Sandra Brown books have been a go to for me for many years。 She's a fabulous story teller and does an incredible job of keeping each story fresh and putting twists into each book to keep her readers guessing to the very end。 This story is no different。 Some touchy subjects in this one, drugs and partying, consequences from those events, secrets that are kept, life changing events。 Very well done。 I received an ARC through Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review。 Sandra Brown books have been a go to for me for many years。 She's a fabulous story teller and does an incredible job of keeping each story fresh and putting twists into each book to keep her readers guessing to the very end。 This story is no different。 Some touchy subjects in this one, drugs and partying, consequences from those events, secrets that are kept, life changing events。 Very well done。 I received an ARC through Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving my review。 。。。more

The solidly accessible writing and intriguing backstory kept me reading, but overall this book falls squarely into the “skip it” pile。There really isn’t anything innovative or new about Overkill。 The most fascinating character by far is Rebecca, who isn’t even really a character at all beyond some verrrry slim backstory (which happened to be my favourite parts of the book!)I found the villain to be such a cartoon。 He didn’t have any depth or subtlety, and the fact that even his friends and famil The solidly accessible writing and intriguing backstory kept me reading, but overall this book falls squarely into the “skip it” pile。There really isn’t anything innovative or new about Overkill。 The most fascinating character by far is Rebecca, who isn’t even really a character at all beyond some verrrry slim backstory (which happened to be my favourite parts of the book!)I found the villain to be such a cartoon。 He didn’t have any depth or subtlety, and the fact that even his friends and family saw him as a bad egg really doesn’t give you much reason to see him as anything but one dimensional。The romance felt…weird。 I didn’t buy the sexual tension whatsoever。The plot…ugh it had such opportunities! But the characters themselves let it down。 Our leading man just had no agency or backbone to move the plot forwards。 We’re basically just sitting around waiting for something to happen。 。。。more

The story of a former football star, his ex-wife and a sociopath was mesmerizing and at times disturbing。 Zach Bridger lost his career when his wife suffered a severe injury after being attacked by sociopath Eban Clarke。 Rebecca didn’t die but she just as well might have since her body is being kept alive by machines。 When Eban is released from prison, assistant DA Kate Lennon comes to Zach’s hideaway home to request that he help her put Eban away for life。 The plot becomes a little convoluted a The story of a former football star, his ex-wife and a sociopath was mesmerizing and at times disturbing。 Zach Bridger lost his career when his wife suffered a severe injury after being attacked by sociopath Eban Clarke。 Rebecca didn’t die but she just as well might have since her body is being kept alive by machines。 When Eban is released from prison, assistant DA Kate Lennon comes to Zach’s hideaway home to request that he help her put Eban away for life。 The plot becomes a little convoluted at times, with an underlying theme of euthanasia and parental wishes versus the wishes of the former husband。 Even the desires of the justice system come into play。 There are many characters who just seemed secondary but by the end of the book, they played a major role, like Theo and Cal, Eban’s partners in crime。 Eban’s father is a scion of society and has always managed to get him out of whatever trouble he is in, but Eban’s proclivity towards cruelty and danger may be his undoing。 The book is set in several different locations, including North Carolina and New Orleans because Zach has settled in NC while Rebecca is in a hospital in New Orleans。 I was saddened by the whole premise of the book because Rebecca is not an innocent victim。 She participated in her own destruction and then Zach was left holding the bag for her actions, blamed by the media and her family。 The characters were very well-developed, easy to like or to hate just as the author seemed to intend。 The plot was so twisted in places that there were scenes that were somewhat unbelievable but very dramatic。 This is a suspense book with some thriller mixed in as well as romance。 The ending is satisfying, with all of the loose ends tied up together。Fans of the author and a book that meanders down side paths while telling a good story will enjoy this novel。 It does have triggers like assault and sexual abuse, just so readers are aware of what to expect。 DisclaimerDisclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley。 I was not required to write a positive review。 The opinions expressed are my own。 I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255, “Guides Concerning the Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising。” 。。。more

