Summary

All magic comes at a price, but love was never part of the bargain 。 。 。

The look he was giving her。 Serilda had never been looked at like that before 。 。 。 The intensity。
The heat。 The raw astonishment。 He was going to kiss her。

Cursed by the god of lies, a miller's daughter has developed a talent for storytelling - but are all of her tales as false as they appear?

When one of Serilda's stories draws the attention of the devastating Erlking, she finds herself swept away into a world of enchantment, where ghouls prowl the earth, and ravens track her every move。 The king locks Serilda in a castle dungeon and orders her to spin straw into gold, or be killed for lying。 In despair, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious young man to her aid。 And he agrees to help her, for a price。 But love wasn't meant to be part of the bargain。

A compulsive read, and as bewitchingly good as you'd expect from a YA bestselling author。 You will stay up all night reading this。

Gilded glitters as brightly as the stories and gold that Serilda and Gild spin' Kate Corr (The Corr Sisters), authors of The Witch's Kiss trilogy and A Throne of Swans duology

Thank you Macmillan for the free arc via edelweiss。 I am a sucker for the bad boy。 I wanted Serilda and the Erlking to get together。 This was an interesting take on Rumpelstilskin。 Enjoyed the fairy tales within the book。 I felt such despair and was not sure how Serilda was every going to get away。 Sadly, the suspense continues as there will be a sequel。

Gilded is a dark amalgamation of the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale with mythology。 As enticing as the summary sounded, the actual execution of the book left something to be desired。 As with Meyer’s other books, this one weighs in at about 500 pages。 Staying motivated to continue to read was challenging, due to the slow moving plot。 The characters felt flat, which also created a sense of the book dragging。 The feel of this one is a little similar to Heartless, in that it’s darker than the Lunar Chro Gilded is a dark amalgamation of the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale with mythology。 As enticing as the summary sounded, the actual execution of the book left something to be desired。 As with Meyer’s other books, this one weighs in at about 500 pages。 Staying motivated to continue to read was challenging, due to the slow moving plot。 The characters felt flat, which also created a sense of the book dragging。 The feel of this one is a little similar to Heartless, in that it’s darker than the Lunar Chronicles, and seems written for an audience that is older than the intended audience of the Lunar Chronicles。 Readers should also go into the book knowing that it is not a standalone, so there will not be complete resolution at the end。In terms of the audiobook quality, I think Rebecca Soler was a great choice as narrator, since she has narrated other Marissa Meyer books in the past。 She does a fabulous job of using different intonations for each character, making the book seem as if there is a multi-person cast。Thanks go to NetGalley and MacMillan Children’s and MacMillan Audio for the opportunity to read and listen to an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

In a world of princess retellings, a slightly darker tale like Rumpelstiltskin stands out。 Marissa Meyer’s new book, Gilded, is just that。 Incorporating Germany mythology, Gilded spins the story of Serilda, a young girl long cursed by the God of Stories and Lies。 Her outlandish tales have always gotten her in trouble, but when her latest lie catches the attention of the Erlking, Serilda finds herself in over her head。 With the help of a mysterious poltergeist, she must accomplish the impossible In a world of princess retellings, a slightly darker tale like Rumpelstiltskin stands out。 Marissa Meyer’s new book, Gilded, is just that。 Incorporating Germany mythology, Gilded spins the story of Serilda, a young girl long cursed by the God of Stories and Lies。 Her outlandish tales have always gotten her in trouble, but when her latest lie catches the attention of the Erlking, Serilda finds herself in over her head。 With the help of a mysterious poltergeist, she must accomplish the impossible or die。The summation of this book sold it for me and I was excited to be gifted an eArc by the publisher。 But for all its golden promises, this book was a let down。 To start, I was unaware that this would be a new series and Gilded was the first of it。 With Rumpelstiltskin being such a short tale, the addition of the mythology could have stretched it into the perfect standalone novel。 Instead, the reader is left with unnecessary scenes and plot points to drag out the story into more books。 The core plot to this book is the romance between Gild and Serilda。 But the romance is unrealistic and weird at best。 Two touch starved teens, one a cursed poltergeist, fall in love after one night together? I expect that in most books like this, but I truly hoped for more。 The was no spark between them。 There were so many other plot points that get should be more important that truly get lost behind the love story。 Overall, I was disappointed in this one and probably won’t come back for the sequel。 。。。more

