Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Presumed Innocent and The Last Trial returns with a riveting legal thriller in which a reckless private detective is embroiled in a fraught police scandal。

For as long as Lucia Gomez has been the police chief in the city of Highland Isle, near Kindle County, she has known that any woman in law enforcement must walk a precarious line between authority and camaraderie to gain respect。  She has maintained a spotless reputation—until now。 Three male police officers have accused her of soliciting sex in exchange for promotions to higher ranks。 With few people left who she can trust, Chief Gomez turns to an old friend, Rik Dudek, to act as her attorney in the federal grand jury investigation, insisting to Rik that the accusations against her are part of an ugly smear campaign designed to destroy her career and empower her enemies—both outside the police force and within。。

Clarice “Pinky” Granum spent most of her youth experimenting with an impressive array of drugs and failing out of various professions, including the police academy。 Pinky knows that in the eyes of most people, she's nothing but a screwup—but she doesn't trust most people's opinions anyway。 Moreover, she finally has a respectable-enough job as a licensed P。I。 working for Rik on his roster of mostly minor cases, like workman's comp, DUIs and bar fights。 Rik's shabby office and even shabbier cases are a far cry from the kinds of high-profile criminal matters Pinky became familiar with in the law office of her grandfather, Sandy Stern。 But Rik and Pinky feel that Chief Gomez’s case, which has attracted national attention, is their chance to break into the legal big leagues。

Guided by her gut instinct and razor-sharp investigative skills, Pinky dives headfirst into a twisted scandal that will draw her into the deepest recesses of the city’s criminal networks, as well as the human mind。 But she will need every scrap of tenacity and courage to unravel the dark secrets those closest to her are determined to keep hidden。

Scott Turow continue use to be able to construct an enjoyable if not fantastic thriller。 Although courtroom scenes were involved, this really was a non-court mystery/thriller。 I loved the Pinky, tattooed, nose ringed heroine。 Ok, so there weren’t many ethical characters, but it was a mystery。 I hope Pinky and her friends return quickly。

I loved both the book and the movie of Presumed Innocent, but after I finished Suspect I had to check and make sure that I was correctly remembering the author of Presumed Innocent as Scott Turow。 I don't know what has happened in the 35 years between the books, but based on past experience I hoped for a cleverly thought-out mystery, interesting characters, and a taut plot in Suspect but I didn't find any of these things。 PI Clarice "Pinky" Granum (granddaughter of Sandy Stern), a former drug ad I loved both the book and the movie of Presumed Innocent, but after I finished Suspect I had to check and make sure that I was correctly remembering the author of Presumed Innocent as Scott Turow。 I don't know what has happened in the 35 years between the books, but based on past experience I hoped for a cleverly thought-out mystery, interesting characters, and a taut plot in Suspect but I didn't find any of these things。 PI Clarice "Pinky" Granum (granddaughter of Sandy Stern), a former drug addict and police academy dropout, is supposed to be unconventional but she is really a stereotype that behaves predictably in this less-than-compelling plot。 I hope Pinky doesn't become part of an ongoing series, but this is probably the last Scott Turow book for me。 。。。more

Have read many of his books, but this has got to be the most slowest written book he’s ever written。

Pinky is KickassI love all Scott Turow books and this was no exception。 However this one really is a fast paced thriller with great characters , with the protagonist being Pinky, Sandy Stern’s granddaughter, who is a PI for a law firm that represents the Chief of Police who has been set up in a police scandal。 Pinky, flawed tho she may be , is the hero of the twisted tale。

This book was ok, not one this author’s best。 I didn’t particularly like any of the characters。 The hook of a potential corrupt police chief didn’t really ring with me as something I was particularly interested in or cared about, even though I originally thought it would。 The resolution was also pretty unoriginal。

So I imagine myself as Scott Turow。 As I'm going to sleep at night, all I think is Grisham, Grisham, damn him Grisham。 I can't sell as many books as he does, I don't ride the charts like he does, and man I am just as good if not better a writer。 I wake up and think Grisham, Grisham, Grisham。So in this book Turow pivots。 No more legal fiction for him, this is straight up crime。 Well I mean it is legal-adjacent, there are lawyers and a small amount of courtroom action, but mostly this is all about So I imagine myself as Scott Turow。 As I'm going to sleep at night, all I think is Grisham, Grisham, damn him Grisham。 I can't sell as many books as he does, I don't ride the charts like he does, and man I am just as good if not better a writer。 I wake up and think Grisham, Grisham, Grisham。So in this book Turow pivots。 No more legal fiction for him, this is straight up crime。 Well I mean it is legal-adjacent, there are lawyers and a small amount of courtroom action, but mostly this is all about crime and criminals and the people who track them down。Turow has also decided he can beat Grisham in one other area。 He's decided to push the age of his protagonists down to dare I say, millennials。 And to top it off, the first person narrator is a woman。 So 73 y。o。 Scott Turow is writing in the voice of an early 30s female, and that includes sex。 Risky! When a man writes a woman there is not much he can do to defend himself when the inevitable carping occurs, he just has to suck it up and hope that the majority of his readers don't actually mind as much as the noisy few。So anyway as expected from Turow very tightly wrapped, good story, good narrative arc。 Loved the book and read it in just a few days。I'm going to complain about two things even though I still give the book a full five stars。His female lead, Pinky, is just a little too cute and to much of a class manic pixie dream girl for my tastes。 She doesn't fit the definition exactly but she's close, and I think it's just a bit of a lazy way to create an interesting character。 She's wandering through adulthood doing all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons and getting away because ultimately, she's killing it。 Okay。Second, his Omar character is a bit of a stereotype as well, and I think he is coasting a bit on that。 Everyone loved Omar on The Wire, he was a killer and a criminal, but because he had a code of honor and only killed other criminals, we all really liked him。 TWO seems to be a lot like that。 (Maybe I need to start calling this the Jack Reacher strategy - all the same reasons and a little more contemporary。)Well, you gotta write something, and people are going to find things like that to complain about。 If you like Scott Turow, you'll like this book。 If you like good crime fiction, you'll like this book。 If you like John Grisham, please don't tell Scott, he's sensitive on the subject。 。。。more

The word that kept coming to mind as I read this was 'workmanlike'? Great BookNot since Presumed Innocent have I read such a great book by Scott Turow。 A well-paced page turner I couldn’t put down。 I loved Pinky, the bisexual private detective with a big heart and a brilliant mind。 I’m sure we will see more of her in future Turow books。
