Summary

There are Heroes - and then there are Greek Heroes。

Few mere mortals have ever embarked on such bold and heart-stirring adventures, overcome myriad monstrous perils, or outwitted scheming vengeful gods, quite as stylishly and triumphantly as Greek heroes。

In this companion to his bestselling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales。 Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece。 See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples。 Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera。

Filled with white-knuckle chases and battles, impossible puzzles and riddles, acts of base cowardice and real bravery, not to mention murders and selfless sacrifices, Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best。

The second in Fry's trilogy (?) bringing the ancient Greek and Roman mythology back to life。 Very well done。 I have been a fan of G&R mythology since I was a boy, and Fry's reinterpretation is marvelous。 For the audiobook version, the narrator is terrific as well。 The second in Fry's trilogy (?) bringing the ancient Greek and Roman mythology back to life。 Very well done。 I have been a fan of G&R mythology since I was a boy, and Fry's reinterpretation is marvelous。 For the audiobook version, the narrator is terrific as well。 。。。more

Great second Greek myth book from Stephen Fry! Great as an audiobook。

So, I dived into the second of Stephen Fry's Mythological Greek retellings。 Mythos, the first of the series, was great to read, but I decided to listen to this second instalment in an audiobook format, as Stephen Fry narrates it himself。As Greek Mythology can have the tendency of being slightly repetitive, I found the tail end of Mythos to be a bit dry, but still really enjoyed it。 Heroes is entertaining from beginning to end, and listening to it makes all the difference, in my opinion。 Fry brin So, I dived into the second of Stephen Fry's Mythological Greek retellings。 Mythos, the first of the series, was great to read, but I decided to listen to this second instalment in an audiobook format, as Stephen Fry narrates it himself。As Greek Mythology can have the tendency of being slightly repetitive, I found the tail end of Mythos to be a bit dry, but still really enjoyed it。 Heroes is entertaining from beginning to end, and listening to it makes all the difference, in my opinion。 Fry brings his usual energy and enlivens his witty prose in a way that is so, so entertaining, with his subtle inflections adding so much more humour, whilst also cleverly highlighting the important parts of each story。Whilst Fry is a very funny person, he is also incredibly insightful。 As well as informing the reader in an entertaining way about the stories of the Greek heroes that he talks about, he also provides another level to the reading experience。 He adds his own subjective opinions on what is important in the story, what it signifies, and also how these could relate to our modern day culture and how we live our lives。I will write out a full review in the coming weeks when my opinions have more time to form, but I have to say that the final chapter was wonderful。 It was actually magical。 I was just blown away by Fry's description of why he loves these myths, and their importance to him, and why they should be key to our lives。 It was amazing, and really summarised everything that Fry can bring to his story。Full Review to Come 。。。more

Stephen Fry and Greek Mythology is a match made by the 12 Olympians。 Heroes is the second book in Stephen Fry's series of Greek Mythology retellings, this time following the mortals that have cemented their place in history for their heroic deeds。 Again I listed to the audiobook narrated by Fry and can't give it anything but 5 stars。 Each story is perfectly paced and narrated in a way I think only Stephen Fry can。 There is a lot of information in this edition for example, I have seen people comp Stephen Fry and Greek Mythology is a match made by the 12 Olympians。 Heroes is the second book in Stephen Fry's series of Greek Mythology retellings, this time following the mortals that have cemented their place in history for their heroic deeds。 Again I listed to the audiobook narrated by Fry and can't give it anything but 5 stars。 Each story is perfectly paced and narrated in a way I think only Stephen Fry can。 There is a lot of information in this edition for example, I have seen people complain that the 12 labours of Hercules could have been explained in more detail。 However I had no issues with the fact it was as brief as it was, I feel like this series is a great introduction to Greek Mythology and if you want to dive deeper into the details and variations after reading this you can。 If we were to go into every detail and variation of Hercules' labours that could be a book within itself。 There isn't much more I can say that I've not already said in my previous posts about Mythos and Troy。 If you like Greek Mythology and you love to listen to the sound of Stephen Fry's voice this is for you。 。。。more

Fantastic book and continuation of Mythos。

Interessant maar minder goed dan het eerste boek uit de reeks。 Een overvloed van Griekse namen zorgen er voor dat het soms iets te veel wordt。。。

