Summary

From the USA Today bestselling author of the international sensation Baby Teeth comes a claustrophobic psychological thriller about one woman’s nightmarish spiral while quarantined with her mother。

Grace isn’t exactly thrilled when her newly widowed mother, Jackie, asks to move in with her。 They’ve never had a great relationship, and Grace likes her space—especially now that she’s stuck at home during a pandemic。 Then again, she needs help with the mortgage after losing her job。 And maybe it’ll be a chance for them to bond—or at least give each other a hand。

But living with Mother isn’t for everyone。 Good intentions turn bad soon after Jackie moves in。 Old wounds fester; new ones open。 Grace starts having nightmares about her disabled twin sister, who died when they were kids。 And Jackie discovers that Grace secretly catfishes people online—a hobby Jackie thinks is unforgivable。

When Jackie makes an earth-shattering accusation against her, Grace sees it as an act of revenge, and it sends her spiraling into a sleep-deprived madness。 As the walls close in, the ghosts of Grace’s past collide with a new but familiar threat: Mom。

I did not enjoy entering the world of lockdown again, but I must say that is a brilliant setting for a book。Grace lives alone in her new home, when her newly widowed mother Jackie needs a place to live。 Mother and daughter are estranged and their past is overshadowed by Grace's twin Hope and her death 25 years ago。 Grace has lost her job due to covid and is desperately trying to find a new job。 Her only comfort is her best friend Miguel and his cat Coco。The atmosphere is claustrophobic and unrea I did not enjoy entering the world of lockdown again, but I must say that is a brilliant setting for a book。Grace lives alone in her new home, when her newly widowed mother Jackie needs a place to live。 Mother and daughter are estranged and their past is overshadowed by Grace's twin Hope and her death 25 years ago。 Grace has lost her job due to covid and is desperately trying to find a new job。 Her only comfort is her best friend Miguel and his cat Coco。The atmosphere is claustrophobic and unreal。 We have an unreliable narrator and horrific dream sequences。 There are just a handful of characters and Miguel is the only one I really liked。 Grace is a great character, though, independent and driven, even though she has one questionable hobby。 I quite enjoyed the story。 There was a moment in the middle, where the story dragged a little, but it picked up nicely afterwards。 The ending was mindblowing。Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a copy of this book。 。。。more

hmmThere is no ending。 Terrible。 15 words are not required to state that fact。 But six more are needed。 Wow。

2。5 starsThis book is a bit difficult for me to review because as I read it, I became increasingly confused as to what the heck was going on。 I love psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators, but at times, I felt like I needed a psychology degree to figure out the plot of this book。I thought this started out pretty strong, but then it went downhill。 I got tired of trying to figure out if Grace was dreaming or living in reality, and I found some parts to be repetitive。 I'm not sure how he 2。5 starsThis book is a bit difficult for me to review because as I read it, I became increasingly confused as to what the heck was going on。 I love psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators, but at times, I felt like I needed a psychology degree to figure out the plot of this book。I thought this started out pretty strong, but then it went downhill。 I got tired of trying to figure out if Grace was dreaming or living in reality, and I found some parts to be repetitive。 I'm not sure how her internet catfishing hobby was relative to the plot。 I have a theory, but I'm not sure I'm right。 🤔I did like one of the plot twists at the end。 It was unexpected and shocking。 I was happy to see that there was an epilogue。 I was hoping it would clear up some of my confusion, but it only added to it。Thank you @Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the e-arc of this book。 。。。more

mind blown! This was a crazy and odd grip you don’t let go kind of story! I am a person who needs complete closure and at least most of the how/why did this happen questions answered。 This did not give me that。 I think a lot was left open for several characters and I wonder if there will be another book??? I’d jump all over it! While all of my questions were not answered this was still a great read and I’ll definitely look into others by Zoje Stage!

I have no idea what I just read。 This book is like diving into somebody’s delusional dreamscape。 It jumps back and forth from reality and it takes you a while to figure out if you’re reading a dream or not。 I think the author wanted the reader to feel the same way as the character, and I did, but I found it really annoying。I’ve read a few books now that have the unreliable narrator trope and I’ve started to realize that I’m not that into it。 I generally find the characters really irritating and I have no idea what I just read。 This book is like diving into somebody’s delusional dreamscape。 It jumps back and forth from reality and it takes you a while to figure out if you’re reading a dream or not。 I think the author wanted the reader to feel the same way as the character, and I did, but I found it really annoying。I’ve read a few books now that have the unreliable narrator trope and I’ve started to realize that I’m not that into it。 I generally find the characters really irritating and the story becomes confusing and frustrating。 I enjoyed the writing and some of the story elements but I was really distracted by how annoyed I was with the main character。 This book also has a pandemic element to it which was sort of interesting but honestly I just found this book really confusing。📷 Find me on Instagram @thelastfew。pages 。。。more

