The synopsis provided is good enough that I don't feel the need to repeat it here。 More mystery than SciFi, so set your expectations accordingly。 Really enjoyed it and hope we don't have to wait too long for the implied Constance #2。 The synopsis provided is good enough that I don't feel the need to repeat it here。 More mystery than SciFi, so set your expectations accordingly。 Really enjoyed it and hope we don't have to wait too long for the implied Constance #2。 。。。more
Kathleen Cook,
I was fascinated by this story。 A futuristic book not really very far into the future makes it more realistic。 Details about climate change, self-driving cars, etc。, are dropped in to make the reader ponder how our lives are racing toward a predictable future。 All that while telling a tale of cloning and all it could mean for humans。 People's feelings about clones as not really human parallels feelings some people have for people of different races and cultures。 I loved this story。 Will there be I was fascinated by this story。 A futuristic book not really very far into the future makes it more realistic。 Details about climate change, self-driving cars, etc。, are dropped in to make the reader ponder how our lives are racing toward a predictable future。 All that while telling a tale of cloning and all it could mean for humans。 People's feelings about clones as not really human parallels feelings some people have for people of different races and cultures。 I loved this story。 Will there be a second book in this series? 。。。more

Con (Constance, but she hates that) is a traumatised, unhappy and confused young woman in DC 20 minutes into the future (ok, around 2038)。 Given a clone as an insurance policy by a bitter aunt, she awakens from a 'refresh' (uploading her consciousness into a mainframe in case the clone is ever needed) to discover she is, in fact, her clone。 She doesn't know how she died or even what's happened in the last 18 months。 And so the story begins。Constance is a good book。 The setting is well realised a Con (Constance, but she hates that) is a traumatised, unhappy and confused young woman in DC 20 minutes into the future (ok, around 2038)。 Given a clone as an insurance policy by a bitter aunt, she awakens from a 'refresh' (uploading her consciousness into a mainframe in case the clone is ever needed) to discover she is, in fact, her clone。 She doesn't know how she died or even what's happened in the last 18 months。 And so the story begins。Constance is a good book。 The setting is well realised and described and Con feels to me like a real person。 It is also refreshing that she isn't a blonde, standard white girl and while the story isn't told in the first person, it is entirely from her perspective。 I'd noticed reviews remarking that characters ethnicity is described - this, to me, makes sense since, as a mixed-race POC, Con can't help but notice as she's aware that how people react to her will be dependent and affected by their own race。But that's an aside。 The book is good。 It's very good。 There are a couple of niggles (of course - there almost always are) - a good deal of the plot relies on Batman gambits and coincidence (though there is one that is actually perfect and intentional) and the technicalities and limitations of the cloning sometimes seem arbitrary and there simply for story purposes。 Even so, the story is engagingly written - I read it in a day as I really did become engaged。 I like Con。 She isn't perfect - she's not super smart, or super fit, or super beautiful。 But she is in a super strange situation and her life experiences help (and sometimes hinder) her navigation of them。 I found the ending bittersweet - though, of course, your mileage may vary。I'm a sci-fi fan so, in truth, I'm much less likely to read FitzSimmons' other published books but, assuming there's a sequel to Constance, I shall be looking out for it。 。。。more

Amazon First Reads book to be released Sept。 2021。 Enjoyable near future thriller involving cloning, rock music, and conspiracy。 It kept my attention and I hate that I need to wait a year for the sequel!

