Well this book I unabashedly loved。 It started out right where the first one left off and we were taken on a whirlwind adventure with the same characters I grew to love in Gilded and finally got a sort of closure。 I don't want to spoil the ending, so that's all I'll say, except that it does fit my personal book requirements in that way。 I love the characters, there was absolutely character and plot development up the wazoo, as expected from Marissa Meyer。 I was blown away by unexpected plot twis Well this book I unabashedly loved。 It started out right where the first one left off and we were taken on a whirlwind adventure with the same characters I grew to love in Gilded and finally got a sort of closure。 I don't want to spoil the ending, so that's all I'll say, except that it does fit my personal book requirements in that way。 I love the characters, there was absolutely character and plot development up the wazoo, as expected from Marissa Meyer。 I was blown away by unexpected plot twists and also gratified when some of my own predictions came true。 All around this book did not disappoint。 Also, I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator (again) was wonderful, she perfectly fit the tone and did the voices wonderfully, I felt fully immersed for the whole story。 All around this book was wonderfully done and I feel safe trusting my storytelling to these lovely ladies。 Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me with an advance review copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I received this as an ARC from Netgalley。com。I have loved most of what Marissa Meyer has written。 The Cinder series was one of my favorites。 I even have a signed copy of Cress。 But this duology was not my favorite。 I was happy that she returned to telling fairy tale retellings but this story seemed a little drawn out。 I loved the narrator。 The plot seems perfect but it was just a little too long。 I would still recommend it for someone who wants a fun fairy tale story。

I feel like this was even better than the first one in the series, without leaning too much on what happened before。 Oh, it definitely covered the stuff that was in the previous book, but there was so much more plot to be told that it was very almost completely self contained。 We begin this novel with Serilda now as tethered to the castle as Gild was in the previous book。 Neither of them have access to their bodies, which would break the curses on them。 So that's one part of the plot。 At the sam I feel like this was even better than the first one in the series, without leaning too much on what happened before。 Oh, it definitely covered the stuff that was in the previous book, but there was so much more plot to be told that it was very almost completely self contained。 We begin this novel with Serilda now as tethered to the castle as Gild was in the previous book。 Neither of them have access to their bodies, which would break the curses on them。 So that's one part of the plot。 At the same time, everyone believes Serilda is married to the damn bad guy, a plot that the Erlking himself put in place。 Sometimes he's even nice to her, and that's even more confusing, cause we're pretty sure he doesn't mean it。 We got to around the one third mark when Gild and Serilda figured out how to break their curses, and I'm sitting there staring at the pages going, 'How on earth are we going to fill the remaining book in an interesting way?'Well, I am here to tell you, I was not disappointed。 That figuring out of the curses was the last straight forward thing that happened。 There were some points where the twists and turns of the narrative stacked the deck so far against Serilda and Gild that I had to put the book down in despair, but I just had to know what happened。 The resulting conclusion of this duology was every bit as satisfying as a reader could hope。 I did wish that we got maybe another chapter to see our main characters actually have some happiness, but I didn't miss that so much to pull down a star from the rating。 。。。more

And if you haven’t already, I highly recommend checking out the first book in the series, Gilded。 I also wanted to say a massive thank you to Divya for the giveaway which allowed me to read one of my most anticipated reads of the year。 。。。more

Cursed is the follow up to Gilded which published almost exactly a year ago。 At the time, I noted that I felt this was a very long retelling of Rumplestiltskin。 For the first half of this book, I thought the same thing; there's a lot of extra stuff being put in here, stuff that sometimes feels like padding。 Once you hit the last third, things start to really take off, but I did think it took a while getting there。However, if you're going to be reading a slower book, this is the one to read。 Mari Cursed is the follow up to Gilded which published almost exactly a year ago。 At the time, I noted that I felt this was a very long retelling of Rumplestiltskin。 For the first half of this book, I thought the same thing; there's a lot of extra stuff being put in here, stuff that sometimes feels like padding。 Once you hit the last third, things start to really take off, but I did think it took a while getting there。However, if you're going to be reading a slower book, this is the one to read。 Marissa's descriptions are lush and amazing, I could picture everything that was happening, and her characters are intriguing。 For a while there I wondered if she was going to redeem the Erlking! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Meyer's 'Cursed' had a strong start; I really enjoyed the first story about returning to life once a year to see loved ones, and reminded me of the Disney film, Coco! It flowed from the events of the first book, and put me right back in the story - the relationship between Gild and Serilda also retained the essence that initially drew me in。 As a whole, I did enjoy the book, but there were a few aspects that I would have lied to see delved into more - which I will explore subsequently。 My favour Meyer's 'Cursed' had a strong start; I really enjoyed the first story about returning to life once a year to see loved ones, and reminded me of the Disney film, Coco! It flowed from the events of the first book, and put me right back in the story - the relationship between Gild and Serilda also retained the essence that initially drew me in。 As a whole, I did enjoy the book, but there were a few aspects that I would have lied to see delved into more - which I will explore subsequently。 My favourite aspect, which was carried over from the first book, was the mystery surrounding Gild's family。 I felt that the intrigue was handled well by Meyer, but would have liked to see more of it - for example, seeing more of Gild's sister and her experience of the past 300 years。 While the way in which she was introduced was excellent, and the sense in which they were unknown to one another felt very real, seeing more of her after this point would have been even better。 It might be really interesting to have a novella of her experiences during the curse, or of the family before the curse and the events leading up to it。 Essentially, I enjoyed how Meyer handled the history, but would love to have seen more of it - hence one of my favourite parts was the reveal of Gild's true name towards the end。 I also really enjoyed Serilda's relationship with the children; it was a unique idea and an excellent method of showing more of her character - her maturity and growth in thie book compared to the last one was palpable。 Her difficulties surrounding the loss of her parents also aided in this, with her emotions towards each very believeable and authentic。 The revelation of Serilda's mother's identity was also unexpected, to say the least, and a really fascinating twist! Everything came together nicely regarding why Serilda was 'cursed', rather than just born healthy, according to her father's wish。 I would, however, have liked more details on her mother - perhaps through a story? Even without delving into the past, I would have enjoyed seeing more of their conversations after the reunion。 I was somewhat underwhelmed, however, by the claim Gild made on his child。 I had the bargain in the back of my mind from the first book, and was expecting a big and emotional claim when it eventually came。 I really enjoyed the tension Meyer created through this thread, but it was that that left me somewhat underwhelmed。 This was a tone that I left the book with in many respects - while i enjoyed it, I wasn't overawed。 There were several things that I would have liked to see more of and others that I might have taken away - but as a whole, I look forward to reading Meyer's next piece of work! 。。。more
