Summary

Written with stylistic virtuosity, yet emotionally it felt empty。 Diaz is very gifted at capturing the voices of different literary genres, from a Gilded Age novel to the stream-of-consciousness diary of a dying aesthete (the latter approaching Modernist poetry)。 But it was kind of like a series of exquisite nesting boxes with nothing finally inside。The book centers on a New York City financier and his wife during the 1929 stock market crash, and subsequent competing attempts to define their leg Written with stylistic virtuosity, yet emotionally it felt empty。 Diaz is very gifted at capturing the voices of different literary genres, from a Gilded Age novel to the stream-of-consciousness diary of a dying aesthete (the latter approaching Modernist poetry)。 But it was kind of like a series of exquisite nesting boxes with nothing finally inside。The book centers on a New York City financier and his wife during the 1929 stock market crash, and subsequent competing attempts to define their legacy。 The first section is a fictionalized novella about them, something of an Edith Wharton pastiche。 Then we get the "real" financier's self-serving autobiography, his secretary-ghostwriter's reminiscences, and finally the wife's long-hidden diary。 I do love books that create a fictitious archive, but for me, none of the middle sections had anywhere near the same nuance of character development or enjoyable language as the imaginary novella。 The big reveal in the diary was pretty easy to guess, way in advance。 I closed the book wondering why I should care about which version of the story was true。 There was so little human feeling or social conscience in this couple's life, I didn't think they were worth this much attention。 。。。more

Ok, this ended up surprising me。 Almost shelved as DNF around 60% complete, but then the twist revealed itself and brought it all together。

4。5 - I added this to my TBR just before it’s release and when I finally got around to reading it, it was nothing like what I remembered it to be about - in a surprising and good way。 ‘Trust’ tells the story of Andrew Bevel (a JP Morgan type in the 1920s & his wife Mildred from 4 POVs and with each narrator we delve into the layered story and continually wonder if we are getting closer to the “truth”。 This book plays with themes surrounded truth, legacy, who is telling the story and for whom。 It 4。5 - I added this to my TBR just before it’s release and when I finally got around to reading it, it was nothing like what I remembered it to be about - in a surprising and good way。 ‘Trust’ tells the story of Andrew Bevel (a JP Morgan type in the 1920s & his wife Mildred from 4 POVs and with each narrator we delve into the layered story and continually wonder if we are getting closer to the “truth”。 This book plays with themes surrounded truth, legacy, who is telling the story and for whom。 It took some time to get into but was well worth it in the end。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this! Well written with very different voices。 Interesting themes around wealth accumulation, philanthropy, and truth。 Liked the progression towards understanding the true underlying story。 Wouldn't consider this a favorite or re-read, but good read。 Really enjoyed this! Eh。 I was expecting a lot more revelatory and punchy from Mildred’s diary。

This is a really interesting book。 It has four sections and each one revises the story told in the previous section。 The book is about money, wealth, power and ultimately, truth。 The first section of the book is a novel written in 1937 about the rise of Benjamin and Helen Rusk who have risen to the top of a world of seemingly boundless wealth。 The following sections show us other aspects of this story。 The longest section is the story of a woman who is determined to disentangle fact from fiction This is a really interesting book。 It has four sections and each one revises the story told in the previous section。 The book is about money, wealth, power and ultimately, truth。 The first section of the book is a novel written in 1937 about the rise of Benjamin and Helen Rusk who have risen to the top of a world of seemingly boundless wealth。 The following sections show us other aspects of this story。 The longest section is the story of a woman who is determined to disentangle fact from fiction over the course of her life -- and finally brings us to what might really by the truth in the final section。 Its a mystery and a puzzle with a lot of say about money and "the reality-warping force of capital, and the ease with which power can manipulate facts。" 。。。more

There are a lot of layers to this book。 The writing is very rich and would be lost in an audiobook version。 It was a slower read for me until I understood the stories were intertwined

