Summary

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born。 But Circe has neither the look nor the voice of divinity, and is scorned and rejected by her kin。 Increasingly isolated, she turns to mortals for companionship, leading her to discover a power forbidden to the gods: witchcraft。

When love drives Circe to cast a dark spell, wrathful Zeus banishes her to the remote island of Aiaia。 There she learns to harness her occult craft, drawing strength from nature。 But she will not always be alone; many are destined to pass through Circe's place of exile, entwining their fates with hers。 The messenger god, Hermes。 The craftsman, Daedalus。 A ship bearing a golden fleece。 And wily Odysseus, on his epic voyage home。

There is danger for a solitary woman in this world, and Circe's independence draws the wrath of men and gods alike。 To protect what she holds dear, Circe must decide whether she belongs with the deities she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love。

27。 A book with a map--Circe by Madeline MillerCirce is a goddess and a witch。 She is also the most relatable human woman I have read about this year。 As we follow her life from the arrogance of youth through her exile to her own island and onto her work as a witch and life as a mother, lover, and wife, the thing that is constantly resonating is just how much Circe is like all woman。 She's not the dark, vengeful sorceress of other accounts (including The Odyssey)。 She is amazing and all too huma 27。 A book with a map--Circe by Madeline MillerCirce is a goddess and a witch。 She is also the most relatable human woman I have read about this year。 As we follow her life from the arrogance of youth through her exile to her own island and onto her work as a witch and life as a mother, lover, and wife, the thing that is constantly resonating is just how much Circe is like all woman。 She's not the dark, vengeful sorceress of other accounts (including The Odyssey)。 She is amazing and all too human。 。。。more

I really enjoy the way Madeline Miller weaves a story and thought Circe was well told。 I listened to the audio book。I did find the beginning of the tale a little difficult to listen too。 It is ironic, but for all Circe was surrounded by her family before her exile, it was the beginning of her life which was a story of alienation and rejection more than her time on the island。 It was painful to hear and experience with her。Once she had been on her island for a while, had learnt witchcraft, and fe I really enjoy the way Madeline Miller weaves a story and thought Circe was well told。 I listened to the audio book。I did find the beginning of the tale a little difficult to listen too。 It is ironic, but for all Circe was surrounded by her family before her exile, it was the beginning of her life which was a story of alienation and rejection more than her time on the island。 It was painful to hear and experience with her。Once she had been on her island for a while, had learnt witchcraft, and felt stronger and more confident about who she was, I enjoyed her story a lot more。 I loved the characters that came to the island。。。 Hermes, Daedalus, Odysseus, Athena, Telemachus and Penelope, and felt warm fuzzies over the ending。 。。。more

It has been so long since I read The Odyssey。 This book brought back so much of that book, and I really enjoyed the new directions this book ventures。

I enjoyed this story as a slow burn coming of age where the MC develops her own sense of self and eventually chooses her own path。 I really enjoyed it, a nice weekend read。

Circe is achingly powerful and thought-provoking。 Many of my friends have recommended this book to me over the years, and it feels good to finally understand (and echo) the unanimous praise。 Humankind has always been interested in immortality。 Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone。 The unbearable lightness of being。 In each story, the conclusion is always that living eternally is not truly living。 The most important things in your life are no longer important if you live infinite lives。 Bringing Circe is achingly powerful and thought-provoking。 Many of my friends have recommended this book to me over the years, and it feels good to finally understand (and echo) the unanimous praise。 Humankind has always been interested in immortality。 Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone。 The unbearable lightness of being。 In each story, the conclusion is always that living eternally is not truly living。 The most important things in your life are no longer important if you live infinite lives。 Bringing this concept to Greek and Roman mythology is so intriguing, especially considering the uniquely harsh manner in which Madeleine Miller paints the gods。 My eyes were 100% stuck on this book from beginning to end, and I finished in just a few hours。 It’s uncommon that a book captures my attention in this way straight from the start, and that is simply due to Miller’s engaging storytelling。 It was incredibly easy to relate to Circe’s story。Without spoiling the actual plot, I’d just like to say: How absolutely wonderful that we as humans can feel so deeply。 The highest of highs coupled with the most guttural, painful lows— it’s another reminder that because life is so fragile, it is so meaningful。 Hopefully this will remind more people today of what’s actually worthwhile in this short life of ours。 。。。more

