Summary

Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the "spice" melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness。 Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for。。。

When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul's family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined。 And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream。

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction。

i listened to the audiobook, and for a 21hr book, the pacing was incredible!! i was blown away by the speed in which you are fully within the universe。 sometimes i would dread an up coming plot line, thinking one scene would drag after an action filled sequence, but before i could get sick of the journey i would find myself at the destination! truly captivating, i look forward to the second。

Dense but extremely engaging。 Looking forward to the rest!

I am pretty conflicted about this one because there is so much about it that I both love and hate。 I saw the movie at the cinema and was so amazed and fascinated by it that I directly ordered the book。 I ordered both the Kindle and paperback versions because I couldn’t wait to start reading。 However, to finish reading it has taken me forever。 Frank Herbert is a fantastic world builder。 For me, he is right up there with Tolkien。 The universe he created was so unique that it (almost) became the so I am pretty conflicted about this one because there is so much about it that I both love and hate。 I saw the movie at the cinema and was so amazed and fascinated by it that I directly ordered the book。 I ordered both the Kindle and paperback versions because I couldn’t wait to start reading。 However, to finish reading it has taken me forever。 Frank Herbert is a fantastic world builder。 For me, he is right up there with Tolkien。 The universe he created was so unique that it (almost) became the sole reason I kept returning to it。 But I just couldn't connect to the characters。 The way they spoke often made me cringe, and I generally did not find them likable。 Furthermore, the characters' thoughts were all very similar, as if they all were the thoughts of the same person。 In short, they were indistinguishable and lacked their own identities。 For those who haven't read the book, the book consists of 3 parts。 The pacing in the first part is dreadfully slow, and I, therefore, found it hard to get through。 However, if you get through the first part, the pacing in parts 2 & 3 hit that sweet spot, and had some fantastic moments that made me sit on the edge of my seat。 Do I recommend Dune? I’m not sure。 Maybe… 。。。more

Read this because I loved the movie so much, but went in with an open mind。 The world building in this book is great, albeit a little slow in the beginning but still good。 The second part of the book is good and gets a little more interesting, however the last part of it honestly felt rushed to me。 The personal storylines were glossed over and I wish they had more detail to them。 Not enough romance either but this isn’t a romance book so that’s just me! por leer para introducirme ya en la ciencia ficción porque es un clásico, pero a la vez también le he tenido miedo。 Y es que sabéis que llevo poco tiempo en la cifi y que encima siempre he escuchado que es un libro complicado, gordo (aunque esto a mi no me molesta) y que encima es una saga larga。 Pero en cuanto vi que en Travesura realizada había que leer un libro en enero de un libro premiado con más de 500 páginas este se me vino a la cabeza, sobre todo porque ya teníamos la adaptación a película en breves para los Óscars。Con este libro estoy algo nerviosa ya que siempre había escuchado que el primero era una joya y que a partir de ahí va decayendo, aunque hay quien dice que aunque sea así la saga es buena。 Veremos a ver en que parte de la balanza me pongo。Creo que una de las cosas más importantes a destacar de la historia que ha creado el autor es lo centrado que ha estado en crear un mundo rico, original, diferente, y que te llama a querer vivir ahí aunque todos los planetas están completamente en un apocalipsis o destrucción total。 Una de las cosas que me sorprende es como es posible que siendo un mundo tan destrozado sin embargo haya tanta vida。 Siempre el agua es la fuente de la vida y en esta historia todo gira entorno a ella。 Y también a algo que llamamos las especias。 Podemos ver también como el autor se ha centrado en contarnos como es cada planeta, como son sus culturas, sus ropajes, creo que el autor no ha dejado ni un solo detalle suelto para conocer el mundo。 Y es fuerte porque eso a veces ocurre cuando son claramente muchos libros y vas por el 6, o por ahí pero nunca he visto un mundo tan bien creado en el primero de la saga。 No sé si tal vez pensáis como yo, pero a mi dame un mundo increíble inmenso y ya me tienes medio ganada。Este libro tiene una de las cosas que más me gusta encontrarme en los libros, sobre todo de fantasía, es que tengan un harto poder político y social。 Y claro esta de que este libro no se iba a escapar de ello。 Uno de los personajes que más lo mueve es el Duque Leto y he de reconocer que sin duda es uno de mis personajes favoritos。 Una de las cosas que más me gusta, venga voy a abrirme así en canal XD, es que cuando trato a la gente siempre me gusta mucho conocer a gente a las que admire tanto por inteligente, por conocimiento, por como piensa, por su cerebro en si vamos。 Creo que una de las cosas que más me pasa es que para enamorarme debo sentir eso, y por eso lo he sentido como crush a Leto。 Por cumple todo eso, es inteligente, sabe llevar un país, y como no manipular, vamos tanto lo bueno, como lo malo de ser inteligente。 Por cierto se me había olvidado pero también podemos ver como están todos divididos por fracciones en el tema soldados, es decir se ve claramente una escala desde el Duque hasta el más pequeños de los soldados y nadie puede saltarse esos niveles。 Y para terminar he de recordar que en la película que ha salido hace poco de Dune (pincha en el nombre y veras mi reseña de la primera parte)。Una de las pocas cosas que no me ha gustado mucho es que hemos sabido poco de los Harkonnen, y lo poco que hemos visto de ellos me ha constado mucho entender las cosas que pasaban en la historia。 Unos villanos que aunque han hecho cosas, bastante malas por cierto, han sido un poco en la oscuridad。Ahora vamos a hablar de Jessica, la madre de nuestro protagonista que es Paul, la relación entre ellos es bastante estrecha y lo que más interesada me tiene es sus puestos en las Bene Gesserit。 Ya que la madre practica una religión que da «poderes» estas al parir se supone que siempre traen niñas al mundo para que sigan este camino pero Jessica decide que sea un hombre para poder cumplir una profecía。 Este es uno de los caminos que tengo más ganas de seguir descubriendo en los siguientes libros。 Hay pocos personajes femeninos según mi gusto, y Jessica es el único para mi gusto que resalte。 Jessica es de lo mejorcito que encontramos。Con Paul no llegue a conectar porque por eso saltos tan confusos que da la novela, no podemos conectar la evolución que tiene el personaje。 En el primer libro, ya que el libro esta dividido en tres libros pequeños, es un hijo de papa que no sabe hacer mucho por su cuenta, en el segundo lo ves un poco más fuerte pero en el último libro vemos como otro personaje que es egocéntrico, altivo, y que tiene tanta fe puesta en el que nada puede salir mal。 Es un poco raro para mi sentirme identificada con él。Y por último quiero hablar de Duncan Idaho, que es el maestro de espaldas de Paul, y del que recuerdo escenas, sobre todo la de el entreno con espadas del principio que encima sale en la película。 Que es para tatuártela, que estuve rogando por los dioses que fuera Momoa cuando dijo que saldría y al verle en la película fue como morir de gusto!。 Lo clavo!。 Que personajes por favor。¿Releer? No tendría ningún problema en ello。 ¿Recomendarlo? si, claro。Reseña completa en mi blog:Http://perdidaenmismundos。wordpress。com 。。。more

