Summary

"Several people have asked about Salvation, so a (very) brief summary。。。 Set in 2204, an abandoned alien spaceship is discovered 90 light years from Earth, in an uninhabited star system, by the first human starship to reach that far。 A team of politically connected officials from various factions, all of whom have their own agenda, are sent to assess if it is a threat。 What could possibly go wrong??"

End of Act I。The above, is of utmost importance if you are not familiar with the works of Peter F。 Hamilton。 A trilogy by this author is not three stories following one after the other。 It is one story。 30% of this "book" means you are 10% into the story。 Just getting started。The second most important thing to know is that he is without equal in hard science fiction and world building, with characters that come to life through backstories and interactions。 An incredible imagination。 As per Ken F End of Act I。The above, is of utmost importance if you are not familiar with the works of Peter F。 Hamilton。 A trilogy by this author is not three stories following one after the other。 It is one story。 30% of this "book" means you are 10% into the story。 Just getting started。The second most important thing to know is that he is without equal in hard science fiction and world building, with characters that come to life through backstories and interactions。 An incredible imagination。 As per Ken Follett: "The owner of the most powerful imagination in science fiction。。。"You don't need to know anything more。 Enjoy! 。。。more

Not gonna lie, this was a tough one to follow。 I liked the last third because the story was advancing quicker。 But the first two thirds just seemed to drag on with no point。 It's a bummer too, as I had been looking forward to this one。 Maybe down the road。。。。I'll give the sequels a chance。 Not gonna lie, this was a tough one to follow。 I liked the last third because the story was advancing quicker。 But the first two thirds just seemed to drag on with no point。 It's a bummer too, as I had been looking forward to this one。 Maybe down the road。。。。I'll give the sequels a chance。 。。。more

This book was not at all what I expected, and required a lot of mental effort to stay engaged, but was untimately worth it。 I think this is one of those books that is amazing if are able to focus on it, but if you're at all distracted it gets a little difficult。 The stories that the characters were telling got progressively more boring to me, in terms of storyline, but I really enjoyed the progressive world-building that they provided, which is why I worked through it。 Now that this lengthy expo This book was not at all what I expected, and required a lot of mental effort to stay engaged, but was untimately worth it。 I think this is one of those books that is amazing if are able to focus on it, but if you're at all distracted it gets a little difficult。 The stories that the characters were telling got progressively more boring to me, in terms of storyline, but I really enjoyed the progressive world-building that they provided, which is why I worked through it。 Now that this lengthy exposition is complete, I'm interested to see where the rest of the story goes with book #2。 。。。more

Finishing Leviathan Falls put me on a sci-fi kick, which is rare。 This has been on my to-read list since it came out to rave reviews, so figured now's the time to dive in。 Right up until the end I was considering giving this three stars and not finishing the series as I wavered between being bored by it vs engrossed。 However, the end really packed a punch so I'm hooked and heading to store *now* to pick up the next one。 The best bits by far were the flashback stories and seeing the progression o Finishing Leviathan Falls put me on a sci-fi kick, which is rare。 This has been on my to-read list since it came out to rave reviews, so figured now's the time to dive in。 Right up until the end I was considering giving this three stars and not finishing the series as I wavered between being bored by it vs engrossed。 However, the end really packed a punch so I'm hooked and heading to store *now* to pick up the next one。 The best bits by far were the flashback stories and seeing the progression of the world and technology to the "present" vs the bits in the "future" which were really jarring。 There was a good little mystery in those flashbacks, set to the backdrop of a really imaginative future civilization。I struggled a bit with the writing style and couldn't really wrap my head around most of the imagery, which contributed to being unable to focus on the book at times while I was reading it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This one definitely reads as a very slow setup to a trilogy- I'm very hopeful that books 2 & 3 have more action but I was ultimately pleased with the ending。Salvation alternates between three different timelines (which I'm not always a fan of)。 The crux of the plot is that there is a team of scientists setting out to investigate a remote alien contact。 This main timeline is interspersed with reflections of each of the team members from their past as it relates to their work & investigation。 The This one definitely reads as a very slow setup to a trilogy- I'm very hopeful that books 2 & 3 have more action but I was ultimately pleased with the ending。Salvation alternates between three different timelines (which I'm not always a fan of)。 The crux of the plot is that there is a team of scientists setting out to investigate a remote alien contact。 This main timeline is interspersed with reflections of each of the team members from their past as it relates to their work & investigation。 The third timeline follows a very Starship Troopers like, last hope for humanity enclave that are setting out to eliminate an unnamed alien threat。My favorite part of Salvation wasn't everyone's story/timeline, but the glimpses into the futuristic tech that we get。 Humans are able to modified by alien DNA in ways that can prevent aging/maintain good health, portals/linked gates are commonplace around the inhabited galaxy making it possible for humans to commute across the planet/galaxy for work or pleasure within a matter of minutes。 I particularly enjoyed the story that included portals in a home where every room contained a different portal door to a vacation spot or the moon。The pacing was very slow, but I think the setup of switching between narratives made it feel that way for me。 The last 5-10 pages are what will carry me through reading the rest of the series- really enjoyed the revelation right at the end。 Hopeful that books 2 & 3 are action packed with the 'current' timeline of humanity fighting an intergalactic war of survival。 。。。more

