Hmmmm Felt a milder version of GoT-TV-like rushing at the end; I guess the author had spent much stipulated time in writing the first 600 or so pages。This change in pace of the novel has consumed all my earlier felt appreciation of the writing! The entire war that the book built upto was over within a 100 pages while the building up took more than 600 pages! 😂Perhaps GoT was such a let down that it has affected my opinion of this book as well。Hmmm am I reviewing GoT TV or Dune ? 🤔

Honestly, this book is just a badass space adventure。 very inspirational and my favorite Sci-Fi book。 However, I'd say the first 180 pages are so boring, which really brings the book down。 I have to go through such a boring part of the book it burns, but when it's over, its fantastic and a great book。 Honestly, this book is just a badass space adventure。 very inspirational and my favorite Sci-Fi book。 However, I'd say the first 180 pages are so boring, which really brings the book down。 I have to go through such a boring part of the book it burns, but when it's over, its fantastic and a great book。 。。。more

THIS WAS AN AMAZING BOOK but remember to look up the triggers。It’s elaborate and there’s a whole world。 It takes skill to add this many plans within plans within plans for each of the characters - it’s a perfect blend of easy to understand and complex。

Holds up really well。 I really enjoyed this book。 It's hard to sympathize/feel emotionally invested in a lot of the characters, but it was still very captivating。 My favourite part of the book was actually reading through the appendix at the end。 The ecology was especially fascinating and well thought out。 Holds up really well。 I really enjoyed this book。 It's hard to sympathize/feel emotionally invested in a lot of the characters, but it was still very captivating。 My favourite part of the book was actually reading through the appendix at the end。 The ecology was especially fascinating and well thought out。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Awesome sci-fi story! Even though it takes place thousands of years in the future, it's not all about robots and space ships。 I liked how much of an integral role Lady Jessica played。 Even though she got a lot of blame at times (and undeserved blame when it came to the death of Leto), she was still portrayed as a powerful woman。 My only complaint is the vocabulary - there were so many terms I didn't understand, so I wish I knew there was a glossary when I started reading the book :) Awesome sci-fi story! A must read for anybody who loves reading。 Some of the material in the last quarter of this book is so relevant I can’t believe it was written decades ago。 A scathing teardown of capital gains crushing a minority people imbued with their own strengths and how that is expressed within them。 The cultures, creeds, identities, and colors of this story are so broad and overwhelming that taking my time with this (on top of a new job that asks more time from me) felt right。 It’s a grind, but the payoff, reward, and setup for the future is nearly unmatched。 It isn’t a perfect book, I feel the conclusion is a bit rushed, and the story sometimes a bit too tangled in relation to the time between chapters, but it’s all blemished in an otherwise dazzling piece of work。 My favorite genre, and this is the granddaddy。 Bring on the movie。 。。。more

There is, undoubtedly, a grandeur present in the pages of Frank Herbert’s 56-year old sci-fi classic。 A classic that acts as the foundation for much of what followed within the genre, but few compare to its density, it’s attentiveness to wavering unfamiliarity。 To be within the confines of “Dune” is to be somewhere else, its alien in the truest sense of the word。 It doesn’t act as a mirror but rather an illusion that dispels lessons of religions interminglings in politics, the dangers of it, the There is, undoubtedly, a grandeur present in the pages of Frank Herbert’s 56-year old sci-fi classic。 A classic that acts as the foundation for much of what followed within the genre, but few compare to its density, it’s attentiveness to wavering unfamiliarity。 To be within the confines of “Dune” is to be somewhere else, its alien in the truest sense of the word。 It doesn’t act as a mirror but rather an illusion that dispels lessons of religions interminglings in politics, the dangers of it, the callousness required to seize power, and that destiny often requires bloodshed。 It’s depth can make a reader stumble, as it did me, but its reward is sacrosanct。 A potent, indelible landmark of highbrow sci-fi, well worthy of its undying legacy。 。。。more

I tried reading this and gave up around page 200 because I got bored。 THEN I got the audiobook through my library and that was much more enjoyable。 It got me to about page 600 and I read my physical copy to the end。 I think all the terms the author created for his book made it too difficult to get into, but at the same time the universe he created was certainly an interesting one。

