Summary

A disappointing read - I have enjoyed so many of Boyd’s books, but not this one。 I could not get drawn in to the lives of the trio of main characters - I just didn’t care enough about them to be bothered about what happened to them in the end。 And what did happen to them in the end was, I felt, unsatisfactory for me。 I suppose it was saying something about the falseness of the film-making and literary worlds of the late 60s from a 21st century perspective, but really, so what? Was the orange juice carton (which as far as I can tell didn’t exist in the UK in 1968) a deliberate anachronism, and were there others I didn’t spot? So annoying。 I also got very annoyed with some of the ‘clever’ stuff such as the first sentence of the novel repeating in the first draft of Elfrida’s novel。 And what was all that about rhomboid/diamonds/lozenges/ parallelograms of light - was I missing a literary allusion or was it just a satirical take on novel writing? I have been disappointed with the last couple of Boyd’s novels - I hope the next one is better。 。。。more

Usually I love William Boyd, but this was very disappointing。

I’m such a fan of William Boyd。 Any Human Heart, and Restless were tremendous reads, characters, plots。 I do not know where he was going with this book。 The “trio” doesn’t really emerge until halfway through the book as distinct characters, there are so many side plots that have nothing to do with advancing the story。 Disappointed。

Big disappointment。 I did not like the characters nor the situation in this book。 Whatever the point of this book was supposed to be totally eluded me。 It just seemed like a bunch of scenes strung together about people that I didn't care about。 The ending was much like the rest of the book - disappointing。I have read other Boyd books, and liked them。 Just don't get this one。 Big disappointment。 I did not like the characters nor the situation in this book。 Whatever the point of this book was supposed to be totally eluded me。 It just seemed like a bunch of scenes strung together about people that I didn't care about。 The ending was much like the rest of the book - disappointing。I have read other Boyd books, and liked them。 Just don't get this one。 。。。more

C’est probablement plus un 4 * mais mes attentes sont très élevées quand je lis Boyd, et ce titre n’est pas aussi fort que la plupart de ses autres romans。 C’est long à décoller, mais la deuxième partie se dévore agréablement。 :)

This is an absorbing book by one of my favorite authors。 An inventive look inside the world of film-making, with three primary characters, each one flawed in very human ways。 The arc of each story is quirky but told with integrity and gusto。Not a uplifting book, and it doesn't end with hope for each of the three, but their fates are fitting。And there are lots of other, minor characters with stories of their own。 Great story telling, with pleasing syntax, as one expects from Mr Boyd。 A very good This is an absorbing book by one of my favorite authors。 An inventive look inside the world of film-making, with three primary characters, each one flawed in very human ways。 The arc of each story is quirky but told with integrity and gusto。Not a uplifting book, and it doesn't end with hope for each of the three, but their fates are fitting。And there are lots of other, minor characters with stories of their own。 Great story telling, with pleasing syntax, as one expects from Mr Boyd。 A very good example of British literary fiction。 。。。more

I struggled with this book。 I used to think William Boyd was one of my favourite authors - I loved Ice Cream War and some of his other earlier books - but now I honestly can't remember when was the last time I genuinely liked a book of his, let alone admired it。 This book somehow never got off the ground for me。 It was set in 1968 but I did not get the feel of the period。 I never bonded with any of the characters, nor much understood their actions; I know in real life people do weird, illogical I struggled with this book。 I used to think William Boyd was one of my favourite authors - I loved Ice Cream War and some of his other earlier books - but now I honestly can't remember when was the last time I genuinely liked a book of his, let alone admired it。 This book somehow never got off the ground for me。 It was set in 1968 but I did not get the feel of the period。 I never bonded with any of the characters, nor much understood their actions; I know in real life people do weird, illogical things, but I could not understand why Anny felt compelled to give all that money to her awful ex? Why had Elfrida and her husband stayed married for so long even though they did not seem to have any love between them or interest in one another? Did he even know she was a drunk? How did she suddenly found strength and will to get sober? Boyd is supposed to be a great storyteller but this story felt clunky。 It felt more like a snapshot of lives of the various characters thrown together。 I was not particularly curious about any of their destinies。。。 so yeah, didn't do it for me, unfortunately。 。。。more

I am a fan of William Boyd and his writing in this novel doesn’t disappoint。 It is set in the 1960s in Brighton and is told in the third person through 3 different sets of eyes, Elfrida, an alcoholic novelist who has been suffering writers’ block for years and whose film director husband is cheating on her; Anny, the young Swedish-American star of the movie who is being hounded by her ex husband; and Talbot, the film’s producer who is still in ‘the closet’。 Their stories are separate but do touc I am a fan of William Boyd and his writing in this novel doesn’t disappoint。 It is set in the 1960s in Brighton and is told in the third person through 3 different sets of eyes, Elfrida, an alcoholic novelist who has been suffering writers’ block for years and whose film director husband is cheating on her; Anny, the young Swedish-American star of the movie who is being hounded by her ex husband; and Talbot, the film’s producer who is still in ‘the closet’。 Their stories are separate but do touch each others’ without really connecting。 It is probably a 3 and a 1/2 stars but doesn’t quite reach the level of some of his other books。 。。。more