A slower start than other trilogies from Hamilton that I've read, but it's worth it。 For the first 150 or so pages, I was confused as to what I was reading and wondering if I was going to enjoy this one。 The shifting protagonist viewpoints and timelines made it confusing and difficult for me to connect。 Most of this novel feels like the author had written a number of short stories to test the water of a new universe he was constructing, and then strung them together into this nobel。 However, onc A slower start than other trilogies from Hamilton that I've read, but it's worth it。 For the first 150 or so pages, I was confused as to what I was reading and wondering if I was going to enjoy this one。 The shifting protagonist viewpoints and timelines made it confusing and difficult for me to connect。 Most of this novel feels like the author had written a number of short stories to test the water of a new universe he was constructing, and then strung them together into this nobel。 However, once one group got past their early stage, and I came to understand the way the book was constructed, I enjoyed it, and went on to the rest of the trilogy。 。。。more

Abslutely mindblowing, reminds me of a long time ago when I read some great SciFy books, one trilogy was actually from Peter F。 Hammilton then as well。 It surely starts slow and took me more than half of the book to get to the point where I could not put it down anymore, from there it was pure joy to read it。 I love the surprises and the interesting characters, its just relatable and a future that might really come。 It kind of explains why there are not aliens all around us and it makes you thin Abslutely mindblowing, reminds me of a long time ago when I read some great SciFy books, one trilogy was actually from Peter F。 Hammilton then as well。 It surely starts slow and took me more than half of the book to get to the point where I could not put it down anymore, from there it was pure joy to read it。 I love the surprises and the interesting characters, its just relatable and a future that might really come。 It kind of explains why there are not aliens all around us and it makes you think。 。。。more

I couldn't stop reading this book。 I love the blend of all the ideas in this book。 It's like Hamilton took aspects of everything he has ever done and wrapped aspects into this。 Terrifying aliens, fascinating implications of future technology。 All the stuff you expect from him。 Feels similar to hyperion。 Who done it style story。 Big twists and turns。 Loved it。 In the middle of the second book now。 I couldn't stop reading this book。 I love the blend of all the ideas in this book。 It's like Hamilton took aspects of everything he has ever done and wrapped aspects into this。 Terrifying aliens, fascinating implications of future technology。 All the stuff you expect from him。 Feels similar to hyperion。 Who done it style story。 Big twists and turns。 Loved it。 In the middle of the second book now。 。。。more

I'm gonna need time to process this book, but wow, I adored this。My eyes crossed a few times whilst reading this dense science-fiction beast, but it never lost me and everything came together in a way that was just so satisfying to read。 It wasn't what I expected at all, and I always appreciate that。The ending broke my brain and now I cannot wait to jump into the sequel, Salvation Lost。 I'm gonna need time to process this book, but wow, I adored this。My eyes crossed a few times whilst reading this dense science-fiction beast, but it never lost me and everything came together in a way that was just so satisfying to read。 It wasn't what I expected at all, and I always appreciate that。The ending broke my brain and now I cannot wait to jump into the sequel, Salvation Lost。 。。。more

I liked this book。 There was a LOT going on so it was a little hard to get into trying to keep track of all the characters and storylines。 The world-building was excellent and future-earth was less grim than a lot of futuristic novels。 Now that I know who everyone is, I’m ready for the second book! :)One interesting point of note is that before the book starts there’s a recommendation to listen to a soundtrack while reading。 I accessed the soundtrack through Alexa (you can also find it online)。 I liked this book。 There was a LOT going on so it was a little hard to get into trying to keep track of all the characters and storylines。 The world-building was excellent and future-earth was less grim than a lot of futuristic novels。 Now that I know who everyone is, I’m ready for the second book! :)One interesting point of note is that before the book starts there’s a recommendation to listen to a soundtrack while reading。 I accessed the soundtrack through Alexa (you can also find it online)。 While I love the concept and had never heard of it before, I ended up giving up on the soundtrack because it was too stressful。 The music was ominous and suspenseful。 。。。more

