Summary

In the tradition of modern fairytales like American Gods and Spinning Silver comes a sweeping epic rich in Eastern European folklore--a debut novel about the ancestral hauntings that stalk us, and the uncanny power of story。

The Yaga siblings--Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist--have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway。 But when they learn that they are to receive a mysterious inheritance, the siblings are reunited--only to discover that their bequest isn't land or money, but something far stranger: a sentient house on chicken legs。

Thistlefoot, as the house is called, has arrived from the Yagas' ancestral home in Russia--but not alone。 A sinister figure known only as the Longshadow Man has tracked it to American shores, bearing with him violent secrets from the past: fiery memories that have hidden in Isaac and Bellatine's blood for generations。 As the Yaga siblings embark with Thistlefoot on a final cross-country tour of their family's traveling theater show, the Longshadow Man follows in relentless pursuit, seeding destruction in his wake。 Ultimately, time, magic, and legacy must collide--erupting in a powerful conflagration to determine who gets to remember the past and craft a new future。

An enchanted adventure illuminated by Jewish myth and adorned with lyrical prose as tantalizing and sweet as briar berries, Thistlefoot is an immersive modern fantasy saga by a bold new talent。

As a child, I was fascinated by folklore and fairy tales。 Vassilisa the Beautiful and Baba Yaga lived large in my fantasies。 This satisfying story combines Slavic myth with the real history of the Russian pogroms of a century ago。

I wept at my desk finishing this。 Riveting and beautiful。

3。5 to 4 starsI'm having a hard time rating this book。 Thistlefoot has important themes of the power of storytelling and folklore and how they can be integral in the remembrance and processing of generational trauma。 Told in a fairy-tail fashion and based on Slavic mythology, this is the story of the Yaga siblings and their adventures after inheriting a house on chicken legs。What I loved most about this book is how at times we see aspects of the story told from the viewpoint of the very special 3。5 to 4 starsI'm having a hard time rating this book。 Thistlefoot has important themes of the power of storytelling and folklore and how they can be integral in the remembrance and processing of generational trauma。 Told in a fairy-tail fashion and based on Slavic mythology, this is the story of the Yaga siblings and their adventures after inheriting a house on chicken legs。What I loved most about this book is how at times we see aspects of the story told from the viewpoint of the very special house Baba Yaga lived in。 It is from the house's perspective that we get the continuity from events of the past to the events happening to Isaac and Bellatine。 I loved the magical realism elements in this novel and I love, love loved the end, which was so poignant to the whole of the story。 Even the writing was remarkable at times。 But it was also the writing which really killed this book for me。 Now, I love lyrical writing, purple prose, whatever you want to call it。 This book definitely has that and it really lends to that mythical and folklore feel to this story。 But at times I found it so over the top and melodramatic that it just killed the mood。 I found myself rolling my eyes or just sighing in disgust at some of the phrases and similes Nethercott uses。 I wish I had taken notes to give some examples, but I find annotating while reading pulls me out of the story。 So for writing I give this 3。5 starsFor the story itself, I give this 4 stars 。。。more

This book just drags on and on and on。 Reminds me of the abysmal The Night Circus。 Tons of pointless descriptions, slow as molasses plot, self consciously twee quirkiness just for the sake of it, and no soul behind it。 I DNF’d after 300 pages because I just did not care at all about the shallow and boring main characters。

A work /of/ folklore, and a work /about/ folklore, Thistlefoot is possibly the best work of fantasy released this year。 It drew me into its clutches。 It gave me chills。 It made me cry。 It depicts life, resilience, generational trauma, and the persecution of a people。 It takes you to the theatre。 And to the wilderness。 It is haunting。 And beautiful。 With probably 200 pages full to go, I was horrified by the prospect that it would, in fact, and。 Honestly, just a lovely work, well worth the read。

Honestly I thought this book was pretty good but I kind of expected my action。。。 There were quite a few interesting cliffhangers and mysterious situations but nothing really triggered me。

This was, hands-down, the best book I have read this year。 A sweeping narrative that takes the reader through history, lore, happiness, and heartbreak。 This is on my re-read list for good。

