Summary

Took me literally 3 months to actually finish this book from when I started it 😍😍 but I could not put the book down when I read it on the plane yesterday I thought the book’s exploration of how playing the stock market allows one to bend and align reality — just as the book does through its varying narratives — was super interesting。

Layer upon layer of appreciation for this marvelous book。 Seemingly effortless erudition about markets, music and madness。 A page turning mystery and a polemic against market manipulation。 Wow。

A good story。 Once you “got it” won’t be able to put it down。 Really well written。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Multiple narrators and timelines makes this book a little confusing at times。 But eventually it all comes together。 It is unclear whether or not there is any factual basis for the story 。 Real events and even some historical figures are part of the story so perhaps the main characters are based real people。 It is an engrossing tale。

This is an absorbing book and one that makes me feel not quite alert enough to perceive all of its subtle revelations。 It’s most intriguing aspect is its form - four narratives, each a different genre, tell the story of a wealthy couple in the 1920s。 After the first narrative, I thought I understood what mysteries were in need of solving - but the last narrative revealed that I had failed to spot an entirely different mystery。 The fact that I didn’t is unsettling, since it concerns our assumptio This is an absorbing book and one that makes me feel not quite alert enough to perceive all of its subtle revelations。 It’s most intriguing aspect is its form - four narratives, each a different genre, tell the story of a wealthy couple in the 1920s。 After the first narrative, I thought I understood what mysteries were in need of solving - but the last narrative revealed that I had failed to spot an entirely different mystery。 The fact that I didn’t is unsettling, since it concerns our assumptions about gender roles - so humbling when you have to acknowledge your biases again and again even while working to eliminate them。 Anyway, by the end I felt both satisfied - neat little twist - and not, since I still have questions that only a re-reading might address。 Or perhaps I can find someone to read it too and discuss。 Full of interesting observations about money and its slippery power - and marriage, and its slippery too。 。。。more

If you're a fan of literary fiction that offers both a compelling story and a profound exploration of complex themes, then I would highly recommend Trust。 Diaz's writing style is masterful, combining beautiful prose with a gripping narrative that keeps readers questioning the truth from beginning to end。 If you're a fan of literary fiction that offers both a compelling story and a profound exploration of complex themes, then I would highly recommend Trust。 Diaz's writing style is masterful, combining beautiful prose with a gripping narrative that keeps readers questioning the truth from beginning to end。 。。。more

The thing is, I can't really talk about the reasons why this book is good without spoiling things。 But I'm going to try。Diaz maintains four perspectives and four unique voices that focus on Mildred (aka Helen when novelised) that sometimes appear stark contrasts to each other, but with a binding thread that keeps them together。 It's a book about how women were/are perceived, and what are the motives behind the molding of these perceptions。I like mysteries。 The most common seem to be murder myste The thing is, I can't really talk about the reasons why this book is good without spoiling things。 But I'm going to try。Diaz maintains four perspectives and four unique voices that focus on Mildred (aka Helen when novelised) that sometimes appear stark contrasts to each other, but with a binding thread that keeps them together。 It's a book about how women were/are perceived, and what are the motives behind the molding of these perceptions。I like mysteries。 The most common seem to be murder mysteries, which can be fun。 But I loved that the mystery was just "who is this person?" and what shapes how we perceive people and the stories we tell about them to ourselves and to the outside world。In a way, Andrew (Benjamin) too gets four different interpretations。 It's strange how the book keeps you hanging on for Mildred, who is far more elusive, while Andrew too is a mystery, and possibly more unknowable, because every time he speaks it's to an audience。To sum, I found this book fascinating and multi-faceted。 I highly recommend。 。。。more

If there were two categories to rate the book, I’d give Trust 5 stars for writing, and 2 stars for the story。 The structure of the book (novel, autobiography, memoir, journal) was interesting, and Diaz’s writing is beautiful。 But the heart of the story lost me at times and I found myself skipping passages。 In the end, I didn’t care enough about the characters to discover the mystery of who they really were。

It did not grab me until 50% of the way through。 But when it did, I was hooked。 I actually liked the premise but the first two sections just lacked a certain something for me。

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book structured like this before。 So intriguing and very much enjoyed every part。

BC Coulter

Elegant。 Imaginative。 Anachronistic? Probably。

Oh I love books with unreliable narrators

Judy

It took me quite a while to get my teeth into this story - not a fan of the stilted writing of the early sections。 But, boy did I get hooked。 Great story of those with power and how it is used。

I would really give thin 2。5 stars。 I just didn't feel like at the end of the book there was a really point to having read it。 I didn't gain much from reading it。 I don't know, just kind of blah to me。 Can't really put my finger on why。 I would really give thin 2。5 stars。 I just didn't feel like at the end of the book there was a really point to having read it。 I didn't gain much from reading it。 I don't know, just kind of blah to me。 Can't really put my finger on why。 。。。more

