Summary

Anastasia is the princess no one needs: the fourth daughter born to an emperor without a son, and the only royal lacking a magical gift。

Until she collides with a young Cossack rebel, changing both their lives forever。

Damien is taken from everything he knows and raised as a ward of the Romanovs。

Anastasia develops a strange kind of magic shared only by the Black Monk Rasputin。

While her power grows in secret, boosted by forbidden contact with Damien, Anastasia makes a mistake with terrible consequences。

Fate grants her a single chance to set it right… but saving what she lost may cost everything she loves。

The Lark Notes:
I think what captivates us about Anastasia is our dream of what could have been。 Anastasia’s death was so tragic, I wanted to give her another life。

This book is not a retelling of any other Anastasia story。 It’s set in 1919 in a world similar to ours, but with magic。 My next series will be a vampire family saga set in the modern version of that same world。

This is my fantasy of the happy ending Anastasia deserved。 Not because she was a Romanov, but because she was a human。 I want all of you to have the happy ending you deserve – it’s why I love writing romance。 --Sophie

“Anastasia” is an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance。 It is intended for mature readers and contains spicy scenes not suitable for all。

This is a large book。 It took me a while to read on my kindle。 When I first started reading this novel, I was unsure how I would like it。 That was a short-lived fear。 I know almost nothing about Russian history, so I will not talk about historical accuracy。 What I am here to review is the storyline itself。 I was obsessed with this book。 The past few nights I stayed up reading late, trying to stave off sleep。 I never quite knew where the story was going。 Sophie Lark puts twist, after twist into t This is a large book。 It took me a while to read on my kindle。 When I first started reading this novel, I was unsure how I would like it。 That was a short-lived fear。 I know almost nothing about Russian history, so I will not talk about historical accuracy。 What I am here to review is the storyline itself。 I was obsessed with this book。 The past few nights I stayed up reading late, trying to stave off sleep。 I never quite knew where the story was going。 Sophie Lark puts twist, after twist into the plot to keep you guessing。 。。。more

This book was so good! I got it when it came out and was a little hesitant on reading it。 Historical fiction is something new to Sophie and I loved the story of Anastasia since I was child and didn’t want it ruined。 The slow burn of this story is everything。 They say it’s an enemies to lovers I would call it that。 For those of you who were up in arms because it wasn’t 100% accurate, do you know what historical fiction means? This book was phenomenal。 I do not claim to know all of the history behind the Romanovs BUT I do know that they weren’t saints。 I feel like Sophie captured that through and through, but out of this madness came a child who only knew what her family taught her to someone who had grown to be a woman who saw the wrongs of her family and their regime。 It took time for that growth to happen hence the slow start but having an enemy become your moral compass and friend and eventually your love is beaut This book was phenomenal。 I do not claim to know all of the history behind the Romanovs BUT I do know that they weren’t saints。 I feel like Sophie captured that through and through, but out of this madness came a child who only knew what her family taught her to someone who had grown to be a woman who saw the wrongs of her family and their regime。 It took time for that growth to happen hence the slow start but having an enemy become your moral compass and friend and eventually your love is beautiful。 It’s poetic。 Damien and stassie were a slow burn that spread like wildfire toward the end。 You could feel everything they were feeling as the reader。 I was always enamored with the animated Anastasia as a child but this is the reimagining that I prefer。 The paranormal elements only made it capture my interest more。 For me, Sophie hit the nail on the head; this was the ending I wanted。 A powerful woman guided by love and the desire not to repeat past mistakes。 The illustrations were perfection, I hope Sophie’s hardcover edition comes with color illustrations。 I literally cannot sing enough praises for this book。Don’t feel intimidated by it’s length, it is worth it! 。。。more

The twist where she went back in time, was not expecting that。 10/10 would read again。

Un poco repetitivo en varios temas, la trama transcurre algo lento pero que esté narrado en dos perspectivas le da un giro interesante。 A pesar de que no es la historia tradicional de Anastassia que tenga magia lo vuelve algo más entretenido。

Don’t be intimidated by the length of this book!! It’s so worth it and paints the story of Anastasia & the Romanov’s in such an incredibly hopeful light。 This is the ending they deserved!

