Zumie,
I have not listened to the podcast at all, so I came at this blind。 I thought the premise sounded interesting, but unfortunately it carries little of the plot。I think the main problem the book had was maintaining a sense of suspense when the characters simply will not shut up or take anything seriously。 I'm sure that's coming from the podcast and normal conversational banter, but it makes it hard to care about what happens to any of them。 It seems to take the stance that modern society in genera I have not listened to the podcast at all, so I came at this blind。 I thought the premise sounded interesting, but unfortunately it carries little of the plot。I think the main problem the book had was maintaining a sense of suspense when the characters simply will not shut up or take anything seriously。 I'm sure that's coming from the podcast and normal conversational banter, but it makes it hard to care about what happens to any of them。 It seems to take the stance that modern society in general sucks and blah blah back to simple roots of survival and fighting and etc outside the bubble, which is stupid。 If it had stuck to condemnation of corporate-run capitalist society, sure - but that actually makes up SUCH a small part of the story it leans into some pretty bullshit sentiments about humanity in general。It felt like it was trying too hard with humor to be adult and edgy and hipstery。 Idk just not my vibe at all。Also making basically the whole main cast white is like。 pretty noticeable!I started to write up a summary of the plot but truth be told I forgot the main character's name already and then I realized I didn't care。 There's a summary up top。 Use that。 The sci-fi setting unfortunately is not heavily explored or used beyond a little monster design and some deus ex machina equipment。 。。。more

I bought this on a whim without even knowing it's based on a podcast, and it was a DELIGHT。 The story's light and very self-aware about the tropes it portrays (found family, father issues, the corruption of corporate power, among others), but it never gets trite in that self-awareness。 Plus the McElroys cameo as a mutant monster with terrible pop culture takes, which is excellent。I do hope there's a follow-up book if not a direct sequel, though again, I had no idea this was a podcast, so maybe i I bought this on a whim without even knowing it's based on a podcast, and it was a DELIGHT。 The story's light and very self-aware about the tropes it portrays (found family, father issues, the corruption of corporate power, among others), but it never gets trite in that self-awareness。 Plus the McElroys cameo as a mutant monster with terrible pop culture takes, which is excellent。I do hope there's a follow-up book if not a direct sequel, though again, I had no idea this was a podcast, so maybe it ended the way it did because the podcast ended the same way? (originally reviewed at thelibraryladies。com)Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this graphic novel! In terms of podcasts, while I’ve dabbled outside the non-fiction realm, I really haven’t listened to many fiction series。 I did “Welcome to Nightvale” for awhile, I listened to “The Black Tapes” (probably my favorite of the fiction ones I’ve listened to), and I tried out “Limetown”。 But overall, it’s gotta be true crime, movies, or books for the topics I wanna listen to。 So (originally reviewed at thelibraryladies。com)Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an eARC of this graphic novel! In terms of podcasts, while I’ve dabbled outside the non-fiction realm, I really haven’t listened to many fiction series。 I did “Welcome to Nightvale” for awhile, I listened to “The Black Tapes” (probably my favorite of the fiction ones I’ve listened to), and I tried out “Limetown”。 But overall, it’s gotta be true crime, movies, or books for the topics I wanna listen to。 So I had never heard of the podcast “Bubble” when I saw that it had been adapted into a graphic novel by Jordan Morris and Sarah Morgan, the creator and a writer for the show itself。 While I wasn’t certain about what to expect, the premise was promising and intriguing: a dystopian world, a stunted society that seems perfect, and a dangerous wilderness of creatures that could kill you? That all sounds great。 Throw in some humor and it sounds even better。 So I gave it a go, because I hoped it would stand on its own two feet, outside of a podcast shadow。 And I don’t think that it quite did。That isn’t to say that this is “Welcome to Nightvale” levels of inability to stand on its own。 Here is what I liked about “Bubble”: the premise really is a good one。 I liked the idea of Fairhaven, a typical city that runs on capitalism and the gig economy, and the people who live there and work within that economy。 Satire about the drawbacks and pitfalls of a late stage capitalist society is kind of ripe for the picking, but “Bubble” does it well。 Our main character, Morgan, is a woman living in Fairhaven now, but was raised in the surrounding wild area called The Brush, which is inhabited by creatures called Imps that are dangerous and prone to attack humans。 Morgan knows how to deal with them, and when an Imp gets into Fairhaven she will kill it and bring it to her roommate Annie who will make it into drugs。 Morgan’s company, however, starts up a social media gig app (think Task Rabbit) that will give people the ability to go kill Imps for profit。 Throw in a hapless Postmates delivery guy named Mitch who is attacked by an Imp and given powers, and you have some fun main characters who are just trying to get by in a gig economy whose stakes are pretty damn high。 I liked Morgan and Annie, and Mitch feels very Chris Pratt in “Parks and Rec”, so he’s pretty charming。 And really, the entire idea is fun, especially when they all have to go into the Brush on a mission, involving a mysterious stone and the Brush living father Morgan left behind。 SO much potential, right? The problem I had was that “Bubble” never quite explored the potential enough for me。 This is a story that really should have some pretty wide and complex world building to it, both inside Fairhaven and outside in The Brush。 And we see bits and pieces of both when our main characters are interacting within。 But we don’t really have the time to explore backgrounds, histories, or dynamics, as the plot is constantly moving forward。 It’s entertaining, it’s quite funny at times, and the characters have lots of fun things to say to each other。 But I never really felt like I got a true feel for the setting they are in。 And the only character that I feel really got a lot of depth was Morgan, while everyone else, outside of a few hints and tidbits here and there, really kept in static place as the tale went on。 There just wasn’t much room to breathe, and I don’t know if that is because that’s how the podcast goes, or if it’s more a limitation when translating the podcast story to a graphic novel。 I suppose that I could go listen to the podcast to find out, but the story we have at hand isn’t really compelling enough for me to go and do so。That said, I really liked the art! Tony Cliff has some vibrant color schemes that feel sleek and futuristic, and I enjoyed the character designs as well。 The Imps in particular are pretty cool。“Bubble” has its moments and some great ideas。 I just think that it could have gone further。 。。。more

