, and keeps it coming until the end!The book starts off normal enough, with two friends, Stevie and Kat, awaiting the casting announcement for their Fall play, King Lear。 But, alas, the norm is disrupted when their Theater teacher says he "needs more time" on it。 This sends panic through the group, but none more than Kat, who has played up this role as the most important thing for her Senior year。 And of course, she expects her best friend, Stevie, to feel the same。 But Stevie doesn't, and is focused on her own drama in the form of her Dad canceling on her for her 18th birthday dinner。 Typical high school drama, and Matson could've just kept it that way。 But nope, Kat and Stevie are off to magical New York City (being from Connecticut) to try and salvage both Stevie's birthday night and (secretly) Kat's chances at her "once-in-a-senior-year" role。 What could go wrong?Matson focuses on the relationship between Stevie and Kat in such a realistic and beautiful way。 My best friends in high school were my everything, and that is what Kat and Stevie have, as well。 But growing up sometimes means growing apart, and the girls realize this in a very inconvenient, stuck in NYC kind of way。 They have to fall apart to come back together, and the events that plague the girls (some good, some bad, and some outrageous) all add up to develop a deeper friendship than they had before。The supporting cast in this book is a delight, and if you're a Matson fan, you will see some returning characters from her previous books, so keep a sharp eye out for that。 Within these supporting roles, both Kat and Stevie have some really great friends and family, and Matson takes the opportunity to explore, albeit lightly, how love works romantically and familiarly。 But the love one has for their friends is the overarching focus, and each encounter leads, in a way, to Kat and Stevie's relationship。Now, all that makes this book sound very serious, and it is in some parts, but this is a plot filled with crazy, the kind that you always read about happening in NYC, but even more crazy (at least to me) then I think actually happens。 I loved it though; I think that the over-the-top escapades helped highlight the realistic, more grounded instances within the book。 Also, they were just so fun to read about。 And live yourself (I can't be the only person who dreams of the fantasy of NYC, no?)。Fast-paced, twisty, and turney - Kat and Stevie's adventure through one New York night will keep you entertained and glued to the page (oh and their friend Teri has some very crazy stuff happen to her that takes place simultaneously - all I'm going to say)。 Take Me Home Tonight by Morgan Matson is a real winner, and might just be one of my favorite of her books so far。 。。。more

Morgan Matson’s latest work takes readers on a wild ride through Manhattan and elsewhere。 Like Manhattan, the story is busy: it’s visual, constantly in motion。 The bustling scenes happen so quickly and move on to something new, something equally outrageous and entertaining。 Matson has given readers a modern slapstick comedy à la Bringing Up Baby with hilarious characters and witty dialogue that’s so smart and lots of fun。 The incongruous on the road scenes with Teri and the kids are just as extr Morgan Matson’s latest work takes readers on a wild ride through Manhattan and elsewhere。 Like Manhattan, the story is busy: it’s visual, constantly in motion。 The bustling scenes happen so quickly and move on to something new, something equally outrageous and entertaining。 Matson has given readers a modern slapstick comedy à la Bringing Up Baby with hilarious characters and witty dialogue that’s so smart and lots of fun。 The incongruous on the road scenes with Teri and the kids are just as extreme, if not more so。 Readers may wonder how on earth these wildly different storylines could possibly fit together。 But Matson makes it work through her careful, meticulously executed plot。 Matson also manages to weave in characters from her previous stories。 Readers are offered brief glimpses into the lives of Amy, Roger and Lucien from her debut novel, which will whet the appetites of readers who enjoy following her works。 Besides the romps, Matson provides readers with thoughtful insights into fallen idols, self-knowledge, family relationships and friendship。 This is an excellent work, and for readers like me, we’ll be on the lookout for whatever this talented writer produces next。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Morgan Matson that I heard about through my TLA conference。 This book is Adventures in Babysitting meets Serendipity meets High School Musical。 Having a senior and sophomore in high school very involved with the theater program, so much of this book rang true and it was a delight to read and make connections while reading it。 I loved the three story lines that were woven together and how you became so engrossed in one that you almost forgot about the others, esp I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Morgan Matson that I heard about through my TLA conference。 This book is Adventures in Babysitting meets Serendipity meets High School Musical。 Having a senior and sophomore in high school very involved with the theater program, so much of this book rang true and it was a delight to read and make connections while reading it。 I loved the three story lines that were woven together and how you became so engrossed in one that you almost forgot about the others, especially Teri, until the book switched gears with "meanwhile back in。。。" and you remembered that she was having her own issues。 I think this book is definitely geared toward a certain demographic but when that specific type of reader picks this up, they will love it from the beginning! 。。。more

