Summary

From bestselling and award-winning author Sara Pennypacker comes the long-awaited sequel to Pax; this is a gorgeously crafted, utterly compelling novel about chosen families and the healing power of love。

It’s been a year since Peter and his pet fox, Pax, have seen each other。 Once inseparable, they now lead very different lives。 Pax and his mate, Bristle, have welcomed a litter of kits they must protect in a dangerous world。 Meanwhile Peter—newly orphaned after the war, wracked with guilt and loneliness—leaves his adopted home with Vola to join the Water Warriors, a group of people determined to heal the land from the scars of the war。

When one of Pax's kits falls desperately ill, he turns to the one human he knows he can trust。 And no matter how hard Peter tries to harden his broken heart, love keeps finding a way in。 Now both boy and fox find themselves on journeys toward home, healing—and each other, once again。

I got this book on NetGalley。I liked the first one。 It was sad, made me cry but ended the way I thought it should。 No need for another story。 But I was wrong。 I needed this。 I needed to know what happened to Peter and Pax。 And boy did I cry。 And yes, this one ended the way I thought it should。

Sara Pennypacker has an amazing talent for building a character that attaches to your soul。 Just as I could not peel Pax from the clutches of my heart, Journey Home is equally tucked up in a tight embrace。 The immense connection you gain through the words have you blubbering through dark and glowing with pride in the light。 Love love love everything Pax… I want more!!!!

Fabulous conclusion to this duology! The ecology element really added dimension to the story。 Pushing Peter out of his comfort zone while addressing his issues with loss also created layers of character development that matured this story furthering it’s appeal to older age groups。

I absolutely loved this book! While reading it I kept thinking of all the rich conversations I would have with my students if I were still in the classroom。 Like the first book, Pax, this book draws you in and tears at your heart。 It is perfectly suited for a read aloud because of the cliffhangers and great moral points to discuss。 If you have an opportunity to read this, read it and then share it with a young person in your life。

Arhh, I so loved this book and the ending it’s given to the story of Peter and Pax, but you never know there could be another (I hope so)。The story picks up on Peter who is now 13 years old a year later, still struggling with grief。 He goes on his own journey to come to terms with it。 The story alternates chapters with Pax his old friend and his family。It’s so beautifully written and has an environmental theme running through it。 Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced co Arhh, I so loved this book and the ending it’s given to the story of Peter and Pax, but you never know there could be another (I hope so)。The story picks up on Peter who is now 13 years old a year later, still struggling with grief。 He goes on his own journey to come to terms with it。 The story alternates chapters with Pax his old friend and his family。It’s so beautifully written and has an environmental theme running through it。 Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy, a must read sequel with a satisfying ending。 。。。more

Pennypacker gives us an intimate view of Peter's attempts to make a new life as well as the world of the fox。 As she did in Pax, the animal characterization is beautifully done。 Teachers will want to use this one as a read aloud。 Thank you to Balzer + Bray and Edelweiss+ for a DRC。 Since the ARC did not have the finished illustrations by Jon Klassen, I look forward to getting ahold of a published copy to enjoy the full book experience。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Just like Pax #1, this is a tender story about a boy grappling with the overwhelming sadness in his life。 It is through the love of an animal that he sees his way to love。 He is reunited with Pax and it makes his life turn around in an unexpected way。 SO worth reading and sharing with a young reader。 One of my very favorite two books for kids at this age。

Pax was an absolute favorite read of mine! The sequel: Pax, Journey Home did not disappoint! Returning to the alternating POVs between Pax and Peter was like returning to spend time with old friends。 Their stories were every bit as endearing and engaging。 Sara Pennypacker uses her characters to reveal such beautiful sentiments and truths abut life。 I didn't want this book to end。 I enjoyed every page! I received an eARC courtesy of Balzer+Bray via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review。I didn't know that I needed more Pax, but I apparently did。 This will not disappoint kids who loved the first one。 It was nice to see Peter and Pax a year later as they continue to grow and learn。 So very good。For Libraries: A must buy! EARC provided by Edelweiss PlusLoved! The author did a fantastic job of making this a book that stands alone as well as one that follows up after Pax (for those who read that)。 It had been a while for me, but I was instantly reminded of why I enjoyed Pax so- I loved the equal treatment of Peter and Pax’s journeys told through such lovely storytelling。 Lots for readers to discuss as and after this is read- so be sure to add this to your school or classroom library。

