Summary

Do you know what your brain is made of? How does memory function? What is a neuron and how does it work? For that matter what's a comic? And in the words of Lewis Carroll's famous caterpillar: "Who are you?"

Neurocomic is a psychedelic journey through the human brain that explores how we feel, remember, and dream by way of graphic novel。 Examining the differences between brain, mind, and soul as well as how different mental illnesses and substances impact our brain activity, it ventures from deserted islands and neuron forests to memory caves and castles of deception。 Hana’s brilliant use of fantasy as a framing and world building to educate the reader is brilliant。 Using a mythical brigade of characters like guitar-playing sea slugs, giant toads, and sea monsters to tell the story, she creates a “down the rabbit hole” atmosphere that takes the reader on a trip that feels at times psychedelic, although the art is done entirely in black and white。

Now in paperback, Hana Roš and Matteo Farinella provide an insight into the most complex thing in the universe。

This is basically a textbook with nice comic illustrations。 The stars are for the illustrator, the writing and story (or lack of story) were pretty painful to read。

HQ muito simples e didática sobre neurociência e o funcionamento do cérebro。 É bem curtinho e gostoso de ler

This book is a sort of trippy voyage through the brain, learning about things like neurons and synapses as we go。 We also get a bit of a history lesson about the pioneers of neuroscience, which I found really interesting。 Even though I did feel like they simplified the science for noobs like me, some of the concepts and terminology definitely still went over my head!I did feel like I learned something though, and it'll make a nice quick read for anyone who's maybe starting to study the brain at This book is a sort of trippy voyage through the brain, learning about things like neurons and synapses as we go。 We also get a bit of a history lesson about the pioneers of neuroscience, which I found really interesting。 Even though I did feel like they simplified the science for noobs like me, some of the concepts and terminology definitely still went over my head!I did feel like I learned something though, and it'll make a nice quick read for anyone who's maybe starting to study the brain at college or even high school。 。。。more

A simple, easy to read introduction to neuroscience。 The explanations are very much oversimplified, but considering the constraints of the format the author has done well。 This book is good if you are curious about neuroscience but have no formal training in it。 It gives a nice overview of the key figures and concepts in the history of neuroscientific discovery。

This graphic novel is a surreal trip through the brain as the main character attempts to understand how he got trapped in the brain and uses neural pathways to escape。 Along the way he speaks to several famous neurological scientists and experts。 It's an interesting way to learn about the brain and the illustrations were very clear and easy to understand while still looking like a surreal landscape。 The ending was clever as well。 Content advisory: one anatomically correct illustration of nude ma This graphic novel is a surreal trip through the brain as the main character attempts to understand how he got trapped in the brain and uses neural pathways to escape。 Along the way he speaks to several famous neurological scientists and experts。 It's an interesting way to learn about the brain and the illustrations were very clear and easy to understand while still looking like a surreal landscape。 The ending was clever as well。 Content advisory: one anatomically correct illustration of nude male and female monsters。 。。。more

As a future neuroscientist, the info was interesting and eplained rather well。 As a book nerd, the plot was kinda funky where this annoying guy just wants to leave and by the end went nowhere。 As an artist, the art was straight up creepy and weird, tho that might be the point since the brain can be an odd place。 Overall, interesting novel。 If it would have been drawn a bit less creepy, then it would be a great way to teach neuroscience!

Muy rápido de leer y muy interesante。 Te explica todo de manera divertida。 Me encantó。

Lovely gift from a work colleague 🥰Quirky fun comic book that takes you on a journey about the key discoveries underpinning modern neuroscience - it was like revising my neuro course at uni ! Art style is bonkers and a bit weird but it’s very fun and the cover is very pretty! My inner neuro nerd is very happy 😃

4。25 stars。 i absolutely loved the way the comics presented the way brain works。 it's easy to understand and good for people any age that have a will to learn more。 4。25 stars。 i absolutely loved the way the comics presented the way brain works。 it's easy to understand and good for people any age that have a will to learn more。 。。。more

