Bedlam brings back a lot of the old Skulduggery vibes。 The plot is a lot more interesting than in Midnight, some older characters make come backs, and there are some new concepts introduced to keep things fresh。I think this might be my favourite book out the new set so far。 There's still a lot going on, but I think Seasons of War will bring everything together nicely。Again, what an ending。 I'm so glad I have the next book to move into。 I can't imagine waiting a year to see what happens next! Actually enjoyed this much more than I thought I would! I went in with kind of… medium expectations I guess。 I’ve got a lot of nostalgic love for this series, but it’s one thing to remember a book you read fondly as a child, quite another to read it (or it’s sequel, in this case) as an adult。 So I was pretty surprised to find myself having a really good time with it。 It’s not perfect by any means。 The writing can be clunky, and it somehow is both a victim of YA tropes and rebelling against them, Actually enjoyed this much more than I thought I would! Classic, fantastic Skulduggery。 I love how Landy's book made fun of what was/is the current political climate and how Landy makes purposeful room for LGBQT characters and topics。 Bravo! I've finally figured out why I have such mixed feelings with the revival books。 It's because they're fanfiction。When Resurrection read as fanfiction featuring OC Omen Darkly, it made sense and was still enjoyable。 I could be wrong, but I remember all the fandom hype making it seem like Resurrection was going to be more of the jumping off point for a companion series (more darker more adult harry potter than darker more adult Percy Jackson like the original arc was) where Val would briefly come o I've finally figured out why I have such mixed feelings with the revival books。 It's because they're fanfiction。When Resurrection read as fanfiction featuring OC Omen Darkly, it made sense and was still enjoyable。 I could be wrong, but I remember all the fandom hype making it seem like Resurrection was going to be more of the jumping off point for a companion series (more darker more adult harry potter than darker more adult Percy Jackson like the original arc was) where Val would briefly come out of retirement to pass on the torch to our new teen characters, a few peripheral characters (and yes, it pains me to admit that Fletcher is a peripheral character) but then Midnight came and Omen was basically just reduced to babysitter so we could get back to Val and Skullduggery and based on how splinter the plot gets in Midnight and this one, I have a feeling we were originally supposed to go the next generation route before Landy realized that the fans were a lot less likely to buy Omen focused books than Val ones。I love that Valkyrie is bi。 That's cool。 That would have meant a lot to me when I first read the series in middle school。 But even though she's canonically bi now it still kind of felt more like the euphoria you get reading a fanfiction where the characters are queer than when you read an actual published book where the characters are queer。This one ends with a massive plot twist that left me more with feelings of dread that I'd have to read #13 than excitement to see what comes next so I think I'm stopping here。 。。。more

Once again, this series is still going downhill for me, and yet we finish it out。 I *might* have liked this one better than number 11 in the series, but that's a big might (I'm not even sure why, though)。。。I don't know, these just aren't feeling fleshed out and witty and written as well- I feel like a broken record saying that now。 Fight scenes have lost their punch, dialogue has lots its punch, characters just feel bleh, and there are entire chapters, and characters for that matter, that are ut Once again, this series is still going downhill for me, and yet we finish it out。 I *might* have liked this one better than number 11 in the series, but that's a big might (I'm not even sure why, though)。。。I don't know, these just aren't feeling fleshed out and witty and written as well- I feel like a broken record saying that now。 Fight scenes have lost their punch, dialogue has lots its punch, characters just feel bleh, and there are entire chapters, and characters for that matter, that are utterly unnecessary which just adds to the whole meh feel。 I still say read the first nine books and stop。 These later ones just aren't adding much at all。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A lovely twist at the end of the story!!! VALKYRIE IS A CHILD OF THE FACELESS ONES!!! I can’t wait to see how Damocles Creed will react to this and will he capture Valkyrie?! So excited to read Seasons of War because YASS QUEEN! I love Valkyrie being bisexual and being with Militsa because Militsa makes Valkyrie a better person in my opinion。 To be honest, I don’t view Crepuscular Vies a threat because he’s literally just like Dreylan Scarab except younger。

(bit of a rant ahead)This took me over a month to get through, which is already telling - though it's also not a short book, so it's not that bad。 I guess to keep it short: There's just too much going on and too many characters。 Given how much time we've spent with Omen by now, it's concerning how much I do not care about him or any of his friends (if anything, I care about Auger a little?)。 Similarly, I do not care about Sebastian or any of the folks he deals with。 I certainly don't care about (bit of a rant ahead)This took me over a month to get through, which is already telling - though it's also not a short book, so it's not that bad。 I guess to keep it short: There's just too much going on and too many characters。 Given how much time we've spent with Omen by now, it's concerning how much I do not care about him or any of his friends (if anything, I care about Auger a little?)。 Similarly, I do not care about Sebastian or any of the folks he deals with。 I certainly don't care about Abyssinia or Caisson。 None of this is due to me being so attached to old characters that I refuse to invest in new ones - if anything, I wish we wouldn't dig up old stuff like this book does - they're just set up in such a messy and shallow way that I do not know what exactly I'm supposed to be invested in。 Likewise, the plot feels really jumbled and incidental, where issues occur and resolve on mere whims。 This is partially due to the fact that the magic has really gone off the rails and I have no clear concept of anyone's power level, which makes it impossible to gauge the stakes in a given situation。It certainly feels like it's trying to do。。。 something。 Like with the music box。 I just think none of it is handled with the depth or care it requires, which leaves a lot happening with little substance。 Maybe I should just leave it be and I'm making a mistake by finishing this series because this isn't gonna turn around at all。。。 I'm certainly doubtful。 But oh well, time to buckle in anyway! 。。。more

