Summary

Discover where Celaena Sardothien's thrilling saga began。

Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom's most feared assassin。 Though she works for the powerful and ruthless Assassin's Guild, Celaena yields to no-one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam。

When Celaena's scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, she finds herself acting independently of his wishes—and questioning her own allegiance。 Along the way, she makes friends and enemies alike, and discovers that she feels far more for Sam than just friendship。 But by defying Arobynn's orders, Celaena risks unimaginable punishment, and with Sam by her side, he is in danger, too。 They will have to risk it all if they hope to escape Arobynn's clutches—and if they fail, they'll lose not just a chance at freedom, but their lives。。。

A prequel to Throne of Glass, this collection of five novellas offers listeners a deeper look into the history of this cunning assassin and her enthralling—and deadly—world。

I haven't read an actual book in a long time。 After spending a few months organizing my tbr, I was interested in reading a fantasy series with a strong female character。 And Caleana Sardothein did not disappoint。 A female who is gifted with raw talent, written so beautifully。 She also does not go with the annoying slogan of, 'I'm not like other girls。。。' but rather embraces the concept of femininity and showcases it as strength rather than infirmity, as it is often portrayed widely across the gl I haven't read an actual book in a long time。 After spending a few months organizing my tbr, I was interested in reading a fantasy series with a strong female character。 And Caleana Sardothein did not disappoint。 A female who is gifted with raw talent, written so beautifully。 She also does not go with the annoying slogan of, 'I'm not like other girls。。。' but rather embraces the concept of femininity and showcases it as strength rather than infirmity, as it is often portrayed widely across the globe。 I immensely enjoyed this read, and I will continue on with the rest of the series to see what journey awaits Calaena。 。。。more

I can not even describe the mental anguish this brought upon me。 I haven’t cried in 9 months and this book really fixes that for me。 I had to silently sob on an airplane foe 30 minutes。 Regardless I loved al the back stories and learning all the things that happened before Endovier。 Sams story is so heartbreaking and he very quickly became a favorite character even though I knew what would happen to him。 That was not easy to read but very necessary to the series。 I decided to read it last after I can not even describe the mental anguish this brought upon me。 I haven’t cried in 9 months and this book really fixes that for me。 I had to silently sob on an airplane foe 30 minutes。 Regardless I loved al the back stories and learning all the things that happened before Endovier。 Sams story is so heartbreaking and he very quickly became a favorite character even though I knew what would happen to him。 That was not easy to read but very necessary to the series。 I decided to read it last after kingdom of ash although that is not the correct order but it felt like a fitting end to probably the best series I have ever read。 。。。more

GOSH DARN IT。 Why。 Like why。 I KNEW what was going to happen and I still bawled like a baby。 This book was so good。 The mini stories all blending together was perfection。 And Celaena is the perfect MC。 Love love love this book, can’t wait to read ToG。

I’m not usually a fan of the way this book is written in sections as if they are a collection of stories, but it really showed the characters in a different light。 I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading about The Assassins Guild, and the twist at the end, I almost didn’t read this book at all and was going to continue to Queen of Shadows but I do think this has added so much more context。 Much better than Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight!

9/10: Loved it! Wonderful! Amazing! I do not usually enjoy prequels so I decided to read this before Throne of Glass! So glad I did!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This sucked。 Celaena was so annoying throughout all of this, and everybody keeps over hyping Her and sams relationship。 They only spent a month being together, and Sarah J Mass didn’t even go in detail with the time they spent together, she just fast forwarded to when everything went south。 If word count was an issue, SJM could have easily taken out the healers or a lot of the desert scenes, if they don’t play a part later in the story, and put cute moments between them。 AND THIS WAS THEIR RELAT This sucked。 Celaena was so annoying throughout all of this, and everybody keeps over hyping Her and sams relationship。 They only spent a month being together, and Sarah J Mass didn’t even go in detail with the time they spent together, she just fast forwarded to when everything went south。 If word count was an issue, SJM could have easily taken out the healers or a lot of the desert scenes, if they don’t play a part later in the story, and put cute moments between them。 AND THIS WAS THEIR RELATIONSHIP LOL:Sam: I’ve loved you since we were kidsCelaena: omg I’ve loved you for 3 months, I think we’re soulmates!Sam: Fr Fr let’s run away and start a new life 💫 PLUSSSSS it was so annoying at the end because there was so many ways to prevent Sams death。 Like Sam could have let her go with him, they could have just ran when they were free, or they could have fucking just ran when they were at the pirate lords place! Smh。 Even saying all of that, I still sobbed like a baby。 Not because I was sad about Sam dying, but because of how much it broke Celaena。 The thing that broke me the most was knowing that the “I am Sam Cortland and I will not be afraid” WAS FROM SAM! I FUCKING CRIED MY EYES OUT KNOWING THAT。 I THIUGHT IT WAS CELAENAS THING CAUSE I READ TOG FIRST。 。。。more