Freewheeling messy art, w-a-a-ay silly, and (to me) a tad confusing at first, but not enough to make you have to re-read it or anything。 Lots of Pg-13 rated fun that’s also a pointed commentary on the stress experienced by gig economy workers。 Based on a podcast apparently, so I’ll have to check that out。

A really fun romp and a cool design to replicate the podcast。 I was a huge fan of Bubble as a podcast, and have always been bummed that it never had a second season。 It is exciting to see it morph into this new format。 The story is a great concept, a colony of humans living in an alien world with a protective bubble over their Uber-hipster city。 When Aline monsters sneak into the bubble there are gig-economy hunters (or “Huntrs”) that can be called through an app to take them out。 This idea was A really fun romp and a cool design to replicate the podcast。 I was a huge fan of Bubble as a podcast, and have always been bummed that it never had a second season。 It is exciting to see it morph into this new format。 The story is a great concept, a colony of humans living in an alien world with a protective bubble over their Uber-hipster city。 When Aline monsters sneak into the bubble there are gig-economy hunters (or “Huntrs”) that can be called through an app to take them out。 This idea was slightly before it’s time when it cane out several years ago, in that the gig-economy and toxic online pretentiousness have gone up, both in amount and intensity。 Gig jobs being the only thing available for young people has gone from a joke to a growing occupational problem, and although this is a tongue-in-cheek look at those issues, I think it does draw some good attention to that。 The art is quite good。 I’m not a big animae person but this does seem to be done with a cool amount of manga-influenced look。 The design of panels with monsters or mutation are particularly excellent, and the more day-to-day images of the city do a great job creating a shorthand for the culture。 The writing captures the essence of the underlying bit, the pretentiousness, cynicism, and world-weariness that unfortunately has become an adaptive life skill for so many young adults。 At the same time the characters don’t take themselves too seriously。 I was glad to see the inclusion of gags like the hunters having to worry about pleasing customers for 5-star reviews, or hiding from a monster because a nearby party-air-horn was just too fun to resist pushing。 There are also several little Easter eggs for fans of Maximum Fun podcasts。 Some of the voice talents, like the McElroy Brothers, were well represented by the art in a way that will make you chuckle if you’re a fan。 The other humor is strong, but the one weakness of the book is that I’m not sure how funny you’ll find it if you haven’t listened to the podcast。 And if you have listened to the podcast then there isn’t really anything new in the story here。 They do one visual gag that you wouldn’t be able to do in an audio format, and I would have liked to see more of that, or maybe a few things that only appear in the book and not the podcast。 So they may have given themselves a little disadvantage with both audiences (those who are already fans of the podcast and those who haven’t heard it)。 The main reason to get this (to me) is if you’ve enjoyed the podcast and want to see it in animated detail, which is more than enough reason for me to get it and recommend it。 Whether I’d buy a physical copy (I reviewed it digitally) for my comics & graphic novel collection, I’m not sure。 I may, but there’s be other books I’d want to get ahold of first。 But I definitely recommend getting at least a digital copy if you liked the show, if you think the premise sounds fun, or even if you are a Max Fun fan or patron。4 solid stars。 Funny, awesome art, and good writing。 And it’s as fun as a comedy-adventure with this premise promises to be, which is what I loved about the podcast。 Overall I’d say Bubble was a perfect podcast and a good graphic novel。 I hope this takes off and there is a sequel, in either format。 I’ll read the next one if there is one。 Big thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for allowing me to review an advanced copy。 。。。more

Geoff,
I loved everything about this graphic novel (adapted from a humor podcast)。 The art is bright and dynamic, the humor is silly and cynical and satirical, the writing is Buffy meets Sorkin meets Portlandia, the gig economy is soul sucking, the characters are more than just their archetypes, and the big corporate commodifying overlords are real。 A great scifi satire that pushes all he right buttons for me。 **Thanks to the creators, publisher, and Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest I loved everything about this graphic novel (adapted from a humor podcast)。 The art is bright and dynamic, the humor is silly and cynical and satirical, the writing is Buffy meets Sorkin meets Portlandia, the gig economy is soul sucking, the characters are more than just their archetypes, and the big corporate commodifying overlords are real。 A great scifi satire that pushes all he right buttons for me。 **Thanks to the creators, publisher, and Netgalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