Very slow burnerWill reserve full judgement for when I’ve read all three parts but PFH is getting slower and slower to tell a story。 Compare this directly to The Reality Dysfunction and I’m sure you’ll agree that this is nowhere near as compelling a page turner as that incredible piece of work。 Let’s see what Pts。 2 & 3 bring。

This eventually got good about half-way through, so it loses a star for meandering around for too long。 Really excited to see where this goes, especially with so much being revealed in the last few pages。 It's a much lesser story than A Hole in the Sky, which is the first of the Arkship Trilogy, but held my attention sufficiently to still be intrigued as to where it goes。 I do have to criticise the ridiculous gender pronouns used here。 Aside from mirroring the pointless and narcissistic fad in t This eventually got good about half-way through, so it loses a star for meandering around for too long。 Really excited to see where this goes, especially with so much being revealed in the last few pages。 It's a much lesser story than A Hole in the Sky, which is the first of the Arkship Trilogy, but held my attention sufficiently to still be intrigued as to where it goes。 I do have to criticise the ridiculous gender pronouns used here。 Aside from mirroring the pointless and narcissistic fad in the real world, it is jarring and awkward to read。 Basically there is a race of humans who cycle between male and female over the course of their lives。 Surely when they're female, she/her, and when they're male he/she is sufficient? Because they are MALE and FEMALE? Just utterly pointless and not something I would expect in the output of an otherwise excellent author。 You can ignore this but it takes a bit of effort。 Overall, flawed but enjoyable。 Bring on the next one! 。。。more

Although this novel jumps back and forth with different people's stories, it slowly fills in the blanks of why and how that lead to a conclusion that has me very much looking forward to the next book in the series。 Although this novel jumps back and forth with different people's stories, it slowly fills in the blanks of why and how that lead to a conclusion that has me very much looking forward to the next book in the series。 。。。more

This was the most enjoyable read of the trilogy, though it took a moment to fully buy into the structure。 I felt like I had been thrown into the deep end with all of the names and concepts tossed at me in the first few chapters, but once Callum's chapter ended I realized what was going on and grew to appreciate the style of storytelling here。 This is an excellent beginning to a still really good trilogy This was the most enjoyable read of the trilogy, though it took a moment to fully buy into the structure。 I felt like I had been thrown into the deep end with all of the names and concepts tossed at me in the first few chapters, but once Callum's chapter ended I realized what was going on and grew to appreciate the style of storytelling here。 This is an excellent beginning to a still really good trilogy 。。。more

Not my jam。 The worldbuilding is A Focus。 Like, let’s have a thought experiment and then build a plot/characters around it rather than vice versa。 Definitely a trilogy starter, not a standalone。 It's also very timeline jumpy, if you like that in a book。 Some of the flashback chapters (Callum, Kandara) felt like they could have been edited down to half length。 Not my jam。 The worldbuilding is A Focus。 Like, let’s have a thought experiment and then build a plot/characters around it rather than vice versa。 Definitely a trilogy starter, not a standalone。 It's also very timeline jumpy, if you like that in a book。 Some of the flashback chapters (Callum, Kandara) felt like they could have been edited down to half length。 。。。more

Another fun world building sci fi masterclass from Peter Hamilton。 There are two timelines at work and while I greatly prefer one to the other, they are both interesting and I’m really curious how they’ll come together。 If you like Hamilton’s other books I think you’ll enjoy these as well。

I don't normally like "hard" sci-fi, and I shy away from sci-fi series, but — wow, I enjoyed Salvation! Hamilton weaves a suspenseful story around several mysteries, with humanlike characters that are easy to bond to。Salvation portrays a remarkably believable near-future Earth, with many of the things you would expect in 100-200 years。。。 plus aliens。 It's a very interesting world, and done well。Despite being part of a series, I felt it ends well。 I got the closure that I was looking for, even th I don't normally like "hard" sci-fi, and I shy away from sci-fi series, but — wow, I enjoyed Salvation!
