Summary

Ryan Holiday's bestselling trilogy--The Obstacle Is the WayEgo is the Enemy, and Stillness is the Key--captivated professional athletes, CEOs, politicians, and entrepreneurs and helped bring Stoicism to millions of readers。 Now, in the first book of an exciting new series on the cardinal virtues of ancient philosophy, Holiday explores the most foundational virtue of all: Courage。

Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear。 The most repeated phrase in the Bible is "Be not afraid。" The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror。 It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you。 Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what's right, to do what's needed, to do what is true。 And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom。

In Courage Is Calling, Ryan Holiday breaks down the elements of fear, an expression of cowardice, the elements of courage, an expression of bravery, and lastly, the elements of heroism, an expression of valor。 Through engaging stories about historic and contemporary leaders, including Charles De Gaulle, Florence Nightingale, and Dr。 Martin Luther King Jr。, Holiday shows you how to conquer fear and practice courage in your daily life。

You'll also delve deep into the moral dilemmas and courageous acts of lesser-known, but equally as important, figures from ancient and modern history, such as Helvidius Priscus, a Roman Senator who stood his ground against emperor Vespasian, even in the face of death; Frank Serpico, a former New York City Police Department Detective who exposed police corruption; and Frederick Douglass and a slave named Nelly, whose fierce resistance against her captors inspired his own crusade to end slavery。

In a world in which fear runs rampant--when people would rather stand on the sidelines than speak out against injustice, go along with convention than bet on themselves, and turn a blind eye to the ugly realities of modern life--we need courage more than ever。 We need the courage of whistleblowers and risk takers。 We need the courage of activists and adventurers。 We need the courage of writers who speak the truth--and the courage of leaders to listen。

We need you to step into the arena and fight。

By the time I got to the end of this book, I didn’t want it to end。 The stories of courage are valuable precisely because they are about the courage to stick one’s neck out for others。 This book challenged me in many ways to be a better leader and will join multiple other books by Ryan Holiday in my “reread every year” list。

I love all of Ryan Holiday's work。 This book is no different。 Easy to read。 Great lessons。 And a wonderful, personal chapter at the end。 Read this。 It will not disappoint。 I love all of Ryan Holiday's work。 This book is no different。 Easy to read。 Great lessons。 And a wonderful, personal chapter at the end。 Read this。 It will not disappoint。 。。。more

This book was great。 It’s not necessarily groundbreaking, but it is a collection of inspiring figures and stories and the courage they applied to achieve great things。 I am a fan of Ryan and his YouTube channel, and this is a great accompaniment。 I like that the chapters are all in small bite sized pieces, I regularly replayed chapters I enjoyed and found particularly meaningful。 You could pick any one of them and find something motivational to start your day。

As always, Ryan Holiday presents a great argument and backs it up with relevant and interesting examples。 His examples are extremely varied and inclusive, and they suit the message well。 It was interesting to me that the book felt a little different, more forceful, than the normal for Ryan's books, though it worked in a book about courage。 I am excited to read the rest of the Four Virtues series as they are released。 As always, Ryan Holiday presents a great argument and backs it up with relevant and interesting examples。 His examples are extremely varied and inclusive, and they suit the message well。 It was interesting to me that the book felt a little different, more forceful, than the normal for Ryan's books, though it worked in a book about courage。 I am excited to read the rest of the Four Virtues series as they are released。 。。。more

I wish there were many more examples shared of Mr Holiday and his contemporaries practicing courage in their daily lives。 。。。more

Courage is Calling is the first of four planned books on each of the Stoic virtues – courage, wisdom, justice, and temperance。 Ryan continues to deliver great insight on how to apply courage to everyday life。 As society continues to evolve, the need for courage is more important than ever。 Without courage, the other virtues don’t become actions。 While it remains to be seen if this four book cycle will march Ryan’s excellent trilogy of Ego is the Enemy, The Obstacle is the Way, and Stillness is t Courage is Calling is the first of four planned books on each of the Stoic virtues – courage, wisdom, justice, and temperance。 Ryan continues to deliver great insight on how to apply courage to everyday life。 As society continues to evolve, the need for courage is more important than ever。 Without courage, the other virtues don’t become actions。 While it remains to be seen if this four book cycle will march Ryan’s excellent trilogy of Ego is the Enemy, The Obstacle is the Way, and Stillness is the Key, Courage is Calling is a powerful start。 。。。more

This is the first book in a new 4 book series from Ryan Holiday about the 4 cardinal virtues: Courage, Justice, Temperance and Wisdom。 It's pretty similar to his 3 book series about Stoicism in that there are a lot of very short chapters and in each of it there is a small historical anecdote about it。 This is the first book in a new 4 book series from Ryan Holiday about the 4 cardinal virtues: Courage, Justice, Temperance and Wisdom。 It's pretty similar to his 3 book series about Stoicism in that there are a lot of very short chapters and in each of it there is a small historical anecdote about it。 。。。more

