Summary

The cast of characters are straight out of a circus and whatever you do don’t go into that cellar…It’s very hard to describe this novel without giving anything away but it’s strange, quirky and quirky some more。 It’s not a book that comes together well though and by the end I did feel unsatisfied and ultimately confused。The setting is great however and I think the descriptions of the landscape and the effects this has on the characters is very well done。 There’s a few snippets of life away from the mountains too so you get a good overall picture of the area。 I’m just not sure I got what the rest of the novel was trying to say。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was unpredictable for me。 Just when I thought that I know something。。。 the only thing that I was sure of was the fact that Simon Keller is crazy。 Marlene was brave and I’m truly happy that her story ended well。 The ending was wonderful and surprising (like half of the book)。

Well that went nothing like I expected from the beginning。 Won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I thought it was great and how no idea how it would ultimately end。 Really enjoyed his first book, really enjoyed this second one。 Roll on number 3。

But the relationship is beyond weird。)The Trusted Man, the hit-man Wegner hires to find and kill his wife, Marlene。 This guy doesn’t know when to stop。 He agrees to kill somebody and to do it anyway even if paid to back off。 By the end I was seriously annoyed with both Lissy, Keller, and the Trusted Man。 Trauma is at the base of the central characters’ actions and their approach to life。 Everything is determined by what happened to them as child en。’Twas ever thus, of course。4 Stars because whatever the annoyances, he’s a good writer。 。。。more

A heart pounding mixture of thriller and some horror。 This novel kept my interest all through。 The story covers a period of some 50 years, from WWII to the '90's。 A young woman in Italy flees her criminal husband, a certain Herr Wegener, stealing a bag of sapphires。 On her way north [to Austria perhaps?] she wrecks her car in the mountains and is rescued by a very eccentric--[even delusional?]--Tyrolean peasant pig farmer, Simon Keller, who restores her to health。 Meanwhile her husband hires a h A heart pounding mixture of thriller and some horror。 This novel kept my interest all through。 The story covers a period of some 50 years, from WWII to the '90's。 A young woman in Italy flees her criminal husband, a certain Herr Wegener, stealing a bag of sapphires。 On her way north [to Austria perhaps?] she wrecks her car in the mountains and is rescued by a very eccentric--[even delusional?]--Tyrolean peasant pig farmer, Simon Keller, who restores her to health。 Meanwhile her husband hires a hitman called the Trusted Man, supposedly a master at his craft, to find and kill her。 When the husband, Wegener, finds out she is pregnant with his baby, he wants to call off the murder。 The Trusted Man is inexorable and does find her with thought to take her life。 The denouement is chilling, involving the hitman, Simon, and Marlene, and a vicious boar-like pig who has driven much of the story。Highly recommended。 I thank LibraryThing for a copy of an ARC。 。。。more

This is the first “thriller” I have *read。* It felt like a TV show I would watch, or a movie I would not watch (I don’t like scary movies, ha!)。 The plot was actually very interesting, especially the second half; and even though I don’t read many thrillers, the character Simon and the background of how he came to be how he is (ie the deal with Lissy) seemed very original。 I read the last 150 pages in less than 24 hours (and I have three kids age 5 and under here so that’s really fast for me) bec This is the first “thriller” I have *read。* It felt like a TV show I would watch, or a movie I would not watch (I don’t like scary movies, ha!)。 The plot was actually very interesting, especially the second half; and even though I don’t read many thrillers, the character Simon and the background of how he came to be how he is (ie the deal with Lissy) seemed very original。 I read the last 150 pages in less than 24 hours (and I have three kids age 5 and under here so that’s really fast for me) because I wanted to know what happened。 So 3 good stars for plot and how the author managed to bring me from “I don’t like this book” around to “I need to finish this book!”Most of what I didn’t like about this book was the writing style。 Granted, it is translated。 So, I can’t say for sure whether I don’t like this author’s style, or I don’t like the way it was translated, or there are language and/or cultural disconnects that don’t allow me to read and appreciate this book in its truest form。 But all that being said, the style was a bit choppy, and I hate to say it but also boring。 “He did X, he did Y。 He felt Z。” And again, maybe that’s par for the course with this genre, and I’m just unused to it。 I tend to prefer beautiful and/or witty prose, and this just wasn’t even close to what I’m used to reading。The other thing that was just “too much” for me was how many sociopaths were crossing paths! And Simon-and-Lissy was downright disturbing by the end。 So that’s a personal preference thing, but in all honesty, I wanted to erase from my mind some of the images and voices I got in my head from this book。 Overall, I don’t regret reading it, but I won’t be going around recommending it to anyone, either。 。。。more

I found this book to be a bit strange and I'm thinking I'll chalk it up to the fact that I read a translated version。 I just found it a tad in the reading, not comfortable with the way it jumped around at points which made it read in an odd manner and being interspersed with vernacular that I'm just not used to。 Not sure if this was a sequel to the author's previous book, but realized after I read this that there was acclaim for his first one with the same setting。 Not my cup of tea, but from th I found this book to be a bit strange and I'm thinking I'll chalk it up to the fact that I read a translated version。 I just found it a tad in the reading, not comfortable with the way it jumped around at points which made it read in an odd manner and being interspersed with vernacular that I'm just not used to。 Not sure if this was a sequel to the author's previous book, but realized after I read this that there was acclaim for his first one with the same setting。 Not my cup of tea, but from the reviews obviously others enjoyed it。 。。。more
