Summary

'Follow your heart and speak your truth。'

For Samantha Miller's young fans - her 'girls' - she's everything they want to be。 She's an oracle, telling them how to live their lives, how to be happy, how to find and honour their 'truth'。

And her career is booming: she's just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she's appearing at sell-out events。

Determined to speak her truth and bare all to her adoring fans, she's written an essay about her sexual awakening as a teenager, with her female best friend, Lisa。 She's never told a soul but now she's telling the world。 The essay goes viral。

But then - years since they last spoke - Lisa gets in touch to say that she doesn't remember it that way at all。 Her memory of that night is far darker。 It's Sam's word against Lisa's - so who gets to tell the story? Whose 'truth' is really a lie?

'You put yourself on that pedestal, Samantha。 You only have yourself to blame。'

Riveting, compulsive and bold, IDOL interrogates our relationship with our heroes and explores the world of online influencers, asking how well we can ever really know those whose carefully curated profiles we follow online。 And it asks us to consider how two memories of the same event can differ, and how effortlessly we choose which stories to believe。

‘Is that your story now? Is that what you’re telling yourself?’ For any given scenario, there is always the one and only truth, but what if your truth doesn't match the truth? Louise O'Neill tackles this topic in rather surprising ways in Idol。You know how Emma says, “Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised or a little mistaken。” Well, Samantha "Sam" Miller takes it to a whole new level。 She has cra ‘Is that your story now? Louise O'Neill tackles this topic in rather surprising ways in Idol。You know how Emma says, “Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised or a little mistaken。” Well, Samantha "Sam" Miller takes it to a whole new level。 She has crafted a career for herself as an influencer, but her life and celebrity status starts crumbling rapidly when a rape allegation made by her best friend is exposed。A lie told often enough will become the truth。 When you tell yourself something enough times (and when you’re making six figure dollars for it), you start to believe in it yourself。 Louise O'Neill brutally exposes Sam and this empire that she has built on her lies, which is quite shaky because lies are funny in that way。 The premise of being a pathological liar is further heightened because these are big lies, not lies about how many cigarettes you've had or infidelity。 These are lies built on rape。 The expositions are simply brilliantly paced out, and soon the reader is left grabbing at air for anything to justify Sam’s behavior。The premise of rape is quite different here as it involves two women。 It's quite easy for people to take sides of either the victim or perpetrator if it's a woman and a man respectively。 But how do you decide if it's two women and there's no evidence for the truth? Do you still stick to your conviction of supporting the "victim"? Ideologies are convenient until they turn against you and it tells a lot about our rape discussions on social media and a culture where instead of reporting crimes, women fester with their wounds before searching for acceptance from strangers。 I've removed this from my LGBT shelf because there is no romantic or sexual pleasure that motivates the rape, neither are the women on the LGBT spectrum。A significant theme of this story is the exposition of celebrities and influencers, the people we place on pedestals–our idols。 It's actually scary and atrocious how the general public does not give two farts about actual social workers supporting with rape survivors emotionally and with legal prosecution, helping teenagers out of depression, abusive households and childhood trauma。 No, people prefer to watch "beautiful", "slim", "white women" preach about body positivity and being braver。 This book covers a lot of ground without ever being preachy, weaving the message into a strong, fascinating psychological spiral。 ‘But this is my truth, Mom。 You have to respect that。’‘If it’s not the truth, what’s the point?’ 。。。more

Samantha Miller's career as an online wellness guru is booming。 Her new book is top of the bestseller list and she's selling out wellness events to help her followers live their best lives。 But when she publishes an essay about a sexual experience she had as a teen, her friend gets in touch to say that Sam's account isn't the way she remembers it, and her world comes crashing down。 This is a really original, compelling story which takes a look at some massively important and relevent topics - th Samantha Miller's career as an online wellness guru is booming。 Her new book is top of the bestseller list and she's selling out wellness events to help her followers live their best lives。 But when she publishes an essay about a sexual experience she had as a teen, her friend gets in touch to say that Sam's account isn't the way she remembers it, and her world comes crashing down。 This is a really original, compelling story which takes a look at some massively important and relevent topics - the status of online influencers, trial by public opinion, cancel culture, and the issue of consent and sexual abuse。 I found myself dying to see which way this was going to go and find out who was telling the truth。 I'm not sure I've ever read a book where the characters have been so unlikeable and unreliable, and yet still enjoyed the story as much as I did。 Infact this likely added to how compelling the story was - a testament to O'Neill's writing。 While (intentionally) uncomfortable and unsettling in parts, it was really thought provoking。 It's being marketed as a thriller which I'm not sure I'd necessarily agree with - I'd consider it more an engaging and gripping contemporary fiction。 An ideal page turner for Summer! This book was high on my own TBR for this year and it didn't disappoint。3。5 stars rounded up。 。。。more

Wow, wow, wow, wow!!!! I read this in one sitting, I could not put it down。 Gripping, intriguing, and thrilling, this book examines memory, truth, the nature of social media, cancel culture, and celebrity and does so in such a fascinating way。 I was intrigued by the synopsis before the book was released and I was not disappointed when I read it。 The characters are flawed, unlikeable, and real which is what makes the book so great。 Definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone。

What a waste of time。 Read Such a Fun Age instead, it is the book IDOL tried to be but failed。