I loved the house's POV chapters。 Those alone are 5 stars。 But everything else I struggled with。 The Yaga siblings and the Longshadow Man are very flat characters and I just didn't care about them。 The prose is nice but the plot dragged。Also, I just want to say that I lost all respect for Bellatine when she (view spoiler)[fucked the puppet。 There is a seriously thin line there, I don't care if Winnifred was into it, she is barely a child, newly sentient, and it feels really gross and predatory t I loved the house's POV chapters。 Those alone are 5 stars。 But everything else I struggled with。 The Yaga siblings and the Longshadow Man are very flat characters and I just didn't care about them。 The prose is nice but the plot dragged。Also, I just want to say that I lost all respect for Bellatine when she (view spoiler)[fucked the puppet。 There is a seriously thin line there, I don't care if Winnifred was into it, she is barely a child, newly sentient, and it feels really gross and predatory to sleep with her when she's barely waking up to the world。 Bellatine has sex with her RIGHT after telling her she might be human。(view spoiler)[ WTF。 (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

My first Baba Yaga story since Christopher Buehlman's 'The Necromancer's House' (but such a different interpretation than his), a family story, a tale of the horrors Russia inflicted on its Jews -- and it all comes together at the end。 Loved it。 The villain is a true monster, the siblings at the heart of the story have powers that are truly original, and the man Isaac is such a snake and yet I liked him。 My first Baba Yaga story since Christopher Buehlman's 'The Necromancer's House' (but such a different interpretation than his), a family story, a tale of the horrors Russia inflicted on its Jews -- and it all comes together at the end。 Loved it。 The villain is a true monster, the siblings at the heart of the story have powers that are truly original, and the man Isaac is such a snake and yet I liked him。 。。。more

I might come back to this but after 167 pages, I’m moving it to my “abandoned” shelf for now。 I like her writing a lot but I just don’t care about the story。

I was so excited to read this book because I've always been captivated by the folktale it's based on, but I really struggled to want to continue with it。 After about 100 pages and continuing to dread picking it up, I decided to give up and move on。 It isn't that it's badly written or that it lacks creativity, but the storylines jump around so frequently I had trouble focusing, and the whole thing is much darker than I anticipated。 It simply wasn't a good fit for me。 I was so excited to read this book because I've always been captivated by the folktale it's based on, but I really struggled to want to continue with it。 After about 100 pages and continuing to dread picking it up, I decided to give up and move on。 It isn't that it's badly written or that it lacks creativity, but the storylines jump around so frequently I had trouble focusing, and the whole thing is much darker than I anticipated。 It simply wasn't a good fit for me。 。。。more

It has some beautiful writing in it and perhaps I will finish it someday, but I stopped at 57%。 It is amazing how many chapters can go by without anything really happening。 As some others have mentioned, it is very very heavy on the descriptions, which means that it takes a long time for anything to happen。 I decided I just need to move onto a new book where the plot moves a little faster!

