Summary

New York Times bestseller Lisa Kleypas returns with an enthralling and steaming romance between a widowed lady and a Scot on the run—who may have connections to one of London's most noble families。

“The devil never tries to make people do the wrong thing by scaring them。 He does it by tempting them。”

Lady Merritt Sterling, a strong-willed young widow who’s running her late husband’s shipping company, knows London society is dying to catch her in a scandal。 So far, she’s been too smart to provide them with one。 But then she meets Keir MacRae, a rough-and-rugged Scottish whisky distiller, and all her sensible plans vanish like smoke。 They couldn’t be more different, but their attraction is powerful, raw and irresistible。

From the moment Keir MacRae arrives in London, he has two goals。 One: don’t fall in love with the dazzling Lady Merritt Sterling。 Two: avoid being killed。

So far, neither of those is going well。

Keir doesn’t know why someone wants him dead until fate reveals his secret connection to one of England’s most powerful families。 His world is thrown into upheaval, and the only one he trusts is Merritt。

Their passion blazes with an intensity Merritt has never known before, making her long for the one thing she can’t have from Keir MacRae: forever。 As danger draws closer, she’ll do whatever it takes to save the man she loves。。。 even knowing he might be the devil in disguise。

Another lovely historical romance from Lisa Kleypas。 I adore her books and suspect I may go on a rereading binge。。。 Series-wise this feels far more Wallflower the Next Generation than Ravenels, although we do get cameos from Garrett, Ethan and Phoebe。

And don’t even get me started on how Merritt isn’t actually actually infertile and just needed a virile male to get her successfully pregnant, despite the fact she blames herself for her first husband’s death after he found out they couldn’t have kids。 Seriously, I wish that trope would die in a grease fire。 Infertility is awful and it does a disservice to anyone dealing with it when authors are like “well, clearly the answer is a more manly man!” Ugh。 I think my fundamental issue is that this book follows the story of a character we have only met once (Merritt) and how she immediately falls in love with someone she meets for the first time because he is handsome。 There wasn’t much relationship development and growth, and we didn’t really get in insight into what makes them love each other。 I enjoyed both the Wallflower and Ravenals series because they built on the characters over time。 This felt very tossed together to leverage the nostalgia of the Wallflowers experience。 If it has been introduced as a new series or direction (ie Children of the Wallflowers), maybe I wouldn’t feel so disappointed。 I’m annoyed I bought this book and didn’t wait for the library copy。 I’ve never had such a negative reaction to a LK book before。 。。。more

The latest installment in the Ravenal Series, Devil in Disguise, gives us the story of Lady Merritt Sterling and Keir MacRae。 Lady Merritt is the daughter of Lillian and Marcus, recently widowed and running her late husband's shipping company。 Keir is a rugged Scottish whiskey distiller, who would like nothing more than to get his business in London done quickly and return home to remote Scotland。 When they meet, it's instant attraction。 While Merritt is intent on giving in to the attraction whi The latest installment in the Ravenal Series, Devil in Disguise, gives us the story of Lady Merritt Sterling and Keir MacRae。 Lady Merritt is the daughter of Lillian and Marcus, recently widowed and running her late husband's shipping company。 Keir is a rugged Scottish whiskey distiller, who would like nothing more than to get his business in London done quickly and return home to remote Scotland。 When they meet, it's instant attraction。 While Merritt is intent on giving in to the attraction while avoiding a scandal, Keir finds himself in more danger than falling for Merritt can bring when an assassin is after him。 The relationship between Merritt and Keir was lovely。 Merritt was fierce, brave, and went after exactly what she wanted。 Keir was funny and gruff, but so sweet。 Their banter was great and the chemistry was off the charts。 Despite being the latest installment in the Ravenels series, Devil in Disguise really qualifies more as a Wallflowers next generation book, since it was very light on Ravenels but heavy on old friends from the Wallflowers series, including fan-favorite Sebastian, Lord St Vincent (of course, now he's Duke of Kingston)。 Some of it felt like a little too much playing to the fans, but I can't lie, I did eat it up。 People may disagree, but I actually enjoyed the twist and do think it's consistent with Sebastian's character before Evie。 The ending did feel a little rushed, and the assassination storyline wrapped up with very little danger or anticipation。 While I typically like to see a glimpse of the couple in the future for the epilogue, this one is just a conversation between Sebastian and Marcus that was a little disappointing (the subject matter was a little bit of a pet peeve of mine too)。 I would've liked more Merritt and Keir! Bottom line: I'll take a new Kleypas any day, and this was no exception。 So good。 。。。more

