Summary

Teddy Crutcher has won Teacher of the Year at the esteemed Belmont Academy, home to the best and brightest。

He says his wife couldn't be more proud—though no one has seen her in a while。

Teddy really can’t be bothered with the death of a school parent that’s looking more and more like murder or the student digging a little too deep into Teddy’s personal life。 His main focus is on pushing these kids to their full academic potential。

All he wants is for his colleagues—and the endlessly meddlesome parents—to stay out of his way。

It's really too bad that sometimes excellence can come at such a high cost。

USA Today bestselling author Samantha Downing is back with her latest sneaky thriller set at a prestigious private school—complete with interfering parents, overeager students, and one teacher who just wants to teach them all a lesson…

I’ve got to say, I was really disappointed with this one。 After absolutely loving her last two books, this one fell really flat for me。 I’m normally a sucker for books set around prestigious schools and all the rich people drama that comes with it but this book didn’t excite me as much as her previous two。 There wasn’t the same mind-blowing plot twists that I’m used to with her writing and it all felt really dull to me。 This book doesn’t change her from being one of my favorite thriller authors I’ve got to say, I was really disappointed with this one。 After absolutely loving her last two books, this one fell really flat for me。 I’m normally a sucker for books set around prestigious schools and all the rich people drama that comes with it but this book didn’t excite me as much as her previous two。 There wasn’t the same mind-blowing plot twists that I’m used to with her writing and it all felt really dull to me。 This book doesn’t change her from being one of my favorite thriller authors but I really felt let down after reading this。 。。。more

It is chock full of surprises and is a breeze to read。*Thank you, NetGalley, for a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinion。 。。。more

I love the way @smariedowning writes。 This is a quick read with fantastic characters。 While you know who the killer is early on, there are still lots of twists。 Can’t wait to watch the HBO series!

Rounded up from 3。75 Thank you @berkleypub and @netgalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review。 This was my first Downing and I can see why she is a well loved author。 I read somewhere that she said she couldn’t wait for us to meet the characters in this one, especially Teddy, and oof, she can certainly write a character。 Much like Stephen King, her writing forces you to get to know the innermost parts of a character and easily humanizes them。 But at the same time, I asked myself, is it p Rounded up from 3。75 Thank you @berkleypub and @netgalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review。 This was my first Downing and I can see why she is a well loved author。 I read somewhere that she said she couldn’t wait for us to meet the characters in this one, especially Teddy, and oof, she can certainly write a character。 Much like Stephen King, her writing forces you to get to know the innermost parts of a character and easily humanizes them。 But at the same time, I asked myself, is it possible to hate every character?A very cozy summer thriller, set at a private school in the north east, it follows Teddy (teacher of the year), Zach (straight A student) and a few other characters as the story goes on。 It has a very comical tone even though it deals with。。 ya know, murder。The story starts off with a bang and slowly unravels A LOT。 I love how the author took tiny tid bits from different parts of the story and reveals later how they got to be there。 It added to the light tone of this one。 Downing’s characters in this one are so。。 unlikeable but I also kind of liked being in their heads? She does a great job at showing you everyone has agenda and no one is who they seem。 The surprises and connections just kept coming! TLDR: recommend but can’t wait to read her back log (which I think are more loved)。 。。。more

FOR YOUR OWN GOOD doesn't quite nail it for me like Downing's two previous books did。 We still get the deviously, brilliant mind of the author with addictive short chapters and a storyline that moves at a quick pace。。。 however, I think the ending didn't quite satisfy me like the others had and it almost got a bit too campy in its feel for my mood at this particular time。There's no mistaking that Downing is one of my favorite thriller authors and if you haven't read her yet, I highly encourage you to pick up any of her books。 Maybe this wasn't my favorite of the three I've read so far, but I still had such fun with all these characters in all their sociopathic glory。3。5 rounding up for goodreads 。。。more

For Your Own Good is a WILD ride。 I enjoy dark academia so I knew I’d like the setting of Belmont。 ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣I thought the author chose a really unique approach with this book。 There were a few twists, but not many surprises, because you knew what the bad guys were doing throughout the book。 Everyone got roped into the drama by the end of the book so there wasn’t a good guy in sight。 I personally hated every single character so it was a little unusual to not have someone to root for in the story。 ⁣⁣ For Your Own Good is a WILD ride。 I enjoy dark academia so I knew I’d like the setting of Belmont。 ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣I thought the author chose a really unique approach with this book。 There were a few twists, but not many surprises, because you knew what the bad guys were doing throughout the book。 Everyone got roped into the drama by the end of the book so there wasn’t a good guy in sight。 I personally hated every single character so it was a little unusual to not have someone to root for in the story。 ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣Without a spoiler, I think some of the elements in the plot were very creative but also unbelievable。 I can definitely say I won’t be forgetting this one anytime soon! Who will go to jail, who will go free, and who will go dead? Readers will find out, all in good time。The bottom line? Don't miss this one。 I cannot thank the publisher, via NetGalley, enough for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy。 Cue my thunderous applause! 。。。more

For Your Own Good follows teacher Teddy Crutcher as he becomes fed up with the students, parents and his fellow teachers at the ritzy boarding school at which he teaches and slowly starts to get his revenge。 I think this book will be very popular - it's got a One of Us is Lying meets Riverdale thing happening and teens who like thrillers will find plenty to like here。 There are multiple POVs, and while it's not a mystery per se, it definitely has many similar trappings to that of a murder myster For Your Own Good follows teacher Teddy Crutcher as he becomes fed up with the students, parents and his fellow teachers at the ritzy boarding school at which he teaches and slowly starts to get his revenge。 I think this book will be very popular - it's got a One of Us is Lying meets Riverdale thing happening and teens who like thrillers will find plenty to like here。 There are multiple POVs, and while it's not a mystery per se, it definitely has many similar trappings to that of a murder mystery。 As the reader, you know who the killer is the whole time, so while suspenseful, it's more suspenseful in terms of the fallout。 It's not my genre necessarily - I usually race through thrillers but only sort of end up enjoying them which was very much the case here。 I just need to like characters, and I can't say I liked any of these characters。 They were all terrible with one exception that is sort of undone at the end。 That seems to be part and parcel for the genre, and it is 100% of the time the thing that annoys me the most about this genre, so if it doesn't bother you, I think you'd like this book。 The other thing I couldn't get over was that this book required a huge suspensions of disbelief in terms of the incapability of the FBI and basically everything to do with the poisoning methods。 There's a plot line with poisoning via k-cup that I'm pretty sure wouldn't work, and I just kind of generally got the impression that very little poisoning research was done。 The killer makes like the BAREST effort to cover his tracks and somehow no one in law enforcement ever finds him to be suspicious。 Anyway, I spent a lot more time thinking about poisoning methods and the fact that none of the "evidence" that the FBI/local police had would hold up in an actual court than the book itself, which tells you what you need to know。TLDR: If you like Riverdale or thrillers with the word "Girl" in the title, you're going to like this too。 It's simply not my thing。 2 stars - it was ok。Thanks to Netgalley and the Berkley Publishing Group for the eARC which I received in exchange for an unbiased review。 For Your Own Good is out on 20 July, but you can put your copy on hold today! 。。。more
