Summary

Humbert Humbert - scholar, aesthete and romantic - has fallen completely and utterly in love with Lolita Haze, his landlady's gum-snapping, silky skinned twelve-year-old daughter。 Reluctantly agreeing to marry Mrs Haze just to be close to Lolita, Humbert suffers greatly in the pursuit of romance; but when Lo herself starts looking for attention elsewhere, he will carry her off on a desperate cross-country misadventure, all in the name of Love。 Hilarious, flamboyant, heart-breaking and full of ingenious word play, Lolita is an immaculate, unforgettable masterpiece of obsession, delusion and lust。

Nabokov is nothing short of a genius。 Lolita is undoubtedly a masterpiece。 From the unusual plot to the beautiful use of English, this is a book that keeps on giving and grabs the reader - to which the narrator often speaks directly。 The characters are complex and surprising, and the subtleties are a treat。

Such a hard read to stomach, but beautifully and poetically written。 When I talk about Lolita to others, I always hammer home the point that the content matter is atrocious, but is juxtaposed by the most beautiful prose I've ever encountered。I was first made aware of Lolita through Lana Del Rey's music, at which point I attempted to read this novel at age 14-15。 Interestingly enough, I was the age of Lolita。 I must admit, I had a difficult time finding the problem with this novel back then。 My t Such a hard read to stomach, but beautifully and poetically written。 When I talk about Lolita to others, I always hammer home the point that the content matter is atrocious, but is juxtaposed by the most beautiful prose I've ever encountered。I was first made aware of Lolita through Lana Del Rey's music, at which point I attempted to read this novel at age 14-15。 Interestingly enough, I was the age of Lolita。 I must admit, I had a difficult time finding the problem with this novel back then。 My thought process had been similar to Lolita's: "If I were approached by a handsome, wealthy, educated English man, I would go with him, too!" Such a dangerous thought for someone so young, especially to be supported by such a renowned novel as this one。 Now reading this at age 20, I am deeply disturbed。 My brain was just as easily manipulated as Lolita's in the novel。I think having read this at two different points of my life (age 14/15, and now aged 20), it really gave me a unique perspective on the novel。 My first read I was literally in the headspace of Lolita, an easily manipulated young girl。 Similar to Lolita, I was unable to find the flaws and errors of men like H。H。 and Quilty, which is a fascinating case study of how much development a brain can do in just six years。This read was different for me。 Instead of focusing on the awful plot matter like I had upon my first read at age 14, I focused on Nabokov's deep pop culture, literature, and just about any other reference annotated by this specific edition of the book。 I wanted to get into the mind of why Nabokov would be motivated to write something like Lolita, as it's so elegantly written, but contains disturbing subject matter。One of my favorite things about this book that I immediately noticed is the narration from someone like H。H。 - an unreliable narrator。 I think the most evident part of this book that explores H。H。's descent into madness is the final 4 chapters of the novel, where he hunts down Quilty at his mansion。 H。H。 specifically writes that Quilty refused to die, and took about 4 bullets when it was all said and done。 In addition, in between gunshot wounds, Quilty was playing the piano, running around his mansion, and crawling - all actions someone who just took four bullets to the body would not be experiencing。 This incident is the biggest red flag that H。H。's recorded version of events should be taken with a grain of salt。 The narration provided by H。H。 makes for a fascinating discussion on the subject of unreliable narrators, to which this novel bases its foundation from。Despite the horrible subject matter, Lolita stays in my mind as one of my favorite reads from my teen years。 My mind was so malleable that I saw nothing wrong with H。H。's treatment of Dolores。 In fact, I think I secretly yearned to be swept off my feet and pulled from school as she had, just to escape the monotonous day-to-day that was my teen years。 However, as a twenty year old now, my perspective on Lolita has significantly shifted, and my read on Lolita has become more critical and analytical。 I think the unreliable narrator aspect of this novel, and how anything H。H。 tells us should be taken with a grain of salt, is such an interesting facet。 。。。more

'Lolita' is a soul-crushing novel that effectively proves the genius of Nabokov。 Through the first person narrative of "Humbert Humbert", you are given a front row seat in the depravity of a pedophile with an ungodly passion for 12 year old Dolores Haze。 H。H。 is unrepentant, unaware of how is actions are perceived by others, and unreliable in his descriptions of the events of the book。 However, while you find yourself in a state of absolute loathing of the main narrator, you can't help but feel 'Lolita' is a soul-crushing novel that effectively proves the genius of Nabokov。 Through the first person narrative of "Humbert Humbert", you are given a front row seat in the depravity of a pedophile with an ungodly passion for 12 year old Dolores Haze。 H。H。 is unrepentant, unaware of how is actions are perceived by others, and unreliable in his descriptions of the events of the book。 However, while you find yourself in a state of absolute loathing of the main narrator, you can't help but feel enchanted by the masterful prose and powerful use of language dispensed by Nabokov。 He effortlessly allures the reader, not with endearing characters or a gratifying story, but with his ability to make you feel debauched。 This book offers a unique character study on the corrupted psychology of a child loving degenerate, and through its masterful use of language (Both English and French alike), it has cemented itself as a controversial classic。 I recommend this novel with caution。 。。。more