OVERKILL is a riveting and compelling light suspense/thriller read。 Zach is a successful football player whose life has been haunted by his ex-wife, Rebecca。 Four years ago, she had been attacked at a party and left in a coma from which it was expected that she would never recover。 However, though they had been long divorced, she had left him as the person to make health decisions for her, a responsibility he would never have wanted。 He has subsequently paid for her treatment and left the choice OVERKILL is a riveting and compelling light suspense/thriller read。 Zach is a successful football player whose life has been haunted by his ex-wife, Rebecca。 Four years ago, she had been attacked at a party and left in a coma from which it was expected that she would never recover。 However, though they had been long divorced, she had left him as the person to make health decisions for her, a responsibility he would never have wanted。 He has subsequently paid for her treatment and left the choice with her parents。Now, her attacker, the wealthy Eban Clarke, has been released from prison early, barely serving time for leaving her as she is。 While he cannot be tried for the same crime, a prosecutor named Kate Lennon wants to prevent him from repeating his crime。 If Rebecca dies, then he can be tried for her murder, so she has approached Zach to request he reconsider the indefinite life support - a challenging ask。 As Zach considers what Rebecca would want, he finds himself embroiled at the center of the controversy, and Eban, her attacker, has plans for him of his own。Like other Brown books, the writing of this one pulls the reader in right from the start and keeps a steady pace throughout。 It is completely riveting right from the start, with various perspectives given throughout to tell a consuming story of loss, tough decisions, morality, and the sinister power of wealth。 Zach is a compelling character, who is trying to do his best in an impossible situation while living his life outside of the spotlight。 Kate is another genuine and heartfelt character who has noble intentions in bringing Eban to justice。As the story takes some unexpected twists and turns, I appreciated the way that romance is woven amidst the thought-provoking themes, case, and thriller aspects。 I found this story impossible to put down, and loved the way the story was told from beginning to shocking end。Overall, OVERKILL is a consuming and riveting suspense/thriller read that I would highly recommend picking up for anyone who loves an unputdownable story with thought-provoking themes。 Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

Thank you Grand Central Pub for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own。This is my third Sandra Brown novel, and it was kind of the determining factor for if I wanted to keep reading her books or not。 I first read The Switch, which I thought was okay but not my favorite, and then Blind Tiger, which I really loved。 So, I was kind of 1 for 1 there。Overkill was interesting, and there was a lot going on but I had an easy time following along。 The premise of a girl in a coma was interesting on its Thank you Grand Central Pub for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own。This is my third Sandra Brown novel, and it was kind of the determining factor for if I wanted to keep reading her books or not。 I first read The Switch, which I thought was okay but not my favorite, and then Blind Tiger, which I really loved。 So, I was kind of 1 for 1 there。Overkill was interesting, and there was a lot going on but I had an easy time following along。 The premise of a girl in a coma was interesting on its own, and I would have liked to see more on the medical side to that, since she is both a main part of the story but also takes a back seat。 There is quite a bit of drama throughout, mostly with the over-spoiled frat boy Eban and his early release from jail。I feel like I cannot say too much without giving it all away? Brown did a wonderful job of making Eban such an unlikeable character - there is no redeeming that guy。 The more I learned about him the more I felt like he was scum of the earth。 Zach, on the other hand, was the complete opposite of that and a good juxtaposition。 I liked all the characters in this book, objectively of course, and think they are well written。The story did not feel like it dragged too much, an I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop。 This feels more like a suspense than a thriller (I truly have no idea how it is characterized), but the suspense was so good near the final action of the story。 There is also a bit of angst and tension between Zach and Kate - didn't I say there was a lot going on? In this story there is always something else going on, some character motivations that are yet to be revealed, and I enjoyed being along for the ride。I feel like the way this story is set up I was not super surprised by the "twist," but that isn't a big deal because I enjoyed the rest of the book。 Uh。。。now I am trying to think of what the twist was supposed to be? Maybe I just wasn't surprised because there is so much foreshadowing throughout the story, and with the ways the characters are set up it isn't too difficult to guess their next move。Oh, and there are some spicy scenes near the end of the book。 I skimmed through those because spice is not my thing, but I thought I would mention it。Overall, this was a good book and I liked the suspenseful feeling I had while reading it。 There is a lot going on so there isn't a truly dull part of the story, and there is a semi-happy ending。。。。happy for some but not really for others。 I wanted more of the medical drama, and definitely thought the book would center around it more, but it was still well written and I understood Zachs motivation for his actions。 Blind Tiger is still my favorite Sandra Brown novel, but after this one I am interested in seeing what she writes next。Content warnings: sexual content, rape, assault, gun violence, murder, loss of a loved one, cancer, alcohol / drug abuse, miscarriage 。。。more

But it fits perfectly with what's going on。 The story is a thought provoking one。 It definitely has you wondering what you would do if you were in Zachs shoes。 For the most part it's fast-paced and at times intense。 The bad guy in this story, Eban , was just pure evil but I think he was probably my favorite。 Overall it's a great read in classic Sandra Brown style! Thank you Grand Central Publishing for sharing this book with me! 。。。more