I was excited when I saw that one of the reigning queens of YA contemporary had a new release coming out! So far I had read The Unexpected Everything and Save the Date by Morgan Matson, both of which I really enjoyed, and now I can add Take Me Home Tonight to the list of MM books I’ve read and loved。 (Side note: since I am of a certain age (ahem), I cannot pick up or think about this book without immediately singing “Take me home tonight, I don’t wanna let you go til you see the light” in my hea I was excited when I saw that one of the reigning queens of YA contemporary had a new release coming out! But first, Stevie and Kat have to make it through the night, try to find each other again, and see if they can get past their blowout。I would recommend Take Me Home Tonight to any fan of contemporary, and it will be of particular interest to readers who are/were drama kids themselves and those who love the hustle and bustle of NYC (I readily admit feeling anxious about their travails in the big city, ha!)。 I just really enjoy the way Morgan Matson tells a story, and how vibrant her characters are。 I’ve been so steeped in fantasy lately that it was nice to throw a standalone contemporary into the mix! I hope you’ll pick this one up。Rating: 4 stars!**Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher for purposes of this blog tour。 This review is voluntary on my part and reflects my honest rating and review of the book。 。。。more

I've heard wonderful things about this author their books, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this blog tour。 I liked that this story was about Kat and Stevie's friendship, and enjoyed seeing the two of them become closer friends by the end。 They had to take different paths, but both needed to learn certain truths about themselves。 There were just a few things that irked me about the book, which is why I didn't give it more stars。I think Kat was a crutch for Stevie and vice versa。 Stevie never wanted to feel like a burden, so she always said things were fine even when they weren't。 If Kat was around, she wouldn't let Stevie suffer in silence, and oftentimes forcefully took charge of a situation。 Stevie's coffee was made wrong? Stevie says it's fine, but Kat ignores her and has the barista remake the drink。 When Kat is obsessing over a casting or wanting to run lines for a play, Stevie indulges her instead of telling her she's being insane。 I completely understood Kat's dedication, but hated how consumed she was by one thing。 She didn't allow herself to have other hobbies or a life outside of theater。Of the two characters, I preferred Stevie。 Her problems were more relatable and she was easier to tolerate。 They both were incredibly frustrating characters, and it took the better part of the book for them to grow on me。 I think losing each other in the city was a much needed wakeup call for them both。 They may have initially jumped to the wrong conclusions, but their experiences helped bring certain aspects of their lives into perspective。 Unfortunately, I had to suspend my disbelief for this book to work。 Everything that happened was either too convenient or too unbelievable。 I can understand certain things happening unexpectedly (like running into someone you JUST met at a bodega later on)。 It wasn't likely to happen, but still possible。 However, there were a lot of these moments peppered in throughout the book。 Like what happened to Stevie after getting off the subway (super weird and not at all believable), or how they both kept running into people they knew in a city that was as unfamiliar as it was large。 The characters were confronted with coincidence after coincidence, and everything seemed to work out for the best。 I also hated Teri's storyline and wish it didn't exist。 We don't know enough about her as a character for her to have this strange subplot。 What happens to Teri is totally unexpected and hits you in the face like a foul ball off a broken bat。 It was as shocking as it was painful to read。 I cringed every time we flashed to what was happening with her while Kat and Stevie were off on their separate life-changing adventures。 It made absolutely no sense and wasn't even remotely realistic。 I would say more, but I don't want to spoil anything for those of you who want to read the book。I always struggle with books when I don't like the main character(s) or have trouble relating to them。 Kat and Stevie were interesting enough to read about, and I also think the author captured their ages and level of maturity really well, but there was something off-putting about them both。 They're still young and figuring themselves out, and I think that's what this book is really about。 Kat and Stevie have an authentic high school friendship, one that grows and changes over time。 They aren't the same people they were four years ago, but they're also not the same people they were yesterday。 They both say things to each other that cut deep, but that are also true and come from a place of love。 It's hard to hear sometimes, but I have hope for their friendship after the end of this book。 They've both learned so much about themselves in a single night, and hopefully that means certain changes will take place in the future。 I absolutely loved Cary and all of his various jobs! However, there's a REALLY BIG spoiler for Top Gun, if you haven't seen the movie。 I also liked Mateo (Matty) and thought his friends were funny。 I would've enjoyed seeing more of them。Did I absolutely love and swoon over this book? No。 Was it an authentic portrayal of teenagers lost in New York City? Eh。 Was it fun to read? Mostly。 I may not have liked Kat and Stevie, but I do think they are characters people will be able to relate to (especially people around their age)。 Additionally, the formatting for this book was weird, but you get used to it。 The random flashes to Teri (ugh), the fact that we only get Kat's perspective for the first part of the book and then randomly get Stevie's POV (though much needed), made this book feel unorganized and all over the place。 Again, you get used to it, but you really have to pay attention the the chapter headers。 I honestly can't say whether or not I would recommend Take Me Home Tonight, because I don't have strong feelings about it either way。 I didn't love or hate it, but did enjoy it enough to keep reading。 You should see my copy of the book - so many sticky notes! Maybe I'll post pictures later, haha。 If you've liked the author's previous books, you might like this one, but I don't have anything to compare it to。 If you've already read this one, I'd love to chat about it。 (★★★☆☆)Blog | Instagram | Twitter | Bloglovin' | Amazon | Pinterest 。。。more