Baba Yaga's house and a puppet show, what's not to like? Quite a bit, as it turns out。 Which made this good book the wrong book for me just now。 Baba Yaga doesn't come from a happy place, and that's the essence of the book。 Our two human leads are not coping well with the hands they have been dealt, which also glooms us a bit。 But the house, oy, such a character! But then we meet the Enemy, who is relentless, powerful and confident。 And this becomes as much a horror story as fantasy。The story is Baba Yaga's house and a puppet show, what's not to like? So much to say and question on this one! Loved the characters, and their pain and sadness was heartbreaking (always a plus for me if my heart hurts for characters!)。 There were chapters told by the house, which was inventive and enjoyable because here was where there the folklore was told, which was one of my favorite parts。 I won’t say I totally understood everything, and I am left with many questions, but it’s a book that would create great discussion and a re-reading would likely enlighten me So much to say and question on this one! Wow! I was expecting this book to be a fun ride -- and it certainly was -- but I hadn't expected that it would emotionally affect me as deeply as it did。"Generation by generation, we forget。 Only the body remembers。 The body, and the ghosts。 Flickers of flame。"The story mostly takes place in a contemporary timeline following the Yaga siblings, Isaac and Bellatine, in a world almost identical to ours, but with one important difference: memories have the ability to leave a physical mark。 After a f Wow! I was expecting this book to be a fun ride -- and it certainly was -- but I hadn't expected that it would emotionally affect me as deeply as it did。"Generation by generation, we forget。 Only the body remembers。 The body, and the ghosts。 Flickers of flame。"The story mostly takes place in a contemporary timeline following the Yaga siblings, Isaac and Bellatine, in a world almost identical to ours, but with one important difference: memories have the ability to leave a physical mark。 After a flood, houses might grow gills or scales。 During a burglary, buildings might grow a big eyeball。 But the origin story is unclear when the Yaga siblings go to the shipyard to collect their inheritance from their late great great grandmother and find something unexpected in the massive crate that arrived from Kiev: a sentient house atop a pair of chicken legs。 They move in and go on the road, but soon they realize they're being tracked by another new arrival to America's shores from the old country: the Longshadow Man。 As we follow the main timeline in the present, we get flashbacks to the Jewish shtetl where the siblings' great great grandmother Baba Yaga's infamous tale began。This book is whimsical, dark, and packed with echoes from the past。 Through Bellatine's and Isaac's investigation into their family history and the devastating human toll of the pogroms on Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, the book explores how trauma reverberates through space and through generations, altering everything in its wake: the air, objects, people。The prose, which is beautifully written with creative descriptions and metaphors that bring the story to life, adds another layer - it feels like you're at the theater hearing a folktale recounted by a storyteller。 "If a story does its job, it doesn't ever end。 Not really。 But it can change。 This is the nature of folktales。 They shift to fit each teller。 Take whatever form suits the bearer best。 What begins a story of sorrow can be acknowledged, held like a sweetheart to the chest, rocked and sung to。 And then, it can be set down to sleep。 It can become an offering。 A lantern。 An ember to lead you through the dark。"There were some points where the metaphors stretched a bit or it felt a little bit overwritten, but overall this was a fabulous tale。4。75 stars 。。。more

I was unable to enjoy this book。 I think it was just something I was unable to understand。 At times I was confused as to who was telling their part。 I felt it bounced around quite a bit and confused me。 The details were beautifully written。 It just wasn’t for me。

What a really really good story。 I liked the mixture of Jewish/Slavic/Russian fairy tales with the historical reality of the Pogroms。 I liked Issac and Bellatine - their story, dynamic, and talents。 Although I will admit that sometimes I was exasperated with Bellatine during some of her conversations with Issac。 He was such a sympathetic character and thank god the cat is okay。 I enjoyed the chapters 'told' by Thistlefoot - usually that kind of flipping between chapters bugs me but in this case What a really really good story。 I liked the mixture of Jewish/Slavic/Russian fairy tales with the historical reality of the Pogroms。 I liked Issac and Bellatine - their story, dynamic, and talents。 Although I will admit that sometimes I was exasperated with Bellatine during some of her conversations with Issac。 He was such a sympathetic character and thank god the cat is okay。 I enjoyed the chapters 'told' by Thistlefoot - usually that kind of flipping between chapters bugs me but in this case the Thistlefoot chapters not only provided some insight to the past but moved the present along as well。 This was a romping good tale! I so wanted to like this book。 The description of it sounded fantastic and I love retellings of stories。 The biggest problem for me was that it could not capture my interest or keep my attention。 I made it about half way before I had to put it down and walk away; reading it had become a chore。

I’d say it’s more of a 3。5- a 4。 I reallly liked the beginning。 It was interesting。 A little spooky。 And the long shadow man was interesting。 But then the middle of the book was just kind of meh and the small addition of the romance between Bellatine and Winnie was unnecessary and frankly a bit weird?

DNF。 I liked what I read, but the author is so in love with descriptions that plot and character were left by the wayside。 I'll probably pick it up again later, but it's not for me right now。 DNF。 I liked what I read, but the author is so in love with descriptions that plot and character were left by the wayside。 I'll probably pick it up again later, but it's not for me right now。 。。。more

dnf @ 41%it’s interesting that some of the top reviews laud the book for its prose bc tbh i didn’t like it at all lol BUT tbf i’m also simultaneously reading a michael chabon book and that’s tough to measure up tobut seriously, prose felt mediocre/repetitive/fluffy in a way that was pseudo-descriptive but also not at all。 prose definitely not good enough to justify this book’s length, could v much be cut down imo