WHY!?!! It's not their book!!! For that matter, why is this in the Ravenel series??? Also, it has the 'I'm barren, that’s ok we can adopt, surprise I am pregnant!' trope, which I highly dislike。 The longer I think about this book, the more I am dissatisfied。 。。。more

As a disclaimer, there were some incorrect names in the eARC: Sebastian tells Merritt that Keir's mother Cordelia was from the Pallister family, but then later Seraphina tells Keir that his mother's family are the Roystons and the Plaskitts。 And Cordelia's husband is called Lord Ormonde consistently until the last chapter, when Duffy reads a telegram that calls him "Osborne。" Hopefully those were fixed in the published novel!Like everyone else on the internet, I read the spoilers for Devil in Di As a disclaimer, there were some incorrect names in the eARC: Sebastian tells Merritt that Keir's mother Cordelia was from the Pallister family, but then later Seraphina tells Keir that his mother's family are the Roystons and the Plaskitts。 And Cordelia's husband is called Lord Ormonde consistently until the last chapter, when Duffy reads a telegram that calls him "Osborne。" Hopefully those were fixed in the published novel!Like everyone else on the internet, I read the spoilers for Devil in Disguise and was interested in seeing how Kleypas dealt with this development。 And I thought it was well-done, but it rather overshadowed everything else in the plot。 Merritt and Keir meet, there's mutual attraction there, but Merritt is the pursuer and the instigator of their relationship。 And they have enough issues to deal with--different backgrounds, unequal social classes, they each run a business that requires them to live in very different locales--without adding an attempted murder plot, amnesia, and family revelations into the mix。I wasn't crazy about the ending for two reasons: first, the hero suddenly gaining a title feels like an easy way to overcome their social differences, and I would rather have seen the concessions involved on both sides。 (I had this same problem with Loretta Chase's Dukes Prefer Blondes)。 Second, Merritt's barrenness (it seems like she has uterine fibroids) and Keir's absolute non-issue with it (he was adopted!!) is completely negated by the revelation in the epilogue that she's pregnant。 I didn't want that--I didn't need a miracle baby! I feel like it spoils the message that you can live a perfectly happy life without a child, whether you wanted one or not。In short: I liked Merritt and Keir, I just wish that the story had been more focused on them。 。。。more

A big thank you to netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 I fondly recall reading the original wallflowers series, and to this day it is one of the few series that’s earned a place, in full, on my crowded bookshelf。 Sebastian and Evie are one of my favorite historical romance couples ever。 To be completely honest my heart wasn’t broken by the big secret (it’s not really much of a secret, so don’t @ me for outing any spoilers)。 A big thank you to netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book。 An honest review was requested but not required。 I fondly recall reading the original wallflowers series, and to this day it is one of the few series that’s earned a place, in full, on my crowded bookshelf。 Sebastian and Evie are one of my favorite historical romance couples ever。 To be completely honest my heart wasn’t broken by the big secret (it’s not really much of a secret, so don’t @ me for outing any spoilers)。 I find it entirely believable that a crappy 1800s condom wouldn’t work, and we all know Sebastian was a huge rake pre-Evie。 Stuff happens。 So no, I wasn’t heartbroken about Sebastian’s big secret。What really bothered me about the book, frankly, was the fact that Merritt and Keir took a definite backseat in their own story。 Most of the other characters stole the scene from them: Garrett and Ethan, Marcus and Lillian, and most of all Sebastian and Evie。 Even Phoebe and baby Eden made an impression。 I thought Merritt and Keir needed more page time besides just being sick and having sex。 They were really cute together in the few opportunities they had to just converse and spend time together。 Ms。 Kleypas has a knack for constructing memorable, relatable characters and this story was no exception。 I would have just liked the two main characters to get a little more time to shine。 Nonetheless, I look forward to more stories from Ms。 Kleypas - hopefully Seraphina’s! 。。。more

I was so here for it。It's impossible not to love Merritt from page one。 She's a widow who now runs her late husband's shipping business and does so well。 She's strong willed, smart, and has a heart of gold。 It's hard not to love that about her。 Keir MacRae is a rough around the edges whisky distiller who feels he's not good enough to be the dirt beneath lady Merritt's feet。 What I loved about this story was Merritt。 This is a woman who knows what she wants and even though she has a skittish Scott who's determined to fight the attraction between them, she doesn't shy away from going after it。 I loved this。 But just when you think this is all there is to a book, an attempted murder and some amnesia get thrown into the mix and suddenly you have the plot twists to beat all plot twists。 Someone wants Keir dead, my beloved Sebastian makes a lengthy cameo, and I can't put the book down。The first 30% of this book was a bit slow, but then it took a twist and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough。 There's a mystery, a stunning love story, and an epic revelation that I simply inhaled。 I don't think I'll ever get tired of this world or the spin offs。 If you loved Lisa's Wallflowers series than you'll definitely appreciate the cameos here。 And if you loved Devil In Winter, you definitely don't want to miss this one。It was a dreamy romance with steam and heart and I can't recommend it enough。ARC courtesy of publisher in exchange for an honest reviewFind me on: 。。。more