What would happen if we were able to clone ourselves? Can anything that humans create be considered natural? While that seemed to be the main theme of this book, it was still a mystery wrapped in sci-fi and I loved it。 I never enjoy books that are easy to guess, and this book kept me guessing from the beginning。 Right when I thought I knew what was going on, FitzSimmons would rip the rug from underneath me。 I also appreciate how the future of the world looked in this book。 It wasn't so far fetche What would happen if we were able to clone ourselves? Not a bad read for anyone who likes books set in the future, stories about clones, or stories with a lot of twists and turns。 This book is set in the late 2030’s in a time where human cloning is a reality, but not everyone agrees with it。 The main character, Con, was gifted a clone of herself by her aunt, the discoverer of the cloning technology。 Con is shocked and horrified one day when her consciousness wakes up 18 months in the future as her clone, which can only mean that her original self h Not a bad read for anyone who likes books set in the future, stories about clones, or stories with a lot of twists and turns。 This book is set in the late 2030’s in a time where human cloning is a reality, but not everyone agrees with it。 The main character, Con, was gifted a clone of herself by her aunt, the discoverer of the cloning technology。 Con is shocked and horrified one day when her consciousness wakes up 18 months in the future as her clone, which can only mean that her original self has died。 But how did she die, and why are people suddenly chasing her, trying to kill her? I liked the realistic issues the author brought up about the societal impact cloning would have and the different situations that could arrive were the technology ever really invented。 I could definitely see this book being made into a movie as well。 Overall, an interesting read! 。。。more

Best read in a very long timeI really don't write book reviews, because most I've read weren't worth my time。 That said, this one drew me in and kept me interested to the end。 Science fiction at it's best forges ahead into topics of wonder and ethics。 It is able to make you think and consider: Can this be far off? Nick Adamson,
An interesting concept。 This is a clever idea well written。I'd not call it a real page turner, in places it felt a bit contrived。 But I did enjoy it and will probably give the sequel a try at some point。 An interesting concept。 This is a clever idea well written。I'd not call it a real page turner, in places it felt a bit contrived。 But I did enjoy it and will probably give the sequel a try at some point。 。。。more
Erich Becker,
Very engaging book and tries hard to be unique in a world were works like Altered Carbon and Recoil exist。 What can you do uniquely with a book about clones and switching bodies these days? The added political intrigue is good, although the parallels to present day are a bit on the nose in a few places, and the book in the early 30-numbered chapters really starts to drag the reader along a bit where you just want to know what is happening, and when a twist comes, its not hard to see it coming, b Very engaging book and tries hard to be unique in a world were works like Altered Carbon and Recoil exist。 What can you do uniquely with a book about clones and switching bodies these days? 4。5 stars!Another successful story by FitzSimmons, this tale is very thought provoking and illustrates how greed often overrides introspective analysis of the impact of scientific discoveries on human-kind。 Instead, with unlimited profits to be made, the bio-technology is unleashed and becomes yet another societal class bomb-with the privilege of the uber rich pitted against the norm, not to mention the whole weird morality factor。 The protagonist, Con, struggling young musician, has been "given 4。5 stars!Another successful story by FitzSimmons, this tale is very thought provoking and illustrates how greed often overrides introspective analysis of the impact of scientific discoveries on human-kind。 Instead, with unlimited profits to be made, the bio-technology is unleashed and becomes yet another societal class bomb-with the privilege of the uber rich pitted against the norm, not to mention the whole weird morality factor。 The protagonist, Con, struggling young musician, has been "given" a clone by her Aunt, who created the science and biology for uploading memories and consciousness into a computer。 The "consciousness" is stored for download to their clone in the event of the original person's death。 Con must visit the facility once per month for a upload refresh to keep her memories recent, and if she misses more than 90 days, her clone and account is suspended, as there are numerous problems with a memory lag of more than 30 days。 But instead of waking up after her 6 hour upload, she wakes up and finds she is a clone with a memory lag of 18 months。 She is confused, but understands her life is in danger and manages to survive, with some help from dubious other characters。 She must find out what happened during her missing 18 months and it leads her to unexpected places and circumstances。I love that she is small but mighty。 She is street smart and doesn't trust。 As the story moves along, I just liked her more and more。 The story is told from her point of view, and Fitzsimmons is able to capture her confusion and emotion allowing the reader to be fully along for the ride。FitzSimmons covers many aspects of modern society, from the anti-clone hate groups with leaders riding the "cause" to their advantage, to greedy corporate leaders, and finally, to a brilliant but arrogant and self-centered scientist, who trashes morality for the possibilities of immortality。 It was complex but relatable and for sci-fi nerds like me, mostly believable。 I loved the action, the intrigue, the suspense, and the twists and turns that were never boring。 The end was satisfying with a door open to another book in the series。 In the end, I loved Con's decisions and her ability to value quality over quantity in life。 I am looking forward to the next installment。 。。。more