I was really excited for a new fantasy book from Marissa Meyer since I'm a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles。 While that series has some dark moments for sure, Gilded really steps it up into a darker and slightly more adult fantasy。 I really did want to love this book, but ultimately it just wasn't for me。 I felt that it was probably a hour or two longer than it needed to be because some moments felt really repetitive。 There also seemed to be so many different stories happening at once, but with I was really excited for a new fantasy book from Marissa Meyer since I'm a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles。 While that series has some dark moments for sure, Gilded really steps it up into a darker and slightly more adult fantasy。 I really did want to love this book, but ultimately it just wasn't for me。 I felt that it was probably a hour or two longer than it needed to be because some moments felt really repetitive。 There also seemed to be so many different stories happening at once, but with long stretches of nothing really happening at times。 I just wish things were a bit more concise, especially since this is clearly leading into a series。 I feel like some things could have been cut or left for the next book in the series。I did enjoy the audiobook narrator and they created many unique voices so I could easily tell who was talking。 They kept me engaged even during some of the duller parts of the book。Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan audio for the advanced listener copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Serilda’s distinctive eyes give her away - they mark her as a liar and she is mistrusted and shunned。 This creative retelling of the Rumplestiltskin story has all the Meyer hallmarks; intriguing characters, an interesting setting, and best of all, excellent themes for readers to ponder。 What is storytelling but the art of lies? When can lies become the truth? Fans will love this, new readers will be added to the fandom, and everyone will be on tenterhooks until the sequel。

Marissa Meyer weaves together a variety of German fairytales into her retelling of Rumpelstiltskin。 Her setting is vividly detailed, which easily captures the attention of readers, adding intrigue to her tale。 However, one might wish that the characterization of Meyer’s protagonists, especially Serilda was as evenly stitched as the setting。 Serilda veers from cluelessness one moment to super sleuth the next。 Throughout the story, she is provided with the tools to help her decode the mystery pres Marissa Meyer weaves together a variety of German fairytales into her retelling of Rumpelstiltskin。 Her setting is vividly detailed, which easily captures the attention of readers, adding intrigue to her tale。 However, one might wish that the characterization of Meyer’s protagonists, especially Serilda was as evenly stitched as the setting。 Serilda veers from cluelessness one moment to super sleuth the next。 Throughout the story, she is provided with the tools to help her decode the mystery presented; but she tends to procrastinate rather than use these tools to her advantage。 When the revelations inevitably occur, Serilda is arguably derisive, making observations that poke fun at the failure of others to come to the same conclusions。 While some readers might be able to gloss over Serilda’s bombastic rhetoric, others might struggle with these carelessly facetious remarks。 While Meyer’s tale offers a conclusion, there are a few revelations that support the opportunity for a sequel。 Meyer’s work in weaving together various tales into her retelling is excellent。 If a sequel is in the works, one would hope that the revelations offered at the end of this installment would allow for opportunities that would promote character growth and maturity。 。。。more

Yes, I did like parts of it。 However, it felt flat for a Marissa Meyer book for me。 It did not have the same adventurous feels Meyer had done for her past books。 There were too many characters that did not add anything special to the story。 The whole point of the story just revolves around Serilda, the Erlking and (few parts) with Gild。I also find the romance problematic。 Serilda is already in love with Gild after 2 or 3 monthly encounters? I don’t want to judge but maybe it was possible to be madly deeply in love with the person who’s always saving your butt。 Lol。Overall, I’d still give this story 3-stars and will still wait for the sequel just to know if the Erlking will have redemption and be the good guy (but that was already done by SJM😂, mybad)。A copy of this book was provided to me by Tor-Macmillan through Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