Picked this though knew nothing about the author。 Late night Kobo selection, should have tried harder before pressing 'confirm purchase'。 Rather stodgy。 Reminded of Midsommer Murders。 The producer, the actor, the something else, maybe the writer。 All the ingredients for something very smart but just wasn't。 Picked this though knew nothing about the author。 Late night Kobo selection, should have tried harder before pressing 'confirm purchase'。 Rather stodgy。 Reminded of Midsommer Murders。 The producer, the actor, the something else, maybe the writer。 All the ingredients for something very smart but just wasn't。 。。。more

Trio is a rather rollicking 1960s set novel that details the lives of a number of characters who come together to work on a movie。 Readers quickly begin to wonder if the movie can successfully be made as there are so many issues; some are the personal backstories of the characters, while others involve the theft of film, changes to scripts and more。 There is a comic feel to much of what transpired but with some pathos underneath。Following is a brief guide to some of the characters;Talbot is a mo Trio is a rather rollicking 1960s set novel that details the lives of a number of characters who come together to work on a movie。 Readers quickly begin to wonder if the movie can successfully be made as there are so many issues; some are the personal backstories of the characters, while others involve the theft of film, changes to scripts and more。 There is a comic feel to much of what transpired but with some pathos underneath。Following is a brief guide to some of the characters;Talbot is a movie producer, married but with other proclivities。 It is possible that his partner in movie making is ripping him off。Rodrigo was known as Reggie but has aspirations for his image that lead to a name change。 He is married to Elfrida but has a wandering eye。Elfrida has written a couple of well received novels, only to then face writer’s block。 Will she be able to write a novel about Virginia Woolf’s last day while she, our author, drinks to excess?Anny and Troy are the stars of the movie。 Anny’s ex is a wanted man and she may be implicated。 Many of her partners have roles to play in the story。Around the people, there are parties, theft, a cameo by Leonard Woolf and numerous subsidiary characters。Is this book a satire? A series of character studies? A suspenseful read? Loved it。 Three intertwined characters of varying ages all experiencing awakenings that will permanently change their lives。 Boyd’s grasp of the characters really draws the reader in, witnessing and feeling their emotions along side them。 Highly recommended。

I usually look forward to and enjoy a William Boyd novel but I found this one rather lack lustre, lacking the usual wit and verve of Boyd's writing。 Three characters all with strange names and leading rather desperate lives。 Everything worked out neatly in the end。 I usually look forward to and enjoy a William Boyd novel but I found this one rather lack lustre, lacking the usual wit and verve of Boyd's writing。 Three characters all with strange names and leading rather desperate lives。 Everything worked out neatly in the end。 。。。more

3。5 Stars。 Trio refers to the 3 main characters and their lives, loves and tribulations in England in 1968。 Funny the parallels during that time period to present day, especially the movie making industry。 I enjoyed this and do recommend。

While the latest novel from this master storyteller is not up there with his very best, there's still a lot to enjoy in Trio。As usual Boyd is brilliant at bringing characters alive。 The trio in question - a film producer, a Hollywood starlet, and an alcoholic writer - all quickly leap off the page and feel three-dimensional。 There is also a great supporting cast from the philandering director "Rodrigo" Jones, to private investigator Ken Kincaid。It also captures its 1960s setting on the set of an While the latest novel from this master storyteller is not up there with his very best, there's still a lot to enjoy in Trio。As usual Boyd is brilliant at bringing characters alive。 The trio in question - a film producer, a Hollywood starlet, and an alcoholic writer - all quickly leap off the page and feel three-dimensional。 There is also a great supporting cast from the philandering director "Rodrigo" Jones, to private investigator Ken Kincaid。It also captures its 1960s setting on the set of an absurd movie well, and there is plenty of wry humour。Trio is also about the process of writing as one of the triumvirate - Elfrida - tries to break her writer's block。 Her repeated attempts at writing an opening to a novel about the last day in the life of Virginia Woolf are priceless。Boyd stitches the interconnected lives together beautifully, and I found myself involved and interested in all three。 Apart from their connection to the film set, the trio are also struggling to mask secrets that threaten to blow up their lives。Indeed, many of the supporting characters are also living double lives, and deception of other people and the self is a major theme of Trio。But ultimately this is an enjoyable, but poignant comic novel。 Not all the characters will manage to escape the problems of the past。 There were hints of Muriel Spark in Boyd's writing, though less formally daring。For me Trio fell just short of Boyd's best work, but it is still a delight to read a novelist in complete control of his material, and one whose main focus always is making you want to read on。 。。。more

What a refreshing fast read with three of the most unlikely sympathetic characters whose steps I gladly walked。 Two characters are bothered all the time--one for money the other for attention and love。 My favorite, Elfrida Wing, who nobody bothers and is left to her own devices taking flight in the most dismally benighted directions。 This novel was too short and could have gone on for another 200 pages。 It ends with a whimper, and two characters find release by leaving their secrets behind。。。or What a refreshing fast read with three of the most unlikely sympathetic characters whose steps I gladly walked。 Two characters are bothered all the time--one for money the other for attention and love。 My favorite, Elfrida Wing, who nobody bothers and is left to her own devices taking flight in the most dismally benighted directions。 This novel was too short and could have gone on for another 200 pages。 It ends with a whimper, and two characters find release by leaving their secrets behind。。。or at least, beginning to find their true direction without the need for secrets。 I will read many more of Mr。 Boyd's creations。 。。。more
