Summary

* Running time: 57 minutes *

A bittersweet short-story about mothers, daughters, and the witches' brew of love - and control - that binds them, by the number-one 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'The Handmaid's Tale' and 'The Testaments'。

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may - or may not - be a witch。 A single mother at that。 Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons。 Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress。 The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds。 The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed。 But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted。

New short story released on Amazon Prime, hoping this will be the basis for a new novel or series like the Heart Goes Last, except with witchcraft。。。

Thank you Amazon Publishing for sending me and copy of this book。 This was a quick easy read that resonated with me since I’m about to be the mom to a teenager。 The complexities of that relationship were explored with humor and warmth。 It really is all perspective。 A fun。 Quick read for fans of Ms。 Atwood。

Maggie

I liked it。 A bit eerie, a bit fun。

Ashley Molloy

Ha, love this ending!

Short stories are hard to read because I feel like sometimes you miss out on the ability to jam as much detail + back story in as you can。 Somehow with this one, I don’t feel I needed it。 It was a refreshing read with quirky moments that kept me interested。 I got the “I’m the parent so I’m right” vibes throughout, but in a heartwarming way。 The mother was just trying to protect her daughter。

A gem of a story about mothers and daughters, whether you like stories about witchcraft or not。 Thank you, Margaret Atwood, for an early Mother's Day gift! <3 A gem of a story about mothers and daughters, whether you like stories about witchcraft or not。 Thank you, Margaret Atwood, for an early Mother's Day gift! <3 。。。more

imagination WorksA marvelous journey through the possible things we can enjoy with energetic use of the imagination。Margaret spins a fascinating trip through Filial piety that includes the enjoyment of learning parents as people subject to magical turns of events that apply and remove mystical auras。Good to the last word。

I believe I’m officially done with Ms。 Atwood。 I wanted to get her another shot after the disappointment of The Testaments, I should have known better。 I found absolutely no point in this short story, there was no connection to The Handmaid’s Tale。 I am frustrated with myself that I wasted an Audible credit on this。 Not to mention the frustration of Audible offering this at no cost to new subscribers, what about the loyal users who have been supporting the platform for years?

Sara

A short story by a fantastic author。 I enjoyed it greatly。

Lovely!!!This is a wonderful short story。 I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it。 Many girls picture their mothers as evil and this is the coolest evil mother I’ve met in a story。

I love this storyWell, I don't want to give anything away but just hope her mother never points at you。 It is mostly about going through life with a crazy mother, and I think we all thought our mother was crazy when we were teens。 But she may have been right about this mom。 Loved the story for all the wrong reasons, but it was enjoyable and sad too。 It really is not very describable but I think anyone could find a moment to love inside this story。 Read on witches, read on。 I love this storyWell, I don't want to give anything away but just hope her mother never points at you。 It is mostly about going through life with a crazy mother, and I think we all thought our mother was crazy when we were teens。 But she may have been right about this mom。 Loved the story for all the wrong reasons, but it was enjoyable and sad too。 It really is not very describable but I think anyone could find a moment to love inside this story。 Read on witches, read on。 。。。more

Short story that I got for free from Amazon (otherwise I probably wouldn’t have ever come across this)。 I don’t read short stories too often as it usually takes me a while to connect with the characters。 This story was an interesting one about the dynamic between mother and daughter, and later the daughter and her own children。 The story gives you enough to know a bit about their interactions but leaves a large part up to the reader’s imagination。

Sheila

Mothers and daughters。 Lovely story about the things we tell children to keep them safe and protected。 Tender, good characters, deft touches of humour。 Great Atwood。

A girl growing up in the 1950’s with a mother who MIGHT be a witch。 By nature I don’t love short stories- but this was entertaining enough。 It spoke to women through the ages and how we see the world and how that world perceives us。 Atwood always does a good job of making her reader think。

Luisa Rossina Villani

What a nice short story! It manages to include many of the myths and misnomers used to execute women in the past, and use them in a contemporary story about the complicated situation of being a single parent。

Jackie

A modern witchGreat short story。 As usual a great storyteller at work。 A story of a young girl and her mother, who is just a bit odd yet loving。

Lady Jane

It was a fun and lighthearted Saturday morning read。 We will never know if the narrator’s mom was just quirky or really a witch, but we could see how the cycles of mother-daughter relationships repeat themselves every generation。
