Summary

Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay。 Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica。 Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety。 But as Franny’s history begins to unspool—a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime—it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds。 When Franny's dark secrets catch up with her, how much is she willing to risk for one more chance at redemption?

Epic and intimate, heartbreaking and galvanizing, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is an ode to a disappearing world and a breathtaking page-turner about the possibility of hope against all odds。

Absolutely amazing book。

After worldwide climate collapse has destroyed earth's fauna, a woman follows a handful of Arctic terns on their last migration。 In a post-apocalyptic world, hope is lost, inner demons run wild, and pain fosters violence。 After worldwide climate collapse has destroyed earth's fauna, a woman follows a handful of Arctic terns on their last migration。 In a post-apocalyptic world, hope is lost, inner demons run wild, and pain fosters violence。 。。。more

This book was。。。 emotional and sad and distressing and depressing but also beautiful in parts。 It took me a bit to get into the style of it, and the bouncing back and forth through time did get very disorienting, but I think in the end I still enjoyed it in a very。。。 poetic way。 Even though I saw the twist reveal coming from pretty early on in the book, it didn't matter, because the story was more about Franny's journey than anything else。 This book was。。。 emotional and sad and distressing and depressing but also beautiful in parts。 It took me a bit to get into the style of it, and the bouncing back and forth through time did get very disorienting, but I think in the end I still enjoyed it in a very。。。 poetic way。 Even though I saw the twist reveal coming from pretty early on in the book, it didn't matter, because the story was more about Franny's journey than anything else。 。。。more

I was rooting for the Arctic tern’s survival as well as that of the main character, Franny Stone, throughout this eco-dystopian novel。 Although the writing is slow at times, which is what you’d expect when the setting is the Arctic Circle and the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there is enough mystery in Franny’s life both past and present, and a glimmer of hope, to keep me interested and reading。 My truer rating is 3。75。

4。5, a very moving but emotional read

Karen

Beautifully written and interesting premise, but too much of the story was completely implausible for me to really love it。

Tell me about despair, yours, and I’ll tell you about mineI can’t seem to get away from mournful eco-horror this year。 This one was very well done。 The writing was exquisite and the characters were strange but interesting to follow。 Franny, Niall, the crew of the fishing vessel, all had very different minds and hearts but the author made them all feel relatable, which is something I like in a book。 I hope this isn’t the world we are living in, but of course, it is only a matter of time。

Jennifer

Dreamy, sad story of survivors guilt set in a future we can all imagine。

Andi Lybrand

Interesting story, engaging and thought provoking。 In the end, it was hard to really say how I felt about it。 Unsure how to rate but I never put it down。

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Could be my favorite book so far this year。It’s poetic, and enchanting。 It’s about forgiveness, regret, pain, but also redemption and love。It’s the story of a young woman seeking passage on a boat to find the Arctic terns。 Simple enough yet we come to learn she has a past …I sobbed at the end。AMAZING BOOK! Must read!

People love this book。 Unfortunately, I just couldn’t stick with it。 I will try again in the future 😪。

Will they survive? This novel is a slow burn that unwinds Franny's dark secrets that are revealed in the present, the past, and also through her night terrors。 Franny's extraordinary story parallels a world on the cusp of devastation, with maybe just a flicker of hope left。 Moving and passionate, emotional and important。 I highly recommend you immerse yourself in Migrations。 。。。more

4 stars for a moving, poignant ending。 I just couldn’t give it more despite the beautiful writing。 The main charcacter was difficult to connect with, almost lacking a personality。