Such a good book! This book starts slow, there is a lot of world building which can be slow at times。 Once the book picks up it picks up, the author also included a music list and prompts what songs to start at certain points which makes it that much more amazing! I love the twist at the end! I did not see that coming。 Run and read this book, everything from the story line to the illustrations is just amazing!

The book kept me consistently interested in Anastasia’s court life from childhood to adulthood with a steady stream of romance with an enemy childhood friend with a dash of magic and a fantasy retelling。 Rasputin is also an intriguing villain。

This book is probably the most beautiful book I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading。 It was so so magical and enthralling。 Before I read this book, I didn’t know a lot about Anastasia。 I watched the movie to “prep” and quickly realized that there was so much more to this story and ended up going down a Google rabbit hole about Anastasia and her family。 I desperately wish the real story could’ve been more like this one。Anastasia’s character was a breath of fresh air。 I loved her and Damien from t This book is probably the most beautiful book I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading。 It was so so magical and enthralling。 Before I read this book, I didn’t know a lot about Anastasia。 I watched the movie to “prep” and quickly realized that there was so much more to this story and ended up going down a Google rabbit hole about Anastasia and her family。 I desperately wish the real story could’ve been more like this one。Anastasia’s character was a breath of fresh air。 I loved her and Damien from the beginning to the end。 Anastasia’s confidence and love for those around her was so strong。 She’s one of the bravest characters I’ve ever read about。 Damien surprised me in more ways than one。 Watching him navigate his struggles of possessing dark magic was sad and inspiring at the same time。 He and Anastasia are so clearly made for each other。 The magic and adventure in this story was absolutely breathtakingly amazing。 From Rasputin (🤮) to Damien, Anastasia and the rest of the Romanovs, everything was so cool to read。 If you know anything about the true story of Anastasia, then you know her ending was not a happy one by any means。 Sophie, thank you so much for changing that in this book。 It was touching to be able to see what could’ve been with just a touch of magic 🤍。 This has officially made it in my Top 5。 。。。more

This book was insane。 I had to collect my thoughts because once things started happening in the story, the ball never stopped rolling。 The first 50% of this book is mostly world building, and getting to know Anastasia’s family members。 This was done on purpose to get us to be more sympathetic towards the characters when the climax occurs, but at times it felt like too much。 The slow beginning is eradicated when the climax happens。 You can’t put the book down after this because it doesn’t stop go This book was insane。 I had to collect my thoughts because once things started happening in the story, the ball never stopped rolling。 The first 50% of this book is mostly world building, and getting to know Anastasia’s family members。 This was done on purpose to get us to be more sympathetic towards the characters when the climax occurs, but at times it felt like too much。 The slow beginning is eradicated when the climax happens。 You can’t put the book down after this because it doesn’t stop going。 You have to find out what happens next。 I loved the romance between Anastasia and Damien。 It was very pretty。 Weird way to describe but that’s all I can think of when I think of them together。 I loved how they were friends first, but realized they were in love with each other from the start。 Their letters to each other 😭。 Reading how Anastasia struggled during those two years was heartbreaking but very necessary to her character growth。 I always liked her character, but her struggles made me enjoy her more。 When Damien and her finally reunite it is EVERYTHING。 The plot twist is INSANE。 Not something that’s uncommon, but definitely something I was not expecting for this story。 It didn’t feel like a cop out, but other authors use it as one。 This book is the definition of jarring and emotional whiplash。 Writing was great, plot great, really good storytelling on Sophie Lark’s part。 This book is gonna put me in a slump。 。。。more