I can't remember the last time a book had such a hold on my attention。 (view spoiler)[ The last page was chilling。 My one complaint is that I turned the page to find a deleted scene, exclusive to Eason apparently。 I was thrilled until I read it and found that it was fairly pointless so probably deleted for a reason。 This kind of reduced the effect of the ending and I may have to buy a different copy so I don't have this experience again。 (hide spoiler)] I can't remember the last time a book had such a hold on my attention。 (view spoiler)[ The last page was chilling。 My one complaint is that I turned the page to find a deleted scene, exclusive to Eason apparently。 I was thrilled until I read it and found that it was fairly pointless so probably deleted for a reason。 This kind of reduced the effect of the ending and I may have to buy a different copy so I don't have this experience again。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Well that was a lot to process。 It's not often that I can feel so conflicted about a character。 If this was based on character development alone I would give the book 5 stars because I really felt like I was Sam。 I could feel the invisible taint, the manic energy, the panic。 The way people reacted to her and her inner thoughts, it was really good。 The story was a little repetitive, and the sexual assault related morality was a little heavy handed, it just didn't quite make 5 stars for me。 I woul Well that was a lot to process。 It's not often that I can feel so conflicted about a character。 If this was based on character development alone I would give the book 5 stars because I really felt like I was Sam。 I could feel the invisible taint, the manic energy, the panic。 The way people reacted to her and her inner thoughts, it was really good。 The story was a little repetitive, and the sexual assault related morality was a little heavy handed, it just didn't quite make 5 stars for me。 I would definitely still recommend this book。 Lots of trigger warnings and not a feel good book at all, but it was engaging and intense and just。。。 how can someone write a character with equal parts compassionate love and pure hatred? Fuck it I'm giving it 5 stars because Sam felt like a real person and I've read way too many books with flat protagonists lately。 Louise O'Neil, I stayed up until 2am to finish this book and then I spent 20 minutes trying to put my thoughts into something other than "what the fuck"。 I'm going to go download everything else that you've written now。 Thank you。 。。。more

What happens when an inspirational leader is knocked off her pedestal by an allegation of abuse? For once its a female not male。 The twists as she goes back to her home town to correct the narrative。 Going back to high school rivalries and loves。 A roller coaster of emotions and memories from different perspectives。

I really enjoyed this book, and raced through it。 The story contained a bit of everything including betrayal, trolling on social media, followers on social media, wellness gurus, addiction, and love in all its many forms。 It could easily have been a frothy beach read but I felt the author actually discussed some really important contemporary issues in a well thought out way contained in a very readable story。thank you to netgalley and Random House for an advance copy of this book

Sam is a social media star, riding high in popularity, who then struggles to cope when her carefully curated world crashes down around her。 The book takes a wry look at influencer culture, fame and the self-help industry, and examines toxic friendship and the pitfalls of telling “your truth”。Its well written, and sharply observed but I just felt a bit ambivalent about it all - perfectly readable but perhaps not the perfect book for me! Perceived truths from the turn of the century, when they were all teenagers, threaten now to engulf her public persona。 It has to be sorted and to that end she is quite willing to manipulate history and friends。Sam is a complex mix。 She has struggled to overcome the damage caused at the hands of her parents, a refrain for her that is on repeat, and she will still rail at her mother for misdemeanours, both past and present。 Sam goes on to reflect on her time when she suffered eating disorders and drug fuelled encounters and acted out her unhappiness。 Basically, she is a mess, struggling to hold it together, and her sharply constructed and caring carapace hides untold emotional and psychological issues。 She has a therapist, who is on call and will fit her in at the drop of a hat - but Sam still can't get her head around the possibility that she herself had "。。 been a problem, someone who had been pitied rather than envied。。"Her description of the specific encounter, which has led to the crisis in her life, that in turn has caused her so much derision and public harm, is set in stone in her own mind。 She argues her point, stating that you can't, she says, "hold someone responsible for what they do when they are drunk。" Well, er, yes, you can。 Imagine what people could get away with if they were exonerated because they were drunk? And this is where, to my mind, the novel - called a 'thriller' which it really isn't - falls a bit flat。 The child-like voice of the central character is whiny and grating and it's really rather tedious spending time in her presence, as she blasts through her past and comes face to face with the present。 She can be such an abrasive and self-referring person, who essentially craves care and love, you can really feel that。This novel is garnering a lot of positive reviews。 It is certainly very well written。 I just feel that Sam hadn't been sufficiently fleshed out in a fully cogent and convincing way to carry the level of psychological damage she has experienced over her lifetime。 I suspect the story is aimed at a specific demographic and I don't fall into that category。 Check out the other reviews and make your own mind up。And you know what, the book cover really doesn't - to my mind - reflect the content, I would anticipate something very different when choosing the novel as a reader, based on the cover and NOT somewhere where it snows a lot as it does in fictional Bennford! It's misleading。 。。。more

Samantha is a social media 'influencer' with millions of fans。 She publishes an essay of an encounter with her bff from school and her friend denies it happened that way。 Samantha needs to salvage her reputation and returns to her hometown to try to fix it。 This was an interesting read on just how someone can believe their own press and how quickly things can fall apart。 Samantha is a social media 'influencer' with millions of fans。 She publishes an essay of an encounter with her bff from school and her friend denies it happened that way。 Samantha needs to salvage her reputation and returns to her hometown to try to fix it。 This was an interesting read on just how someone can believe their own press and how quickly things can fall apart。 。。。more