Haunting I imagine I will think about this book for a long time。 Incredible characters, complex, flawed, heroic and broken。 A devastating look at what could happen if we don't pay attention。。。and act。 Is it a book of despair or hope? This is one of the things I will ponder。 Except for a few brave, tortured, committed people, all could be lost。 Beautifully written。 I would highly recommend this book。 Haunting I imagine I will think about this book for a long time。 Incredible characters, complex, flawed, heroic and broken。 A devastating look at what could happen if we don't pay attention。。。and act。 Is it a book of despair or hope? Very well written。 Keeps you wanting to read it because it is part mystery in a way that you learn about the main character in bits。 Beautiful prose in places。 Nature is involved so I love that。 A bit dark and sad but has hope included。 “Look for the clues”“The clues to what?”“To life, they are hidden everywhere。”

There's a deep thread of melancholy woven throughout this book, but there is also hope and love and a mourning for the things we have lost。 I adored this book, but it's also left me with a weight on my chest hours after finishing it。 This will be a book that stays with me, and one that I will probably find myself thinking about a lot。 This book takes place in a future where climate change had devastated the earth。 Almost all wild animals are close to extinction or extinct, and the seas are almos There's a deep thread of melancholy woven throughout this book, but there is also hope and love and a mourning for the things we have lost。 I adored this book, but it's also left me with a weight on my chest hours after finishing it。 This will be a book that stays with me, and one that I will probably find myself thinking about a lot。 This book takes place in a future where climate change had devastated the earth。 Almost all wild animals are close to extinction or extinct, and the seas are almost depleted of fish and sea life。 Franny Stone is a woman trying to track the last of the Arctic Terns, as they undertake perhaps their last migration from Greenland to Antartica。 Franny is able to convince a fishing boat to take her on, and make the journey across the world following the birds。 The book alternates between Franny's present on the boat, learning the ropes and making friends with the strange and wonderful crew, to her tragic and often saudade past。 Franny is an Irishwoman who feels the sea in her bones, and has restless, wandering feet。 Her past is certainly a mix of happy and sad, and she sees following the terns as a final cathartic journey。 This book made me feel。 It made sad and anxious about our bleak future if we don't do anything about climate change。 It also made me hopeful about how people try to do the right thing and try their hardest to stop the unstoppable。 It made me mourn for the species we have already lost, and the future animals that will suffer because of climate change。 I can see how some people could call this book 'predictable', but it's in a way a tragedy is。 You know from the beginning that things are not going to go well, but you can't stop reading because what if? and then you crash right into the ending。 。。。more

Wow, what to say about this book? If you like dreary, depressing stories with a main character who seems fated to live a life filled with one tragedy after another, then this book is for you。 Did I mention it’s dark? I should probably have given it four stars, except I was so glad when it was over! I think it was well written, but really, would it have been too much to give Franny a little happiness? this book was quite strange。。。 part mystery part romance part book about global warming。 it took me a while to get into it (although perhaps that’s because I got an audiobook), but once I finished the first 1/3 I couldn’t put it down。 the whole section about Franny’s marriage is amazing and beautifully written, but unfortunately the ending was kind of predictable。

Danielle

Gorgeous。 I listened to the audiobook, but I plan to reread this in a hard copy format as well。 Want to be sure I didn’t miss a thing。

MAJOR KUDOS TO THIS AUTHOR FOR AN INCREDIBLE DEBUT!!!!!!!!!! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH, it was so SO well written and i absolutely loved every page。 it’s a perfect length too, and i’m so glad that it was THIS good bc i bought it from an airport after leaving my books in my checked bag…。 Worth the exuberant airport price。 Seriously though, this was one of the best books i’ve EVER read and i highly highly recommend!!!

I wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t work for me。 The time period of a future where the birds and animals are extinct was hard to imagine and depressing。 Franny was impossible to understand and it got so I didn’t even want to try anymore。 Depressing book。

Nancy

I truly don’t know how to rate this。 I loved how beautifully it is written but I thought I would drown in the melancholy。

An incredibly haunting book that I couldn’t put down。 I wanted it to end but I didn’t want it to end。 Beautifully written

Didn’t find the characters particularly believable, which affected my view of the story, but it’s beautifully written and came together in the end