“。。。And now the giant squid is looking for REVENGE!” (as she should be) Rating: 3。75 stars (rounded up to 4) around 3 stars after further reflection Categorizations: Graphic Novel, Nonfiction, Science → Neuroscience Pacing: Fast Overall Impact: I think I am so excited by the concept of this existing that I’m slightly biased in favor of it despite the issues many people were having。 The Good: I love comic scholarship- this makes learning about the concepts I studied in my freshman year “。。。And now the giant squid is looking for REVENGE!” (as she should be) Rating: 3。75 stars (rounded up to 4) around 3 stars after further reflection Categorizations: Graphic Novel, Nonfiction, Science → Neuroscience Pacing: Fast Overall Impact: I think I am so excited by the concept of this existing that I’m slightly biased in favor of it despite the issues many people were having。 The Good: I love comic scholarship- this makes learning about the concepts I studied in my freshman year neuroscience classes so much more accessible。 I wish for more educational nonfiction graphic novels like this to be integrated into beginner’s curriculum/school curriculum in general。 Accessibility through multimodality is needed much more in the education system。 The Bad: This is so painfully traditionally heteronormative。 The woman only existing to be saved from the castle。 All male scientists explaining the history of neuroscience。 Okay, so historically men were the ones who had the privilege to be able to practice science more freely; but there was no diversity in this book that reflected the actual breadth of neuroscientists in our history。 A lot of people who read this shared this view- and it’s true that it’s the main detractor。 Important Components: The Illustrations: I thought the artwork was cool。 The characters were a bit strange looking, but it went with the vibes。 The landscapes and creatures were very much my style。 The cover is gorgeous。 The Concept Work: While the transitions were fast, the different neuroscience concepts were explained at a level friendly to beginners and that keeps your attention moving forward with the text/illustrations。 I really liked the comic-like visualizations of the processes (bird villain with a key beak!) and the “fell-down-the-rabbit-hole” feel of the adventure (big fan of Alice in Wonderland)。 The Worldbuilding/Plot: I liked the meta ending that wrapped back around。 Although it can err on the cheesy side sometimes, I like that it actually reflected the way the brain operates。 Summary: TLDR: Not diverse in its content, but accessible in its medium。 A fun intro to the interworking of the brain!EDIT: I have inhaled books this year that have continually upped my standards, so I brought this down a star rating for the aforementioned critiques! 。。。more

If you, like me, never retained anything from biology but have a deep fascination and curiosity surrounding the brain and neuroscience, then this niche comic book is for you! I loved the visual motifs they used, and everything is explained pretty succinctly。 I definitely want to read something more in-depth on all of the same systems and mechanisms explained here。RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone with a brain and love of giant squids。

EXCELLENT! Not perfect as informational comic books go, but as close as I’ve seen (after a short but intense review of the literature, as they say)。 I found it pretty astonishing that so much information was packed - but not too packed - into about 250 comic panels, with minimal words。 And I found it embarrassing that I took notes, but there we are。 It wasn’t really helpful for my current writing project in terms of characters (there were no superheroes) but it was so good on other points, I say EXCELLENT! It's a fun little read。 I'm not sure I got a ton from it, but I could certainly see it used as a teaching tool for kids or adults who want basic info about the brain。 It's a fun little read。 I'm not sure I got a ton from it, but I could certainly see it used as a teaching tool for kids or adults who want basic info about the brain。 。。。more

I really liked the art style。 It surprised me。 The art felt a bit drab at a point, but it was manageable, considering the length of this book。Coming to the subject, the concept is amazing。 The ending was mind-blowing。 But the authors could've done better job with the facts and definitions, it's wikipedia type at times。 Anyone who's totally unfamiliar with neuroscience may find it difficult。 Not a 101 book, but can read if have some basic knowledge of the subject。Overall, I enjoyed reading 'Neuro I really liked the art style。 It surprised me。 The art felt a bit drab at a point, but it was manageable, considering the length of this book。Coming to the subject, the concept is amazing。 The ending was mind-blowing。 But the authors could've done better job with the facts and definitions, it's wikipedia type at times。 Anyone who's totally unfamiliar with neuroscience may find it difficult。 Not a 101 book, but can read if have some basic knowledge of the subject。Overall, I enjoyed reading 'Neurocomic'。。I was going to rate this 4 but seeing all these b*tth*rt reviews changed my mind。 What do you people want? An interesting idea that was not well executed。 The art distracted me from learning about the subject matter。 The authors attempted to give it a story line but it felt forced and jarring。

What a delightful read! First of all, the hard-bound cover with silver and gold etched text gives it a vintage feel and it's the reason why real bookshelves should continue to exist。 The content is also very succinct and told through the story of a wandering guy tripping through the brain。 The initial structure first, then the detailed workings of the axon - particularly the neurotransmitters and the way they work with receptors at synapses (this was novel information for me and I loved how it w What a delightful read! The information was interesting, but the story/illustration was gross。 The main character is a white dude who spends much of the book trying to escape so he can hit on a woman he's never talked to, who is the only woman in the book。 The only portrayal of a non-white person is offensively ugly。 The main character is whiny and annoying。 I finished it quickly just to be done with it, and will never recommend it to anyone。 The information was interesting, but the story/illustration was gross。 The main character is a white dude who spends much of the book trying to escape so he can hit on a woman he's never talked to, who is the only woman in the book。 The only portrayal of a non-white person is offensively ugly。 The main character is whiny and annoying。 I finished it quickly just to be done with it, and will never recommend it to anyone。 。。。more

It's a simplified story version of how the brain works。 Pretty quick read ,is best read in a single go。 Storytelling could have been a bit better considering the complexity of the topic however it's a good trigger read to inquire further on how our brain works。 Gave 3 stars because by end of the book there was a feeling of incomplete knowledge and I couldn't really feel a closure of the science that has been tried to be explained in the book。 But overall it's a good one time read。 It's a simplified story version of how the brain works。 Pretty quick read ,is best read in a single go。 Storytelling could have been a bit better considering the complexity of the topic however it's a good trigger read to inquire further on how our brain works。 Gave 3 stars because by end of the book there was a feeling of incomplete knowledge and I couldn't really feel a closure of the science that has been tried to be explained in the book。 But overall it's a good one time read。 。。。more