I love Miller’s writing, and Circe is an enchanting retelling of the mythos。 It paints a portrait of a formidable woman, and explores the gruelling complexities of magic, selfhood, and mortality。

5/5 with no questions about it!!! Had absolutely no expectations coming into this book and quite honestly had minimal prior knowledge。 I mean I read the Percy Jackson series but they weren’t my personality (wish they had been though ahahahaha)。 I didn’t even realize Circe was a “real” goddess。 Like when I heard about this book everywhere, I had always just thought Miller had made up a character for the book。 Anyways, all that to say, I just simply didn’t know what I was getting into。 And what a 5/5 with no questions about it!!! I loved the character development of Circe。 She was the epitome of morally grey。 I loved how the book read almost as a biography of her, or as an anthology of stories from her life (I have learned this is known as a character-driven story and will be seeking these out more)。 AND THE WRITING STYLE。 There are not enough good things to say。 Miller painted pictures with her words and they were beautiful。 I thought that each phase of Circe’s story was unique but all spun with a common thread。 The story was very unique and stood out as one of my favorite reads this year。 It also made me reallllllllly want to read Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey, so maybe I’m adding those to my tbr because of it。 I’m definitely adding more Madeline Miller!!! This book had been majorly hyped for me, and I have to say… it really lived up to it。 It’s gonna be one that I want to add to my physical library。 Thrift books see ya soon!!!!! 。。。more

I'm now in love with Circe。 There were so many stories entwined with hers, I was pleasantly surprised。 Because it is in first person, you really feel exactly as she does, you learn to be more empathetic through her。 I have never loved a book, a story, or a character more。 There was so much character development, and she didn't have that "main character protection" that most protagonists do。 She went through so much pain, and was both the protagonist and the antagonist, in some ways。 The ending a I'm now in love with Circe。 There were so many stories entwined with hers, I was pleasantly surprised。 Because it is in first person, you really feel exactly as she does, you learn to be more empathetic through her。 I have never loved a book, a story, or a character more。 There was so much character development, and she didn't have that "main character protection" that most protagonists do。 She went through so much pain, and was both the protagonist and the antagonist, in some ways。 The ending almost made me cry。 Almost。 And that's pretty hard to do for me。 And don't even get me started on the description of her island, Aiaia, I want to live there so bad。 Every aspect of this story was amazing, you really feel like you are enveloped, and you never get bored。 Go read this book, like now。 。。。more

5 STARS This was probably my favorite book of 2022! I absolutely LOVED the retelling of some of the Greek mythology stories from Circe’s perspective。 There is so much action and things happening that I could not put the book down。 I was enthralled from the first page to the last。 So many wild, other-worldly things happen yet Circe seemed so human and relatable。 I really liked the ending。 I cannot wait to read more of her books!

:)

Ngl Madeline miller surprised me once again since her writing style is so engaging and exciting honestly it has that nice vibe that lets you just go on and on for hours reading keeping things interesting without feeling like there’s filler chapters

I really enjoyed this novel! It gives personality to the ancient Greek gods and heroes…stories we’ve heard many times but with a new twist。 I loved the character of Circe and experiencing her growth - learning to love and grow and become strong。 Some PG-13 moments。

1 / 4 : If interested, read。[Banished by the Gods, abrasively-voiced Circe gets up to classic antics, such as transmuting men into pigs。]Lots of structural difficulties to be had setting 70% of a story on a desert island。 And when your character is 70% God, and suffers maybe 30% of the consequences for their actions, the odds of a compelling story start to wane。Pulls on myth, but lacks the prophecy and power that make them compelling in the first place。

3/5I really tried my best to love this book but I just couldn’t。 There were way too many characters it felt like the author just wanted to name drop a list of the biggest Greek gods in myth history for this story。 I also know virtually nothing about Greek mythology, (despite the Greek myth unit we did in Grade 9 English), so I found myself Googling a lot half the time。 But was this of my own ignorance? Was I genuinely supposed to know a lot about Greek mythology before reading the book? It was an okay read。 The pacing was slow and sometimes it caused me to lose my interest。 However, I enjoyed the characters and the story。 It was a nice retelling of Circe。 If you enjoy Greek mythology it’s a nice read from a different perspective