Having read all of Ryan Holiday's previous pieces of work, I felt that this first book in the Stoic series really lacked depth in the area of Stoicism。 Of course, Holiday is well-read, and this is reflected in every chapter with the stories he tells from the history books he has read。 Unfortunately, most of the book seems like a drag and I hope that Holiday steps up the game in the second book for the Stoic series。 Nevertheless, two stars for Holiday's prolific writing style and short, concise c Having read all of Ryan Holiday's previous pieces of work, I felt that this first book in the Stoic series really lacked depth in the area of Stoicism。 Of course, Holiday is well-read, and this is reflected in every chapter with the stories he tells from the history books he has read。 Unfortunately, most of the book seems like a drag and I hope that Holiday steps up the game in the second book for the Stoic series。 Nevertheless, two stars for Holiday's prolific writing style and short, concise chapters。 。。。more

Excellent book, concise and to the point with colorful details that were novel to me regarding some historical events。

"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point。" C。S。 LewisNear the end of the book, Holiday includes this inspiring quote from C。S。 Lewis, and for me it sums up the point of the entire book。 The world right now is suffering from a lack of courage, a lack of following through on other virtues and values you hold at the testing point。 This book about courage is a call to action in the public sphere, but also a call to action in the private sphere -- a "Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point。" C。S。 LewisNear the end of the book, Holiday includes this inspiring quote from C。S。 Lewis, and for me it sums up the point of the entire book。 The world right now is suffering from a lack of courage, a lack of following through on other virtues and values you hold at the testing point。 This book about courage is a call to action in the public sphere, but also a call to action in the private sphere -- a call to develop courage in your own family, your own heart, your own career。Here are just a few of the highlights I made going through it:"Foresee the worst to perform the best。 When fear is defined, it can be defeated。 When downside is articulated, it can be weighed against upside。 When the wolves are counted, there are fewer of them。 Mountains turn out to be molehills, monsters turn out just to be men。""Don't worry about whether things will be hard。 Because they will be。 Instead, focus on the fact that these things will help you。 This is why you needn't fear them。""We go through life in two ways。 We choose between effective truths: that we have the ability to change our situation, or that we are at the mercy of the situations in which we find ourselves。 We can rely on luck 。 。 。 or cause and effect。""The existential vacuum that began in the twentieth century continues to suck us into its dark maw。 Religion, patriotism, industry–each day, collective belief in these pillars of humanity weakens。 Just look at what we tell ourselves about history。 Do we choose to see ourselves as the latest descendants in a long line of ancestors who have been struggling valiantly and against the odds, toward a better world? Or are we the bastard children of irredeemable racists, pillagers, and monsters? Are we the future of humanity–progress–or are we a plague upon the earth?"A much needed book, now and in the future。 For a non-fiction book, one of the highest compliments that you can pay to an author is that it somehow changes your thoughts or actions。 This book should do that for a lot of readers。This is my favorite book that I have read of Ryan Holiday's and one that I will be buying multiple copies of to give out。 I read a lot of books, but rarely re-read anything。 This one will go on my shelf to revisit down the road。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

A collection of some of the "greatest hits" of courage throughout history。 Mr。 Holiday has compiled an excellent reference for anyone looking for examples of courageous action that can inspire our own daily experiences。 Of special note is the afterword, detailing what I would consider the inspiration for this book。 Mr。 Holiday talks about his time at American Apparel and the decisions he could have made but didn't and has been haunted by ever since。A great addition to the growing library of stoi A collection of some of the "greatest hits" of courage throughout history。 Mr。 Holiday has compiled an excellent reference for anyone looking for examples of courageous action that can inspire our own daily experiences。 Of special note is the afterword, detailing what I would consider the inspiration for this book。 Mr。 Holiday talks about his time at American Apparel and the decisions he could have made but didn't and has been haunted by ever since。A great addition to the growing library of stoic philosophy for our modern times。 。。。more

I bought this new Ryan Holiday book on launch day and managed to finish it。 One of the great things about Ryan’s books is that they aren’t insanely long (unlike his mentor Robert Greene’s books lol)。 If you’re a fan of Ryan Holiday, you’ll enjoy this book。 Much like his other books, he uses figures from throughout history up to modern times to motivate and inspire。 This book is filled with various acts of courage, and I was glad to hear that this is the first part of a series of four virtues。 I I bought this new Ryan Holiday book on launch day and managed to finish it。 One of the great things about Ryan’s books is that they aren’t insanely long (unlike his mentor Robert Greene’s books lol)。 If you’re a fan of Ryan Holiday, you’ll enjoy this book。 Much like his other books, he uses figures from throughout history up to modern times to motivate and inspire。 This book is filled with various acts of courage, and I was glad to hear that this is the first part of a series of four virtues。 I have some criticisms that I wrote about in a blog, but it’s mainly just personal preference with the type of books I prefer。 But this book accomplished for me exactly what Ryan was aiming for, which was to give me some inspiration and motivation to act more courageously。 And the afterword he provided at the end was extremely introspective, and I respected and appreciated it。My blog about the book: https://www。therewiredsoul。com/blog/r。。。 。。。more