The different points of view and interesting cast of side characters kept the story moving and interesting, always something new at each turn! Even when one of them gets caught it's made to be this big deal, but 18 is legally an adult and you can do whatever you want at that age without parental consent。 I get that for the majority of the book the characters couldn't have been aged down but it just didn't make sense to me why the parents would be this big issue。Verdict: it was good, just not anything special。 。。。more

I will read anything from Morgan Matson - and I know that I’ll love it! This book was no exception。 Kat and Stevie’s friendship was perfection and so relatable! I loved how even when they spoke their minds things didn’t really change (with the exception of them being separated) I feel like so many times something happens or there’s conflict and the friendship is just over - so this was a pleasant change from that。 And can we talk about Cary? I will say, I could have done without Teri’s storyline。 I liked her as friend, and the looks between Kat and Stevie when it came to Teri’s stories and love life。 But her whole thing just seemed unnecessary (not to mention suuuuuper far fetched) Other than that I 100% loved this book and definitely recommend giving it a read!Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced copy in return for an honest review。 。。。more

okay so i was super looking forward to this book and i was so obsessed with morgan branching out from her usual type of story! this is definitely different from her other books - partially because it's not set in the summer and partially because it has multiple POVs - and even though the vibe does feel a little different at times, it's also totally morgan。 she does such a great job of creating a FEELING and writing about setting in a way that's transportive and immersive。 i FELT like i was in ne okay so i was super looking forward to this book and i was so obsessed with morgan branching out from her usual type of story! this is definitely different from her other books - partially because it's not set in the summer and partially because it has multiple POVs - and even though the vibe does feel a little different at times, it's also totally morgan。 she does such a great job of creating a FEELING and writing about setting in a way that's transportive and immersive。 i FELT like i was in new york and i spent the whole time wishing i was there with my own best friend。 the different perspectives were really fun and interesting - although i didn't really love teri's pov ): - and i think it really did a lot for the two main characters to show their individual arcs。 personally i really connected to stevie and her arc, and it was really cool to see her grow as the book goes on。 also can we PLEASE talk about the CAMEOS!!!! there were a few really juicy ones and even though the one at the end took me by surprise it was also really sweet! it's so great getting to see morgan's old characters brought back to life in a new light。 AND BRAD WAS SO STINKIN CUTE I LOVE HIM SO MUCHi don't think this is my favorite morgan matson book (just because some of her others are SO GREAT), but i really loved what this book's core message was, that you shouldn't just accept life as you think it should be, you can take the time to change and evolve and try new things no matter where you are in life。 and i think that's especially poignant after a year of living in a pandemic。 even more so when it's set in the wonderful city of new york where everything is chaotic and cooky and fun。i will always and forever be a morgan matson fan, and i'm so excited to see where she goes next now that she's exploring new types of writing! 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers and Morgan Matson for this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 Kat and Stevie are BFFs。 They do everything together。 So when they decide to have a girls’ night in New York City behind their parents’ back, it sounds like the best night ever。 What happens is a crazy ride through New York and they discover who they are and what their priorities are。This was such fun。 Honestly, everything Morgan Matson writes is。 This was one of Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers and Morgan Matson for this ARC in exchange for my honest review。 Kat and Stevie are BFFs。 They do everything together。 So when they decide to have a girls’ night in New York City behind their parents’ back, it sounds like the best night ever。 What happens is a crazy ride through New York and they discover who they are and what their priorities are。This was such fun。 Honestly, everything Morgan Matson writes is。 This was one of my favorites though, along with “The Unexpected Everything”。 The characters were so wonderfully realistic and likable。 I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next。 I love how Ms。 Matson’s books always contain dog characters too。 I’m not normally a big YA fan but I make an exception occasionally。 Sometimes the exception is made for scouting books for my daughters but, sometimes, they’re for me。 Some of the themes in this book will never be outgrown。 Most notably, the need to win the approval of your parents and what a good friendship really adds to your life。 This book was so well-written and filled with so much heart。 The character of Mr。 Campbell was intolerable!! I loved how that wasn’t obvious until the latter half of the book。 He was arrogant and immature。 Gross! I loved how Kat gave him his payback without stooping to his level。 I thoroughly enjoyed this and am grateful for the opportunity to read it。 。。。more