Lisa Kleypas, does it again! Which is just the way I like it。 There’s also the slight problem that someone wants Keir dead。 When an attempt on Keir’s life gives him amnesia, St。 Vincent involves himself of course, and it’s not hard to guess at the why of his involvement。 There’s humor, raw moments, nostalgia and guilt as well as forgiveness。 Sigh, I love romance。 Netflix, how about you adapt this series? I giggled, I laughed, I screamed, I awww’ed, and I might have shed a tear。 I patiently wait on Seraphina, Raphael and Ivo’s story。 :) 。。。more

Devil in Disguise is like a cup of coffee。 The aroma drew you in for the first burning sip。 You feel the heat warm you up and wake your senses, as you sit back and enjoy the rest of your brew。 Then slowly as you finish, you feel the caffeine hitting your blood stream。。。。。 Just the right combination of warm invigorating satisfaction。。。 before running to the loo for relief。I loved Merritt and Keir。 It’s hard to review this book without revealing spoilers。。。。 the very good and the wtf。One thing I l Devil in Disguise is like a cup of coffee。 The aroma drew you in for the first burning sip。 You feel the heat warm you up and wake your senses, as you sit back and enjoy the rest of your brew。 Then slowly as you finish, you feel the caffeine hitting your blood stream。。。。。 Just the right combination of warm invigorating satisfaction。。。 before running to the loo for relief。I loved Merritt and Keir。 It’s hard to review this book without revealing spoilers。。。。 the very good and the wtf。One thing I love about Kleypas books are the small moments and intimacies that characters experience, either solo or with another character。。。。 a walk, a look, a touch, a quiet conversation, a subtle experience。。。。 They all add an extra touch to the story that makes my insides happy。 Such as when Keir gets a haircut。。。。。 or when Merritt sees him at her door。。。。 Is this the last Ravenel book??? Is Lisa Kleypas going to continue dabbing into the lives of the Wallflowers? Im a glutton for middle aged Marcus and Sebastian。。。。 But what about the Hunts? Or Cravens? Hathaways??? 。。。more

This book! I loved it so much, it was just everything I wanted and more。 I do think you will love this book even more if you have the character knowledge from LK’s previous series the Wallflowers and the Ravenels, as this book definitely builds and adds to those。 🥰Merritt Sterling has been successfully running her late husband’s shipping business in London。 The oldest of 6 siblings (her parents are Marcus & Lillian from It Happened One Autumn), Merritt has always been the caretaker, so when Mr。 This book! I loved it so much, it was just everything I wanted and more。 I do think you will love this book even more if you have the character knowledge from LK’s previous series the Wallflowers and the Ravenels, as this book definitely builds and adds to those。 🥰Merritt Sterling has been successfully running her late husband’s shipping business in London。 The oldest of 6 siblings (her parents are Marcus & Lillian from It Happened One Autumn), Merritt has always been the caretaker, so when Mr。 Keir MacRae arrives one evening in need of assistance, Merritt drops everything to help him。 Keir owns and runs a whisky distillery on an island off the coast of Scotland and is in London for business。 But after this week, neither of their lives will ever be the same…I loved this book so hard。 I loved how Keir was gone for Merritt from the start and while their partnership came together fast, it was so romantic and beautiful and I believed how meant to be they were。 And so much happens in this book, so I get why they get together quickly。 Merritt is a fabulously strong-willed heroine who knows how to shoot a gun and loves her family fiercely。 I loved her relationship with her brother Luke who was working the shipping business with her。 I am always a sucker for seeing LK characters/places again, so I adored that we got scenes with Ravenels characters: Dr。 Garrett Gibson & Ethan Ransom (Hello Stranger) and Phoebe (Devil’s Daughter) and had scenes at Jenner’s。 And then of course seeing my OG Wallflower loves: Sebastian St。 Vincent (aka Duke of Kingston now), Evie, Marcus (aka Lord Westcliff) and Lillian。 There were also fun historical tidbits in here as well, like the Victorian mustache cup (which I definitely had to google a photo of after 😆), the history of the hypodermic syringe, and why the keyboard is set up a certain way thanks to typewriters。 This was just a wonderful read that gave me all the feels, I adored the epilogue, and there is just something special about reading a brand new book from your favorite author。 🥰 。。。more
