Summary

Art galleries and casinos, mansions and brothels, billionaires and thieves—only James Patterson could create a triple-cross this decadent and suspenseful。

Imagine everyone’s surprise when Carter von Oehson, a sophomore in Dr。 Dylan Reinhart’s Abnormal Psychology class, posts on Instagram that he plans to kill himself。 24 hours later and still no one has seen him。

Release the hounds。 A massive search ensues。 But when Carter’s sailboat rolls in with the tide without him or anyone else on it, the worst seems to be confirmed。 He really did it 。 。 。 Or did he?

The one person convinced he’s still alive is his father, Mathias von Oehson, founder and CEO of the world’s largest hedge fund。 But what Mathias knows and how he knows it would ultimately reveal a secret so damaging that it would be as if he were committing suicide himself。 There’s no way he can go to the police。 But there’s still someone he can turn to。

Dylan now finds himself wrapped up in multi-million-dollar secrets and danger and it’s going to take every bit of his wit, and the brilliant and headstrong NYPD Detective, Elizabeth Needham, to stay ahead of both his enemy 。 。 。 and his employer。

Melissa The Reading Nerd

In typical Patterson fashion, this book was fast paced and chock full of twists and turns, which I am always here for。 I enjoyed this book, and I enjoyed the audiobook (thanks to my library) as the narrator did a good job reading the story。

Another great read! Loved it! The series was great! Love Dylan and all the characters!

I am halfway through this book and I'm starting to get bored with it。 I was interested in the first half but then the direction of the story changed。 I feel the story is now weak and doesn't tie in with the beginning of the book all that well。 I will continue to read this to see where it goes from here。 Right now, its putting me to sleep。 I am halfway through this book and I'm starting to get bored with it。 I was interested in the first half but then the direction of the story changed。 I feel the story is now weak and doesn't tie in with the beginning of the book all that well。 I will continue to read this to see where it goes from here。 Right now, its putting me to sleep。 。。。more

There was so much double-dealing going on in this book, it was very confusing。 The main gist involved a Monet painting stolen from the von Oehson family by the Nazis。 During the war, it ended up in Hungary。 Somehow Mathias von Oehson got it back and hid it in his home。 His son owed gambling debts and gave the painting to the man he owed。 It ended up with mob boss Frank Brunetti。 He refused to see it back to Mathias。 The Hungary embassy got involved and agreed to buy it from Brunetti。 The real pa There was so much double-dealing going on in this book, it was very confusing。 The main gist involved a Monet painting stolen from the von Oehson family by the Nazis。 During the war, it ended up in Hungary。 Somehow Mathias von Oehson got it back and hid it in his home。 His son owed gambling debts and gave the painting to the man he owed。 It ended up with mob boss Frank Brunetti。 He refused to see it back to Mathias。 The Hungary embassy got involved and agreed to buy it from Brunetti。 The real painting was swapped for a fake。 When the embassy wired the money to Brunetti, Mathias hacked into the bank and took another $5 billion。 Hungary wanted it back and sent an assassin to take out Brunetti and von Oehson。 Then the CIA got involved。Hard to tell who's who and what's what! 。。。more

Another brilliant book。 Can you outfox an ex CIA Agent turned professor?Should your beliefs outweigh your duty to your parter snd child。A fake Monet, a fake kidnapped suicide, a A link to Hungary and Russian IntelligenceRead and find out?

I enjoyed this fast pace book。 All Dylan wants to do is teach his class at Yale, enjoy the time with his husband and daughter and live life。 Then one of his students takes his own life。 His world changes and he is pulled back into his old life of a CIA agent。 Danger and secrets abound。

3rd Dylan Reinhart character book, slow in the middle but picks up and a good ending。

Lorinda

Really enjoy this series。 Patterson/Roughan work well together creating an intricate plot wonderfully。

Maya vora

I thought the beginning was amazing and really drew me in but as they Introduced different characters I got a little lost。 I was also unaware that this was in a series

Jeff

Not great。

Cross and double cross。 This book is full of surprises。 You start off thinking it's about a kidnapping, but it's about something entirely different。 The characters are a lot of fun with their rich personalities and quirks。 There are some action scenes, but it is mainly a psychological battle of wits。 Cross and double cross。 This book is full of surprises。 You start off thinking it's about a kidnapping, but it's about something entirely different。 The characters are a lot of fun with their rich personalities and quirks。 There are some action scenes, but it is mainly a psychological battle of wits。 。。。more

Mediocre at best,

Marlan

This was tough。 As a Patterson book, it didn’t seem to have usual smooth and easy flow。 Maybe it was tough to pull off the story but I found it lacked what is typically present in a JP novel。

Gail Nebl

Disappointing

Robin Allison

Not my favorite Patterson book, although I do like the characters。

Debbie Tollefson

While I enjoyed the first two books in the INSTINCT series, this one was just ridiculous and irritating。 Total waste of time

2。5 starsThere was too much going on in this one, too many different goals and too many different mob bosses, art dealers, and billionaire problems to all fit in a 350 page book。 I never felt like I was on the edge of my seat, especially considering this was meant to be a thriller。 The main character lacked gumption, he felt like a Mary Sue, and the inclusivity in this book felt forced and pandering。 This book will probably live in my To Donate pile, unfortunately。

BROOKS BASH

Very Disappointing。。。stopped reading it after the second Chapter。

Laurel

High 3。85 and a half Liked all the rich people chaebol drama and the criminal underworld。 So many characters and their individual motivations interweaving — until BOOM!

I have read so many of James Patterson’s books & series I had forgotten about this one & will definitely go back & re-read the first one & get around to reading the second one because I really enjoyed this one。 Dylan is a psychology professor but he has worked for the CIA in the past & has connections there。 This story involves mob bosses, a stolen painting & an apparent suicide but the boy’s father sees his Instagram message & believes his son is still alive & enlists Dylan to look after him。 I I have read so many of James Patterson’s books & series I had forgotten about this one & will definitely go back & re-read the first one & get around to reading the second one because I really enjoyed this one。 Dylan is a psychology professor but he has worked for the CIA in the past & has connections there。 This story involves mob bosses, a stolen painting & an apparent suicide but the boy’s father sees his Instagram message & believes his son is still alive & enlists Dylan to look after him。 I like that James Patterson has short chapters in his books。 Once you get started on them, if the story is really good, it’s a fast read & will keep your attention。 。。。more

another ClassicThis episode with Dylan Reinhardt is another classic, just the right amount of plot twists to keep you on your toes but not so many as to make you lost!

Good story。 When a college student from a wealthy family disappears, there is some evidence he may have committed suicide, but his father doesn't believe it。 He knows there's more to the story。 Kidnappings, stolen paintings, the Russian Mob all play parts in this saga。 Good story。 When a college student from a wealthy family disappears, there is some evidence he may have committed suicide, but his father doesn't believe it。 He knows there's more to the story。 Kidnappings, stolen paintings, the Russian Mob all play parts in this saga。 。。。more

twists and turns and lots of funHope there’s another with these characters planned。 I’ve liked all their collaborations。 I liked the ending with all the characters just deserts。

Nancy Burnett

a FUN read。 Is the story improbable I don’t know。 Most people know mixing a little truth with fiction increases the chance that the fiction is more truth。 I enjoyed the story line the interaction of all the players and the wrap up

Cris

I love books where the main character apparently is a psychologist lol。 I do enjoy the smart ass humor too! I sure do hope this series continues!