I quite enjoyed this but struggled to keep up with who was who。 I did like Stephen Fry's voice but wish he had interjected even more。 For me, this was a pick it up, read a section and put it down for a while kind of book。 I quite enjoyed this but struggled to keep up with who was who。 I did like Stephen Fry's voice but wish he had interjected even more。 For me, this was a pick it up, read a section and put it down for a while kind of book。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。I absolutely love & appreciate this series that Stephen Fry has graciously researched and put together。 Mr。 Fry makes Greek Mythology so approachable and funny at times。 This series really helps to fill my knowledge gaps and helps me understand how everything is connected。 Heroes breaks down some of the most popular & well-known heroes of greek mythology *think Hercules & Jason)。 Though not quite as engaging as Mythos, it was still a wonderful book & a great resource。 Can't wait f 3。5 rounded up。I absolutely love & appreciate this series that Stephen Fry has graciously researched and put together。 Mr。 Fry makes Greek Mythology so approachable and funny at times。 This series really helps to fill my knowledge gaps and helps me understand how everything is connected。 Heroes breaks down some of the most popular & well-known heroes of greek mythology *think Hercules & Jason)。 Though not quite as engaging as Mythos, it was still a wonderful book & a great resource。 Can't wait for "Troy" next。。。。 I hope he continues this series on past the Odyssey to at least the Aeneid and a few others! 。。。more

Long story short, I loved this。 I was familiar with most of the stories of the Greek heroes, but only the highlights。 Fry narrates the rise (and often, fall) of Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, Jason, Orpheus, Atalanta, Oedipus and Theseus, and attempts to present all of it in context which makes for interesting and amusing reading。 Heroes is more coherent than its predecessor Mythos but has all of the same charm and wit。 On to Troy which will doubtless be great as well!

Stephen Fry is easy to read。 I enjoyed this review of ancient Greek myths about the heroes, such as Odysseus, Hercules, and others。 Fry is very earthy, so there is that。

This feels like your cheeky uncle Stephen telling you Greek Myths he learned from his time at Cambridge, told with a smirk and sometimes relishing the salacious and gruesome qualities to the story (though there is more gore than sex)—and not without the odd curse here and there (ages: high school +)。 Is it odd to hear Cretans with Scottish accents, why, yes, yes it is。 Cockney accents=equally strange。 Does it get a little muddled at times—absolutely, but that is Greek mythology for you。 Overall This feels like your cheeky uncle Stephen telling you Greek Myths he learned from his time at Cambridge, told with a smirk and sometimes relishing the salacious and gruesome qualities to the story (though there is more gore than sex)—and not without the odd curse here and there (ages: high school +)。 Is it odd to hear Cretans with Scottish accents, why, yes, yes it is。 Cockney accents=equally strange。 Does it get a little muddled at times—absolutely, but that is Greek mythology for you。 Overall it's an entertaining refresher on many of the heroes we hear reference to。 I especially appreciated hearing the story of Jason and the Argonauts as I was least familiar with that story。 I started Ovid once and look forward to picking it up again and I feel like Fry's retellings are very accessible。 Just don't expect to remember *everything* afterwards。 This took me so long because I don't listen to audiobooks very regularly。 I still prefer Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology to this one, but they are both great if you want a refresher / high level introduction to some classic myths。 。。。more

As somebody who was instantly hooked by Mythos, I am absolutely obsessed with Fry’s writing and narration style。 Heroes did not fail to deliver, boasting the same Monty Python-esque sense of humor and storytelling of its predecessor。 However, my only irk falls into personal preference。 Covering the stories of the Gods, Mythos is a book chalk full of diverse, insane, and completely out of this world tales。 It was hard for things to ever get boring because there were so many characters to cover, a As somebody who was instantly hooked by Mythos, I am absolutely obsessed with Fry’s writing and narration style。 Heroes did not fail to deliver, boasting the same Monty Python-esque sense of humor and storytelling of its predecessor。 However, my only irk falls into personal preference。 Covering the stories of the Gods, Mythos is a book chalk full of diverse, insane, and completely out of this world tales。 It was hard for things to ever get boring because there were so many characters to cover, all with their own very unique powers and backgrounds。 Heroes, on the other hand, covered a select few mortal and demi-god leads… and while their tales were nothing short of action packed and surreal in themselves, the long chapters covering them had me feeling disengaged at times。 As a whole this book is amazing and did not disappoint。 I wish I discovered his Greek mythology series much sooner! 。。。more