Overkill, by Sandra Brown, is a romantic suspense novel featuring former football legend, Zach Bridger, who is living with the burden of a medical power of attorney over his ex-wife, who is in a vegetative state, and has faced public vilification and her family’s strong resentment。 The other key player is Kate Lennon, an ambitious state prosecutor who has her sites set on punishing the playboy who reduced Zach’s ex-wife to such a state and is out on early release due to his father’s deep pockets Overkill, by Sandra Brown, is a romantic suspense novel featuring former football legend, Zach Bridger, who is living with the burden of a medical power of attorney over his ex-wife, who is in a vegetative state, and has faced public vilification and her family’s strong resentment。 The other key player is Kate Lennon, an ambitious state prosecutor who has her sites set on punishing the playboy who reduced Zach’s ex-wife to such a state and is out on early release due to his father’s deep pockets。 As Kate brings a new piece of critical information to Zach, these two unlikely cohorts team up to find solutions to both of their dilemmas and bring justice to all。 Not only does a relationship brew, but trouble and danger finds them around every turn!Overkill is a high-intensity thriller that is definitely suspenseful and filled with mounting tension, but also riddled with obscenities and rather graphically steamy scenes and commentary。 Most of the characters are reprehensible and quite one-dimensional as well。 Some are utterly obnoxious and odious in every possible way。 It was an element of the story that was a bit hard to get past。 Additionally, the author used the tired old trope of vilifying the man of faith, which I find offensive and overused。 Sandra Brown is an author who isn’t afraid to throw any punches, or kill off her characters, which causes certain elements to be highly unexpected and surprising。 She also writes a quintessentially fast-paced story that makes for a quick read and allows you to fly through the story。 Overkill is entertaining, but clearly a romantic suspense novel, heavy on the steam, as opposed to belonging in the thriller genre。 I loved the narrator of the audio version of Overkill, Kyf Brewer, who has a distinctive voice and has also narrated several of David Baldacci’s books。 In my opinion, he has the perfect voice for the character featured in this story。 Thank you to Grand Central Publishing, Hachette Audio and NetGalley for the advanced audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I have been reading Sandra Brown for over 30 years。 This is the first time I’ve been approved for an early copy and I’m sure my screams of joy were heard world wide。Brown usually has my attention after the first chapter, but Overkill grabbed me from the first paragraph。 An ex football star, reclusive in the NC mountains, but who is still shackled to his past because of his ex wife’s selfishness。 It’s a story about lust, greed, ethics, stupidity, devotion, and pure revenge。I always enjoy Brown’s I have been reading Sandra Brown for over 30 years。 This is the first time I’ve been approved for an early copy and I’m sure my screams of joy were heard world wide。Brown usually has my attention after the first chapter, but Overkill grabbed me from the first paragraph。 An ex football star, reclusive in the NC mountains, but who is still shackled to his past because of his ex wife’s selfishness。 It’s a story about lust, greed, ethics, stupidity, devotion, and pure revenge。I always enjoy Brown’s villains, but Eban Clark is a special kind of slithery bastard。 Kate is determined and knows what she wants。 I felt the sorriest for malleable Theo and liked Bing the best。Overkill has an element for just about every nuance a reader could be looking for。Now, when’s the next stunner??Thanks to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing, and the publicist who made a bookworm’s dream come true!! 。。。more

The storyline was there and it continued to be just there throughout the entire book。 No twists, not much romance like it was supposed to have。 This was a simple adventure crime story that didn’t have much else to it。Probably wouldn’t recommend。 😬

Sandra Brown rocks! She writes stories that shows her depth of imagination and ability to plot a great story。 The story is wonderfully written with characters that fully developed and easy to love or hate。 The two main characters are Zach and Kate。 Zach is a former football player and is a focused and intense character。 Kate is an Assistant District Attorney who is trying to right a wrong。 The plot of the story follows the investigation, a murder, and the burgeoning romance between the two main Sandra Brown rocks! 3。5 stars --- this book was a quick read but ultimately was kind of lackluster。 I was hoping for a great legal drama with a side of romance but it was more "driving around interviewing witnesses"。Eban Clarke was the perfectly-scripted villain with a whole host of enablers (I mean seriously who names their kid Eban and expects good things??) But it was literally my hatred of him that was driving me forward, not my investment of any of the other characters, including our two protagonists。 Thank yo 3。5 stars --- this book was a quick read but ultimately was kind of lackluster。 I was hoping for a great legal drama with a side of romance but it was more "driving around interviewing witnesses"。Eban Clarke was the perfectly-scripted villain with a whole host of enablers (I mean seriously who names their kid Eban and expects good things??)
