Summary

Soon to be a motion picture starring Harry Styles and Emma Corrin, an exquisitely told, tragic tale of thwarted love。

It is in 1950's Brighton that Marion first catches sight of Tom。 He teaches her to swim, gently guiding her through the water in the shadow of the city's famous pier and Marion is smitten--determined her love alone will be enough for them both。 A few years later near the Brighton Museum, Patrick meets Tom。 Patrick is besotted, and opens Tom's eyes to a glamorous, sophisticated new world of art, travel, and beauty。 Tom is their policeman, and in this age it is safer for him to marry Marion and meet Patrick in secret。 The two lovers must share him, until one of them breaks and three lives are destroyed。

In this evocative portrait of midcentury England, Bethan Roberts reimagines the real life relationship the novelist E。 M。 Forster had with a policeman, Bob Buckingham, and his wife。 My Policeman is a deeply heartfelt story of love's passionate endurance, and the devastation wrought by a repressive society。

3。5-4 ⭐️ The book is beautifully touching and deeply moving。 This book has extreme power packed behind its punch that evokes deep emotions from the reader。 This book is incredibly frustrating, but I think that was the authors intention so, job well done。 I wasn’t the biggest fan of the writing style but I’m just personally particular on how I like books to be written。 Overall good book, would recommend。

This was a difficult book to rate。 Roberts writes with such vividness and clarity and this helps create a world that feels entirely real。 Yet, at times the writing feels bogged down in detail and unnecessarily cumbersome。 Nevertheless, I think she presents a convincing and interesting cast of characters with a tragic storyline。 I am excited to see how the movie version will stand up to the book (I think it could be improved by the pacing of a film)。

The Guardian described My Policeman as “a humane and evocative portrait of a time when lives were destroyed by intolerance” and I can’t think of a better summary。 My Policeman follows the lives of Marion and Patrick who both find themselves in love with our policeman, Tom。 Set in 1950’s Brighton when homosexuality was still illegal, this book is a beautifully written tragedy with gripping and complex characters。 It’s a compelling and vivid read, and I can’t wait to see how it’s transformed to sc The Guardian described My Policeman as “a humane and evocative portrait of a time when lives were destroyed by intolerance” and I can’t think of a better summary。 My Policeman follows the lives of Marion and Patrick who both find themselves in love with our policeman, Tom。 Set in 1950’s Brighton when homosexuality was still illegal, this book is a beautifully written tragedy with gripping and complex characters。 It’s a compelling and vivid read, and I can’t wait to see how it’s transformed to screen in its upcoming adaptation。 。。。more

Have rounded up。 Was really keen to read this before film adaptation。 So excited for a tragic gay love story that wasn’t centred round the AIDS epidemic。 I loved the idea of there being a wife in the triangle only problem she was horrible。 I’m not sure if we were suppose to sympathise with her but even in the modern sections when she’s older she was so ignorant and selfish。 Loved it for Tom and Patrick!

I DON’T KNOW!! Love a moody British period drama, and the setting and politics of the time were beautifully rendered。 Every single character except for Julia was infuriating, and the characterization of Patrick felt inauthentic and frankly icky。 Tom, the “policeman” who both narrators lusted after literally the entire time, had the personality of dry toast, but I am excited to see Harry Styles play him in the movie。

Millie Egan

Read it because of ✨Harry styles✨ but apart from that it was such a good book

I was engrossed by this。 I read it in three sittings。 What a car crash。 Very sad story of lives being destroyed。

heartbreaking but beautifully written book。 seeing the parallels between Marion and Patrick’s affections towards Tom was so absorbing!! I couldn’t put the book down。 I only wish I could have read Tom’s perspective。。

this took a while for me to get into - I didn’t enjoy reading from Marion’s narration at the start and couldn’t get into it。 But then began I enjoying it more with the switch to Patrick and even when it switches back to Marion and her growth as a character。 It became so gut wrenching towards the end :((I want the most beautiful Venice scenes in the film ngl)

I laughed。 ‘For a policeman, you’re very romantic。’‘For an artist, you’re very afraid,’ he said。My answer to that was to kiss him hard on the mouth。There isn't anything specific that comes to my mind when I write the review of the book。 The book took me by hand and made me sit on fire and now I have blisters all over my body。 The novel is all about the atrocities faced by queers in the 50s and 60s。 It gets overwhelming reading the book。 It tells the story of three people and how they are stuck u I laughed。 ‘For a policeman, you’re very romantic。’‘For an artist, you’re very afraid,’ he said。My answer to that was to kiss him hard on the mouth。There isn't anything specific that comes to my mind when I write the review of the book。 The book took me by hand and made me sit on fire and now I have blisters all over my body。 The novel is all about the atrocities faced by queers in the 50s and 60s。 It gets overwhelming reading the book。 It tells the story of three people and how they are stuck up in this turmoil because of their identity and sexuality。 。。。more

Rounded up from 2。5 stars (side note — when will Goodreads allow for half stars?!) I read this book because Harry Styles is going to be in the movie, obviously。 However…now I am very nervous about whether I will like the movie and especially Harry’s part。 Tom is so unlikeable; the way he takes advantage of both Marion and Patrick is appalling, and we never get his point of view to know his thought processes。 Because the POV jumped around in time and between Marion/Patrick, it leads to a lot of c Rounded up from 2。5 stars (side note — when will Goodreads allow for half stars?!)