Before I started this book, I had to read the first one。 I had owned a copy of Pax for well over a year, but never got around to reading it。 Getting the chance to read its sequel was the push I needed to get it read。 And, after reading Pax and Pax, Journey Home, I would say it was worth it。While Pax was a story about letting go, Pax, Journey Home, is a story about holding on。 Just like the first book, this one gives very little in terms of setting, so that the themes can resonate better with peo Before I started this book, I had to read the first one。 I had owned a copy of Pax for well over a year, but never got around to reading it。 Getting the chance to read its sequel was the push I needed to get it read。 And, after reading Pax and Pax, Journey Home, I would say it was worth it。While Pax was a story about letting go, Pax, Journey Home, is a story about holding on。 Just like the first book, this one gives very little in terms of setting, so that the themes can resonate better with people across time and space。 (Personally, while I can see the intention behind "this place is undefined and thus these events could happen anywhere," to me it often felt more like "this place is undefined and thus these events have happened no where)。 This book was also pretty sad for the vast majority of it - I suppose for an adult who can see the moral coming from the first couple of chapters it feels like it lingers too long in the misunderstandings, mistakes, and sadness, but there's a strong possibility that children reading it won't see it that way。 I could easily see children, and even adults, who have been through multiple loses like Peter reacting in a way similar to him, so to see him learn throughout his journey in this book would be important。 In conclusion, while this wasn't a book that resonated with me personally, I am certain that there is an audience out there who will connect strongly with it。 。。。more

I was able to get my hands on a few #ARCs from #netgalley, and I am over the moon excited about this release。 I read Pax with my students last year, and they had an incredible response to the story。 For me, Pax was enlightening, as a terrific, tragic, coming of age story, full of trauma and learning how to start over。 I loved it and I loved sharing it with students, but it was one of those stories that left melancholy in our hearts and had us wondering, “what happens next?” Well, now I know, and I was able to get my hands on a few #ARCs from #netgalley, and I am over the moon excited about this release。 I read Pax with my students last year, and they had an incredible response to the story。 For me, Pax was enlightening, as a terrific, tragic, coming of age story, full of trauma and learning how to start over。 I loved it and I loved sharing it with students, but it was one of those stories that left melancholy in our hearts and had us wondering, “what happens next?” Well, now I know, and WOW。 This book is beautiful and sad and hopeful and brings our incredible characters full circle。 The story is still told in two view points, going back and forth between Peter and Pax, who now live different lives。 But when a series of events sends them on a path, the characters find themselves reliving and revisiting moments from their past, when the two were the best of friends。 This journey leads them to growth, self-discovery, and ultimately, a road through trauma and to healing。 This is beautiful in every way, #sarahpennypacker, I’m so grateful for this art you gave to the world。 Thank you for your ideas, that led to thoughts, that led to this story。 Thank you for revisiting the world of Pax and Peter and allowing your readers to join。 I cannot wait to share this book with everyone。 。。。more

I couldn’t wait to finish the book to find pit what happened to humans and foxes alike。 While this continues the original story it is also a stand alone about grieving, guilt, loss and trying to cut oneself off from future hurts and how healing can take place of those who care for you are patient, undemanding and kind and you are willing to let that sliver of life in

As an elementary librarian, I naturally read stacks and stacks of children’s books。 Sometimes they seem to blur together, but the first installment of Pax and Peter’s story will likely forever be in my top ten list for which there is much competition。 I was an emotional wreck after finishing it and thought about it for months。 And yes, apparently that is something my brain enjoys。 Lol。 So I literally squealed when I first saw the sequel…。and then slowly but surely the doubt crept in。 Pax was per As an elementary librarian, I naturally read stacks and stacks of children’s books。 Sometimes they seem to blur together, but the first installment of Pax and Peter’s story will likely forever be in my top ten list for which there is much competition。 I was an emotional wreck after finishing it and thought about it for months。 And yes, apparently that is something my brain enjoys。 Lol。 So I literally squealed when I first saw the sequel…。and then slowly but surely the doubt crept in。 Pax was perfect。 Couldn’t a sequel completely ruin it all? I was hesitant but had to know how the two guys were doing。 We meet them again just a year later。 Pax has a family now and Peter is doing everything he can to NOT embrace meaningful, familial relationships because of all the loss he’s endured。 He needs healing。 Pax’s little one needs help。 And the two meet again。 This sequel didn’t affect me like the original, but I am very glad I read it。 It was beautifully written and I do feel better paced。 I was a bit disappointed in the resolution, but I also know it was sensible。 I appreciate the ARC from NetGalley and the publisher。 。。。more

