Summary

My name is Kazimir Wolfe, people call me "Kaz", except they don’t。 I never use my real name, it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet。

I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job。 So, I move around a lot; working construction or whatever job I can find。 It’s a lonely life。 I don’t let anyone get close。。。people who get close to me end up dead。 Why?

I’m a wizard。 The world’s only wizard, as far as I know。 I don’t have a wand or a sword, and I don’t ride a dragon。 I carry a Glock, and drive around in a beat-up RV with a talking dog。

Yeah。 The talking dog was a surprise to me, too。 Duke is inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old wizard from Babylon, and he’s a good dog, but he is still a dog, and that’s a problem。 Like, he still thinks squirrels are his mortal enemy。 And that I don’t feed him enough。 How did the spirit of a wizard reach across millennia, to our time? I don’t know。

The truth is, I’m not much of a wizard, because there’s not much magic in the world for me to work with。 But there used to be magic。 And magic is coming back, as our world converges with the Nether。

Unless I can stop it。

I loved the Expeditionary Force series, but this book is horrible。R。C。 Bray does everything humanly possible to sell this piece of junk, but it is an impossible task。The story just drags on and on, without a slightest hint of excitement or effort to make things bearable。The dog angle gets old very quickly and after 2-3 chapters it isn't funny anymore, just annoying humorless crap。Do not touch it。 I loved the Expeditionary Force series, but this book is horrible。R。C。 Bray does everything humanly possible to sell this piece of junk, but it is an impossible task。The story just drags on and on, without a slightest hint of excitement or effort to make things bearable。The dog angle gets old very quickly and after 2-3 chapters it isn't funny anymore, just annoying humorless crap。Do not touch it。 。。。more

I love Craig Alanson's other works, primarily The Expidiciary force。 This has the same fun pace and sometimes random gee-wiz information, yet I like how it is used to further explore the character development。 Honestly didn't think I would enjoy a modern fantasy as much as I am, and I will get each book in this series。 I love Craig Alanson's other works, primarily The Expidiciary force。 This has the same fun pace and sometimes random gee-wiz information, yet I like how it is used to further explore the character development。 Honestly didn't think I would enjoy a modern fantasy as much as I am, and I will get each book in this series。 。。。more

No, sorry。。。 I really wanted to like it and I tried for about half the book。I love Expeditionary Force but this feels like a book written for 7 year olds but with adult language。It's the first book in ages that I return (Kindle)。The humorous parts are not funny, more annoying and the "chemistry" is off。。。No, it's sounds good on the summary but execution is flawed unfortunately。。。 No, sorry。。。 I really wanted to like it and I tried for about half the book。I love Expeditionary Force but this feels like a book written for 7 year olds but with adult language。It's the first book in ages that I return (Kindle)。The humorous parts are not funny, more annoying and the "chemistry" is off。。。No, it's sounds good on the summary but execution is flawed unfortunately。。。 。。。more

This was a very positive surprise。I can't even put into words how satisfying it was to finally read a book where the MC has to teach people the modern world and not fail miserably at explaining technology and science because of a ridiculous level of ignorance。In my opinion, the dog and all the doggy jokes overstayed their welcome a bit。 They were very funny at first, and I liked the dog as a character, but they took up too much time in which nothing else was happening, especially because many of This was a very positive surprise。I can't even put into words how satisfying it was to finally read a book where the MC has to teach people the modern world and not fail miserably at explaining technology and science because of a ridiculous level of ignorance。In my opinion, the dog and all the doggy jokes overstayed their welcome a bit。 They were very funny at first, and I liked the dog as a character, but they took up too much time in which nothing else was happening, especially because many of the funny beats were repeated and reiterated countless times。The pacing was a bit slow at times but I connected to the characters enough to be carried across those dry spells without boredom。Most of the bad-guy POVs felt kind of pointless and didn't work very well as a foreshadowing tool。It felt very much like those POVs only existed for this purpose and are not actually about characters that are important to the overarching story。 None of these segments had any impact whatsoever on the main cast。 It was furthermore very blunt and some of their thought processes were very contrived。 I think I would've liked it more if there was just one other POV (apart from the main protagonists) of some semi-bad (maybe surveillance/tech) guy that is caught between the different powers and use him as a vehicle to show the reader the other tidbits of information。At its core, this is just another chosen-one story about the last wizard protagonist having to triumph over the evil forces of hell the nether but it presents in a way that it never feels like a story of that kind。 And while I can not say this with certainty there is a lot of hinting that things are far less black and white and far more complicated behind the scenes。 But because this book is not a complete story but only the first sub-section of a proper story arch very little has actually been confirmed about anything at all really so maybe I am just projecting my own hopes here。To be completely honest this is just a decent book (★★★) but it soothed so many of my pain points that other similar books always seem to torment that I couldn't help but love it。 。。。more

While I love what Craig created with Joe and Skippy in the Expeditionary Force series, and I very much enjoyed the Ascendant trilogy, I think this was a pretty big miss for the Author。The Ascendant trilogy had gravitas, but this is much more schtick。 The author tries to create the chummy, comedic flavor of Expeditionary Force, but that only results in the novel becoming much more of a joke than a serious novel。 The group of characters are so awkward that it really just becomes annoying。I underst While I love what Craig created with Joe and Skippy in the Expeditionary Force series, and I very much enjoyed the Ascendant trilogy, I think this was a pretty big miss for the Author。The Ascendant trilogy had gravitas, but this is much more schtick。 The author tries to create the chummy, comedic flavor of Expeditionary Force, but that only results in the novel becoming much more of a joke than a serious novel。 The group of characters are so awkward that it really just becomes annoying。I understand that Kaz is just a novice magician, but I was really surprised at how Craig did not even try to explain either (1) the background of how Kaz learned he was a magician, or (2) all of the different magical things Kaz could do。 Sure, we see a few things when there's a confrontation, but there was almost no description of what he has tried and accomplished, or has tried and failed, or what he thinks is possible。 Craig was too busy coming up with jokes and silliness to worry about the development of the magic。 Unfortunately, I'm done with this series。 I stuck with it out of respect for Craig's past novels, but I would have quit it earlier if I hadn't read a dozen of his other novels。 I'll wait till Craig goes onto a different topic, or revisits an old story from the Expeditionary Force or the Ascendant trilogy。 While I don't intend to go on, to the extent that Craig reads this, I would caution him not to follow in the footsteps of the Iron Druid series。 Around book 6 or 7, the dog was 50% of the story, and it was way too much to handle。 This story seemed to have about the right amount of dog, but anymore just becomes detrimental to the story。 。。。more

WowThis is so very odd, but good。 Similar style to The Paradise series, although the hero, Duke, is sort of an anti-Skippy。