Thanks to the publisher, via Edelweiss, for an advance e-galley for honest review。Maybe it's a result of no travel for well over a year now, but exploring New York City with the characters of this book was such an absolute treat。 I devoured this one, and I loved the characters as over the course of one night in New York they discover more about themselves and their friendship。 Kat and Stevie are both done really well and their different personalities and priorities shine in the narrative。 The id Thanks to the publisher, via Edelweiss, for an advance e-galley for honest review。Maybe it's a result of no travel for well over a year now, but exploring New York City with the characters of this book was such an absolute treat。 I devoured this one, and I loved the characters as over the course of one night in New York they discover more about themselves and their friendship。 Kat and Stevie are both done really well and their different personalities and priorities shine in the narrative。 The idea of being phoneless and alone in New York City (especially at 17/18) does sound really stressful, but this book shows how resourceful these two teenagers are, how quick thinking they are, and I think teen readers will appreciate how maturely the characters deal with the problems they encounter。 。。。more

Excited to say I got this as an ARC from Simon and Schuster (hehehe) If you know me you know I've always enjoyed Morgan Matson's books! I've always enjoyed reading every single one of her books since they're so light hearted and easy to read。 I think this book is going to be added to my top 5 Morgan Matson books, I think this one definitely it home considering I can relate to Kat and Stevie since I too was a drama student (barf。) But I really did enjoy this book I always love how MM's books are Excited to say I got this as an ARC from Simon and Schuster (hehehe) If you know me you know I've always enjoyed Morgan Matson's books! Take Me Home Tonight is Morgan Matson’s new YA novel。 This book is a coming of age story full of comedy, shenanigans, and friendship。 I absolutely loved it! It was such a wild ride。 The book starts out in one narrative and splits into three point of views as the crazy night ensues for all the friends, Kat, Stevie, and Teri。 Growing up so close to NYC, I’ve always wanted a crazy adventure with my friends like this and Matson’s writing made me feel like I was right there with the characters。 I did Take Me Home Tonight is Morgan Matson’s new YA novel。 This book is a coming of age story full of comedy, shenanigans, and friendship。 I absolutely loved it! TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT is an unexpected YA contemporary read, told from three perspectives。 Kat, Stevie, and Teri are all good friends from the intense theater club at their Connecticut high school。 The book begins with them eagerly anticipating the casting list (well, at least for Kat) for the Shakespeare play they will be putting on。 The casting list being postponed starts a series of errors that quickly take their Friday night off the rails。Kat and Stevie use Teri as their cover to head into NY TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT is an unexpected YA contemporary read, told from three perspectives。 Kat, Stevie, and Teri are all good friends from the intense theater club at their Connecticut high school。 The book begins with them eagerly anticipating the casting list (well, at least for Kat) for the Shakespeare play they will be putting on。 The casting list being postponed starts a series of errors that quickly take their Friday night off the rails。Kat and Stevie use Teri as their cover to head into NYC alone for the night, supposedly to enjoy Stevie's birthday dinner - but Kat has an ulterior motive。 As the pieces of their night begin to go haywire, they will need to reevaluate their friendship, priorities, and deal with everything life seems determined to throw their way, beginning with a forgotten cell phone。What I loved: This book is anything but boring, and there was a lot happening throughout。 There are definitely some humorous moments that keep a light-hearted nature to these series of misfortunes。 I also appreciated the light romances that help to carry the plot forward, with some really fun characters sprinkled throughout。 There are some themes that are interesting around family/stepsiblings difficulty and misunderstandings, the importance of digging a bit deeper, the power of friendship, and cellphone use。 This was definitely an entertaining read that kept the pages turning and laughter coming。What left me wanting more: I found some of the themes to be a bit troubling, such as the frequent lying to parents, which could have ended more dangerously, and the repeated pretending of a dog to be service dog (it was definitely not - a really bad practice for people who really need them and for those with allergies)。 The characters were often selfish and inconsiderate, and it was hard to feel too badly for them when their plots seemed to fail。 It also treats a lot of themes very lightly, with a mugging that turns into humor and a kidnapping that was frightening but somehow turned into a government spy thing with little kids pulled in (this book got pretty WILD)。 It does ask the reader to suspend disbelief and the side plot with Teri felt like a whole other story。Final verdict: With a lot of mishaps, wild adventures, and humor, TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT is an overall entertaining YA contemporary fiction。Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more