Maybe a 2。5 for me? It had interesting bits, I liked the unfinished feeling of the second section。 But overall, I was bored and didn’t want to pick it back up。 At times this felt a bit like a Wes Anderson movie, with the odd pacing and characters。 But it lacked the charm his movies have。

Well-written, but it just didn't hook me。 Solid historical fiction overall regarding the financial market and the early 20th century。 Diaz did a great job describing the power and influence of money/cash。 Conceptually a unique book in terms of the structure Diaz built out。 Well-written, but it just didn't hook me。 Solid historical fiction overall regarding the financial market and the early 20th century。 Diaz did a great job describing the power and influence of money/cash。 Conceptually a unique book in terms of the structure Diaz built out。 。。。more

I will say this book is certainly well written。 There is an inventive way that this was put together with various perspectives on the same story - what is real, what is truth。 To be candid, this just fell flat for me。

Holly

Beautifully written and crafted novel。 I had never read anything by this author and will again。 Very lush writing that places time and setting perfectly。 Some of the pages got long but overall I enjoyed the book。 Ending was fitting。

Dan

Brilliant。 There are always two realities。 In some cases more, as many as three。 As Mildred speaks for herself I recall what Maya Angelou once wrote: “There’s no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you。” Silence is not golden。 And? Be careful the stories you believe。

Glennys Egan

Loved this one。 Very inventive。

Don't get the hype tbh。 I like the writing style but its impersonality, particularly in the finance-heavy sections, totally made the novel drag。 While I also love the premise of not knowing which voices in a book to trust/working my way as a reader through many interconnected/meta storylines because I am a post-modern snob, I didn't feel connected enough to any of the characters or the plot to get into the game of who/what was unreliable vs。 who/what wasn't。 Don't get the hype tbh。 I like the writing style but its impersonality, particularly in the finance-heavy sections, totally made the novel drag。 While I also love the premise of not knowing which voices in a book to trust/working my way as a reader through many interconnected/meta storylines because I am a post-modern snob, I didn't feel connected enough to any of the characters or the plot to get into the game of who/what was unreliable vs。 who/what wasn't。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book despite my initial disappointment。 I gave it 4 stars though really I’m rounding up from 3。5。 The recommendation that led me to the book gave me the impression that it was a sort of roaring twenties society gossip fest。 I came in ready for boozy, debauched escapism。 Let’s just say, this is not that。 In fact, it was so dry, that I had to reset my expectations entirely and start the first section over again with a completely different mindset。 I’m glad I gave the book a second c I enjoyed this book despite my initial disappointment。 I gave it 4 stars though really I’m rounding up from 3。5。 The recommendation that led me to the book gave me the impression that it was a sort of roaring twenties society gossip fest。 I came in ready for boozy, debauched escapism。 Let’s just say, this is not that。 In fact, it was so dry, that I had to reset my expectations entirely and start the first section over again with a completely different mindset。 I’m glad I gave the book a second chance because as I said, ultimately I did like the book well enough。 There’s a slow build up to the end that probably leads us to closer to the truth of these people that we suspect from the start, but even then I didn’t feel that we’d ever really know the truth of these people。 The weakness of the book is I’m not sure we ultimately care。 I do wonder if the setting does give the book a glamour it doesn’t entirely earn。 You are never fully invested in any of the characters and even the two I found the most interested are never granted a full emotional arc。 Everyone in this book seems to be operating on some sort of muted emotional plane, which is in great contrast to the tumultuous and effervescent events in the background。 It is assumed the reader already knows the historical context as the writer only alludes to it, never giving it a full and vibrant rendering that might have added some color to this story。 It’s like it’s trying to be Citizen Kane without the benefit of groundbreaking cinematography and an epic score。 Looking back I suspect my imagination might have added a bit of zhuzh that isn’t necessarily there, but helped me fill in the glamour and bling I was craving。 。。。more

Is this book the Emperor’s New Clothes? People actually like this book? Every time the story picked up a little the author would bore me with financial information。 Enough already。 A young woman is hired to work as a typist, secretary and writing assistant to a wealthy widower。 He wants her to assist in the writing of his memoir and put out the truth about his wife who was written about inaccurately ( or so he thinks) in a prior novel。 Who cares! Thank goodness I finished。 Can’t believe I gave i Is this book the Emperor’s New Clothes? People actually like this book? Terrific read and listen, went back and forth。 Take of couple 1890s to post depression 1929。 Both somewhat reclusive, loners, wealthy and becoming wealthier by shrewd, math laden understanding of market and people’s behavior。 Told in series of books from different points of view that allowed reader to discover differences and nuances as book went onHighly recommend

Well written and interesting enough, but I was a bit disappointed。 The same story (or aspects of it) is told in four different ways, each of them elegantly executed, but if there was some original insight or vision, I missed it。