It was really nice hearing more about Celaena’s life before the events of the main series。 I really appreciated this extra insight into who she really is and how she ended up where she was at the beginning of Throne of Glass。

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: ★★★★☆So this is the legendary Sam Cortland。 After less than 80 pages, I’ve already fallen in love with him, and I’m not ready for the tragic ending I know is coming。 Aside from Sam, (although he was most definitely my favorite part) I loved the insight we got into Celaena’s character, and I was hooked for the entire story。 At the ending of the story, when Celaena thought Sam had died in the tower collapse, my heart almost stopped。 In the span of 75 pages I had f The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: ★★★★☆So this is the legendary Sam Cortland。 After less than 80 pages, I’ve already fallen in love with him, and I’m not ready for the tragic ending I know is coming。 Aside from Sam, (although he was most definitely my favorite part) I loved the insight we got into Celaena’s character, and I was hooked for the entire story。 At the ending of the story, when Celaena thought Sam had died in the tower collapse, my heart almost stopped。 In the span of 75 pages I had fallen in love with Sam and I was not ready for him to die。 Here’s to the heartbreak to come…“‘Come on, Sardothien,’ he said, slinging an arm around her shoulders。 ‘If you’re done liberating slaves and destroying pirate cities, then let’s go home。’”The Assassin and the Healer: ★★★☆☆ (3。5)Probably my least favorite so far。 I’m not going to lie, I was a bit bored throughout this。 I really enjoyed Yrene’s character and I’ve heard that she reappears later in the series so I’m excited to see her character developed even more。 Although they had very little time together, I think that Celaena and Yrene have the potential to become better friends, and I’m really looking forward to that。 Overall, not the strongest of the stories, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, especially the ending。“The world needs more healers。”The Assassin and the Desert: ★★★★☆ (4。5)This story definitely has to be my favorite so far! Not only was it the most entertaining, but it seemed that Celaena had the most character development in this one。 And she also finally admits that maybe, just maybe, she might have feelings for Sam?? I might be a bit biased but any mention of this boy immediately captures my attention。 Another one of my favorite parts had to be Celaena’s friendship with Amstel。 Even with how this story ended, I still adore Andes。 I think she and her motivations are fascinating, and I’m really hoping she comes back later in the series。“For the first time in a long while, she heard the song of the northern wind, calling her home。 And she was not afraid。”The Assassin and the Underworld: ★★★★★Wow oh wow oh wow I enjoyed this so much! And not just because of that love confession。 (Although that might have been a big part of it…) But regardless, this story also felt the most exciting。 There was so much going on, from Sam and Celaena confessing their feelings for each other, to her mission gone wrong。 I just am starting to feel so much for these characters and I’m not ready to say goodbye to Sam。 I loved the ending on this story, both because I thought it was a genius plot twist, and because it was very satisfying as well。 Also, I finally understand why everyone thinks Arobynn is so horrible。 This one really made me despise him。 “‘I have no name,’ she purred。 ‘I'm whoever the keepers of my fate tell me to be。’”The Assassin and the Empire: ★★★☆☆ (3。5)This last story felt like a step down from the other ones, and the ending felt a bit unsatisfying。 It wasn’t because I hated what happened to Sam and Celaena (although I really did) but it didn’t feel like there was that much action until the very end, and even then it felt rushed。 But there was very little that I didn’t enjoy, and I think the good did eventually outweigh the bad。 I loved the plot twists and Arobynn’s role in this story, even if I despise his character。 I loved the bittersweet moments between Sam and Celaena, even though they weren’t meant to last。 And I loved how Celaena’s character grew。 She was a very different person in this story than she started off as in the first one。 “‘My name is Celaena Sardothien,’ she whispered, ‘and I will not be afraid。’”Final Thoughts:Overall Rating: 4。1 starsI was honestly very surprised by how much I enjoyed this book。 It gave such a great insight into Celaena’s character as well as her past with Sam, and although it was heartbreaking to read I think it also gave me a greater appreciation for her。 When I first read Throne of Glass I felt very indifferent towards her, but I feel like I’m starting to lean towards the side of people that adores her。While I did enjoy each individual novella to some extent, there were definitely some that were better than others, both writing and plot wise。 What I did really love about each one were the endings though。 Each seemed to leave off with Celaena heading off on her next adventure, even the very last one。Another part that I really loved about this bind-up was the writing。 I felt like Mass’ writing was some of the best in this book, because it drew me into the story and kept me captivated once I was there。 Her writing has a very whimsical feel to it, but it brings you down back down to earth with its heartbreaking lines at the same time。 I really love her writing style, at least I did in this book, and it makes me very excited to continue on with the rest of the series! My reviews for the rest of the series!Throne of Glass: ★★★☆☆ (3。5) 。。。more