NABOKOV and his brilliant game playing of words, his wit, his sarcasm and his constant interweaving of languages were outstanding as I had expected but I am feeling rather disturbed after reading this novel which I’m actually sure was the entire point。 I felt like I was trapped in the mind of a delusional, dangerous and very sick pedophile who groomed and eventually consummated his prey who was of course Lolita。 I had to keep reminding myself of the era of this novel and that 12 year old Lolita NABOKOV and his brilliant game playing of words, his wit, his sarcasm and his constant interweaving of languages were outstanding as I had expected but I am feeling rather disturbed after reading this novel which I’m actually sure was the entire point。 I felt like I was trapped in the mind of a delusional, dangerous and very sick pedophile who groomed and eventually consummated his prey who was of course Lolita。 I had to keep reminding myself of the era of this novel and that 12 year old Lolita had no one else in the world to look out for her which is why it took her so long to find a way to leave。Nabokov tries unsuccessfully to convince us as members of the jury that Humbert Humbert’s actions were justifiable but I saw him as nothing but a cunning sexual predator and I would declare him to be guilty as charged。 I think he knew that too。 As for poor Lolita I saw her as a helpless, confused little girl and an unwilling partner in a sickening relationship “ …。I would lead my reluctant pet to our small home for a quick connection before dinner “ Shocking, yet brilliant and totally worth the read 。。。more

This is not a love story。Love means to protect, respect the boundaries of the one you love。 In this story we find a middleaged man who choose to give into his own desires and continuously rapes a twelve year old orphaned girl, his own stepdaughter (after he married her mother just for the reason of his desires for her daughter - and the mother accidentally died)。 This should not be nessecary to say(write), but it seem like it is - due to the fact that this story is by some read as an love story。 This is not a love story。Love means to protect, respect the boundaries of the one you love。 In this story we find a middleaged man who choose to give into his own desires and continuously rapes a twelve year old orphaned girl, his own stepdaughter (after he married her mother just for the reason of his desires for her daughter - and the mother accidentally died)。 This should not be nessecary to say(write), but it seem like it is - due to the fact that this story is by some read as an love story。 But the fact is that desire and obsession does not equal love。 Destroying a late childhood to fulfil one owns desires, has nothing to do with love。 Easy as that。 Seeing this book being talked about as a description of love makes me worried。 That being said, the reason for me to rate this one star is because I found som parts of the book kinda boring。 And I want to remind myself with this review not to prioritize to read this ever again to explore if it was not better than what I think of it now。 Note to self: it is not bad。 The language will sometimes drag you in - but it is Not interesting enough to take up so much of your time in your life ever again。 。。。more

As awful and unreliable the narrator in this novel is, this is a book everyone should read considering how much it has been implemented into society。 Our narrator is both the protagonist and antagonist, but also makes you feel truly。 He is sick, and yes the novel is about his infatuation with Lolita, but I think it’s also about the idea of love and how it can bend your morals。 I really enjoyed it, and considering how it’s implemented into our culture now more than ever it’s really important that As awful and unreliable the narrator in this novel is, this is a book everyone should read considering how much it has been implemented into society。 Our narrator is both the protagonist and antagonist, but also makes you feel truly。 He is sick, and yes the novel is about his infatuation with Lolita, but I think it’s also about the idea of love and how it can bend your morals。 I really enjoyed it, and considering how it’s implemented into our culture now more than ever it’s really important that people read this book, rather than depend on the movies。 。。。more

Nauseating, witty, tragic。 Nabokov's writing is filled with stunning, vibrant prose, quips, and raw feeling。 Humbert Humbert is a truly repulsive, pathetic character and it was fascinating to see his own twisted way of thinking。 My only complaints would be that I couldn't keep up with all the French (Although I know this was a deliberate choice by the writer) and that I didn't find Lolita's dialogue believable。 Nauseating, witty, tragic。 Nabokov's writing is filled with stunning, vibrant prose, quips, and raw feeling。 Humbert Humbert is a truly repulsive, pathetic character and it was fascinating to see his own twisted way of thinking。 My only complaints would be that I couldn't keep up with all the French (Although I know this was a deliberate choice by the writer) and that I didn't find Lolita's dialogue believable。 。。。more

But despite all of it, why did I continue with the book? Why bother?Because even though there are horrifying, details that made me feel so, so squeamish, it’s written in such a poetic and allusive way and you unintentionally fall in love with the writing even though you know it’s very wrong to do so。 Because even though the book is about the immoral seduction of an innocent child, I unintentionally focused on the seduction of language。 The way it’s written, makes H。H’s crimes and actions seem less vile: which is a prospect that has terrible implications for society。Speaking of Humbert, I still feel puzzled about his narration。 I know, as a reader, the story is just written in his perspective。 But are we supposed to sympathize with him? I mean nowhere does H。H beg for forgiveness of any sort。。。maybe we’re supposed to empathize with him。。? Maybe, but I still hate him so much because of the levels he stoops to。 Let me just wrap up this review by saying this: Lolita is a book that will probably question the way you feel about language and literature — every reader will interpret this book differently more or less。 There is so much power of language in this book, but I still feel extremely disgusted by this story。 My god, how can a book be so disturbing yet brilliant。 Overall, mixed feelings about this book。Side note: Sorry for the messy review, I wrote this review just about an hour after I read the book, so I couldn’t exactly organize my thoughts。 Excuse my run-on sentences, any improper writing and incorrect grammar。Reading time: approx。 6hRating: 3。5 stars 。。。more

La trama è davvero molto bella e commovente, tuttavia il modo in cui è scritto non è riuscito del tutto a farmi immergere nel complesso mondo di Lolita。 In ogni caso posso dire che questo è uno dei libri da leggere almeno una volta nella vita。
