i hate short stories but these were pretty good

If it is possible to like someone's writing but not what they're writing about then this was that feeling for me。 Think maybe I missed the overarching point of this one and its many short stories。 If it is possible to like someone's writing but not what they're writing about then this was that feeling for me。 Think maybe I missed the overarching point of this one and its many short stories。 。。。more

Loved Emma’s writing style, respect that the whole point of the story was to dance around what was actually happening within the short stories but it kinda SUCKED。

Unbelievably good。 A powerful treatise on the unsaid, and largely, a stunningly accurate portrait of California culture。 These stories were heartbreaking in just the right way — they perfectly captured the insecurities we all try our hardest to hide。

3。5 starsi did really love this book because i find it comforting to read about people who did some fucked up shit and are figuring out how to keep going, it’s comforting。 this would be 3 stars but i really needed these stories right now so im bumping it up。

2。5 stars。I do think each story was exceptional on a sentence level -- as ever, I am inspired and startled by Cline's attention to detail and the visceral descriptions to disturb "everyday life", as the blurb promises -- but I did not perceive an urgent drive behind why the majority of these stories were written。 These rich details were wasted on stories that levied little impact and characters that were difficult or nearly impossible to connect to。 I was arrested by her novel, and am eager to s 2。5 stars。I do think each story was exceptional on a sentence level -- as ever, I am inspired and startled by Cline's attention to detail and the visceral descriptions to disturb "everyday life", as the blurb promises -- but I did not perceive an urgent drive behind why the majority of these stories were written。 These rich details were wasted on stories that levied little impact and characters that were difficult or nearly impossible to connect to。 I was arrested by her novel, and am eager to see what she does in her next one, but I disagree with her fundamentally on what she believes and presents short stories as。 Most of these did not need to approach or breach the 30-page range。 "Marion" was the collection standout for me, likely because of how it reads as proto-The Girls and because it came what it needed to do and then promptly exited。When news of her next novel drops, I will be there with bells on, but I'll be much more tentative with news of her next short story collection。 。。。more

good prose but repetitive。 pretty much every male protag was a deliberatively cruel person who's entire inner narrative consisted of vague confusion as to why their lives were so shitty and nobody liked them。 best story was a/s/l, protag revels in the wack shit she does which was a pleasant change of pace。 good prose but repetitive。 pretty much every male protag was a deliberatively cruel person who's entire inner narrative consisted of vague confusion as to why their lives were so shitty and nobody liked them。 best story was a/s/l, protag revels in the wack shit she does which was a pleasant change of pace。 。。。more

All these stories reveal the shadow of one's humanity。 I wanted more of the story each time which was kind of a tease in the best kind of way。 All these stories reveal the shadow of one's humanity。 I wanted more of the story each time which was kind of a tease in the best kind of way。 。。。more

This is a difficult book to review。 It’s a collection of stories about unhappy people living unfulfilled lives。 While the writing is good, sometimes very good, and the characters are extremely realistic, I had a hard time getting into each story and it once I did, the story just ended。 Emma Cline is a good writer, but it feels like she doesn’t have a lot to say。

Only had time to read 6 out of the 10 short stories but they were all amazing!! My faves were what can you do with a general and arcadiaok update i read all of them except A/S/L and *chefs kiss*

In 2016, Emma Cline debuted with her first novel, The Girls, a fictional meditation on the Manson Girls。 I remember at the time running pretty lukewarm on it, impressed with her style if not the book as a whole, but Daddy has made me want to go back and re-evaluate the book。 Daddy Stories contains some of Cline’s best work, stories of cool incident and the passage of time。 There’s the contrast of stories like Los Angeles, of a young woman trying to kickstart her acting career, with Son of Friedm In 2016, Emma Cline debuted with her first novel, The Girls, a fictional meditation on the Manson Girls。 I remember at the time running pretty lukewarm on it, impressed with her style if not the book as a whole, but Daddy has made me want to go back and re-evaluate the book。 Daddy Stories contains some of Cline’s best work, stories of cool incident and the passage of time。 There’s the contrast of stories like Los Angeles, of a young woman trying to kickstart her acting career, with Son of Friedman, a story about an aged veteran at the end of his career and life looking down at the new generation, a man forgotten。 She sometimes can end her stories so abruptly, but always with a grim finality。 Her characters exist in a world where death and life share equal measure of tragedy。 That’s not to give the impression that Cline is humorless or melodramatic。 Her stories are actually quite funny most of the time, a gallows humor to be sure, but one that hits a nerve。 She has an effortless ability to switch between dark comedy, and abject horror so smoothly that you don’t even notice before it’s too late。 Maybe it’s because hers was the last book I read, but I can’t help but compare her to Sally Rooney。 They’re more or less contemporaries of each other, yet one has enjoyed far more success than the other and what I think plainly separates the two is Cline’s voice feels much more textured and complete。 。。。more

Nie všetky poviedky sa mi páčili, bavili ma alebo som im pochopila, ale to je OK。 This is the way so zbierkami poviedok。 Veľmi mi sedí štýl, akým Emma Cline píše a proste si prečítam všetko, čo napíše。 Myslím, že romány jej idú lepšie než poviedky。 Takmer každá poviedka obsahovala líniu, ktorá bola len veľmi vágne načrtnutá, hoci bola pre postavy a príbeh veľmi dôležitá。 Prišlo mi to geniálne, aj keď maximálne frustrujúce。 :D

Second time listening to this。 None of these stories make any sense, they're little to no context, and they're hard to follow, up untill the few last sentences。 I gave it another shot in fear maybe I missed out on something grand or deeper meaning, but I really don't think I did。 I can barely make it through to be honest。 Second time listening to this。 None of these stories make any sense, they're little to no context, and they're hard to follow, up untill the few last sentences。 I gave it another shot in fear maybe I missed out on something grand or deeper meaning, but I really don't think I did。 I can barely make it through to be honest。 。。。more

What I found really gripping about these stories is that there are these massive, unspoken silences in all of them, lounging around pretending they aren’t the whole point。 It’s extremely clever but not all gimmicky。 Very much excited for whatever Emma Cline does next。

I Don’t know what I just read????? These stories had neither beginning nor ending。 They were just as if you popped into someone’s mind randomly and accessed their thoughts。 Or like reading book jackets but never the book。 Did not enjoy。 ☹️