This was a very chonky book, clocking in at 849 pages, but I didn't mind。 It let the story do a lot of things that it wouldn't have been able to, had it bee a more standard 200-400。 Plus, I think as a large standalone it works better than if it had been sliced into pieces in a more "serial" format like a lot of Kindle series tend to do。Before I begin though, l did notice the author reading and interacting with reviews, and I do want it known that I am a believer that review spaces are for reader This was a very chonky book, clocking in at 849 pages, but I didn't mind。 It let the story do a lot of things that it wouldn't have been able to, had it bee a more standard 200-400。 Plus, I think as a large standalone it works better than if it had been sliced into pieces in a more "serial" format like a lot of Kindle series tend to do。Before I begin though, l did notice the author reading and interacting with reviews, and I do want it known that I am a believer that review spaces are for readers, not authors, and that my reviews are written for readers。With that out of the way。。。While I overall thought the writing was nice and the story decently crafted, a prevailing thought throughout my read was: why wasn't this a pure fantasy, why is it a historical fantasy AU retelling? I mean, I know fan fiction is quite popular, and that the inherent notoriety of the fairy-tale like story of Anastasia in the cultural zeitgeist is a great hook for getting potential readers interested, but all in all, so much of the story felt like the author's own thing, that trying to tether it back to real history didn't strike me as especially worth it, since that opens it up to a variety of ethical debates。Like, Russia has long been a conquering nation with a long and often brutal, bloody history with things like serfdom, subjugating other nations, and mistreating/ignoring different social and ethic groups (for example, a lot of Russians are ethnically Central Asian, not European)。So, inherently, there's going to be some back and forth about Anastasia and Damien's relationship and the portrayal of their respective cultures by an author hailing from neither, due to the reality of a lot of very real and sad histories。 Anastasia is a white royal from the ruling class and Damien is a dark skinned commoner from a group that was subjugated by Anastasia's nation--there's debates in that I'm not personally equipped to handle。 On top of that there's the larger question of whether it's okay to essentially write fanfic of a historical figure who died tragically as at 17 and is now being aged up in a fictional story where she's placed in several sexual scenes and given what has to be a plethora of ideas and opinions we couldn't possibly know if the real person would have agreed with (and also there was absolutely some influence from the Don Bluth movie in all this)。I don't feel like I have the appropriate knowledge or position to analyze these debates in depth or make any definitive statements; I'm still working things out in my own head。 I just know that, as a whole, stories of this nature can come with particular pitfalls and I try to keep those in mind whilst consuming such media。 I saw a few other reviews that were unhappy about several aspects like the way historical facts were misused/misrepresented/etc or the inaccuracies with the Cossack people and went into more depth and had more expertise on those matters, so I encourage you to seek out more insight on those matters to make an informed call yourself。 As a whole, I'm of a mind that it would have felt better if this had just been an original fantasy because I did overall enjoy the essentials of what was given and liked a lot of the ideas。 It was done well enough that I got through 800+ pages in about 12 total hours of reading time。 PPersonally, I found the inclusion of things like vampires and werewolves a bit jarring and not my most favorite route the plot could have taken, as I was anticipating a fantasy that was all mortal beings with magic and possibly like。。。 inhuman demonic creatures, not other humanoid fantasy races, but it overall played out decently。 The time traveling aspect towards the end also wasn't my favorite plot device, because it is a little sad to know that Damien didn't experience all the romance and closeness and relationship development he had with Anastasia that she still remembers。Overall, it was engaging enough for a full day of reading and I don't come away with any particular frustrations beyond feeling a little iffy and unsure regarding elements I mentioned above。 I liked the characters on their own and round the romance to be fairly enjoyable。 Not my absolute favorite but it had decent emotional beats and had development, which is more than I can say for a lot of romances I've read。The heavy inclusion of colorful art was also a really lovely touch。 I enjoyed seeing those as I read。 I think it's really wonderful when books include art; we all experience storytelling with pictures as kids and then one day we just stop, thinking it's childish for some reason, but illustrations can be incredible tools to enhance a story and show things in a way words simply cannot, so it'd be wonderful if it happened more often。 。。。more

The world building was cool and I enjoyed the first 1/3 of the book。 The tension before the romance and the foundation of it were good, but when it actually came time for the couple to get together, it just fell flat。 But by far the worst part of this book is the way it paints the Russian revolution and the working class。
