Summary

10 hours, 35 minutes

From a #1 New York Times bestselling author comes this thrilling story that shows what happens when a dead man's secrets fall into the hands of vigilante antihero—drawing him down a dangerous road。

Over twenty years ago, the heiress Patricia Lockwood was abducted during a robbery of her family's estate, then locked inside an isolated cabin for months。 Patricia escaped, but so did her captors — and the items stolen from her family were never recovered。

Until now。 On the Upper West Side, a recluse is found murdered in his penthouse apartment, alongside two objects of note: a stolen Vermeer painting and a leather suitcase bearing the initials WHL3。 For the first time in years, the authorities have a lead — not only on Patricia's kidnapping, but also on another FBI cold case — with the suitcase and painting both pointing them toward one man。

Windsor Horne Lockwood III — or Win, as his few friends call him — doesn't know how his suitcase and his family's stolen painting ended up with a dead man。 But his interest is piqued, especially when the FBI tells him that the man who kidnapped his cousin was also behind an act of domestic terrorism — and that the conspirators may still be at large。 The two cases have baffled the FBI for decades, but Win has three things the FBI doesn't: a personal connection to the case; an ungodly fortune; and his own unique brand of justice。

A fast-paced, fun, and occasionally funny page-turner packed with memorable characters, plus an evocative dose of atmosphere from my neighborhood of West Seventy-second Street, including much more ink that anyone would expect for the dive bar on the corner。

Easily the most inane and imbecilic book I've had the misfortune to read in years。 While the genre is permitted a great deal of leeway and tolerance, the unbelievable characters and outlandish plot here are beyond the pale。 Coben is certainly capable of writing great "airport bookstore" suspense, but this one had me hoping the plane would crash, and quickly。 Easily the most inane and imbecilic book I've had the misfortune to read in years。 While the genre is permitted a great deal of leeway and tolerance, the unbelievable characters and outlandish plot here are beyond the pale。 Coben is certainly capable of writing great "airport bookstore" suspense, but this one had me hoping the plane would crash, and quickly。 。。。more

For those who have not read the Myron Bolitar series, this book fully introduces the character of Winsor Thorne Lockwood III, friend of Bolitar and his alter ego。 Always dark, Win has his own concept of justice and is not shy about imposing that justice from the safety of his wealth and connections。 I expect Coben will be further exploring this character, hence this book redeveloping the Win persona。 I would rather he be a foil to Myron Bolitar and have more stories where he is the protagonist。

It’s been a long time since I’ve read about the investigations of Myron and Win。 At one time I devoured these books but eventually moved on。 It was a nice trip down memory lane reading this book。 Enjoyed the story, enjoyed time with Win again even as somewhat deranged as he gets。 I love his disdain for things as well as his need for revenge for those that have been harmed。 I missed Myron in this book but kind of liked having a one on one with Win’s brilliant mind。

Phillip

Enjoyed, but wonder if Win needs Myron to balance out the extreme personality。 Will read the next if there is one。

Grittier than I like。 Coben weaves a great story, but it's a bleak world view where ends justify the means。 A moral morass。 Grittier than I like。 Coben weaves a great story, but it's a bleak world view where ends justify the means。 A moral morass。 。。。more

As an avid fan of Harlan Coben, especially his Myron Bolitar series, I was really excited to find out that Myron’s sidekick, Win, would get his own series。 Although pretty good, this first novel is not the homerun I’ve come to expect of Coben。 Part of it is perhaps that Coben hasn’t yet found Win’s voice as a main character, but one thing that struck me is the lack of character likability。 In the Bolitar series, Myron brought out Win’s human side。 Without him, Win is just cold and not really lik As an avid fan of Harlan Coben, especially his Myron Bolitar series, I was really excited to find out that Myron’s sidekick, Win, would get his own series。 Although pretty good, this first novel is not the homerun I’ve come to expect of Coben。 Part of it is perhaps that Coben hasn’t yet found Win’s voice as a main character, but one thing that struck me is the lack of character likability。 In the Bolitar series, Myron brought out Win’s human side。 Without him, Win is just cold and not really likable。 I’m looking forward to Book 2, hoping that Coben will manage to make me care about the main character。 。。。more

Win is best known as Myron Bolitar’s sidekick。 He is a super anti-hero。 His superpower is his wealth。 He will remind you of that fact every other page。 While I find his personality annoying, after awhile, I found the story intriguing。 The rich certainly are different。 I didn’t miss Myron at all。 Four stars。

2。5⭐This is my eighth book by the author。 I usually read Coben's standalone books and just one book from Myron Bolitar series。 Win is basically a new character to me。 He's an interesting guy, a charming narcissist of sort。 The audio is very good and spot on for the character (5 stars!)。 I can say I was enjoying the beginning of it, learning about the character, and excited with a new series。 The mystery never grabbed me and by half I found it boring。 I'll try one more Lockwood。 2。5⭐This is my eighth book by the author。 I usually read Coben's standalone books and just one book from Myron Bolitar series。 Win is basically a new character to me。 He's an interesting guy, a charming narcissist of sort。 The audio is very good and spot on for the character (5 stars!)。 I can say I was enjoying the beginning of it, learning about the character, and excited with a new series。 The mystery never grabbed me and by half I found it boring。 I'll try one more Lockwood。 。。。more