InterestingI enjoyed the overall story, but it just left me feeling incomplete。 I don't really understand what happened or was meant to be thought at the end。 I did find it very interesting and different from other things I've read。 InterestingI enjoyed the overall story, but it just left me feeling incomplete。 I don't really understand what happened or was meant to be thought at the end。 I did find it very interesting and different from other things I've read。 。。。more

Mothered Very confusing book, hard to get into。 It took a long time to finish this book。 I will likely not read another book from this author。

An interesting read - very dark, and I'm left with no real answers。 It was compelling enough to keep me reading, but also felt a little flat in places。 An interesting read - very dark, and I'm left with no real answers。 It was compelling enough to keep me reading, but also felt a little flat in places。 。。。more

Mothered is a fever dream of a novel about memory and entrapment and truth。 I love a story about sick families, and this one is very ill。 Grace is stuck at home with her estranged mother during the pandemic。 Stress is at an all time high and Grace is plagued by weird, revelatory dreams and an obsession with figuring out the dark truths of her childhood。

Excellent readI have never read any of her other books, but now I want to。 This was a really great book and kept me wondering what was even real at times。 I highly recommend it。 I'm going to try another one of her books and hope that it's as good。 Excellent readI have never read any of her other books, but now I want to。 This was a really great book and kept me wondering what was even real at times。 I highly recommend it。 I'm going to try another one of her books and hope that it's as good。 。。。more

What a clusterfuck and disappointment! There was SOOO MUCH going in and this doesn’t compare the authors first novel。 I was so confused and couldn’t wrap my head around the storyI loved the first 50 pages and then it fell apart

Interesting read, but not a lot of "plot。" This came across like a case study of how a pandemic can affect already unstable people。 Just a bit anticlimactic for my taste。 Interesting read, but not a lot of "plot。" This came across like a case study of how a pandemic can affect already unstable people。 Just a bit anticlimactic for my taste。 。。。more

Having your judgmental, passive aggressive mother move in with you could be just about everyone’s nightmare。 Add in the fact that Jackie and Grace have a tumultuous relationship at best and neither are what could pass as good people, it’s gonna make for an interesting story。 We follow two time lines : the current where Jackie and Grace have moved in together and the past where Grace is left to care for her sister, Hope。 There are genuinely creepy scenes。 Not knowing what’s real and what’s a drea Having your judgmental, passive aggressive mother move in with you could be just about everyone’s nightmare。 Add in the fact that Jackie and Grace have a tumultuous relationship at best and neither are what could pass as good people, it’s gonna make for an interesting story。 We follow two time lines : the current where Jackie and Grace have moved in together and the past where Grace is left to care for her sister, Hope。 There are genuinely creepy scenes。 Not knowing what’s real and what’s a dream will always remind me of when I struggled with severe night terrors。 I also love when author’s are able to take their grief and turn it into something else。 I firmly believe that horror and thrillers are the best genres to get one’s grief out into the world and truly explore it。 There were moments that I didn’t enjoy or didn’t care for, but there were others that kept me intrigued and left me wanting to grab the book again and again。 Definitely recommend if you’re already a fan of the author, find the pandemic lockdown stories intriguing, or genuinely enjoy a ‘batshit’ story - as the author describes it herself。 Probably not meant for you if you like all of the answers at any given time or if Covid Lockdowns are still a touchy subject。 。。。more

Wildy Fantastic This book is very complicated in its simplicity。 A pandemic of needing truth how refreshingly crazy。 It must have been exhausting to write but I thank the author for doing so。

A quick read and disturbing but I didn’t like it as much as Baby Teeth, which really stuck with me。 This is about a woman whose mom moves in with her during the quarantine phase of the pandemic。 Trauma from the past and mental illness reveal themselves。

First time reviewer here but I have to say that I’m a huge fan of the latest from Zoje Stage。 I got an ARC of Mothered which then led me down a rabbit hole of her other works。 A fascinating new voice in psychological horror! She’s got some fabulous twists and some twisted situations in her stories that keep me turning those pages! Really a unique voice in this genre。

Paula D'Alessandris

The claustrophobia of being housebound with someone with whom you have lifelong issues is palpable is Stage’s latest offering。 The pandemic is a perfect backdrop for this story of mother-daughter trauma。 The surreal nature of a global pandemic heightens the tension between the protagonist and her mother。 Restless nights full of horrifying dreams (or are they memories?) ratchet up the tension。 What a great read!