I see the appeal but good grief some parts of this book are a complete drag。 Chapters that don't flow very well, a main character who is a arrogant know it all, way to much fictional politics (like way to much), and not nearly enough action for a book with giant man eating sandworms。 I see the appeal but good grief some parts of this book are a complete drag。 Chapters that don't flow very well, a main character who is a arrogant know it all, way to much fictional politics (like way to much), and not nearly enough action for a book with giant man eating sandworms。 。。。more

Austin Herbert

Perhaps one of the most influential sci-fi books to exist, you can truly see how Frank Herbert’s Dune bleeds into works like Star Wars and many others。 Herbert’s development of his characters and plot is second to none。 The mythos is developed with a syncretic model stemming from Herbert’s vast knowledge of philosophy and religion, thus making Dune’s mythology full of substance。 Overall, a wonderful adventure experience that can be enjoyed by all to dare tackle this behemoth of a book。

I reread this book for a book club, that is why it took so much time。I read this book many years ago and liked it a lot back then。 I now watched the recent movie and wasn't too excited about it, it felt more like a play then a world with breathing living characters。 It was just some rich people wanting more power and trying to survive。 But the book is still pretty great。 Especially the whole political web is very interestingly done, we see the whole story from the perspective of several main pla I reread this book for a book club, that is why it took so much time。I read this book many years ago and liked it a lot back then。 I now watched the recent movie and wasn't too excited about it, it felt more like a play then a world with breathing living characters。 It was just some rich people wanting more power and trying to survive。 But the book is still pretty great。 Especially the whole political web is very interestingly done, we see the whole story from the perspective of several main players, all have their struggle and restriction they have to deal with。 From Paul to the Emperor they have to find balance between interests, which is often not easy。 Another interesting thing is that Herbert bait and switches you many time with an intrigue or a future plan of an protagonist, to then never make it happen, because of some other event, which destroys all those plans。 You already think you know what the conflict later will be just to never see the payoff of those plans。The pacing is very uneven in the book。 In the first part it takes a long time to explore things and to build up to treachery but also to what the Atreides will do on the planet (which doesn't happen) and the in the last part it rushes to it's conclusion resolving so much in the last few pages。 It is pretty wild。 The first part wasn't boring, but I wish he took some of that time and used it in the last part for more detail, but also more feeling。It is a great read and a classic for good reason。 I probably have to give the second part finally a chance。 。。。more

It was interesting。 Slower than I thought it would be。 I liked the back story but it was somewhat hard to connect with the main character。 It did keep you on your toes and not sure who was a main character and who wasn’t。 I didn’t like how everything revolves around sand。

Super overrated! Made it halfway through and it took me months。 It’d put me sleep after 2-3 pages。 Weird writing style。 Doesn’t hold a candle stick to Star Wars。
