‘Therese bebió un sorbo del café que Carol se había dejado en la mesa de la cocina y lo hizo por la parte donde había resto de carmín’。Da que pensar que “la primera novela con personajes homo con final feliz” la tuviera que escribir una de la autoras de suspense mas famosas de la historia y esté narrada en clave de thriller。 Porque ahora， casi setenta años después， la felicidad queer sigue siendo algo endeble y amenazado。En el epílogo Patricia Highsmith cuenta que tanto como a la publicación del ‘Therese bebió un sorbo del café que Carol se había dejado en la mesa de la cocina y lo hizo por la parte donde había resto de carmín’。Da que pensar que “la primera novela con personajes homo con final feliz” la tuviera que escribir una de la autoras de suspense mas famosas de la historia y esté narrada en clave de thriller。 Porque ahora， casi setenta años después， la felicidad queer sigue siendo algo endeble y amenazado。En el epílogo Patricia Highsmith cuenta que tanto como a la publicación del libro como en los años que siguieron a hasta su muerte estuvo recibiendo cartas de multitud de gente del colectivo， de pueblos pequeños y que nunca habían tenido pareja y pocas esperanzas de encontrarla en un entorno hostil。 El contenido casi siempre se podía resumir en una sola palabra: Gracias。 Gracias por escribir una historia sobre dos personas del mismo sexo que se enamoraban y que sobrevivían al final con altas dosis de esperanza。Pues eso Patricia: GRACIAS。 。。。more

Awkward and wonderful， poignant and lovely。 Patricia Highsmith wrote a masterpiece and it's so sad she couldn't publish it in her own name。 The Price of Salt is a fascinating novel about two women who love each other in a society that forbids it。 It's so depressing to think what the world was like in the 50's。 The main character is so interesting and easy to identfy with。 Maybe that's why the story is so touching。I was quite shocked that it was considered a happy end at the time according to Wik Awkward and wonderful， poignant and lovely。 Patricia Highsmith wrote a masterpiece and it's so sad she couldn't publish it in her own name。 The Price of Salt is a fascinating novel about two women who love each other in a society that forbids it。 It's so depressing to think what the world was like in the 50's。 The main character is so interesting and easy to identfy with。 Maybe that's why the story is so touching。I was quite shocked that it was considered a happy end at the time according to Wikipedia。 I thought it sad and vague。 。。。more

I can appreciate the historical importance of this novel， but it was hard to root for the central relationship， which seemed troublingly unequal， and I ended up skimming much of the interminable road trip， which I found strangely boring。 On some level I liked that the reader is granted so little insight into Carol， but since the only character I had access to was Therese， and I found her perspective on the relationship shallow and unpleasantly obsessive， it was hard for me to feel very invested。