It was the sequel that I didn’t know I needed to read。 I love the characters of Peter & Pax and revisiting their world felt like a reunion。 I appreciated that the story took up right where it left off。 However, a new reader won’t be too confused because their shared history is woven through the narration。 I really love a middle grade fiction so full of feeling & emotion。 Kids deserve a chance to learn how to feel and Pax is the perfect primer。Thank you to NetGalley for and ARC of PAC, Journey Ho It was the sequel that I didn’t know I needed to read。 I love the characters of Peter & Pax and revisiting their world felt like a reunion。 I appreciated that the story took up right where it left off。 However, a new reader won’t be too confused because their shared history is woven through the narration。 I really love a middle grade fiction so full of feeling & emotion。 Kids deserve a chance to learn how to feel and Pax is the perfect primer。Thank you to NetGalley for and ARC of PAC, Journey Home by Sara Pennypacker。 Publishing date: September 7, 2021。 。。。more

I think over all I would only give this 3 stars。I'm struggling to put into words how I feel about the second installment of Pax。 I might just have to ramble a little。 Both Pax and Peter are a year older, but I felt like Peter was too mature for a 13 year old with outdoor knowledge and feelings? That is just my opinion。 Pax felt more real to me then Peter because of this。 But I also thought Pax lack in some knowledge that didn't quite seem logical? I honestly wasn't sure how Pennypacker could continue the beautiful and heart wrenching story of Pax, but the Journey Home was absolutely amazing。 The book was healing, friendship and discovery all rolled into one beautiful package。 The way that Peter and Pax's story continues to intertwine and extend was amazing。 The author has the exceptional ability of writing from two perspectives simultaneously。 A wonderful follow up to Pax。 Well done。 I honestly wasn't sure how Pennypacker could continue the beautiful and heart wrenching story of Pax, but the Journey Home was absolutely amazing。 The book was healing, friendship and discovery all rolled into one beautiful package。 The way that Peter and Pax's story continues to intertwine and extend was amazing。 The author has the exceptional ability of writing from two perspectives simultaneously。 A wonderful follow up to Pax。 Well done。 。。。more

This sequel was nothing short of superb - anyone reading this will fall in love with the value of sacrifice and learning to accept that we all need love and companionship。 Pax’s ability as an animal to recognize that his kit needs Peter to survive demonstrates a humanity in animals we fail to acknowledge。 Although this is fiction, this story and it’s values are nothing but truth no matter what species you are。

Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC of this title。 Pax: Journey Home picks up around a year after Pax ended。 We learn quickly that Peter is still living with Vola, doing his own penance and learning woodworking from her。 The war that featured heavily in the last book is over, and Peter must come to terms with everything he has lost, With a heart full of grief, he lashes out at Vola and leaves her farm to journey back to his home, where he will scatter his father's ashes and, so he p Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for an ARC of this title。 Pax: Journey Home picks up around a year after Pax ended。 We learn quickly that Peter is still living with Vola, doing his own penance and learning woodworking from her。 The war that featured heavily in the last book is over, and Peter must come to terms with everything he has lost, With a heart full of grief, he lashes out at Vola and leaves her farm to journey back to his home, where he will scatter his father's ashes and, so he plans, live away from the rest of society。 Meanwhile, back at the Reservoir, Pax, Bristle, and Runt welcome several new members to their family。 When humans come near their land, Pax knows he must act, Setting off on a journey towards his home, he must himself negotiate the choices he has made and decide once and for all if he will remain in the wild, or go find his boy。 What I loved about this story:1) More context about the war, setting, time, and place。 The first novel felt oddly timeless, in that I couldn't really tell WHEN it was set, or even WHERE。 This book provides a few more clues that give a little more context into establishing time and place。2) The allegories for grief are on point, For any middle school kid who has lost someone, this story will resonate very closely, and I can see it becoming a classic for YS librarians and teachers to hand out to students who have lost someone。3) The storytelling is very well done, just as it was in the first novel。What I didn't love about this story: 1) While we do get more clues as to time/location/ context, there is still so much WHY about the war。 We learn there was a resistance (?) and it's over now (Who won? What was being fought over? How did this impact their lives? We will never know,) there are still a lot of questions left on the table。 2) It's probably my adult lens, but I had so many questions。 We're just gonna let a 13-year-old boy wander off into the woods after pitching a fit, huh? No one's going to check on him? We seem to have re-established pre-war staples such as thrift stores, environmental projects, and walky-talkies, but。。。。 no cell phones? No mail? IS ANYONE LOOKING AFTER THIS CHILD?!?Overall though, I think this sequel was worth the read, and I will definitely be recommending it to my kids as a librarian。 。。。more