Trust is the best fiction book I have read in a very long time。 It is challenging to write a review because discovering the brilliance and connectedness of the story woven together by Diaz is stunning。 I would not want to spoil the experience for anyone。 Diaz incredibly gives each narrator a distinct and authentic voice。 The language of the book is beautiful。 And the book has something important to say about power, the way people with resources try to “bend and align reality itself," the silenci Trust is the best fiction book I have read in a very long time。 It is challenging to write a review because discovering the brilliance and connectedness of the story woven together by Diaz is stunning。 I would not want to spoil the experience for anyone。 Diaz incredibly gives each narrator a distinct and authentic voice。 The language of the book is beautiful。 And the book has something important to say about power, the way people with resources try to “bend and align reality itself," the silencing of some voices, the ways that deeply held views often are not practiced in everyday life and the struggles of relationships。This would be an excellent choice for a book club because there are so many threads to untangle and it would be delightful to do so。 。。。more

This is a very competent love letter to literary novels。 While the book doesn't do anything groundbreaking, it uses structure and competence in style to shine through。This may lead to slightly flat characters, but for the intentions of the author it works perfectly to create a really enjoyable piece。 This is a very competent love letter to literary novels。 While the book doesn't do anything groundbreaking, it uses structure and competence in style to shine through。This may lead to slightly flat characters, but for the intentions of the author it works perfectly to create a really enjoyable piece。 。。。more

I am disappointed that I did not like this book as much as I think I should have… it had been touted as one of the best literary books of 2022。

For an hour or so, she would enjoy the bliss of impersonality - of becoming pure perception,of existing only as that which saw the mountain top, heard the bell, and smelled air。

Took me literally 3 months to actually finish this book from when I started it 😍😍 but I could not put the book down when I read it on the plane yesterday I thought the book’s exploration of how playing the stock market allows one to bend and align reality — just as the book does through its varying narratives — was super interesting。

Layer upon layer of appreciation for this marvelous book。 Seemingly effortless erudition about markets, music and madness。 A page turning mystery and a polemic against market manipulation。 Wow。

A good story。 Once you “got it” won’t be able to put it down。 Really well written。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Multiple narrators and timelines makes this book a little confusing at times。 But eventually it all comes together。 It is unclear whether or not there is any factual basis for the story 。 Real events and even some historical figures are part of the story so perhaps the main characters are based real people。 It is an engrossing tale。

This is an absorbing book and one that makes me feel not quite alert enough to perceive all of its subtle revelations。 It’s most intriguing aspect is its form - four narratives, each a different genre, tell the story of a wealthy couple in the 1920s。 After the first narrative, I thought I understood what mysteries were in need of solving - but the last narrative revealed that I had failed to spot an entirely different mystery。 The fact that I didn’t is unsettling, since it concerns our assumptio This is an absorbing book and one that makes me feel not quite alert enough to perceive all of its subtle revelations。 It’s most intriguing aspect is its form - four narratives, each a different genre, tell the story of a wealthy couple in the 1920s。 After the first narrative, I thought I understood what mysteries were in need of solving - but the last narrative revealed that I had failed to spot an entirely different mystery。 The fact that I didn’t is unsettling, since it concerns our assumptions about gender roles - so humbling when you have to acknowledge your biases again and again even while working to eliminate them。 Anyway, by the end I felt both satisfied - neat little twist - and not, since I still have questions that only a re-reading might address。 Or perhaps I can find someone to read it too and discuss。 Full of interesting observations about money and its slippery power - and marriage, and its slippery too。 。。。more

If you're a fan of literary fiction that offers both a compelling story and a profound exploration of complex themes, then I would highly recommend Trust。 Diaz's writing style is masterful, combining beautiful prose with a gripping narrative that keeps readers questioning the truth from beginning to end。 If you're a fan of literary fiction that offers both a compelling story and a profound exploration of complex themes, then I would highly recommend Trust。 Diaz's writing style is masterful, combining beautiful prose with a gripping narrative that keeps readers questioning the truth from beginning to end。 。。。more