Win would probably say of himself that he doesn't suffer fools, however, as the lead character I just found him totally insufferable。 His crutch phrase was WAY overused, and the dude brings up Myron's name so often that you would think he has some sort of school girl crush on him。 There are many cool twists and turns that you would expect from Coben, but Win is just too annoying to lead his own series。 Win would probably say of himself that he doesn't suffer fools, however, as the lead character I just found him totally insufferable。 His crutch phrase was WAY overused, and the dude brings up Myron's name so often that you would think he has some sort of school girl crush on him。 There are many cool twists and turns that you would expect from Coben, but Win is just too annoying to lead his own series。 。。。more

I was torn with what to rate this book。 While it is classic Harlan Coben- with twist and turns you don’t see coming, making it a 5。 The main character is such an arrogant jerk, it sometimes made the story hard to read。 Flexing his money, bragging about his strength。 Yuck - I gave him a 1。 I averaged it out and gave the book a 3。

Catherine

Fantastic。 Rock on Win。 More please。 Jessica too。

Karen Joc

Great to see Win coming into his own instead of just being on the sidelines。 We get and inside into his complex affluent lifestyle and his family。 Every family has secret past what is this ones 。。。。

Christina Andersen

Blaaaah。 I hated the character Win。 He was a huge entitled jerk。 And he doesn’t care what I think, he made that clear。 But I will not be reading any more books from this series。 This is the first time Coban has disappointed me。

Brett Sorge

I have a problem with the ending。 It just got to convoluted and overly complex。 the author just through to much into the story。 Most of the book was quite good and entertaining, but the way it was ended just gave me a headache。

Deb

This is true Harlan Coben。 Promoting and featuring Win as the title character is a great move。 He has, in the Myron Bolitar series, proven to be quite unique and very quirky, not always in a good way。 Win readily admits that the choices he makes may be somewhat questionable, and, as a reader, I would agree。 His ethics are good fodder for discussion。 The story, the pacing, and the twists are all what you expect from Mr。 Coben and not always an easy read but eminently unputdownable。

Continues to mention Myron throughout the book without Myron being there。 The tale starts with Win beating up a bully who stalks his girlfriends。 When Win arrives back to NYC Ry Strauss is found murdered in the Beresford apartment absolutely hoarded items clog up his appt。 a Vaneer painting hangs on the wall stolen from Wins family 20 years ago。 Also Wins old suitcase casts doubt over the killer。 Win goes on a shocking journey that takes in the James Six who killed a few kids chucking Molotov Co Continues to mention Myron throughout the book without Myron being there。 The tale starts with Win beating up a bully who stalks his girlfriends。 When Win arrives back to NYC Ry Strauss is found murdered in the Beresford apartment absolutely hoarded items clog up his appt。 a Vaneer painting hangs on the wall stolen from Wins family 20 years ago。 Also Wins old suitcase casts doubt over the killer。 Win goes on a shocking journey that takes in the James Six who killed a few kids chucking Molotov Cocktails in the 1970’s。 Getting into it Lyons brothers who are out for blood in revenge。 Win ends up in hospital only to get a visit from a well known gangster out for blood read in two days couldn’t put it down。RECOMMENDED 。。。more

WIN Disappointed MeDisappointed In WIN。 I read and thoroughly enjoyed Myron Bolitar series mainly of the relationship between the two。 It just doesn't work for me without Myron。 WIN had was too preachy。 I'm not sure I would read another book about his character without the two together。 WIN Disappointed MeDisappointed In WIN。 I read and thoroughly enjoyed Myron Bolitar series mainly of the relationship between the two。 It just doesn't work for me without Myron。 WIN had was too preachy。 I'm not sure I would read another book about his character without the two together。 。。。more

I'm a fan of Harlan Coben's work, and always found the morally gray character of Win interesting。 I enjoyed this, but wouldn't say it was one of his best。 I'd only recommend it if you've read at least some of the Myron Bolitar series。 There are many references to characters in those books that make more sense/add more to this book if you know that history。 It was a fast read and became better nearer the end。 I'm a fan of Harlan Coben's work, and always found the morally gray character of Win interesting。 I enjoyed this, but wouldn't say it was one of his best。 I'd only recommend it if you've read at least some of the Myron Bolitar series。 There are many references to characters in those books that make more sense/add more to this book if you know that history。 It was a fast read and became better nearer the end。 。。。more

I won this from Goodreads, thank you! I enjoyed this one, as I thought Win was worthy of his own story。 As with pretty much any Harlan Coben book, I zipped right through it。 Very involved plot here but I enjoyed all the twists and turns。

Win has been one of my favorite side-characters in novels for years, but I wasn't sure making him the main character of a book would work。 I was wrong。 Loved this book from my favorite fiction author。 It'll keep you guessing until the end。 Win has been one of my favorite side-characters in novels for years, but I wasn't sure making him the main character of a book would work。 I was wrong。 Loved this book from my favorite fiction author。 It'll keep you guessing until the end。 。。。more

4。5 stars because I love a book that twists and turns right to the end。 4。5 stars because I know that I should feel some remorse about being pulled into a book that has much more violence than I should feel comfortable reading。

An excellent mystery。 I thought the premise for this story was excellent。 This Lockwood character is new hopefully I will be seeing of more of him。