。。more

In the 12th Skulduggery Pleasant book Valkyrie risks everything to help her little sister, while another enemy prepares for full-blown war between sorcerers and mortals。This was gooood, although I didn’t enjoy it as much as the last 2 books in the series。I think, what took from my enjoyment was the sheer quantity of storylines this time。 Landy does this often and he manages to resolve them eventually。 But in this book it sometimes took too long, so by the time the problem got solved I wasn’t tha In the 12th Skulduggery Pleasant book Valkyrie risks everything to help her little sister, while another enemy prepares for full-blown war between sorcerers and mortals。This was gooood, although I didn’t enjoy it as much as the last 2 books in the series。I think, what took from my enjoyment was the sheer quantity of storylines this time。 Landy does this often and he manages to resolve them eventually。 But in this book it sometimes took too long, so by the time the problem got solved I wasn’t that invested anymore。 And the payoff wasn’t always worth it to me。I read Bedlam while also finishing a different series, so I think that tainted my opinion。But other than that many other characters, apart from Val and Skul, got their moment to shine in this。 I loved to see more of Temper and Tanith is finally back again。 And Omen managed to big-brain his enemies, which I hope will boost his confidence。Also Landy is writing way more diverse than he did back in the day and I love that for him。 (Although writing about a pansexual genderfluid teenager is bold for a cis-man :O)And I effing adore him for not shying away to make the female characters physically bigger and even bulky。 Their muscles are too big to fit into vents! We love it!This series has become more than just badmouthed dorky villains and clever banter between Skul and Val。 The tone is more somber and the themes are a lot darker and dare I say mature? Which I eat up, because it feels like the series is growing with me。 But there are still lots of snarky and witty remarks to balance it out。It was giving me a bit of Good Will Hunting with Valkyrie‘s progression and Skulduggery talking to her about it and, honestly, I felt that。 。。。more

Skulduggery Pleasant is my favourite series of all time。 So it pains me to admit that I haven't been enjoying the new books。。。 Don't mind my previous reviews of Resurrection and Midnight, I've loved this series since I was 11, there was no easy way to admit to myself that I was struggling to love the new ones as much as the old ones。 I think Resurrection was because it was a bridge of a book, to introduce so many new things。 Midnight was。。。 I think I believed I loved it, and maybe I did at first Skulduggery Pleasant is my favourite series of all time。 So it pains me to admit that I haven't been enjoying the new books。。。 Don't mind my previous reviews of Resurrection and Midnight, I've loved this series since I was 11, there was no easy way to admit to myself that I was struggling to love the new ones as much as the old ones。 I think Resurrection was because it was a bridge of a book, to introduce so many new things。 Midnight was。。。 I think I believed I loved it, and maybe I did at first。 But it's left a bitter taste behind, I wasn't happy with the plot。Last August I started Bedlam。 And after 11 chapters I put it down。 I don't think this was actually much the book's fault? I've always loved and thought of Val as bi, and when we finally got it, I struggled to relate to her。 I do have a different experience of course, but as fellow wlw who definitely loved her growing up, it was a little saddening。 I finally picked it up again now, and it's definitely not a bad scene, it's not disrespectful at all, it was just not what I personally wanted。 That said, I think the rest of the book delivered on it better (Though I could have used more moments for them, cause I don't know a lot about Militsa at all, I barely remember the last two books)Moving on, I liked Bedlam。 It felt average, it was fun。 There were some really weird scenes, really fun ones and I laughed out loud quite often。 I don't think it feels like the original series (which is not because of what Val is dealing with, I have no complaints with that and I think it's important) but it just doesn't have the same magical feeling in it anymore。 That said, I will keep reading them。 I think I needed time away from this sequel series to really get my feelings about it in order, but now that I have, I can accept it as it is。 I still don't think I'll recommend it to others though, not until I've seen what this new series can really accomplish。Bedlam was humorous, fun and definitely weird but while the first half and a bit were a bit sluggish to get through, I really loved the last 150-200 pages。 Really reminded me of the third book and I really enjoyed myself reading it。 There's one particular moment I absolutely loved:(view spoiler)[ They were on the military base。 Well, holy hell。 What were the odds of that?"I planned all of this," Skulduggery whispered。"Oh, shut up。"(hide spoiler)]It was really just the perfect banter and sparked what I missed about the original。 Skulby himself being a twat。 Anyway, I hope I enjoy Seasons of War, I would love to give it 5 stars and really feel it was a 5 star book。 Or even Dead or Alive。 We'll see when we get there。 。。。more

I do love Skulduggery, but this one tested me a little。 The scene in the asylum didn’t seem to lead anywhere apart from levelling up Valkyrie’s mental torment, which actually didn’t need any help。There’s also a lot going on, but not always in a good way, and sometimes it’s hard to see the connections between the threads。 I do miss the original Valkyrie。