My boys and I listened to this and by the end only one kid was still (barely) listening。 This book was long and confusing and I kind of lost the point but I held on until the end。 I get that it’s a very famous book but other than the parts where they rode the toothed worms it wasn’t all that interesting to me—just not my genre。

I'm very conflicted with this book because I really liked the premise of it, it's a very unique and different story and world and the characters are all very interesting and layered and human, but I feel like the story loses some steam about halfway through, at least for me。 I was less interested in the story, the character of Paul started to annoy me quite a bit, he was always contradicting himself, it seemed, and I also think that the Fremen were such an interesting, mysterious, badass concept I'm very conflicted with this book because I really liked the premise of it, it's a very unique and different story and world and the characters are all very interesting and layered and human, but I feel like the story loses some steam about halfway through, at least for me。 I was less interested in the story, the character of Paul started to annoy me quite a bit, he was always contradicting himself, it seemed, and I also think that the Fremen were such an interesting, mysterious, badass concept of a tribe and they they just felt a bit useless and we're only there to be used by Paul to achieve his purpose。Also, as a non English native speaker (and having read this book in English) this was a VERY difficult read。 It has very formal, old and scientific language that, combined with the fact that things (made up concepts) were not really well explained (or explained at all) often put me off reading, to be honest。I don't think I'll be reading any more books of this series but I am very curious about the movie coming out this year and how they're going to shape the story for the big screen, specially because the book is so heavy on inner dialogue/thoughts。 。。。more

This has been the most unique reading experience of my life, because perhaps for the first time ever, I've read an entire novel WITH someone。 And I don't just mean we started at the same time and discussed it。 We called each night for what's been five weeks now and read it aloud chapter by chapter, noting each other's reactions to every word, pausing and discussing for hours in between。 This excruciating slowness and extreme scrutiny will never not factor into how I feel about this book。 The poe This has been the most unique reading experience of my life, because perhaps for the first time ever, I've read an entire novel WITH someone。 And I don't just mean we started at the same time and discussed it。 We called each night for what's been five weeks now and read it aloud chapter by chapter, noting each other's reactions to every word, pausing and discussing for hours in between。 This excruciating slowness and extreme scrutiny will never not factor into how I feel about this book。 The poetry - for example。 Brian Herbert writes in his afterword of this book that entire passages in the final manuscript were written as poetry first, made into prose much later。 To read aloud is to spot the rhythms in sentences that I would otherwise have missed。 The lilt of words like "glowglobes"。 The sounds of Urdu and Hindi-sounding words that I comprehend outside of the Dune-verse。Some things I did not love about the book go thus: the constantly spelled out internal monologue, the unsubtle angst of the phrase 'terrible purpose' repeated over and over again, the disgusting descriptions of Baron Vladimir's weight and its associated grotesqueness, and the strange gender divisions in the Reverend Mother worldbuilding。 However, I can mostly make my way around these unsavoury bits without ruining the experience as a whole。 Which is amazing, to be sure。 I voiced several times to my reading partner that I felt akin to a puppet in strings, Frank Herbert guiding me invisibly。 This book is one to surrender to - it has readings within readings within readings。 I have owed this book so much of my taste without realising it, and it owes its own aesthetic to much that I already love as well。 It has the qualities of being familiar and revelatory all in the same moments, of being exasperating and breathtaking in sentences next to each other。 From the thematic explorations of religion and colonialism and capitalism to the mere descriptions of the planet's ecology and an almost mundane narration of action and consequence and action - this book presses down on all the keys。 It's a complex, dissatisfying world。 It feels like a vision of another, real life, rather than a work of someone's imagination。 It's so precise。 Overflowing with made-up details。 And yet dissatisfying。 Like life, it's full of little details that carry on having consequences forever。 There's never any gift-wrapped ending。I'm so looking forward to all the Dune adaptations - the 80's Lynch one, the 2000's TV series, the 2013 documentary on Jodorowsky's unfinished Dune project from the 70's, the tons of reduxes - Star Wars, Mad Max, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - and finally, the 2021 Villeneuve。 (For eventual reviews of all these, follow my letterboxd: https://letterboxd。com/Maits/ ) 。。。more
